Vasai Creek is an estuarine creek, one of the two main distributaries of the Ulhas River in Maharashtra state of western India. The Ulhas splits at the northeast corner of Salsette Island into its two main distributaries, Vasai Creek and Thane Creek. Vasai Creek forms the northern boundary of Salsette Island, and empties west into the Arabian Sea; Thane creek empties southwards into Bombay Harbour.
To the south of the creek lies the Bhayandar shore which is developed on both sides of the railway track. 2 railway bridges connect Naigaon and other stations to the Western suburbs. Old bridge was considered to be built during the British Raj and has been closed since it was declared dangerous to commute. The new bridge is functional and has 4 tracks. Bhayandar sea shore sees a huge number of people in the evenings which has been developed recently with protective measures for over enthusiasts. It houses a children park, playing ground, pooja area, visarjan area for idol immersion on the east side. On the west you have small garden benches where people can sit and chat. Small paths lowering into the sea also exist where people can stand and watch the waves hitting the shoreline.

Indian Railways :- 22107 / Mumbai CST-Latur SF Express hauled by Kalyan (KYN) WDM3D #11358 goes at superb speed from Kurla stn of CR !!
Kurla is one of the busiest and important station of Central Railway, Mumbai.
Latur – Mumbai CST Express is a superfast express train belonging to Indian Railways that runs between Mumbai CST and Latur in India. It is a daily service. It operates as train number 22107 from Mumbai to Latur and as train number 22108 in the reverse direction.
History of Kurla Station:-
The Suburb gets its name from the East Indian village of Kurla, whose name in turn originated from "Kurli", the local name for crab, as these were found in plenty in marshes in the vicinity of the village. The village of Kurla came under Portuguese rule when the Treaty of Bassein (1534) was signed by Sultan Bahadur of Gujarat and the Kingdom of Portugal on 23 December 1534. In 1548, the village of Kurla and six other villages were given by the Governor of Portuguese India to Antonio Pessoa as a reward for his military services. Kurla remained under Portuguese rule until the British occupied Salsette Island in 1774. The island was formally ceded to the East India Company in the 1782 Treaty of Salbai.
In 1805, Kurla was connected to Sion on Bombay Island by the Sion Causeway. Coorla, as it was spelt during the British Raj until 1890, was a major station on the Great Indian Peninsula Railway between Bombay and Thane, the first railway line in British India when it opened in 1853.
In 1808, Kurla, along with the villages of Mohili, Kolekalyan, Marol, Sahar, Asalphe, and Parjapur, were given by the British to a Parsi merchant of Bombay, Mr. Hormasji Bamanji Wadia in exchange for a piece of land near the Apollo pier gate in Bombay. His Son, Mr. Ardeshir Hormasji Wadia, after whom the A. H. Wadia Road was named, paid for them a yearly Quit-rent of £358 (Rs. 3587).
Kurla had two cotton mills, one of them, the Dharamsi Punjabhai, being the largest cotton spinning and weaving mill in the Bombay Presidency, with 92,094 spindles and 1280 looms. The other was the Kurla Spinning and Weaving Mill. Kurla village had a population of 9,715 at that time. About half of them worked in the mills, while the rest were fishermen, husbandmen (farmers) and salt-makers. The Holy Cross Church at Kurla, built during the Portuguese rule and rebuilt in 1848, is one of the oldest churches in Mumbai.
The Mithibai Hormasji Wadia Dispensary was built by Mr. Bamanji Hormasji Wadia in 1855, and endowed by him with £1200 (Rs. 12,000). It was in charge of an assistant surgeon, and, in 1880–81, had an attendance of 7367 out-patients. The salt pans covered an area of about 66 acres (270,000 m2) and yielded a yearly revenue of £3418 (Rs. 34,180). There was also a considerable manufacture of shell lime. The Stone quarries of Kurla were well known and supplied material for the construction of most of the city's famous heritage buildings like the Prince of Wales Museum, and the General Post Office among others.
The beginning of the twentieth century saw Kurla develop as an important centre of the mill industry. In 1910, there were reported to be several mills in Kurla, engaged in the manufacturing of cotton cloth and woollen cloth in steam factories. Kurla, however, was an old textile industrial core, an outlier to the main cotton mill zone. A relatively cheaper land value and nearness to water and power mains enabled rapid industrial expansion of the suburbs and the Kurla-Ghatkopar-Vikhroli-Bhandup belt soon developed into the largest industrial zone in the suburbs of Mumbai.
The Central Railway began its Harbour Line services from Kurla to Reay Road station on 12 December 1910. This service was extended to Victoria Terminus in 1925. The Kurla Railway Car-shed was constructed in 1925 when electrification of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR) Harbour line was undertaken. The first electric train in Asia that ran between CST and Coorla on February 3, 1925 was maintained at this car shed. The Salsette-Trombay Railway, also known as the Central Salsette Tramway, opened in 1928. The 13 kilometre line, a project of the Bombay Improvement Trust run by the GIPR, ran from Trombay to Andheri via Kurla and lasted only a few years.
During the late fifties and sixties, the old Kurla neighbourhood developed into an automobile industrial zone, with the erection of the Premier Automobiles main assembly plant in this area. The Dairy Development Department of the State Government, in order to cope-up with the increasing demand for milk, established a dairy at Nehru nagar, Kurla (East) in 1975.

Geographically, South Mumbai lies at the southern corner of Salsette Island. Most city residents use the term to refer to the stretch extending from Colaba to Mahim as South Mumbai . This delimitation is also known as Mumbai City or Island City. The area is delimited on the east by Mumbai harbour and on the west by the Arabian Sea. The areas from Bandra and beyond form a part of Suburban Mumbai. See also Mumbai City District.

This delimitation is also known as Mumbai City or Island City. The area is delimited on the east by Mumbai harbour and on the west by the Arabian Sea. The areas from Bandra and beyond form a part of Suburban Mumbai. See also Mumbai City District.

CEDRIC TIXIERA AND HIS WIFE JANE SING A SONG ABOUT EAST INDIAN CULTURE AND ITS ORIGIN
The East Indians are the original residents of Bombay (Mumbai). These Original Inhabitants used to call Bombay in their dialect as Mobai and not Mumbai.
The Area constituting the villages of East Indian Community are the former seven islands of Bombay (given to the British as a dowry by the Portuguese in ), the former island of Salsette (ruled by the Portuguese, till the Marathas defeated them, and gifted this to the British), Thana, Bassein (Vasai), Chaul, and parts of Raigad.
1765 Bombay
(Using Internet Explorer : Please point you mouse over the names to get the translation )
Above is the Plan of Bombay and it's Vicinity (1703) which is a sea route map of the island of Bombay (consisting of seven smaller islands), the island of Salsette and the Island of the Jesuites (Jesuites is an order of Roman Catholic Priests), the Island of Caronja and the Island of Chaul.
The above map of Bombay and it's vacinity drawn in the year 1703, coincidently demarcates the entire region of the East Indian Community of Bombay. This is one of the innumerable proofs of Christianity existing and thriving in Bombay and it's surroundings from the earliest of times.
There are many ancient writings quoting people in the East Indies who live along the Canara Coast, who have the knowledge of Christ and its teachings. The importance of this website is the information that the aborigines of the metropolitian Bombay, comes from humble and hardworking people who solely because of their faith have been sidelined in the development of Bombay. It is being done in such a way that all traces of the East Indian Community and their villages are being wiped out, surely but steadily. It always is in the guise of Development.
Proofs of Apathy and Persecution :
Airport land of Bombay (Sahar) not being returned to the East Indians, despite a written promise of the British to use this only for the 2nd World War and latr return this with damages, if any. This has not yet been returned, on the contrary, the current expansion plan (2009) is to wipe away the surrounding villages and destroy a century old Church.
Dispersing the entire population of East Indians in Manori, Gorai and Uttan by making a fertile cultivating land as a SEZ (Special Economic zone). The East Indians have made many protests and petitions, but are being disgarded. While most do not get permission to build citing CRZ (Costal Regularized Zone), the Judicial College was allowed to be constructed (2009). Similarly a huge Pagoda for Vipassana has been built flouting CRZ rules and was built by destroying mangroves. As if these are not enough, a dumping ground dsposal has been setup at Uttan, creating fould stench and is a major health hazzard.
The name of Bombay was deemed to be changed to Mumbai, because of so-called demand of the local people. The local People (the East Indians) use to called the island of Bombay,....Mobai. This too was not for the whole of Bombay but to that specific Island.
FSI: The various govenments and governemnt machinery have given extra FSI to slum dwellers, who in fact are illegal and encroachers. Most slums development get FSI of 4, so Hotel developments have been given FSI of 7. The original People of Bombay, the East Indians living in Gaothan are given an FSI of only 1.5. The rampant and arrogant misuse of liberal FSI has created a corrupt BMC, who do not take care of the pressure on infrastructure.
BMC permissions are based on new housing, where constructions should leave space around the property and should be road touched...etc. However, the gaothans being villages were not planned based on this new housing policies, these gaothan houses have been here for centuries, however, no law is being made to ensure that there is a parity for these gaothans to self sustain and survive in their own city.

Amazing Mumbadevi - The Most Populous City Part III - Mumbai (/mʊmˈbaɪ/; also known as Bombay) is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India, second most populous metropolitan area in India, and the fifth most populous city in the world, with an estimated city population of 18.4 million and metropolitan area population of 20.7 million as of 2011.[6] Along with the urban areas, including the cities of Navi Mumbai, Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, it is one of the most populous urban regions in the world.[7] Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbour. In 2009, Mumbai was named an alpha world city.
The name Mumbai is derived from Mumba or Maha-Amba—the name of the Koli goddess Mumbadevi—and Aai, "mother" in the language of Marathi, the mother tongue of the Kolis and the official language of Maharashtra.
Mumbai is built on what was once an archipelago of seven islands: Bombay Island, Parel, Mazagaon, Mahim, Colaba, Worli, and Old Woman's Island (also known as Little Colaba).[37] It is not exactly known when these islands were first inhabited. Pleistocene sediments found along the coastal areas around Kandivali in northern Mumbai suggest that the islands were inhabited since the Stone Age.[38] Perhaps at the beginning of the Common era (2,000 years ago), or possibly earlier, they came to be occupied by the Koli fishing community.
