In which John Green teaches you about what westerners call the middle ages and the lives of the aristocracy...in Japan. The Heian period in Japan lasted from 794CE to 1185CE, and it was an interesting time in Japan. Rather than being known for a thriving economy, or particularly interesting politics, the most important things to come out of the Heian period were largely cultural. There was a flourishing of art and literature in the period, and a lot of that culture was created by women. The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu was the classic piece of literature of the day, and it gave a detailed look into the way the Aristocrats of the Heian period lived. While this doesn't give a lot of insight into the lives of daily people, it can be very valuable, and the idea of approaching history from a cultural perspective is a refreshing change from the usual military or political history that survives from so many eras.

Description:
Some of the most incredible and innovative inventions have come from Japan. From technology, to everyday items that are pure genius, the Japanese are indeed some of the most innovative and brilliant people out there. Their inventions and even their anime is cunning and leaves Americans fascinated, wanting to study the culture and be a part of a Japanese world, maybe even more so than Japan’s natives. But no one is innovative or perfect 24/7, and there are moments where an invention or new product will come out that will make you wonder and question whether it’s sensible or not. Here are the ten most bizarre Japanese inventions that leave the rest of the world constantly scratching their heads wondering what exactly was going on when the big bosses approved it.
The first bizarre invention is the Motoman SDA10, which is an autobot created to make Japanese pancakes by itself. From the first step to plate presentation, the Motoman can cook a customer’s pancake along with working side by side with human coworkers. The next bizarre invention actually got its start in Europe, but the Japanese perfected it with technology and comfort, is capsule hotels. They are only big enough to fit a sleeping human body measure at about 6 feet by 3 feet. Staying in a capsule hotel is extraordinarily cheap and provides a cost-effective option for the budget traveler in Japan.
The next bizarre invention is the butter former, which is basically like a cheese grater, but for butter. You can use cold or room temperature, and with just a twist, you will get grated butter that’s easier to spread across your toast. In case, there will be no more tearing of your bread while buttering it. If you’ve eaten too much butter and need to slim your face, Japan has invented a plethora of face slimmers and smoothers (to get rid of wrinkles). These mouth pieces look really awkward, and you only have to wear them for a few minutes a day.
The next bizarre invention was created in order to help women hide from predators and attackers. The vending machine dress was made to look just like a vending machine, but it’s just some fabric with the image of some food products in a glass case. Let us hope the attacker doesn’t try to buy a beverage while on the prowl.
If you’ve ever had a cup of noodles, you know that after putting in the hot water, you have to let the product sit so the noodles can cook, but often times the paper lid comes off. The Japanese invented a solution for this dilemma by inventing Cupman, which is a plastic little man that holds the lid down. If while you’re eating your noodles, you feel lonely and want the comfort of a woman, then pick up a Female Lap Pillow, which is exactly what the name describes. These pillows are sold in stores and you can go home with one anytime you’d like.
If these inventions are bizarre to you, then check out the rest of these bizarre inventions like the thumb extender, square watermelons (which you can’t eat), and the Necomimi (for the times you want to wear computerized animal ears that will express your feelings).

Description:
Among the many, multi-faceted challenges tied to launching a product or service with global ambitions is settling on a name that speaks to what is a broad, widespread and multi-lingual demographic. It can be difficult to settle on phrasing that is able to convert a chosen message across a broad spectrum of cultural and language barriers without something getting lost or redefined along the way. Just ask Apple Inc., which learned the hard way that SIRI, iPhone’s personal assistant software, translates to mean a rather vulgar word for penis in the Georgian language.
So it’s hard to blame these foreign companies for losing something in translation upon releasing products with names that are, admittedly, pretty amusing to English-speaking consumers. That is, in the event that these actually are mistakes. While some of the items listed here are clearly innocent translation errors, some do seem to be deliberate, tongue-in-cheek attempts to be provocative and to draw a few more eyeballs with some curiously worded packaging. Indeed, in an era where any online blog can generate millions of views from across the world, a silly product from Ghana can become a worldwide phenomenon immediately.
While these translation faux pas can be highly amusing for consumers and other on-lookers, they can represent awfully expensive mistakes for the corporations unfortunate enough to make them. Sometimes, a company will lose money on a dud of an ad campaign over a cultural mis-step, as was the case when Pampers flopped in Japan after including a stork delivering babies on its packaging and thereby confusing Japanese customers who weren’t familiar with that culture-specific folklore. Other times, a poorly researched marketing campaign launch can wind up retracted at a significant expense over a translation snafu, such as when HSBC Bank’s “Assume Nothing” tagline translated to “Do Nothing” in many countries, prompting a $10 million brand overhaul overseas.
We in North America are hardly perfect when it comes to branding messages that don’t quite hit the target overseas. On top of the iPhone and HSBC Bank fiascoes, KFC initially ran into trouble in China when it’s “Finger-lickin’ good” tagline translated to the less appealing “Eat your fingers off”. Surely other countries could build their own lists of product launches stemming from the US that went comically awry when they crossed the ocean. For the purposes of this list, however, we focused in on products that, whether knowingly or unknowingly, carry a certain – and undeniably entertaining - charge when translated to English.
Whether these are unintentionally hilarious miscues or deliberate, devilish winks from marketers who know they will draw some added attention, it’s hard to believe that any of these raunchily-titled products will have English-speaking consumers flocking to the grocery store or the web to buy them. Unless, of course, sucking down a “Vergina beer” is your sort of thing. But hey, they will certainly get you aware and talking. And isn’t that just the point of brand marketing?

After the Canadian Supreme Court struck down laws around sex work as being harmful to people in the trade, the federal government passed Bill C-36, which criminalizes johns who patronize sex workers. The government argues these laws are intended to protect women from human traffickers, but critics say they make the trade more dangerous for those consensually doing sex work. It's now illegal for sex workers to advertise their services, and because johns are committing a crime, they may pressure workers to rush into encounters without vetting potential clients.
We sent Lowell, a pop singer and former stripper, to meet with policy makers and law enforcement officials to discuss C-36. Lowell also went down to Nevada to see how a regulated, legal sex industry functions. Finally, she met with a john to see how he feels about his behavior becoming newly illegal.

wn.com/The New Era Of Canadian Sex Work
After the Canadian Supreme Court struck down laws around sex work as being harmful to people in the trade, the federal government passed Bill C-36, which criminalizes johns who patronize sex workers.
