On February 24th, 2015, Marriot International opened a 175-room hotel in Haiti -- a $45 million investment in partnership with Digicel, the Caribbean cellphone company based in Haiti. With an estimated unemployment rate of 40.6% , this new hotel is expected to employ 200 Haitian residents. But will foreign investments, such as this, actually help improve Haiti’s economy?

English/Nat
While peacekeeping efforts in Haiti push forward, the future for the battered economy remains bleak.
As many as 70-percent of the population remain under-employed or jobless.
Hopes are resting on recently reinstated president, Jean Bertrand Aristide, to breathe some life into the country's weakening economy.
While high hopes for peace may be cheering up beleaguered Haitians - a battered economy may keep spirits low.
No new jobs are being created for the these needy nationals who have endured three years of harsh military rule and international sanctions.
Living in poverty-level conditions, the Haitian people need jobs and they need help to get them.
SOUNDBITE:
We will continue to be a major source of assistance to Haiti, much of it coming, I hope, from the private sector which is the real source of jobs and economic growth.
SUPERCAPTION: William Swing, US Ambassador to Haiti
Many American companies left Haiti during the 3-year military regime and are reluctant to return.
US businessmen, still active in the newly democratised nation, are hoping for their return.
SOUNDBITE:
To induce a company back that has left Haiti and has been relatively successful, even though their costs might be slightly higher, is not an easy task.
SUPERCAPTION: William Reed, US Businessman
Concerns for the economy are weighing heaviest on the shoulders of newly reinstated President Jean Bertrand Aristide.
He envisages a bright future for the Caribbean nation but is realistic about their current economic malaise.
SOUNDBITE:
We expect on the other side those who can help us by coming to invest or by keeping their promise will move a bit faster in order to have not only one side moving with the flag of reconciliation and justice but others moving with the flag of economy.
SUPERCAPTION: Jean Bertrand Aristide, President of Haiti
US President Bill Clinton visited Port-au-Prince for the transfer ceremony on Friday.
He said the U.S. mission had succeeded in its three main objectives: force the military regime from power; return ousted President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to office, and ensure a stable and secure environment.
He also promised the Haitians continued support from the United States.
SOUNDBITE:
We, you neighbours, your allies and your friends will support your efforts to create jobs, to attract investment from beyond your borders and to rebuild and repair your injured land.
SUPERCAPTION: US President, Bill Clinton
Still standing on fragile ground - the people of Haiti are only just getting used to their new government.
Those who have work are lucky - those who do not - will continue to hope.
