Guadeloupe / Gwadloup is an archipelago located in the eastern Caribbean Sea, with a land area of 1,628 square kilometres (629 sq. mi).It is an overseas region of France, consisting of a single overseas department. As with the other overseas departments, Guadeloupe is also one of the twenty-six regions of France (being an overseas region) and an integral part of the Republic since 2007.As part of France, Guadeloupe is part of the European Union; hence, as for most EU countries, its currency is the euro. However, Guadeloupe does not fall under the Schengen Agreement. The prefecture of Guadeloupe is Basse-Terre. Christopher Colombus named the island Santa María de Guadalupe in 1493 after the Virgin Mary, venerated in the Spanish town of Guadalupe, in Extremadura.Today the population of Guadeloupe is mainly of African or mixed descent and largely Roman Catholic. French and a Creole patois with an important European and Indian active population. There are also Lebanese, Syrians, Chinese and others.
On 15 July 2007 the island communes of Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy were officially detached from Guadeloupe and became two separate French overseas collectivities with their own local administration, henceforth separated from Guadeloupe. Their combined population was 35,930 and their combined land area was 74.2 km2 (29 sq mi) at the 1999 census. Guadeloupe thereby lost 8.5 percent of its population and 4.36 percent of its land area, based upon numbers from that census. On 20 January 2009, an umbrella group of approximately fifty labour union and other associations known in the local Antillean Creole as the Liyannaj Kont Pwofitasyon (LKP) led by Élie Domota called for a 200 Euro ($260 USD) monthly pay increase for the island's low income workers. The protesters have proposed that authorities "lower business taxes as a top up to company finances" to pay for the 200 Euro pay raises. Employers and business leaders in Guadeloupe have said that they cannot afford the salary increase.

This is a list of the "mammal species recorded in France". There are 120 mammal species in France, of which 1 is critically endangered, 2 are endangered, 13 are vulnerable, and 4 are near-threatened. 1 of the species listed for France is considered to be extinct.
The following tags are used to highlight each species' conservation status as assessed by the IUCN:
Some species were assessed using an earlier set of criteria. Species assessed using this system have the following instead of Near Threatened and Least Concern categories:
----
Rodents make up the largest order of mammals, with over 40 percent of mammalian species. They have two incisors in the upper and lower jaw which grow continually and must be keep short by gnawing. Most rodents are small though the capybara can weigh up to 45 kg .
----
The lagomorphs comprise two families, Leporidae , and Ochotonidae . Though they can resemble rodents, and were classified as a superfamily in that order until the early 20th century, they have since been considered a separate order. They differ from rodents in a number of physical characteristics, such as having four incisors in the upper jaw rather than two.

Air France (formally Société Air France, S.A.), stylised as AIRFRANCE, is the French flag carrier headquartered in Tremblay-en-France, (north of Paris). It is a subsidiary of the Air France-KLM Group and a founding member of the SkyTeam global airline alliance. As of 2013 Air France serves 36 destinations in France and operates worldwide scheduled passenger and cargo services to 168 destinations in 93 countries (including Overseas departments and territories of France) and also carried 59,513,000 passengers in 2011. The airline's global hub is at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, with Paris Orly Airport, Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport, Marseille Provence Airport, Toulouse Blagnac Airport, and Nice Côte d'Azur Airport serving as secondary hubs. Air France's corporate headquarters, previously in Montparnasse, Paris, are located on the grounds of Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, north of Paris.
Air France was formed on 7 October 1933 from a merger of Air Orient, Air Union, Compagnie Générale Aéropostale, Compagnie Internationale de Navigation Aérienne (CIDNA), and Société Générale de Transport Aérien (SGTA).
During the Cold War, from 1950 until 1990, Air France was one of the three main Allied scheduled airlines operating in Germany at West Berlin's Tempelhof and Tegel airports.
In 1990, Air France acquired the operations of French domestic carrier Air Inter and international rival UTA – Union de Transports Aériens.
Air France served as France's primary national flag carrier for seven decades prior to its 2003 merger with KLM.
Between April 2001 and March 2002, the airline carried 43.3 million passengers and had a total revenue of €12.53bn. In November 2004, Air France ranked as the largest European airline with 25.5% total market share, and was the largest airline in the world in terms of operating revenue.
Air France operates a mixed fleet of Airbus and Boeing widebody jets on long-haul routes, and uses Airbus A320 family aircraft on short-haul routes. Air France introduced the A380 on 20 November 2009 with service to New York's JFK Airport from Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport. The carrier's regional airline subsidiary, HOP!, operates the majority of its regional domestic and European scheduled services with a fleet of regional jet aircraft.
The Airbus A321 is a stretched first derivative of the standard A320. The variant was launched in 1988,] when the A320 began operations. Compared with the A320, the A321's major change is the stretched fuselage, which is lengthened by 6.94 metres (22 ft 9 in); the A321 is the largest of the A320 family. This is achieved by adding a 4.27 m (14 ft 0 in) front plug immediately forward of wing, and a 2.67 m (8 ft 9 in) rear plug. To maintain performance, double-slotted flaps were included, in addition to increasing the wing area by 4 m2 (43 sq ft), to 128 m2 (1,380 sq ft). Other minor modifications were made to accommodate the A321-100's 9,600 kg (21,200 lb) increase in maximum takeoff weight to 83,000 kg (183,000 lb). The maiden flight of the first of two prototypes came on 11 March 1993. The A321-100 entered service in 1994.
The basic A321-100 features a reduction in range compared to the A320 as extra fuel tankage was not added to the initial design to compensate for the extra weight. To overcome this Airbus launched the heavier and longer range A321-200 development in 1995 which has a full-passenger transcontinental US range. This is achieved through higher thrust engines (V2533-A5 or CFM56-5B3), minor structural strengthening, and an increase in fuel capacity with the installation of one or two optional 2,990 L (790 US gal) tanks in the rear underfloor hold. The additional fuel tankage increases the total fuel capacity of this model to 30,030 L (7,930 US gal). These modifications also increased the maximum takeoff weight of the A321-200 to 93,000 kg (205,000 lb). This variant first flew in December 1996. Its direct competitors include the Boeing 757-200 and the 737-900/900ER.
Airbus announced the development of a longer range version named A321neoLR that will be available in 2019. It is positioned to replace the Boeing 757-200 in transatlantic and similar markets where the range and payload of the 737-900 is insufficient to replace the 757-200. The new A321LR will have 206 seats; Business Class will offer 16 seats with 36" pitch and Economy will offer 190 seats at a 30-inch pitch. Airbus claims the maximum range at full payload of 4,000 nautical miles will exceed the range of Boeing's winglet-equipped 757-200W, but will burn less fuel per passenger. The A321LR will be equipped with three auxiliary fuel tanks including one at centerline. Boeing has not decided how it will replace the 757, but is not working on a "757 MAX", or a longer range 737-9 MAX.

France is divided into 27 administrative regions, 22 of which are in Metropolitan France, and five of which are overseas. Corsica is a territorial collectivity (French collectivité territoriale), but is considered a region in mainstream usage, and is even shown as such on the INSEE website. Each mainland region and Corsica are further subdivided into departments, ranging in number from 2 to 8 per region for the metropolitan ones whereas the overseas regions technically consist of only one department each. The term region was officially created by the Law of Decentralization (2 March 1982), which also gave regions their legal status. The first direct elections for regional representatives took place on 16 March 1986.

Created by Air France in the 1950s, "Flight to Immortal Rome" was directed by the talented Andre de la Varre. The film features a flight to Rome on a Lockheed Constellation (seen at the 5:40 minute mark) and a tour of the ancient and modern city. Some of the sights include the Castle of St. Angelo, Roman Coliseum, Arch of Constantine, the Forum, St. Peter's, the Vatican, Capitoline Hill, the Pantheon, and much more.
André de la Varre (1904-1987) was a leading travelogue filmmaker who started as a 17-year old visiting Europe with a recently acquired movie camera at the end of World War I. By 1924, he was working with filmmaker Burton Holmes and eventually struck out on his own as an independent producer with a short film series called “Screen Traveler” in the thirties. Columbia Pictures commissioned him to provide material for a number of their own documentary shorts starting in 1939, recycling some footage he shot earlier in France as well as new material scouted mostly in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean on account of the war in Europe. He returned to Burton Holmes Inc. shortly before the founder’s passing in 1958 and was soon busy with lengthy features like 1965’s Grand Tour of London and Paris (by Day and by Night). Collaborating on many of these was his son André De La Varre Jr.
Despite financial problems with the Burton Holmes company and a shrinking market for travelogues, he still managed another well-received 90 minute feature These States for the Bicentennial Council in 1975. His later years were spent in Austria.

I would like to introduce to you this beautiful country, France, a country that has given so much to the world and still has a lot to offer. It shouldn't come as a coincidence to you that France is my country of birth and I am myself a Frenchman who just happens to love and value the land of Liberty, Equality, Fraternity(Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité in French). France has a population of of 67 million people, comprising territory in western Europe and several overseas regions and territories. The European part of France is also known as the Metropolitan France, whose population is about 64 million people.
Paris is the administrative, political and financial capital of France and it is also the largest city in the country. There are also other cities like: Lyon, Marseilles, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Montpelier, Strasbourg, Cannes, Calais, Lille, Rennes etc.The Constitution of France establishes the state as secular and democratic, with its sovereignty derived from the people. The French citizens enjoy a high standard of living, and the country performs well in international rankings of education, health care, life expectancy, civil liberties, and human development.France is both a founding member of the UN, NATO and the EU and plays a big role in international foreign policy. France is a country full of conspicuous places. These places not only content the passion of a traveler, but also create an aspiration to live in France.Different events throughout the ancient period, middle ages, and towards the modern era have shaped France into a dynamic and ever evolving congregation of people.
France is divided into 27 administrative regions (French: régions administratives), 22 of which are in Metropolitan France and five of which are overseas regions. Corsica is a territorial collectivity (French collectivité territoriale), but is considered a region in mainstream usage, and is even shown as such on the INSEE website. The mainland regions and Corsica are each further subdivided into departments, ranging in number from 2 to 8 per region for the metropolitan regions; the overseas regions technically consist of only one department each.
France has the world's sixth-largest economy by nominal figures and the ninth largest economy by PPP figures. It has the third-largest economy in Europe with Germany and the UK in 1st and 2nd.The OECD is headquartered in Paris, the nation's financial capital. The chemical industry is a key sector for France, helping to develop other manufacturing activities and contributing to economic growth.France's tourism industry is a major component of the economy, as France is the most visited destination in the world. We has recorded 84.7 million visitors to our country last year, a figure so staggeringly high that nowhere else even comes close. No other nation surpassed the 70 million mark, with the US in second place (69.8 million), and plucky Britain in eighth place, with 31.2 million people heading to our shores – not that much more than a third of the total going to France.

Travel video about destination France.
France is a country with a long and dramatic history. A country of unique flair and picturesque old towns, fortresses and castles and also a country of beautiful landscapes.Today Paris is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. First established by the Celts, next used strategically by the Romans and then the domain of the Sun King. Paris is not a city but a feeling of joie de vivre! Les Champs Elysees is the French metropolis’ magnificent avenue and surely one of the most beautiful in the world, with wide boulevards, shady corners and large volumes of traffic. For more than a century the members of the French court languished in Versailles where incredible pageantry and opulence dominated and the king celebrated in majestic style. A hundred hectares of ingenious garden design with a strict symmetry of wide star-shaped garden paths that seem to be without end. With its historic buildings, the eighty metre high granite mound of Le Mont-Saint-Michel is like something from a fairy tale. Due to its unique location and architectural splendour this picturesque village is often referred to as the Wonder Of The Occident. The Emerald Coast is a world of foaming white surf and dramatic cliffs. Saint Malo is the proud and solemn “Town Of Corsairs” as the yacht harbour of today once contained pirate ships. The historic centre of Nice, Vielle Ville, has maintained its charm and boasts the most well displayed fish market on the whole Cote D`Azur and a fruit and flower market that each day offers fresh produce and satisfies all the requirements of its most demanding customers. This is a journey to many corners of France - a fascinating journey not to be missed!

Paris is the capital and largest city of France. It is situated on the river Seine, in northern France, at the heart of the Ile-de-France region.
The most important places to visit in Paris are: Place de la Concorde (the largest square in Paris, it has a 3000 year old Egyptian obelisk and is particularly beautiful at night), Pompidou Center (a colorfully creative modern building housing a vast collection of modern art), Arc de Triomphe (built in the early 1800s by Napoleon, the Arc is a symbol of national pride. At the top, you'll find fantastic views of Paris), Versailles Palace (a royal château just outside of Paris has grand architecture, 700 rooms and beautiful gardens), Notre Dame (one of the most recognized symbols in the world and over 750 years old, Notre Dame has incredibly detailed Gothic architecture), Sacré-Coeur (this Byzantine style stunning light church, despised by intellectuals when it was built, is a must see for Paris visitors), Louvre Museum (perhaps the world's most famous museum, it hosts thousands of pieces of great art, including Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lise), Eiffel Tower (amongst the most recognizable and visited monuments in the world, everyone must experience the Eiffel Tower in their lifetime).
If you want to save time and money, the most important Paris travel tip is to compare prices before booking a hotel room or a flight. You can do this for free on http://bookinghunter.com, a site that searches through hundreds of other travel websites in real time for the best travel deals available.

50 Things to do in Paris, France | Top Attractions Travel Guide Travel Video Transcript:
Hello, and welcome to Paris. This week we are exploring the city of love, city of lights and city of art. This video will be showing you the top 50 things to do while you visit Paris.
So we're wrapping things up here. What would be your one tip for visiting Paris? Well, I have recently spent a whole ten days here in summer. I would say that if you really want to visit the art galleries, the museums and all of the main attractions you should probably avoid summer and like either come in the spring or the fall or even winter. Because the lines are insane and sometimes you have to wait like an hour and a half or two hours just to go inside a museum or go inside a church. And you just kill a lot of time. So that is my one tip. Try and avoid summer when the crowds are just everywhere and it is also a bit too hot in my opinion. But that is just me.
So how about you? What are your final thoughts on Paris? So my finals thoughts is obviously Paris is one of the top cities in the world in terms of attractions. But it is like any other big gritty city. And you have to come with realistic expectations. There is going to be garbage, there is going to be lines, there is going to be some areas that are a bit of an eyesore. But there is also a lot of beauty and there is also a lot to do here. So I highly you recommend coming but just don't have Paris on such a high pedestal that you're going to be disappointed.
And that concludes our guide of the top 50 things to do and see in Paris. We hope you enjoyed watching, and let us know if there are other places you would add to this list.
This is part of our Travel in France series. We're making a series of videos showcasing French culture, French arts, French foods, French religion, French cuisine and French people.

Take a tour of France's Most Beautiful Villages -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
I'd like to show you the Most Beautiful Villages of France:
Embodying France's natural ethereal beauty is the village of Gordes. Engulfed by luxuriant countryside and green hills, it has been deemed one of ''The most beautiful villages of France''. Enshrouded by houses made of stone and terracotta roof tiles, the village exudes warmth and rustic charm.
Overlooking a river gorge, the magnificent town of Rocamadour is built into a nearly sheer cliff face. A historical site of pilgrimage and a place of holy relics, Rocamadour is lit with medieval history. Famous for its monastic buildings and gorgeous churches, the village is among the most sought after French destinations.
The French village of Honfleur has earned a reputation as an artist's town over time. Its timber framed houses adorned with gray facades and cafe terraces endow it with a marked essence of uniqueness. Lovely harbor views coupled with great architecture and weather makes it a beautiful and ethereal holiday destination.
La Roque-Gageac is an amiable village enveloped in the serene waters of the
Dordogne. Compelling town sites include its riverside houses, narrow alleys, and manicured gardens all of which are absolutely delightful. A fortified village in the medieval era, it is beset with archaic manors and enthralling cliffs.
Eguisheim is a quaint village close to the German border. The characteristic narrow, cobble-stoned streets and alleyways strengthen Equisheim's stature as a resplendent medieval town. Due to its proximity to the German lands, a resolute German influence is evident in its language, architecture, and culture.

Paris, the capital of France, attracts 42 million visitors a year.
You can start your Paris tour on the metro, on foot, or with a taxi or bicycle; the city is easily navigable on all fronts. Visit the Arc de Triomphe in the center of the city and marvel at its graceful lines and commanding presence. Built between 1806 and 1836, the Arc is one of a number of historical arches and landmarks peppering Paris.
If your Paris sightseeing includes purchasing souvenirs, head to the Champs-Élysées, home of boutique shopping, numerous restaurants, and many bars, along with a theatre and other entertaining venues. Learn about culture and creativity at the Louvre, a 14th-century palace turned art museum, and check in on the Mona Lisa and her mysterious smile. Notre Dame Cathedral cannot be missed, as this imposing Gothic structure has stood since 1345.
Speaking of imposing, the Eiffel Tower is most frequently used to represent Paris. Stroll beneath it to get a good idea of its height, or travel to the top for a stunning view of the City of Light.

When you plan a trip to Nice, France, you’re in good company: This city has been a tourist destination since at least the 18th century. The European aristocracy often spent their winters in the pleasant climate, with a sunset walk on the shoreline being the highlight of each day.
You can walk in their footsteps—literally—with a stroll down the Promenade des Anglais, which roughly translates to Walkway of the English. On a tour of Nice, you’ll enjoy the mixture of French and Italian culture that permeates the city’s architecture, public art, and yes, the food. Bon appetit!
The residents of Nice love the outdoors, and you will, too, as you explore the Place Massena—the city’s main square, where you can enjoy a snack at a café or do some shopping in its many boutiques. Any Nice sightseeing requires exploration of one of the many open-air markets, where you can pick up fresh produce, local artwork, and French pastries that will leave you wondering why you waited so long to visit.
Cap a perfect day in Nice with a dip in the ocean and a walk along the seashore, watching the sun disappear into the sea.
What are you going to eat while in Nice?

Travel video about destination Nice in France.
Nice is the Côte d'Azur's fascinating and colorful city located on the curve of Angel Bay, a metropolis that has lost little of its turn of the century charm. It is also a place of contrast with all the pulsating life of an international city mixed with the rich Mediterranean flair of the south.
The magnificent Promenade Des Anglais was named after the resort's former large contingent of English visitors and was built during the 19th century.
The historical centre of the city, Vielle Ville, has become the home of Arabian immigrants, thus couscous features prominently on the menu. The old fish market is the most beautiful on the entire Côte d'Azur and its traditional displays of seafood are a feast to the eye.
The Russian Tsars also spent much time in Nice and around 1900, a Russian Orthodox Church was built. With its six eye-catching onion-shaped domes, it was designed by the Russian architect, Preobrajensky, and is the most beautiful example of its kind in the western hemisphere. The foundations of the building were designed in the shape of a Greek crucifix and the interior features a remarkable collection of Russian icons.
A good way to visit numerous places of interest is by taking a journey on a small sightseeing train known as the Azur Express.
Just outside Nice, there are some remarkable Roman ruins and a villa on the excavated site contains the Matisse Museum that features each of the famous artist's sculptures.
Nice is more than 'nice' -- joie de vivre never had it so good!

Travel video about destination Paris in France.
Paris is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. First established by the Celts, next used strategically by the Romans, then it served the extravagant lifestyle of the Sun King, Louis XIV until it became a hotbed of Revolution.
Champs-Élysée is surely one of the most beautiful avenues in the world. It has wide boulevards, shady corners, ambient street cafes and classic Parisian buildings that are decorated with flowers.
Since 1873, the Palais de l'Élysée has been the residence of the French President. At the beginning of the 17th century, Madame de Pompadour lived there and during the Revolution the liberated people cavorted in its luxurious rooms.
Through a small triumphal arch decorated with scenes of Napoleon's victorious army, there is the garden created by Leotre, the Jardin des Tuileries. A bridge and fountain are the focal points of this popular park, created in typical French style.
A modern glass pyramid and a fountain decorate the courtyard of the former Louvre Palace, which since the time of the Revolution has been transformed into a museum that contains the famous Louvre art gallery. Its collection of remarkable historic treasures and superb art collection make it one of the world's most famous museums with Leonardo Da Vinci´s masterpiece, the Mona Lisa, taking pride of place.
Situated on a small island on the River Seine is the Cathedral of Notre Dame, the 'Mother Church of the Nation'. Built on the foundations of a Roman temple and commissioned by the bishops Maurice and Eudes de Sully, it took almost 200 years to build this Gothic masterpiece.
Built at the end of the 19th century as a symbol of national revival, Montmartre's Sacre Coeur has the appearance of a white, fairy-tale palace with 237 steps that lead up to the main entrance of this extraordinary structure. Its Byzantine architecture and five cupolas are reminiscent of the Marcus Dome in Venice.
Of course, there are the dizzy heights of the Eiffel Tower and a great deal more. Paris is a wonderful festival of the senses!

Travel video about destination Provence.
Marseille is the oldest city in France, the country’s largest commercial harbour and the capital of Provence, an enchanting region full of contrast. The most impressive religious building in Marseille is a fortified monastery church that dates back to the fifth century, the mighty Abbaye Saint Victor. Deep down in the rock is an Early Christian crypt and a number of stone sarcophaguses that contain the remains of various holy martyrs that date back to the Roman persecution of the Christians. Aix-En-Provence, along with its numerous lanes, is one of the most beautiful cities in France. More than forty spectacular fountains help to cool down this ancient town in the hot months of summer when both foreign and French tourists visit the city. ‘Sur Le Pont D’Avignon’ are the words of the world famous French song that is familiar to both young and old alike. It is a song of dance on the bridge of the Pont Saint Bénézet but it is more likely that the people here once danced under the bridge as that is the location of its bars! For almost two thousand years an imposing Roman amphitheatre has dominated the city of Nîmes. It is the capital of the Departement Gard that is situated on the periphery of Provence. One of the most well preserved mediaeval fortifications in Europe surrounds the small town of Aigues-Mortes along the western periphery of the Camargue in the south of France. The town was established in 1240. From the city wall that is eleven metres high and six metres thick, there is a wonderful view across the rooftops of the impregnable city. With historic towns in which both the Romans and the Papacy felt at home, and with blossoming fields of lavender and ancient mountain villages, Provence is a land of sweet aromas and radiant light.

One of the most beautiful medium sized cities in the world, Nice has something for everyone.
And should you get bored, just a short train trip away you can also visit Monte Carlo (Monaco). The beaches are crystal blue and the city looks like a carbon copy of Paris (on a smaller scale). Actually we like Nice much more than Paris. Monaco, meh... we are not too sure yet. It may take another couple of trips.

Created in 1968 by the Bermuda Department of Tourism, "Bermuda the Island Nobody Wanted" describes how Bermuda became one of the most popular resorts, and presents a historical review based on comments by Mark Twain.
The film was made by F.D. Kay and I.L. Kay and their zoom lens, and written by Don Frifield with help from Mark Twain and was narrated by actor Michael Tolan with Tom Noel as Twain.
Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory in the North Atlantic Ocean, located off the east coast of North America. Its nearest landmass is Cape Hatteras, United States, about 1,030 kilometres (640 mi) to the west-northwest. It is about 1,239 kilometres (770 mi) south of Cape Sable Island, Canada, and 1,538 kilometres (956 mi) north of Puerto Rico. Its capital city is Hamilton.
The first known European explorer to reach Bermuda was Spanish sea captain Juan de Bermúdez in 1503, after whom the islands are named. He claimed the apparently uninhabited islands for the Spanish Empire. Although he paid two visits to the archipelago, Bermúdez never landed on the islands, because he did not want to risk crossing over the dangerous reef surrounding them. Subsequent Spanish or other European parties are believed to have released pigs there, which had become feral and abundant on the island by the time European settlement began. In 1609, the English Virginia Company, which had established Virginia and Jamestown on the North American continent two years earlier, established a settlement. It was founded in the aftermath of a hurricane, when the crew of the sinking Sea Venture steered the ship onto the reef so they could get ashore.
The island was administered as an extension of Virginia by the Company until 1614, when its successor, the Somers Isles Company, took over and managed it until 1684. At that time, the company's charter was revoked, and the English Crown took over administration. The islands became a British colony following the 1707 unification of the parliaments of Scotland and England, which created the Kingdom of Great Britain. After 1949, when Newfoundland became part of Canada, Bermuda was automatically ranked as the oldest remaining British Overseas Territory. Since the return of Hong Kong to China in 1997, it is the most populous Territory. Its first capital, St. George's, was established in 1612 and is the oldest continuously inhabited English town in the New World.
Bermuda's economy is based on offshore insurance and reinsurance, and tourism, the two largest economic sectors. Bermuda had one of the world's highest GDP per capita for most of the 20th century[citation needed] and several years beyond. Recently, its economic status has been affected by the global recession. It has a subtropical climate. Bermuda is the northernmost point of the Bermuda Triangle, a region of sea in which, according to legend, a number of aircraft and surface vessels have disappeared under supposedly unexplained or mysterious circumstances. The island is in the hurricane belt and prone to severe weather.

The French Navy, officially the Marine nationale ("National Navy") and casually called La Royale, is the maritime arm of the French military. Tracing its roots back to 1624 it is one of the world's oldest naval forces and historically played a key part in establishing the French colonial empire. Since 2008, its roles have been defined as maintaining intelligence, protecting populations, preventing crises, intervening wherever necessary to reestablish peace, and dissuading any threats against vital French interests. The Marine nationale consists of four branches, the Force d'Action Navale, the Forces Sous-marines, the Aeronavale and the Fusiliers Marins (including Commandos de Marine). As a blue-water navy the Marine nationale operates a wide range of fighting vessels, including a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, nuclear-powered submarines, frigates, patrol boats and support ships. The French Navy does not use prefixes of the names of its ships (such as the Royal Navy uses HMS, for instance). Foreign commentators sometimes use the prefixes "FS" (for "French Ship") or FNS (for "French Navy Ship"); these are not official, however.
As of June 2014, the French Navy employs a total of 36,776 regular personnel. The reserve element of the French Navy consists of; 5,519 personnel of the Operational Reserve and 2,909 personnel of the Citizens Reserve.

Dr Adam M Tomison
A series of media reports of attacks on Indian students in 2009 led to growing concern over the safety of international students in Australia. In response to these concerns, the Australian Institute of Criminology sought to quantify the nature and extent to which Indian students were the victims of crime compared with other international student groups and the Australian population. Data for over 400,000 student visa holders from the five countries with the largest student populations living in Australia between 2005 and 2009—India, the People's Republic of China, Republic of Korea (South Korea), the United States and Malaysia -- was matched with crimes recorded in Australian state and territory police agencies' databases. The objective was to compare the student victimisation rates against Australian reference populations in each jurisdiction and against each of the five country samples for the three broad offence categories -- 'assaults' 'robberies' and 'other theft'. The findings of this study, its limitations and implications will be discussed in this presentation.

http://www.StockMarketFunding.com Stock Market Plunge Live Trading Stocks Fall 3%, Dow Down 360: U.S. Join World Sell-Off.
Stocks moved sharply lower at the start of trading on Thursday, extending the substantial downward move seen in the previous session. The major averages all slid firmly into negative territory, with the Dow dropping to its lowest intraday level in a month.
In the past few minutes, the major averages have seen some further downside, hitting new lows for the young session. The Dow is down 356.46 points or 3.2 percent at 10,768.38, the Nasdaq is down 76.15 points or 3 percent at 2,462.04 and the S&P; 500 is down 35.60 points or 3.1 percent at 1,131.16.
The initial weakness on Wall Street reflects renewed concerns about the global economic outlook following Wednesday's troubling commentary from the Federal Reserve as well as some disappointing economic data.
In its policy statement released yesterday, the Fed noted that economic growth remains slow and warned that there are significant downside risks to the economic outlook.
As part of its efforts to boost the sluggish economy, the central bank announced plans to replace short-term securities in its bond portfolio with longer-term securities. The Fed said the move should put downward pressure on longer-term interest rates.
However, economists were largely skeptical regarding the likely impact of the move, with Paul Ashworth, Chief U.S. Economist at Capital Economics, noting, "The cost of borrowing simply isn't the problem."
Disappointing Chinese manufacturing data has also generated some selling pressure along with a report showing a contraction in business activity in Europe.
Additionally, the U.S. Labor Department recently released a report showing that initial jobless claims decreased in the week ended September 17th but still came in above economist estimates.
The report said jobless claims fell to 423,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 432,000, while economists had been expecting claims to fall to 420,000 from the 428,000 originally reported for the previous week.
In corporate news, delivery giant FedEx (FDX) reported first quarter earnings that increased in line with analyst estimates but also lowered its full year earnings guidance.
With traders expressing concerns about the outlook for global demand, resource stocks are turning in some of the market's worst performances in early trading. Gold stocks are posting particularly steep losses amid a sharp drop by the price of the precious metal.
Technology stocks have also come under considerable selling pressure, with computer hardware, networking, and semiconductor stocks posting steep losses. Significant weakness is also visible among housing, transportation, and banking stocks.
Most of the other major sectors have also shown notable moves to the downside in early trading amid a broad based sell-off.
In overseas trading, stock markets across the Asia-Pacific region saw significant selling pressure following the overnight sell-off on Wall Street. Japan's Nikkei 225 Index tumbled by 2.1 percent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index plunged by 4.9 percent.
The major European markets are also showing substantial moves to the downside on the day. The French CAC 40 Index has plummeted by 5.1 percent, while the U.K.'s FTSE 100 Index and the German DAX Index are down by 4.4 percent and 3.9 percent, respectively.
In the bond market, treasuries have moved sharply higher amid the continued weakness on Wall Street. Subsequently, the yield on the benchmark ten-year note, which moves opposite of its price, is down by 9.9 basis points at 1.776 percent after hitting a record intraday low of 1.754 percent.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stars_and_Stripes_(newspaper)
Stars and Stripes is an American newspaper that reports on matters affecting the members of the United States Armed Forces. It operates from inside the Department of Defense, but is editorially separate from it, and its First Amendment protection is safeguarded by the United States Congress, to whom an independent ombudsman, who serves the readers' interests, regularly reports. As well as a website, Stars and Stripes publishes four daily print editions for the military service members serving overseas; these European, Mideast, Japan, and Korea editions are also available as free downloads in electronic format, and there are also seven digital editions. The newspaper has its headquarters in Washington, DC...
On November 9, 1861, during the American Civil War, soldiers of the 11th, 18th, and 29th Illinois Regiments set up camp in Bloomfield, Missouri. Finding the local newspaper's office empty, they decided to print a newspaper about their activities. They called it the Stars and Stripes. Today, the Stars & Stripes Museum - Library Association is located in Bloomfield...
During World War I, the staff. roving reporters, and illustrators of the Stars and Stripes were veteran reporter or young soldiers who would later become such in the post-war years. Harold Ross, editor of the Stars and Stripes, returned home to found The New Yorker magazine. Cyrus Baldridge, its art director and principal illustrator, became a major illustrator of books and magazines, as well as a writer, print maker and stage designer. Sports page editor Grantland Rice had a long career in journalism and founded a motion picture studio called Grantland Rice Sportlight. Drama critic Alexander Woollcott's essays for Stars and Stripes were collected in his book, The Command Is Forward (1919).
The Stars and Stripes was then an eight-page weekly which reached a peak of 526,000 readers, relying on the improvisational efforts of its staff to get it printed in France and distributed to U.S. troops...
During World War II, the newspaper was printed in dozens of editions in several operating theaters. Again, both newspapermen in uniform and young soldiers, some of whom would later become important journalists, filled the staffs and showed zeal and talent in publishing and delivering the paper on time. Some of the editions were assembled and printed very close to the front in order to get the latest information to the most troops. Also, during the war, the newspaper published the 53-book series G.I. Stories.
After Bill Mauldin did his popular "Willie and Joe" cartoons for the WWII Stars and Stripes, he returned home to a successful career as an editorial cartoonist and two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Former Stars and Stripes staffers also include 60 Minutes' Andy Rooney and Steve Kroft, songwriter and author Shel Silverstein, comic book illustrator Tom Sutton, author Ralph G. Martin, painter and cartoonist Paul Fontaine, author and television news correspondent Tony Zappone, cartoonist Vernon Grant (A Monster Is Loose in Tokyo), Hollywood photographer Phil Stern and the late stock market reporter and host of public television's Wall Street Week, Louis Rukeyser.
A photograph in Stars and Stripes loosely inspired the exploits of PFC Jack Agnew in the 1965 novel and the 1967 film, The Dirty Dozen.
The newspaper has been published continuously in Europe since 1942 and in the Pacific since 1945.
American comic strips have been presented in a 15-page section, Stripes' Sunday Comics...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aberdeen_Proving_Ground
Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) (sometimes erroneously called Aberdeen Proving Grounds) is a United States Army facility located in Aberdeen, Maryland (in Harford County)...
APG is the U.S. Army's oldest active proving ground, established on October 20, 1917, six months after the U.S. entered World War I. Its location allowed design and testing of ordnance materiel to take place near contemporary industrial and shipping centers. The proving ground was created as a successor to the Sandy Hook Proving Ground, which was too small for some of the larger weapons being tested. At the peak of World War II, APG had billeting space for 2,348 officers and 24,189 enlisted personnel.
Edgewood Arsenal
Although civilian contractors produced the major fraction of conventional munitions for World War I, the United States government built federally owned plants on Aberdeen Proving Ground for the manufacture of toxic gas. These poison gas manufacturing facilities came to be known as Edgewood Arsenal. Edgewood Arsenal included plants to manufacture mustard gas, chloropicrin and phosgene, and separate facilities to fill artillery shells with these chemicals. Production began in 1918, reached 2,756 tons per month, and totaled 10,817 tons of toxic gas manufactured at Edgewood Arsenal before the November 1918 armistice. Some of this gas was shipped overseas for use in French and British artillery shells.
The Edgewood area of Aberdeen Proving Ground is approximately 13,000 acres and includes Gunpowder Neck, Pooles Island, Carroll Island, and Graces Quarters. The Edgewood area was used for the development and testing of chemical agent munitions. From 1917 to the present, the Edgewood area conducted chemical research programs, manufactured chemical agents, and tested, stored, and disposed of toxic materials...
From 1955 to 1975, the U.S. Army Chemical Corps conducted classified medical studies at Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. The purpose was to evaluate the impact of low-dose chemical warfare agents on military personnel and to test protective clothing and pharmaceuticals. About 7,000 soldiers took part in these experiments that involved exposures to more than 250 different chemicals...
Other component locations within Aberdeen Proving Ground
Other parts of APG not attached to the main installation include the Churchville Test Area in Harford County, and the Carroll Island and Graces Quarters in Baltimore County, Maryland. The Churchville Test Area is a test track with hills that provide steep natural grades and tight turns to stress engines, drivetrains, and suspensions for army vehicles, including M1 Abrams tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, and Humvees.
The eastern half Carroll Island was used as a testing location for open air static testing of chemical weapons since the 1950s. During tests of chemical agents and other compounds at Carroll Island, Maryland, from July 1, 1964 to December 31, 1971 nearly 6-1/2 tons of chemicals were disseminated on the test area including 4,600 pounds of irritants, 655 pounds of anticholinesterase compounds such as the nerve gasses Sarin and VX, and 263 pounds of incapacitants such as LSD. Simulant agents, incendiaries, decontaminating compounds, signaling and screening smokes, mustard, and herbicides were also released as well as riot control gasses. The test sites consisted of spray grids, a wind tunnel, test grids, and small buildings...

The Churchville Test Area is a United States Army facility of the Aberdeen Proving Ground, located northeast of Bel Air, Maryland (in Harford county, Maryland, USA).
The Churchville Test Area (39.596°N 76.253°WCoordinates: 39.596°N 76.253°W) is a hilly set of cross-country road test tracks providing a variety of steep natural grades and tight turns designed to stress engines, drivetrains and suspension systems for Army vehicles, such as the M1 Abrams tanks, M2 Bradley fighting vehicle and the Humvee.
The Test Area consists of 11 miles (18 km) of interconnected roads and test courses located on 250 acres (1.0 km2), with both 3- and 4-mile (6.4 km) closed loop courses, mud, dust and gravel surfaces, and grades ranging from 7% to 29%...

In the wake of Syria’s civil war, the Islamic State (IS), also known as ISIS, has emerged as the new face of extremism and ethnic violence in the Middle East. IS has seized international attention and raised widespread fear with a series of videos showing the beheadings of Western hostages. But a great deal remains unknown about its operations and agenda. Join us at Roosevelt House as a panel of experts explores the origins of IS and its impact in the Middle East and examines what steps the U. S. and its allies must take to respond to its power and destabilizing influence in the region.
Participants include: Deborah Amos, Middle East correspondent, NPR, (moderator); Ambassador Maura Connelly, Director, Coalition to Counter ISIL, US State Department; David Patel, research fellow, Crown Center for Middle East Studies, Brandeis University; and Jillian Schwedler, Professor of Political Science, Hunter College.
