As the topic changed to the importance of ownership, Dr. Watkins explained his quote, "Own the land on which you stand." "Own something. Either own something or somebody's gonna own you," he clarified.

http://www.vladtv.com - Dr. Boyce Watkins added to his previous statements about 50 Cent's recent bankruptcy hearing during an exclusive video for VladTV, and this time the famed social commentator said that all rappers need to stop lying about their finances. This comes after the Queens rapper revealed that he's worth $4.4 million, not the $155 million reported by Forbes.
Dr. Watkins explained that it puts a strain on others who see the opulent lifestyle that rappers are portraying online, when in reality they are not as rich as it may seem.
"Rappers need to stop lying. Just stop pretending. Stop pretending that you're living a life that you cannot afford! It's stressful on you, and it's stressful on the people that are watching you. Because when I see you living a certain lifestyle I'm going to think that I must not be doing that well, that I'm a failure."
Dr. Watkins also questioned 50 Cent's claims that he only made $150,000 off of two seasons of his hit show "Power," which you can hear more about in the above clip.

http://www.vladtv.com - Established author and analyst Dr. Boyce Watkins is known in the hip-hop industry for voicing his opinion on issues pertaining to the field and not being afraid to do so. Case in point, Lil Wayne, a rapper who Boyce Watkins has had issues with for years.
Most know the story between the two: Dr. Boyce Watkins was fed up with Weezy's often violent and berating lyrics, and after finding out about his deal with beverage company Mountain Dew he contacted them directly and Wayne ultimately lost his deal. Interestingly enough, it was Tyler, the Creator's racially-charged commercial that gave Boyce Watkins the spark he needed to get Wayne's attention, and after getting caught in the crossfire Tyler lost his deal as well. Dr. Boyce Watkins on the other hand, was happy that his plan worked. "It wasn't that I like seeing people lose money, but it was the fact that I needed [Lil Wayne] to understand that you can't just go make your money and say "f*** the whole Black community," Boyce Watkins stated.
When it comes to Tyler, the social commentator has apologized and offered to speak with him one-on-one several times. "I didn't f*** you over Tyler, it was Mountain Dew who f***** you over because they should not have let you just do whatever you want without at least reviewing the political implications of what you were putting out." He says he even gave his number to a mutual friend of theirs to give to the Golf Wang frontman, but unfortunately never received a call.
Watch on as Dr. Boyce Watkins explains yet again why he couldn't deal with Tyler's commercial or Lil Wayne's demeaning lyrics in another exclusive clip with the well-respected social activist.

http://www.vladtv.com - Everyone has their own definition of rich and poor. If you ask Dr. Boyce Watkins, he'll tell you that he feels poor people are those who can't afford a home, food or basic clothing and are "barely keeping their head above water," but feels certain entertainers who make lots of money can still be squeezed into that category due to their ways of thinking.
"A lot of the billionaires I know don't dress like billionaires. They don't try to floss or show what they have because they're comfortable with who they are," says Boyce Watkins. The author believes that when it comes to several African American entertainers and athletes, they are sucked into what he calls the "Black Financial Addiction."
In this interview Vlad recalls times he's talked to his athlete friends, and not once were investments and future business plans discussed in their locker rooms, but instead mentions of their new purchases and girlfriends. Dr. Boyce Watkins feels this happens because they're "compensating for something that's missing on the inside" and the people in their circle don't truly care about their well-being, which leads to the average athlete becoming broke a few years after leaving the league.
Watch on as Dr. Boyce Watkins voices why college athletes should be paid, how Black people attempt to buy their humanity because they already grow up believing they are "three-fifths of a human being," and hear his advice to the people who are stuck in debt. "One of the easiest ways to build wealth is to stop spending so much money in the first damn place. Realize the difference between what you want and what you need."

http://www.vladtv.com - In this thought-provoking clip Dr. Boyce Watkins discusses why he wrote "Financial Lovemaking 101: Merging Assets With Your Partner in Ways That Feel Good." Throughout the advice guide the financial professor reveals valuable information about remaining financially stable throughout your relationships, because according to him, "the easiest way to go broke is to have a bunch of baby's mamas."
"A lot of people will pick relationships based on things that really don't matter," proclaims Boyce Watkins as he points out the people who go for "swag" and "a**" when choosing a potential partner. He also delves into Chris Rock's legal battles with his estranged wife Malaak Compton-Rock. Though the two filed a prenup, the Sunset provision in the agreement caused it to expire after their 18th year of marriage. Now Malaak - who Chris filed for divorce from after nearly 20 years - is seeking at least a third of his $70 million dollar net worth along with alimony and child support. Dr. Boyce Watkins - who believes Chris Rock's views on marriage "have not been favorable" for years - feels that situations like theirs can be tricky, as the marriage debate leaves many people in limbo over what is deserved after one divorces from their spouse.
At the end of the day, Boyce Watkins tells us like he tells his own daughters, "every date is a potential mate." He also feels people need to understand that "the greatest and most important investment you will make in your life is probably the decision of who you spend your life with. So do not take that decision lightly."
Watch on as Dr. Boyce Watkins includes people's choice of friends into the equation and why your life should be your most protected asset in this VladTV exclusive.

Becoming rich at a young age is "intoxicating" says Dr. Boyce Watkins. The social commentator and financial analyst recently found out about superproducer Scott Storch filing for bankruptcy, and he says he can't blame him since he's involved in the hip-hop culture, one that is "built on excess." Boyce Watkins does feel, however, that Storch should have better placed his money and that people overall need to realize that "money is meant for investment" and not consumption as many have grown to believe.
"This idea of feeling like because you have money you have to show people how much money you have, that is a recipe for absolute, total disaster," Dr. Boyce Watkins proclaims. Scott Storch was once a man with over 13 cars "spending $250,000 on foreign trips," Boyce Watkins says he read. Now, the music maker for some of today's hottest stars has merely $100 in cash and has let his life spiral out of control due to his drug usage. "When you ball like that, you become a magnet for every broke a** friend that you have who's gonna need money," he added, including that as a reason why some stars may go broke. Dr. Boyce Watkins' advice for not falling into the same pattern? Don't do drugs and invest your money into several businesses. Hear more of his take above.
Dr. Boyce Watkins recently introduced "The Black Wealth Bootcamp," a five-week online program that will teach people wealth-building strategies and show them how to create successful businesses. To sign up, click here: https://yourblackworld.wufoo.com/forms/z1rq1ygy0tm88ds/

http://www.vladtv.com - Dr. Boyce Watkins made another video exclusively for VladTV where he discussed 50 Cent and his current financial issues. 50 - who Boyce Watkins feels has "fallen off a bit music-wise but he's still relevant," recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after being ordered to pay $5 million in a sex tape case. "You're a grown man," Dr. Boyce Watkins goes on to say as he addresses Fifty directly. "A grown a** man has no business getting involved in teenager s***."
The financial scholar also believes 50 Cent's social media actions are immature, as him and his friends take to Instagram to show off their expensive cars and flash their money. Dr. Boyce feels Black men need to better support their women and children. "You don't prove to people how much money you got by throwing money away," Boyce Watkins advises, adding that Black people "need grown men in the community, not little children."
Press play to hear him define bankruptcy protection, explain why the financial state of hip-hop is "just not that healthy," and why people of a wealthier status than most cannot do the things they once did in Dr. Boyce Watkins' latest clip.

http://www.vladtv.com - Leading scholar and social commentator, Dr. Boyce Watkins of Financial Juneteenth offers his perspective to VladTV as it relates to Hip-Hop's MCs earnings and how they manage their money. The conversation soon centered on the self-made independent artist Tech N9ne - who Boyce Watkins feels is one of "the greatest rappers in the world right now" - and how he successfully made the Forbes' 2014 Hip-Hop Cash Kings List.
"Tech N9ne is a brother out of Kansas City, MO who is killing it...he actually turned down a deal for $60 million," shares Dr. Boyce before adding, "A lot of the reason that he can turn down deals of that magnitude is because Tech has figured out the secret of how to make your own money."
That comment is soon expounded upon when the analyst offers that "you don't have to go through any industry begging and borrowing and asking people for an opportunity - you can create your own. And the best thing about being independent is when you sign yourself you'll never fire yourself."
Dr. Boyce later contends that the "Anghellic" lyricist's business acumen has helped him to create his burgeoning empire. "He's truly different not only in terms of his amazing rapid fire lyrical style, but in the way that he's been able to monetize his ability in such an effective way." Make sure you watch the entire clip to find out the "Three Tech Tips" that everyone needs to know in order to make the most money from your business and why Dr. Boyce Watkins feels that "walking away from education is the hugest mistake that any human being could ever make."

http://www.vladtv.com - "If you go to college for four years and you step out with a hundred thousand in loans, that you know you'll never be able to pay back in your life, you have to really ask yourself if that's the only way that you can get what you need."
Dr. Boyce Watkins in no way, shape or form believes going to college is a bad decision. He does, however, feel that there are other roads you can take in order to become successful. "What's the purpose of getting an education if you're going to die in debt?" he asks viewers in this exclusive clip. "I really don't think, in this current economic environment - given the changes that have occurred in America and in the world in the last 15 years - that college has to be the first and only choice for every family."
Throughout the video, Dr. Boyce Watkins gives his three reasons as to why people should not attend college. Aside from the obvious cost of college being extremely expensive, in his own words, "the economy has changed a lot." "There are studies that show that a White man with a criminal record has about the same opportunities of getting a job as a Black man with a degree. A White man with a high school diploma has as good of a opportunity to get a job as a Black man with a degree. So racism is real," he explains. "Black people are booted out of the economic system."
Watch as the established analyst explains why college-dropouts "are not stupid for doing so," as well as why he believes Google and YouTube are better resources than any university in the world in another insightful exclusive.

http://www.vladtv.com - Recently, leading scholar and social commentator Dr. Boyce Watkins gave VladTV an exclusive interview; this portion of the in-depth dialogue broaches the topics of Dave Chappelle taking a sabbatical from show business and how everyone has some sort of boss.
When questioned about Dave Chappelle shirking the spotlight during the pinnacle of his popularity, Dr. Boyce Watkins offers his perspective saying, "I think Dave ran into the curse of being too authentic of a human being to be at that particular level," adding, "I think when you get to that level of fame - where there's that much money on the line - and you're dealing with so many warped incentives from people who only care about money, who are only there to worship money -- it's much, much harder to be an artist."
Sincerity encompasses his statement as Dr. Boyce Watkins offers, "It's much, much harder to be a good person, it's much, much harder to do what you truly love as opposed to doing what you need to do to fit some model that's being run by a corporation. Nobody's going to put $50 million on the line without a lot of restrictions and safeguards in place."
Watch the full clip to get more of Dr. Boyce Watkins' thoughts on Dave Chappelle safeguarding his integrity and happiness and refusing to become enslaved to a corporation, and his thoughts on being a boss versus having a boss and saving versus flipping money.

When the Fox Network released the new show, "Empire," I was concerned about what I might see on screen. Fox is not known for producing the most favorable images of black people, so I figured this show wouldn't be any different.
If you do some research, you might notice some of the same things I've seen seeing portrayed in this ghetto-fied drama: Pimps, hoes, thugs, gangsters, and all kinds of other kinds of stereotypical coonery that many of us have grown tired of seeing portrayed on the TV screen.
Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson are two of my favorite actors. They are incredibly talented and deserve every opportunity to make their money. But this is a show that I cannot support, because I'm sick and tired of black people being spoon-fed negative imagery of who we are and eating it up like hungry little puppies.
I also have a few things to say about Lee Daniels and his admitting that he'd like to use the show to "blow the lid off of homophobia in the black community." I'm not sure why black people are always the target of this kind of propaganda, especially when there are millions of white conservatives who have their own issues with homosexuality as well.
Here's what I think about the show.

http://www.vladtv.com - Four-time NBA all-star Vin Baker acquired nearly $100 million throughout the course of his career. The 43-year-old now works as a Starbucks barista in Rhode Island after struggling with alcoholism and losing it all, a story that comes as a shock to many. According to Dr. Boyce Watkins, the worst part is the fact that his children, their children and so on and so forth will now have to start over entirely. "100 million dollars - having that kind of money and having that money go out of your hands, that's just a financial tragedy of epic proportions," the social commentator expresses to us.
"You have to work really, really hard to waste 100 million dollars. I mean, you've just got to be beyond financially sloppy - you've got to be financially self-destructive," he continues. Dr. Boyce Watkins believes the large sum of money in question should have aided Baker and his loved ones "for the next 300 years," and knows it would have had the former baller set up trust funds and sought the help of financial advisors.
Surely entertainers and athletes with money can spend their earnings on "European brands that don't wanna hire Black people," the "People's Scholar" states, but he strongly advises said celebrities to save a certain percentage of their income monthly. Listen above as Dr. Boyce Watkins provides simple guidelines in order for one to be financially stable in the future.

http://www.vladtv.com - Back in 2011 Dr. Boyce Watkins wrote a column entitled "BET Has Officially Become the New and Improved KKK" where he cited that Lil Wayne and similar artists are promoting black-on-black violence and that the Black-founded network is standing by it. Four years later, he says he's "seen some transition," but "still has a bone to pick" with the "excessively materialistic and capitalist" company.
"A lot of their damage was done during the first 20-25 years of their existence," Boyce Watkins states in the interview. He feels that the Black community has become a "target of your toxic waste" and BET has failed to recognize it, focusing more on the money they're generating than the content they play for their younger audience. "When it comes to BET, I'm still not happy with a lot of what I see," he says.
Though Dr. Boyce Watkins credits them for becoming more diverse in the past five years or so, when he sees BET promoting acts like Young Thug and Rich Homie Quan and the children who emulate them, he doesn't see a good future for them or the community.
Because Boyce Watkins lives in the areas where there are alarming rises in the murder rate, he feels he has to be the one to speak out because the BET execs who promote this behavior "don't live in those neighborhoods [and] don't see the homicides." His advice to them? "Think about what you're putting out here into the world and what you're doing to your people," because the media "is leading kids in the Southside of Chicago to blow each other's brains out because it's being glorified in media."
Catch what else he had to say about the network and its help in the deterioration of positive Black images above.

http://www.vladtv.com - Today on VladTV Dr. Boyce Watkins shares his thoughts on America and the spending habits of its citizens. As America continues to regress, Boyce Watkins feels the government will "continue to f*** you for all of eternity" if we don't change our investment strategies.
The well-respected social commentator shared a few key pieces of advice for the middle class: simply emulate wealthy people's habits. "If you wanna be like the rich and not get left behind, do what the rich do," says Boyce Watkins, expressing that investments should be spread out instead of most of your money going into your home, which most Americans do.
Dr. Boyce Watkins also spoke on Meek Mill's track "Dreams and Nightmares" where he raps about purchasing high-end cars though "y'all thought it was leased." The perception is that if you lease a car rather than actually purchase it, it automatically makes it "less yours." Boyce Watkins feels expensive cars are a bad investment overall, citing that "to even think of a car as any part of your investment portfolio on any level is flawed thinking" and to lease would be "the better approach."

Nicki Minaj isn't one of the artists caught up in a racially fueled Twitter war at the moment, but that doesn't mean she's not upset about ongoing injustice in our society.
In her new Rolling Stone interview, the rapper opens up about recent incidents of police violence against black Americans, including the unpunished killing of Eric Garner.
"It's sickening, and I've been reading so many people saying, 'Why are we surprised?' That's what's really sad: that we should somehow be used to being treated like animals," she tells the mag. "It's gotten to the point where people feel like there's no accountability: If you are law enforcement and you do something to a black person, you can get away with it."
NEWS: What did Mike Myers think when Kanye West went off-teleprompter?
Mike Myers, Kanye West NBC
"I feel like when Public Enemy were doing 'Fight the Power,' we as a culture had more power—now it feels hopeless," Nicki tells Rolling Stone. "People say, 'Why aren't black celebrities speaking out more?' But look what happened to Kanye [West] when he spoke out. People told him to apologize to [George W.] Bush!"
Nicki, of course, is referring to the time in 2005 when Kanye went off-teleprompter during a telethon raising funds for Hurricane Katrina victims. Standing alongside Mike Myers, the rapper vented about racism in the media before declaring, "George Bush doesn't care about black people."
"He was the unofficial spokesman for hip-hop, and he got torn apart," Nicki recalls. And like she says, Kanye did apologize to Bush, but it seemed to be on his own volition. In a 2005 Today interview, he admitted, "in my moment of frustration, I didn't have the grounds to call him a racist," adding, "we as human beings don't always choose the right words."

A BLACK LIFE COACHES EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW!
Young black Americans are all wondering how to better prepare himself or herself for achieving a better position professionally. Is now, in the time of Obama, the best time for getting that corner office? What can we as a group do different in roles of leadership today and in these times? This interview lends great inside in to these and much more, such as working through the anger at not getting the success we feel we deserve in corporate America and knowing who you are as a person and professional. Dr. Boyce Watkins joins Dr. Towanna Freeman in the C-Suite to answer the following questions:
1. How would you describe the current climate for African American professionals in corporate America regarding career opportunities? Specifically, middle managers with aspirations of promotion to more senior levels of management.
2. Do you believe the climate is different for African American men versus women?
3. What advice would you give to recent college graduates entering the workforce or professional life in the era of now twice elected President Obama?
5. As we look down the road at the 2016 presidential election and the clamor for a woman president, specifically, Hilary Clinton, how do you see the possible election of a woman president effecting African American?
