We Laced NYC's Homeless With Fresh Sneakers With 'It's From the Sole'
It's From the Sole is a non-profit aimed at helping the less-fortunate one "step" at a time. The organization takes new or lightly-used sneakers, cleans them up, and gives them to those who need it most: the homeless. We linked up with Andre McDonnell, the man behind it all, to see how he tackles the problem that he wants to fix.

This week, Supreme and Jordan brand dropped apparel from the collaboration that took hypebeasts by storm. Unfortunately, the sneakers weren't available in store in New York but the hoodie, sweatpants, T-shirts, coaches jacket, and hats were up for grabs. As always, people waited for hours in line for the goods, which ranged from $44 to $598.
By now, you probably know that we like to troll the line—it's just way too easy. This time, we quizzed them with some basic MJ trivia, asking them questions that they really should know the answers to. To see what they had to say and what they picked up.

Justin Bieber is a hot name right now, releasing hit new singles, smashing Spotify records, and now, appearing on his second cover with Complex magazine.
In Bieber’s return to our cover, we pushed the envelope with our visuals to mirror what’s been going on in Justin’s real life.
The concept for the cover shoot involves Bieber as an escape artist, reminiscent of Houdini. He’s chained up and underwater, struggling to free himself.. sort of like how he’s had to persevere in his own personal and professional life after going through a bit of a rough patch.
Bieber was shot by photographer David Black and he wasn't without concerns about the potentially dangerous scenario.
Interview clip (“didn’t want water to be cold”)
I was on set during the shoot, and I gotta say… dude can hold his breath for a long time. Unusual talent, right? Well, he had an equally unusual explanation. Interview clip (holding breath in hot tub “I’m a weird dude”)
At the end of the day, Justin is standing by his claims that he’s working to turn his life around from some of the poor decisions he made over the past few years. He said, Interview clip (turning life around)
Check out the newest issue of Complex Magazine for the full interview with Bieber. There’s some interesting stuff in there.

Demi Lovato slays all life in Complex magazine’s October/November issue and holy crap as if we didn’t love her enough already, this interview further confirms why Demi is a real one.
In the interview Demi opens up about having friends who don’t have their lips glued to her ass, details about her new album, her relationship with Selena, Wilmer, and more.
Demi looks frickin’ amazing as per usu - slaying that 50s pin up look – These retro pics were shot by photographer Tony Kelly and confident definitely seems to be the theme for Demi lately.
Our girl sat down with Complex’s managing editor, and revealed some real talk. When asked if she talks to Selena Gomez anymore, Demi straight up said “nope” and when asked if there fizzled out relationship had anything to do with Justin Bieber, Demi said – “Not really. Not anymore.”
But one friendship that she wasn’t shutting down was hers with Iggy Azalea saying - “She’s the furthest thing from fake. In this entertainment business, that’s so hard to find with anybody. That’s why I don’t have any very famous friends. The very few that I do have are real.” Demi went on to say – “I’m not the type of person that’s on Instagram posting pictures of me and tons of my best friends. I have my core group, and they’re the type of people that will be there for me in the middle of the night. They’re the type of people that are like, “You’re being a bitch right now. Don’t talk to me that way,” and I’m like, “Whoa. Sorry. I didn’t realize it.” I don’t have anybody around me who kisses my ass.
She went on to say that because she and Iggy have both gone through so much that its nice that quote - on a Friday night we can make gingerbread houses together instead of going out and drinking our sorrows away—that’s f**king cool.
And you know Complex had Demi dish about Wilmer and as for her very likely future in laws, Demi said that Wilmer’s dad is already like “make babies,” but Demi assured him there won’t be any little Demis and Wilmers running around anytime soon.
As for her body inspiration Demi said - “I’ve always said the Kardashians. When they came into the spotlight, they kind of revolutionized what beauty was when it came to body shapes. From then, I noticed that Beyoncé was thicker, and Nicki Minaj is thicker. Watching them really helped me learn to accept my body image, too.”
As for her future, Demi has her dreams set on the Grammys. She told Complex that she really doesn’t need to win a Grammy but Justin being nominated would make her extremely happy saying “ You can’t go higher than the Grammys in the music industry. That was a huge goal for this album. I watched the Grammy nominations last year and I was like, “I want to be there so bad.”
And there’s no doubt in my mind that Demi will see that dream turn into reality in the near future. There are many more juicy nugs in Demi’s full interview on Complex.com. This week, Supreme re-opened its doors at its SoHo store for the first drop of the Fall/Winter 2015 collection. And, as always, the line was insane, going all the way from Lafayette Street to Crosby Street. Since summer isn't quite over just yet, the New York skate brand held off on releasing some of the heavier pieces from the collection, instead, dropping items such as graphic tees, jerseys, polos and light jackets. In addition to the clothes, some fun accessories were also thrown into the mix, like a crow bar, stress balls, and a zippo lighter.
We went down to SoHo to troll the hilarious hypebeasts in line, who, we learned, will say just about anything. We asked them how long they had been waiting, where they get the money to buy Supreme, and what it is about the brand that makes them want to spend hours and hours in line. Check out the video above for their candid answers.

The organization takes new or lightly-used sneakers, cleans them up, and gives them to those who need it most: the homeless. With the help of Gwarizm, Highsnobiety just unearthed an old interview from 2002 with James Jebbia conducted by long-gone streetwear blog Rift Trooper.
In the interview, Jebbia touches on his love for boxing, Supreme's short-lived original sneakers, and his feelings on the resale market. In 2002, the online reseller market was only its infancy, but Jebbia still had an opinion, saying, "I don't like it very much simply because we try our best to make our clothing affordable for young people, after all Supreme is a skate brand and when I do see our things on eBay the prices are normally at least double what they should be. I much prefer if someone buys something from us that they plan on wearing it and not selling."
Jebbia also briefly discussed the original sneaker silhouettes Supreme released in the 2000s. Back then, the brand put out the Down Low and Mid Town, which closely resembled the Air Force 1 Low and Mid. Jebbia said the designs came about "just through us trying to come up with a simple sneaker that represents our look."

After Jada Pinkett Smith mulled over boycotting the Oscars because no actors of color were nominated for the second year in a row, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’s original Aunt Viv Janet Hubert called her comments "suspect." Now, Pinkett-Smith is answering back and her response is a lot calmer than one would expect.
In an exclusive video obtained by ET, the actress spoke with a message of unity rather than vitriol. "Considering that Alabama had its highest recruitment for the KKK for Martin Luther King's birthday, I hope that we as African-Americans can find a way to get along and step together," she said. The New York Daily News reports that a Mobile, Alabama chapter of the Ku Klux Klan handed out recruitment flyers to residents during the holiday weekend.
Pinkett-Smith then went on to address the Oscars controversy directly, refusing to make incendiary comments toward her husband's former co-star. "This whole Oscar controversy isn't really about the Oscars. Really, in my plea to ask all communities and people of color to take back our power is so that we can use it in all sectors of our community, and right now, specifically with African-American people, we have some very serious issues that I think we as a people have to move together on. I'm hoping we can find ways to step together in this instead of finding ways to fight each other. I got love for everybody."

Bria Kam and Chrissy Chambers, the YouTube heroes behind the inimitable cinematic achievement Lesbians Touch Penis for the First Time, are back with that gem's inevitable genitalia-centered sequel: Gay Men Touch Vagina for the First Time. "Making this video has been something we have wanted to do for a while," the pair, known in YouTube circles as BriaAndChrissy, tell the Huffington Post. "We wanted to bring awareness to how little we as a people know about our own bodies."
The premise, of course, is quite simple. In the name of body knowledge improvement, a group of gay men individually make physical contact with a vagina. "The video shows how much stock we do put in genitalia as a culture in relation to gender," the self-described "singing duo/lesbian couple" says. "We're glad that issue is raised. We should have an understanding, safe, and open dialogue about our own bodies and it is through videos like this that those discussions can take place."
Thankfully, BriaAndChrissy's attempt to start a global conversation about genitalia's place in a modern society is definitely working. Of course, these clips' growing popularity is certainly aided by top-shelf reaction shots like this.

Yo Gotti is in the hottest stretch of his career, thanks to the massive success of his hit single, "Down in the DM." The song currently sits in the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 1 on Urban Radio, which are the highest chart placements of his career to date. Over the years, Gotti has released plenty of music, and had high levels of success, but nothing like the wave that has come from his latest single. But, according to Gotti, he had no idea the song was going to blow up like it did. "Me personally, I just make music, and when I go into the studio, I don't really go in with a mindset of where a record is going to land on the chart," he told Complex over the phone. "It's strictly about making the best music that I can make."

In a new wide-ranging interview with GQ's Chris Heath, R. Kelly talked about the numerous sexual assault allegations against him throughout his career. In the disturbing account of R. Kelly's past, the singer also discussed his 2008 child pornography trial, his marriage to Aaliyah, and more. The past accusations against Kelly has been a touchy subject for years, and Kelly rarely discusses anything about it in interviews. Last month, Kelly stormed out of an interview with Huffpost Live after he was pressed about the past allegations of sexual assault.

If you had won Powerball last week, you'd only be able to buy half of the Knicks.
Proving once again it's great to be a filthy rich sports owner, Forbes released its valuations for NBA teams and named the Knicks as the most valuable, worth a whopping $3 billion and "up 20 percent and fourth most among U.S. sports franchises behind only the Dallas Cowboys ($4 billion), New England Patriots ($3.2 billion) and New York Yankees ($3.2 billion)."
Despite their recent malaise, the Lakers slotted in second with a $2.7 billion valuation followed by the Bulls ($2.3 billion), Celtics ($2.1 billion), and Clippers ($2 billion). In all, Forbes says "13 teams are worth at least $1 billion, up from just three two years ago."
The five franchises rounding out the bottom were Charlotte ($750 million), Minnesota ($720 million), Philadelphia ($700 million), Milwaukee ($675 million), and New Orleans ($650 million).
Forbes outlines how the NBA and its 30 franchise have been flooded with money in recent years, driving up valuations thanks to a new television contract with ESPN, Nike's deal to be the league's official apparel maker starting in 2017, new multi-million dollar corporate partnerships, and regional sports network deals that are handsomely paying teams like the Knicks, Mavericks, and Hawks for the rights to air the bulk of their games.

Some might argue whether or not LeBron James is the best player in the NBA right now, but you can't argue about his earning power.
The Cavaliers forward was crowned the NBA's highest paid player for a second straight year by Forbes Wednesday. The media company pegged James' to rake in roughly $73 million in 2016, $23 million of which will come from the Cavs.
James makes the bulk of his money through his various endorsements and no one in the game comes even close to touching him.

The wins just won't stop for DJ Khaled, as he can now add the title of principal at a middle school to his resumé. The Miami Dade school system announced earlier on Twitter that Khaled was in control of the school for the day, and the reactions were just too good. Basically, most of Twitter is wishing that Khaled was the principal of their school instead, and you can't really blame them.

Ride Along 2 opens in theaters today. The sequel finds actors Ice Cube and Kevin Hart reprising their roles as two in-laws who are also crime-fighting partners. This new installment promises to be bigger and better than its predecessor, and has brought on Olivia Munn, Ken Jeong, and Benjamin Bratt. Which isn't a far fetched claim considering Cube's involvement. A quick shuffle through his filmography showcases his involvement in several sequels that live up to their successors. Cube shared his secret to a successful follow-up film, proving that this wins on the big screen are no accident.

The "worst of the worst" return in the second trailer for Suicide Squad. The first killer trailer premiered at Comic Con this summer and blew away audiences with looks at "the most dangerous people on the planet" in action providing more Margot Robbie gifable moments than one can choose from, first impressions of lesser known characters, and of course, a fleeting, but terrifying look at Jared Leto's Joker. Discussing the villains for hire during the special Will Smith playing Deadshot "the world's greatest marksman" describes the film saying, "It's not a movie about good vs. evil, it's a movie about bad vs. evil.”
Set to the tune of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" the new amped up trailer gives us a crazy look at, well, the crazy Harley Quinn, the Joker, and the Squad blowing stuff up as they embark on what's supposed to be their death sentence. There's loads more of the Joker, including a Tony Montana "Say Hello to My Little Friend" moment, more of El Diablo "guy who burns people," Killer Croc "guy who eats people," Enchantress, and comedic moments like Boomerang's booze break and Harley Quinn's quickie robbery, which she justifies:

Kanye West shared a message on his website tonight from Yasiin Bey f.k.a. Mos Def, who has been detained in South Africa for the last week after being arrested for using fraudulent travel documents. In the audio message, Bey starts off with a "No More Parties in S.A." freestyle, rapping, "I've committed no crime/Why is the state wasting my time?/They must be out of their minds." He also acknowledges his friendship with Kanye with the line, "Thank you Kanye West for being a real friend."
After the freestyle, he launches into a lengthy speech decrying his treatment by the South African government. "I am being prevented from leaving unjustly, unlawfully, and without any reason," he says. "I have reason to believe or suspect that there are political motivations behind the way I'm being treated." He denies using a fraudulent passport, saying "it is not a fictitious document." He also acknowledges Kendrick Lamar. "Shout out to K. Lamar, I see you my dude," he says, and also name-checks Madlib, Talib Kweli, and the Zulu nation.
Towards the end comes perhaps the most surprising part, when he announces, "I am retiring from the music recording industry as it is currently assembled today, and also from Hollywood, effective immediately. I'm releasing my final album this year, and that's that."

Straight Outta Compton's box office success and critical success, both hard to come by simultaneously in films, has opened doors for two long awaited music biopics. One of them is the Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez on Me, finally in production after years, which just announced who's been cast to play Faith Evans. The other is a biopic about Wu-Tang Clan's Ol' Dirty Bastard first said to have been written in 2011 according to RZA who tells Rolling Stone plans for the biopic are moving forward.
According to RZA the biopic was written by a cousin of ODB and his, Rayshawn. "I think it's a great idea, and there has been talk about it. There are a few wheels in motion with one done by our first cousin Rayshawn; he was the young guy there watching everything that happened," RZA told Rolling Stone adding that he's seen a teaser for film calling it "the best thing that I've seen so far." "Him and ODB's wife have been talking and he has a pretty interesting script. I just saw a 12-minute teaser that he shot about a year ago and it felt pretty fucking cool," said RZA. "I watched it and was like, 'Wow, you may have something here.' He has the best thing that I've seen so far."
RZA, who has directed before, with two more films on the way, reportedly turned down the chance to direct the biopic after Rayshawn asked him.

Khloe Kardashian confirmed a very crucial slice of news on Sunday, revealing that she and Lamar Odom "definitely" made a sex tape during their relationship. "I've definitely recorded myself having sex with my ex-husband," Khloe said during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live. Though Khloe adds the tape didn't include cinematic flourishes including "talking to camera," she did confirm its general existence and announce its current location: a locked safe.
"You remember those little cameras?" Khloe asked, perhaps referring to cameras regarded as smaller than their large counterparts. "That was my jam for a moment." As for Lamar Odom's long road to recovery following a health scare in Las Vegas last year, Khloe gave another promising update on his current condition. "It's literally a miracle," Khloe insisted. "He's walking and talking. Doctors are astounded but it’s because of his athleticism. He’s fighting for his life. I really pray that this is a wake-up call for him."
Though the storied couple's future remains unchanged, Khloe once again took the opportunity to ensure everyone that she in no way regrets her relationship with Odom. "I wouldn’t change what I did because it was also some of the best times of my life," Khloe said. "So for me it wasn’t a mistake. I’d say I needed that experience."
Pair this news with Khloe's recent attempt at a casual threesome proposal to Kylie Jenner and Tyga for the complete reading experience.

wn.com/Khloe Kardashian Confirms She Made A Sex Tape

The Game apparently has some issues with 50 Cent and Meek Mill beefing on Instagram, and decided to share his thoughts...on Instagram. In fact, Game has some major problems with any rappers feuding on social media, and aired out his thoughts in a lengthy post on his page. "Even though some of these memes be funny as fuck..... Why do they determine who won a rap beef ??? WTF happened to REAL hip hop & the classic way of handling rap feuds ???," Game wrote.
People will probably be quick to call Game a hypocrite because he himself has beefed with other rappers on Instagram and Twitter, but he mentioned that though he gets sucked into it too, it's not the way to operate. "Never thought I'd see the day when rap beefs were won over iPhone apps & shit," he wrote. "We went from learning from & respecting the O.G.'s to learning from & depending on I.G.'s lol.... Rap all fucked up & niggas is gettin more weird in this shit as the followers pile up." Basically, Game is preaching for rappers to hit the booth to deal with issues with other rappers on wax instead of going to social media. You can't really say that he doesn't have a point either.

Jamie Foxx helped pull a man to safety after a fiery car crash on Monday night, according to KABC. The car, a 2007 Toyota Tacoma, was traveling at a "high rate of speed" when the driver hit a drainage pipe and flipped multiple times. After landing with the passenger side up, the driver was trapped in the vehicle as it reportedly caught fire.
"Jamie didn't hesitate," a representative tells KABC, confirming that the crash occurred near Foxx's home in Hidden Valley. "He jumped out and ran to the car." Another witness, still unnamed at time of publication, reportedly assisted Foxx by breaking the vehicle's windows and cutting the seatbelt. The driver, identified by authorities as 32-year-old Brett Kyle, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and sent to a nearby hospital for what TMZ describes as "major injuries, including burns."
The crash is currently under investigation by Ventura County authorities.

Though all human beings with an active thought process are still pretty bewildered by the fact that Donald Trump is successfully sabotaging the American political process, few have been as recently outspoken as Tracy Morgan. Morgan, still making his way back into the limelight following the tragic 2014 traffic crash that put the comedian in a coma and killed his friend James McNair, stopped by Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show on Monday to let America know how he really feels about his post-coma existence.
"Donald Trump is leading in the polls," Morgan observed, noting that "things are different" since he started his recovery process. Joking that Trump's presence makes him want to "go back" into a coma, Morgan insisted that no one refer to his recent winning streak as a comeback.
Thankfully, Morgan also took the time to cuddle with some puppies:

Over the weekend, Stephen Curry caused quite a stir when he told reporters, "Hopefully, it still smells a little bit like champagne," when asked about what it will be like to return to Cleveland on Monday for the first time since winning the NBA Finals last season. After the quote surfaced, Curry did try to tell his side of the story.
Still, the damage was already done. According to Cleveland.com, Cavaliers players felt Curry's comment was "disrespectful." But, more importantly, what did LeBron James think of what Steph had to say? Unfortunately, no one in the media bothered (or was too scared) to ask James after today's morning shootaround. Then, this happened.
Reporters, please ask James after tonight's contest, please? Thanks!

Last night Esquire Network dropped the premiere of its new series Team Ninja Warrior, a reality competition spin-off of American Ninja Warrior that watches athletes go head-to-head on obstacle courses as teams rather than individually. To prepare for what is certainly going to be some action-packed reality television, Complex's Sean Evans flew out to the Alpha Warrior Gym in San Antonio, Texas to challenge the show's star and the only female to ever complete an ANW Finals course, Kacy "Mighty Kacy" Catanzaro. She became a social media phenomenon with her American Ninja Warrior 6 Finals run, which was viewed millions of times.
To account for the fact that Sean is neither a professional athlete nor a reigning champion of any reality-based competition, TNW gave him a 30-second head start, "which is basically nothing," he adds, "so I got my ass kicked. Naturally." Check out the clip above and be sure to catch the series from Esquire Network on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST.

On Monday, the first part of Sold Out hit the Internet. The subsequent parts rolled out over the rest of the week, but if you've been patiently waiting to take in the entire project in one sitting, your day has come. Above you'll find the full-length cut of Sold Out, with all four parts edited into a single cohesive whole.
If you need a reminder about the story unfolding, here's Complex Style's associate editor Karizza Sanchez:
In 1994, James Jebbia opened the first Supreme location in a small storefront on Lafayette Street in New York. At the time, Supreme was a brand for skaters by skaters—even the design for the shop was more open so skaters could come right in with their skateboards. But today, 21 years later, Supreme is a legendary streetwear brand that’s cultivated a cult following well beyond that original fan base. Continuing to release product in tightly controlled, limited amounts, the brand is as big as it wants to be in New York, Los Angeles, and London; a titan in Japan—arguably its largest market.
Complex has covered Supreme for well over a decade (Complex was founded in 2002). Most of it was from afar; we wrote about releases or lookbooks. But for the last year or so, our Complex News team has been reporting from the Lafayette Street shop to cover in-store launches. Every story was the same: Lines snaked around the block, kids camped out for hours or days, sometimes even in subfreezing temperatures, just to get any Supreme item. Each Thursday drop was chaos. In April 2014, the NYPD canceled the Supreme x Nike Air Foamposite One in-store launch at the NYC flagship after a riot nearly broke out earlier that day.
But there was something much bigger here. We learned that many were in line to purchase gear that they’d later flip online for big profits, selling apparel and other items for as much as 1,200 percent above retail value. “We started to get to know these people and realized there was a business here and real money to be made,” explains Emily Oberg, Complex Editorial Producer and one of the directors of this documentary. While the reselling market is hardly new, and people have been selling Supreme online for years, it’s yet to be the focus of serious investigation—until now.

wn.com/'Sold Out The Underground Economy Of Supreme Resellers' Full Length

For a specific generation, it feels like we've known Pusha T our whole lives, which is a testament to his longevity in the rap game. For almost two decades, he's been making villainous street music with a focus on lyrical dexterity. And that's exactly what his latest project, Darkest Before Dawn: The Prelude, brings to the table.
As an appetizer before his forthcoming King Push album, Darkest Before Dawn makes a strong case for Pusha's claim to the rap throne (a title that gels nicely with his new role as president of G.O.O.D. Music). Complex News with Pusha about his new responsibilities, his thoughts on the current rap landscape, and his mission with this album.
As president of his label, Pusha explains that it's just a more formal acknowledgment of what he's already been doing: focusing on the music, the brand, and how it all connects to fans. Pusha assures fans that G.O.O.D. hasn't faltered, despite the minimal amount of releases, saying, "G.O.O.D. Music is on top because G.O.O.D. Music is the culture. When you think of, you know, just every aspect from music, influence, fashion, art level. If it's not G.O.O.D Music, then it's somebody who was influenced heavily by G.O.O.D. Music."
Switching into artist mode, Push explains that Darkest Before Dawn is "the polar opposite of what's going on in music right now." He says that the goal with this album is to separate himself from the pack by providing a lyrically powerful album amid the climate of melody driven rap. He spoke at length about getting Roc-A-Fella legend Beanie Sigel on the album, saying "I couldn't get [another] writer that good. I need somebody who is gonna be that level." Providing the sonic foundation of the project are titans like Timbaland, Puffy, Kanye, J. Cole, The-Dream, and more.
Teetering between artist and president, Pusha discusses the climate of the rap industry. Echoing his lyrics from "Crutches, Cross, Caskets" he calls other rappers victims: "I just feel like—man, you know, musically and in the music industry right now, I hear a lot of complaining. People just have wild issues. I guess it's a different breed." This type of commentary aligns with Push's recent comments about being the "last rap superhero."

In October 2012 independent video game developers Jonathan Söderström and Dennis Wedin dropped Hotline Miami, a surreal and violent 2D PC game inspired by iconic filmmaker David Lynch and the 2011 film Drive. In just a few months it became the surprise hit of 2012, selling more than 100,000 copies and earning widespread critical acclaim. It would go on to release on Linux, OS X, and several Playstation platforms and spawn a sequel released in March. All of this despite, or maybe because of, how damn difficult the killing missions could be.
We spoke to the creators of Hotline Miami and industry insiders to get the inside story about the game's unexpected success. Watch The Hotline Miami Story above.

Founded in 2004, the decade-strong legacy of Telltale Games is clear: making the story the star of the game. Pulling from the expansive design team's previous experiences at LucasArts, Telltale has continually made a point to push the episodic gaming market forward with each new release. "Telltale makes story games," co-founder Kevin Bruner says. "Story games are more grounded in role-playing and narrative. They're very writing-driven."
For the new Complex original docuseries Magnum Opus Games, viewers are invited to take a 30-minute journey through the creativity-first approach heralded by Telltale's expansive catalog. From their adventurous takes on cinematic classics such as Back to the Future and Jurassic Park to their well-received Minecraft spinoff, Telltale has paired clever marketing with equally clever storytelling to build an unparalleled voice in the video game industry.
As many users move toward a more streamlined future in which movies, music, games, books, and all forms of consumable media are simply one multisensory experience, Telltale remains at the forefront of the innovation conversation.

In the past three decades, new research has revealed that dolphin brains are not only large but are extremely complex in their organization, forming the neurobiological basis for the considerable intelligence and socio-cultural characteristics of dolphins and their relatives, the whales. Dolphin brains are larger than expected for their body size and contain numerous features associated with sophisticated perceptual and cognitive abilities, e.g., echolocation, communication, cooperation and dynamic social networks, cultural transmission of learned behaviors, and self-awareness, to name a few. Because of their very different evolutionary history from our own primate lineage, dolphin and whale brains evolved along very different lines than primate brains. The story of their evolution, dating back 55 million years, is a fascinating example of an alternative route to sophisticated intelligence in different species.
Dr. Lori Marino is a neuroscientist, focused on animal behavior and intelligence, and was on the faculty at Emory University for 19 years. She is the founder and Executive Director of The Kimmela Center for Animal Advocacy, a non-profit organization dedicated to academic and scholarship-based advocacy for other animals. Dr. Marino has gained international prominence for her noninvasive research into dolphin and whale brains and intelligence and comparisons with primates. She has authored over 100 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and magazine articles on marine mammal biology and cognition, comparative neuroanatomy, self-awareness in other animals, human-nonhuman animal relationships, and animal welfare and protection. Dr. Marino co-authored a 2001 ground-breaking study showing that dolphins can recognize themselves in mirrors and she is currently the co- author of a new paper on auditory pathways in dolphin brains.
Dr. Marino was recently featured as a National Geographic Innovator and appears in several films and television programs including the powerful documentary Blackfish, about killer whale captivity, The Ghosts in Our Machine, about the lives of individual animals who we employ as part of our modern society, and Inside Animal Minds, a 2014 BBC special on the evolution of dolphin and whale brains. Dr. Marino is also currently senior scientist for the Someone, Not Something Project, a collaboration between Farm Sanctuary and The Kimmela Center focused on cognition and intelligence in farm animals.
