Battir (Arabic: بتير) is a Palestinian village in the West Bank, 6.4 km west of Bethlehem, and southwest of Jerusalem.
Ancient Betar, whose name Battir preserves, was a second century Jewish village and fortress, the site of the final battle of the Bar Kokhba revolt. It was inhabited during the Byzantine and Islamic periods, and in the Ottoman and British Mandate censuses its population was recorded as primarily Muslim. Battir is situated just above the route of the Jaffa–Jerusalem railway, which served as the armistice line between Israel and Jordan from 1949 until the Six-Day War, when it was captured by Israel. In former times, the city lay along the route from Jerusalem to Bet Gubrin. In 2007, Battir had a population of about 4,000 and was under the control of the Palestinian National Authority.
Battir has been identified as the site of ancient Betar (also called Beiter). The modern Palestinian village is built around the ancient site Khirbet el-Yahud (Arabic, meaning "ruin of the Jews" ) and "is unanimously identified with Betar, the last stronghold of the Second Revolt against the Romans, where its leader, Bar-Kokhba, found his death in 135 CE." "A modern agricultural terrace follows the line of the ancient fortification wall". There is a tradition that the village is also the site of the tomb of the Tannaic sage Eleazar of Modi'im.
Palestine usually refers to:
Palestine may also refer to:
The West Bank (Arabic: الضفة الغربية aḍ-Ḍiffah l-Ġarbiyyah; Hebrew: הגדה המערבית, HaGadah HaMa'aravit) or Cisjordan is a landlocked territory near the Mediterranean coast of Western Asia, forming the bulk of the Palestinian territories and the State of Palestine. The West Bank shares boundaries (demarcated by the Jordanian-Israeli armistice of 1949) to the west, north, and south with the state of Israel, and to the east, across the Jordan River, with Jordan. The West Bank also contains a significant section of the western Dead Sea shore.
The West Bank, including East Jerusalem, has a land area of 5,640 km2 plus a water area of 220 km2, consisting of the northwest quarter of the Dead Sea. It has an estimated population of 2,676,740 (July 2013). More than 80%, about 2,800,000, are Palestinian Arabs, and approximately 500,000 are Jewish Israelis living in the West Bank, including about 192,000 in East Jerusalem, in Israeli settlements, built on the 43% of the West Bank which Israel has allocated to local settler councils. The international community considers Israeli settlements in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this. The International Court of Justice advisory ruling (2004) concluded that events that came after the 1967 occupation of the West Bank by Israel, including the Jerusalem Law, Israel's peace treaty with Jordan and the Oslo Accords, did not change the status of the West Bank (including East Jerusalem) as occupied territory with Israel as the occupying power.

This is a short clip of work-in-progress from Battir, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Palestine. An ancient system of springs, reservoirs, canals and terraces is still in use in this wonderful valley. We are currently working on a short documentary film called "Hydroheritage Palestine" in which we tell the story of Battir and document traditional knowledge about the ancient system.
A West Bank village is hoping to become a leading tourist site after it was granted World Heritage status. The UNESCO honour has also saved Battir from Israeli plans to build a wall through the land. The sound of morning prayer resonates across the valley and sunshine bathes Battir's terraces. It's the cauliflower season and a farmer is tending to his crops. Until recently, this land - just south of Jerusalem - was under threat from a proposed extension to the separation barrier, which divides Israel and the West Bank. But the ancient Roman irrigation system that has watered these farms for centuries has stopped that from happening. It was the centrepiece of a campaign, which granted Battir UNESCO World Heritage status in 2014. And the Israeli Supreme Court has frozen the extensi...
LEADIN Campaigners are hoping that the elevation of the West Bank village of Battir to a UNESCO World Heritage Site will help stop the Israeli's building a separation barrier there. They fear the area's ancient terraces and natural landscape will be damaged forever if the barrier goes ahead. STORYLINE The land of olives and vines. With it's ancient walls and fresh springs, it's not hard to see why the village of Battir, found south of Jerusalem, is the newest addition to the World Heritage Site list. The landscape here, along with a series of farmed valleys made up of stone terraces, has remained unchanged for thousands of years. Now Battir is on the World Heritage List and on the List of World Heritage in Danger. Campaigners to save the valley are celebrating, among them Akram B...

Ephesians 5:20
Words by Bob Hartman and Dino Elefante
Music by John Elefante
I have a thankful heart that you have given me
And it can only come from you
There is no way to begin to tell you how I feel
There are no words to express how you've become so real
Jesus, you've given me so much I can't repay
I have no offering
There is no way to begin to tell you how I feel
There's nothing more I can say and no way to repay
Your warming touch that melts my heart of stone
Your steadfast love - I'll never be alone
I have a thankful heart that you have given me
And it can only come from you
I have a thankful heart; words don't come easily
But I am sure you can see my thankful heart
Help me be a man of God
A man who's after Your own heart
Help me show my gratitude
