Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote his Symphony No. 40 in G minor, KV. 550, in 1788. The 40th Symphony was completed on 25 July 1788. The composition occupied an exceptionally productive period of just a few weeks in 1788, dur

In 1960, [Josef] Krips recorded Beethoven's nine symphonies for Everest Records. For this set of recordings, Krips conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, and for the Symphony No. 9, the soloists included Donald Bell, baritone, Jennifer Vyvyan, soprano, Rudolf Petrak, tenor, and Shirley Carter (later known as Shirley Verrett), mezzo soprano. The BBC Chorus, under the chorusmaster Leslie Woodgate also performed. This series of recordings was popular with music critics and the public, and the recordings have been reissued several times in authorized and in bootleg editions.

Lyrics:
Bill Nye:
We are at a time in history where we can change the world
What do we want to pass on to future generations?
That we just stayed here on Earth, that we didn’t look out
to find out where we come from and are we alone?
No!
We want to pass on this joy. This excitement.
Neil deGrasse Tyson:
When a nation dreams big, everything falls into place.
Nye:
Beyond the horizon
Over the next hill
That’s where we make discoveries
Tyson:
That’s the next frontier
Nye:
It is in us to look farther and deeper
It’s deep within us
That is why we are all here
Over the next hill, beyond the horizon
Tyson:
Dream of tomorrow
Long for the open seas
Call for this adventure
Dream big
Dream of tomorrow
Long for the open seas
Emily Lakdawalla:
There are lots of huge frozen worlds
Caught beyond Neptune
Huge frozen worlds
Seek out these other worlds
Hundreds of other worlds
Caught beyond Neptune
Seek out these other worlds
Tyson:
Audacious visions have the power to alter mindsets
To change assumptions about what is possible
[refrain]
Nye:
If we are to discover life on another world,
It will change the way everyone feels about what it is to be a living thing in the Cosmos.
Tyson:
Is a virus alive? Is crystal alive?
Does life need this, does life need liquid water?
Is a virus alive? Does life have metabolism?
Does life need, life need, life need, life need this?
Is a virus alive? Is crystal alive?
They’re asking these questions
Bill Nye:
Working together I claim we can
Change the world!
Carl Sagan:
There’s just a tremendously exciting prospect called solar sailing
And it works exactly as an ordinary sailboat does
It takes you to where you wanna go
It’s a whole new kind of idea
It travels on the wind from the sun
X2
Tyson:
These dreams prevail in the citizen’s ambitions.
It is time to set sail for the 21st Century.
[refrain]
Tyson:
Find your place in space
Space is vast and unexplored
And there’s a lot of work to do.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote his Symphony No. 40 in G minor, KV. 550, in 1788. It is sometimes referred to as the "Great G minor symphony," to distinguish it from the "Little G minor symphony," No. 25. The two are the only minor key symphonies Mozart wrote. The 40th Symphony was completed on 25 July 1788. The composition occupied an exceptionally productive period of just a few weeks in 1788, during which time he also completed the 39th and 41st symphonies (26 June and 10 August, respectively). The symphony is scored (in its revised version) for flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, and strings. Notably missing are trumpets and timpani.
The work is in four movements, in the usual arrangement (fast movement, slow movement, minuet, fast movement) for a classical-style symphony:
1. Molto allegro, 2/2
2. Andante, 6/8
3. Menuetto. Allegretto -- Trio, 3/4
4. Finale. Allegro assai, 2/2.
Every movement but the third is in sonata form; the minuet and trio are in the usual ternary form. This work has elicited varying interpretations from critics. Robert Schumann regarded it as possessing "Grecian lightness and grace". Donald Francis Tovey saw in it the character of opera buffa. Almost certainly, however, the most common perception today is that the symphony is tragic in tone and intensely emotional; for example, Charles Rosen (in The Classical Style) has called the symphony "a work of passion, violence, and grief."
Although interpretations differ, the symphony is unquestionably one of Mozart's most greatly admired works, and it is frequently performed and recorded. Ludwig van Beethoven knew the symphony well, copying out 29 measures from the score in one of his sketchbooks. It is thought that the opening theme of the last movement may have inspired Beethoven in composing the third movement of his Fifth Symphony.

36:19 IV. Stürmisch bewegt (22:09)
Whenever Claudio Abbado conducts the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA, music lovers are in for a very special event. Such was the case in the summer of 2009, when the charismatic Italian conductor opened Lucerne's tradition-rich Festival with a concert featuring Mahler's First Symphony and Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto. In 2003 Abbado, together with Artistic and Executive Director Michael Haefliger, founded the orchestra, which consists of internationally renowned soloists and chamber musicians - just as did its model, the elite body of musicians that Arturo Toscanini gathered around hirn at the Festival's founding in 1938. lt was with this first-class ensemble that Abbado offered a vividly inspired interpretation of the Mahler. In truth - as the audience's response demonstrated - it left nothing to be desired. The twenty-two-year-old Chinese Pianist Yuja Wang likewise earned enthusiastic applause for her account of the Prokofiev Concerto, which she played with character and nuanced expression.
The theme of nature served es the guiding thread for all the programming choices during the summer of 2009 - a theme with obvious relevance for the LUCERNE FESTIVAL, which is held amid one of the most beautitul landscapes of Europe: its concerts incIude unforgettable views of Lake Lucerne and Alpine panoramas. This theme, es it happens, has eminent musical significance es well: 'Like a sound of nature' is the direction Mahler inscribed at the very beginning of the First Symphony.

Ralph Vaughan Williams - Symphony No. 2 (1913)

III. Scherzo [Nocturne]: Allegro vivace - Andantino - 31:27
IV. Andante con moto - Maestoso alla marcia [quasi lento] - Allegro - Andantino ma sostenuto - Tempo primo - Allegro - Lento - Epilogue: Andante sostenuto - Lento - 42:34
Ralph Vaughan Williams was born in the Gloucestershire village of Down Ampney in 1872, the son of a clergyman. His ancestry on both his father's and mother's side was of some intellectual distinction. His father was descended from a family eminent in the law, while his maternal grandfather was a Wedgwood and his grandmother a Darwin. On the death of his father in 1875 the family moved to live with his mother's father at Leith Hill Place in Surrey. As a child Vaughan Williams learned the piano and the violin, and received a conventional upper middle class education at Charterhouse, after which he delayed entry to Cambridge, preferring instead to study at the Royal College of Music, where his teachers included Hubert Parry and Walter Parratt, later Master of the Queen's Musick, both soon to be knighted. In 1892 he took up his place at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he read History, but took composition lessons from Charles Wood. After graduation in both History and Music, he returned to the Royal College, where he studied composition with Stanford, and, perhaps more significant, became a friend of a fellow-student, Gustav Holst. The friendship with Holst was to prove of great importance in frank exchanges of views on one another's compositions in the years that followed.
In 1897 Vaughan Williams married and took the opportunity to visit Berlin, where he had lessons from Max Bruch and widened his musical experience. In England he turned his attention to the collection of folk-music in various regions of the country, an interest that materially influenced the shape of his musical language. In 1908 he went to Paris to take lessons, particularly in orchestration, from Ravel, and had by now begun to make a reputation for himself as a composer, not least with the first performance in 1910 of his first symphony, A Sea Symphony, setting words by Walt Whitman, and his Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis in the same year. The even tenor of his life was interrupted by the war, when he enlisted at once in the Royal Army Medical Corps as a private. 1914 was also the year of the London Symphony and of his rhapsodic work for violin and orchestra, The Lark Ascending. Three years later, after service in Salonica that seemed to him ineffective, he took a commission in the Royal Garrison Artillery and was posted to France. There he was also able to make some use of his abilities as a musician.
After the war Vaughan Williams returned to the Royal College of Music, now as a professor of composition, a position he retained until 1938. In these years he came to occupy a commanding position in the musical life of the country, with a series of compositions that seemed essentially English, the apparent successor of Elgar, although his musical language was markedly different. The war of 1939 brought the challenge of composition for the cinema, with notable scores for The 49th Parallel in 1940 and a number of other films, culminating in 1949 in his music for the film Scott of the Antarctic, the basis of the seventh of his symphonies. Other works of the last decade of his life included two more symphonies, the opera The Pilgrim's Progress, a violin sonata and concertos for harmonica and for tuba, remarkable adventures for an octogenarian. He remained active until his death in 1958.

Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony was first played in the city of its birth on 9 August, 1942. There has never been a first performance to match it. Pray God, there never will be again. Almost a year earlier, the Germans had begun their blockade of the city. Already many thousands had died of their wounds, the cold, and most of all, starvation. The assembled musicians scrounged from frontline units and military bands, for only twenty of the orchestra’s 100 players had survived were so hungry, many feared they’d be too weak to play the score right through. In these, the darkest days of the Second World War, the music and the defiance it inspired provided a rare beacon of light for the watching world. In Leningrad: Siege and Symphony , Brian Moynahan sets the composition of Shostakovich’s most famous work against the tragic canvas of the siege itself and the years of repression and terror that preceded it. In vivid and compelling detail he tells the story of the cruelties heaped by the twin monsters of the twentieth century on a city of exquisite beauty and fine minds, and of its no less remarkable survival. Weaving Shostakovich’s own story and that of many others into the context of the maelstrom of Stalin’s purges and the brutal Nazi invasion of Russia, Leningrad: Siege and Symphony is a magisterial and moving account of one of the most tragic periods in history.

Great presentation (in my personal opinion, one of the greatest recordings of all time) of the legendary conductor Leonard Bernstein with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Edinburgh Festival Chorus, Sheila Armstrong (soprano) and Janet Baker (mezzo-soprano) playing the Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection" of Gustav Mahler, at Edinburgh Festival 1974.

Beethoven's 6th Symphony (Pastoral)
A Love of Nature
The Pastoral Symphony is a charming masterpiece which both paints a picture of nature and describes man's feelings towards it. Beethoven's great love of nature, the delight in strolling through the countryside in Vienna, the fact that he always found his equilibrium in the heart of nature, all these inspired him to create his sixth symphony.
Beethoven's 6th Symphony is filled with colorful sounds, simple folk tunes, nice development, and a feeling of calm beauty. It contains meaningful emotional aspect which reflects mankind's feelings towards the natural world.
Beethoven began sketching out his 6th symphony in 1802 and finished it in 1808. "How happy I am to be able to walk among the shrubs, the trees, the woods, the grass and the rocks! For the woods, the trees and the rocks give man the resonance he needs," Beethoven said in the summer of 1808. The premiere of the 6th Symphony was probably the grandest musical event in Beethoven's life. It was a massive concert packed with indelible moments of brand new Beethoven music!
This programmatic endeavor is clearly expressed through the suggestive title of the symphony, as well as through the titles of each movement. When Beethoven found refuge in the midst of nature, he jotted down themes inspired by the trill of birds, the trickling of creeks or the rustle of leaves. In a notebook from 1803 was found an outline of a river's trickling with the additional note: "The greater the river, the more grave the tone."
Beethoven spread out the symphony into five movements and gave each movement a little subtitle explaining what it was about.
I. "Happy Arrival" (Awakening of cheerful feelings upon arrival in the country)
The Pastoral symphony opens with warmth and calm, setting the scene as we arrive in the countryside. This has a programmatic indication. In this movement, we find a genuine popular sonority through the choice of instruments neatly weaved together.
II. "By the Brook" (The natural scene of the stream)
This slow movement is a beautiful depiction of the delicate nature of... nature itself. It is a wonderful scene of nature with exceptionally musical themes in the pure pastoral air. You can almost breathe the fresh country air! It is more of a description of sensations rather than images. Towards the end, we find the onomatopoeic sounds of birds.
III. "Merrymaking" (Joyful gathering of countryfolk)
Now we turn our attention to the loud, jolly peasants who live in the countryside. Here we see them celebrate with a joyful dance. Of course, these are simple folks, so the music itself is simple, but very energetic.
IV. "ThunderStorm" (Heavy rumblings of natural forces) 29:21
With no pause between the previous movement and this movement, there is a dramatic surprise, hinting at trouble ahead. Yes, a storm is brewing! Beethoven inserts fantastic lightning crashes and the whirl of the wind. He renders the stages of the storm as it unravels on the horizon and moves closer more and more threatening. The instruments with grave chords -- cellos and double basses -- through their sounds announce the storm, then, the staccato sounds of the violins render the falling raindrops, and through the timpani and the flutes we sense the thunder and lightning. Then comes the rainbow. Above all these images, we feel the tense disposition that captures man facing the realities of nature. There's an underlying sense of human fear since humanity is powerless against the forces of nature. When the storm is over, all living creatures come to the surface, taking their place in the natural cycle. This is rendered by a choral of flutes which come as a true sunray.
V. "Shepherd's Song" (Expression of thanks when the storm is over)
As the storm fades away, all the animals emerge, and there's a general feeling of relief. Sunshine reappears, and everyone's mind is relaxed again. This is the song of gratitude towards nature. It is a calm movement, full of grace. It starts out quiet, but quickly gets faster and happier. The music is fairly simple, but this makes its emotions of gratitude endearing.
Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony, through its simplicity, is just sincere and natural.
