Tough and explosive, Judo is a full-contact combat sport that is incredibly popular in Azerbaijan. It originally emerged from jujitsu as a martial art and was further developed as a competitive sport by Jigaro Kano, a Japanese educationalist, sport activist, and philosopher. Combatants – known as judokas – aim to either throw an opponent to the floor, subdue them with a pin, or force the opponent to submit with a choke or a joint lock. The competition will take place from 25–28 June 2015. More than 350 judokas will compete over four days of individual and team bouts in men’s and women’s competition at Heydar Aliyev Arena. For the first time at a major multi-sport continental, Blind Judo will also be contested with medals in the men’s over 90kg category and in the women’s under 57kg category. That means a total of 18 medals will be on offer at the Baku 2015 European Games.
