In San Francisco, the successful self-made businessman Walter Williams has just bought three factories in Denver with the approval of the board of directors. His beloved wife Irene tells him that she is not feeling well to travel with him, and asks Walter to give a lift to her cousin Jim Torrance. On the highway, Jim, who is actually Irene's lover, tries to kill Walter hitting his head and throwing him in a cliff, and has a fatal accident while escaping driving Walters's car. Walter is considered dead and later his wife is sent to jail accused of plotting his murder. Meanwhile, the wounded Walter sleeps in a moving van and awakes in Larkspur, a small town in Idaho. He is hired as a mechanic in a gas station by the owner, Marsha Peters. For three months, Walter reads the news, expecting revenge with Irene sentenced to death, and he and Marsha fall in love for each other. When Walter discloses the truth to Marsha, she convinces him to return to San Francisco and save his unfaithful wife.

Classically, Film Noir is a category of films produced in the 1940s and 50s, in response to the inner darkness that ran through America post-Great Depression. But a lot of films produced after that era seem to fit the “noir” classification, which calls the classification itself into question.
Perhaps the least likely member of the post-Noir Noirs is 1998’s The Big Lebowski, about an man who gets swept up in circumstances beyond his control after he goes to solve the mystery… of his ruined rug.
We’ll take a look at The Big Lebowski and it’s Film Noir predecessors, explore a genre, question whether Film Noir really is a genre… Hey, it’s all in a day’s study here at Film School’D.

Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. Hollywood's classic film noir period is generally regarded as extending from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Film noir of this era is associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography. Many of the prototypical stories and much of the attitude of classic noir derive from the hardboiled school of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Depression.
The term film noir, French for "black film", first applied to Hollywood films by French critic Nino Frank in 1946, was unknown to most American film industry professionals of the classic era. Cinema historians and critics defined the noir canon in retrospect. Before the notion was widely adopted in the 1970s, many of the classic film noirs were referred to as melodramas. The question of whether film noir qualifies as a distinct genre is a matter of ongoing debate among scholars.

On the highway, Jim, who is actually Irene's lover, tries to kill Walter hitting his head and throwing him in a cliff, and has a fatal accident while escaping driving Walters's car. Walter is considered dead and later his wife is sent to jail accused of plotting his murder. Meanwhile, the wounded Walter sleeps in a moving van and awakes in Larkspur, a small town in Idaho. He is hired as a mechanic in a gas station by the owner, Marsha Peters. For three months, Walter reads the news, expecting revenge with Irene sentenced to death, and he and Marsha fall in love for each other. When Walter discloses the truth to Marsha, she convinces him to return to San Francisco and save his unfaithful wife.

The mystery. The femme fatale. The events spinning out of our hero's control. All essential ingredients in a Film Noir, and all are present in the Coen Brothers’ seminal stoner comedy, the Big Lebowski. Does that make Lebowski a Film Noir? What is Noir, anyway? Subscribe: http://goo.gl/9AGRm
Classically, Film Noir is a category of films produced in the 1940s and 50s, in response to the inner darkness that ran through America post-Great Depression. But a lot of films produced after that era seem to fit the “noir” classification, which calls the classification itself into question.
Perhaps the least likely member of the post-Noir Noirs is 1998’s The Big Lebowski, about an man who gets swept up in circumstances beyond his control after he goes to solve the mystery… of his ruined rug.
We’ll take a look at The Big Lebowski and it’s Film Noir predecessors, explore a genre, question whether Film Noir really is a genre… Hey, it’s all in a day’s study here at Film School’D.

French police report shootout and explosion in Paris

PARIS (AP) -- Police officials in France say there has been an explosion in a bar near a Paris stadium and a shootout in a Paris restaurant. BFM television says there were several dead in the restaurant shooting in the 10th arrondissement of the capital. Last April, CEO and founder of Gravity Payments, Dan Price, stunned his 120 employees, and the rest of the nation, when he announced a new policy that would raise the minimum wage at his credit card processing firm to $70,000 a year. He immediately received a cacophony of praise and skepticism, and an influx of job applications. about 3,500 within one week of the announcement ... reports. Director Andre de Toth helmed a lot of interesting films in various genres, including the 3-D “House of Wax,” several westerns, and film noir such as this movie ... Mann's film, "The Leisure Class", is peppered throughout HBO's November schedule (next showing on the 18th), and capped the series finale of the documentary - punctuation that felt more like an ellipsis than an exclamation mark ... He had to beat out some stiff competition, notably (in this examiner's view), a writer, Taylor Engel, whose short film, "The Pavement", reminded one of an almost Hitchcockian take on film noir....
