Our nuclear rights will be protected' after a blockbuster nuclear deal
Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said Friday a nuclear deal with world powers would open a "new page" for the country's international relations and lead to greater cooperation.
In a live televised address, Rouhani also said a final agreement would depend on both sides living up to their commitments.
"If the other side honours its promises, we will honour our promises," he said a day after Iran and the P5+1 group of nations led by the United States clinched a tentative framework for a nuclear deal.
"The world should know we are not about deceit and hypocrisy," he said, but noted: "If one day they want to choose a different path, that choice would also be open to us."
With a June 30 deadline and hard details about the lifting of sanctions standing in the way of a historic accord between Iran and the West, Rouhani sought to shore up support for the possible deal.
"In the framework that we have before us we can see that this government's approach was effective," he said, thanking supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei for his guidance in the nuclear talks.
Arguing that Iran wanted to improve its ties with all countries, Rouhani said: "With the countries that we have tensions or even hostility with, we seek the end of tensions and hostilities.
"And with countries with which we have cold relations we seek better relations.
"New cooperation with the world -- both in the nuclear sphere and other areas -- will open a new page."
Calling for "mutual respect, common interests and the reaching of shared goals", Rouhani said Iran wanted a "balanced agreement" on the nuclear issue.
"Some think we should either fight with the world or give in to the global powers," he said, calling instead for a "third way" of engaging internationally.
"We can cooperate with the world," he added

India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval arrived in Tehran on Tuesday for a number of meetings with Iranian officials.
Doval first met with Ali Shamkhani, the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council.
Their two delegations held talks on a comprehensive expansion of bilateral ties, and also discussed latest developments at regional and international levels.
Doval later met with the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
Iran and India have long had strong economic and trade ties but sanctions imposed by Western countries in recent years against Iran have somewhat curtailed the volume of these relations, especially in the oil sector.
India has been one of the main targets of US attempts to chip away at Iran's critical commercial lifelines across Asia.
India's imports of Iranian crude have been steadily declining since US and European sanctions came into effect and New Delhi has found alternative oil sources to make up for this reduction.
Energy-starved India imports around 75 percent of its oil to power its economic growth.

After marathon negotiations lasting two years, Iran and six world powers signed a landmark nuclear agreement in Vienna last month. However, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said recently that the fate of the historic nuclear deal with world powers is still unclear as lawmakers in both Iran and the United States must review it. What changes have and will the nuclear deal bring to Iran and the West? Will the deal reshape the Middle East and what will happen next? To discuss all these issues, we're honored to be joined by H. E. Mr. Ali Akbar Salehi, Vice President of Iran.

Speaking with NPR's Steve Inskeep, President Obama argued that the Iran nuclear deal "cuts off all pathways for Iran getting a nuclear weapon" and offers "an entire infrastructure that's built to keep track of what Iran's doing." About the likelihood that a Republican-controlled Congress will reject the deal, the president said that such a move reflects the opposition of "a near unanimous portion of Republican representatives" to "anything I do.” But he offered that once the agreement is implemented, that opposition will “probably be forgotten.”

He defended it even though the details have yet to be agreed upon. And he pushed back on critics, saying Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was making a “fundamental misjudgment,” and advising presidential contender Scott Walker to take “some time to bone up on foreign policy.”

Iran's Supreme Leader has conditionally approved the nuclear deal signed between his country and six world powers in July.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's official website carries a letter from the Supreme Leader to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani endorsing the deal, subject to certain conditions.
The nuclear deal will be rendered void if any future sanctions are imposed on Iran by any country, or under any pretext -- including "human rights" and "alleged support of terrorism," according to the letter.
The letter lists a series of nine key conditions before saying, "The motion passed by the National Security Council ... adhering to the points mentioned, is approved."
Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted a statement confirming the letter.
"In his letter Ayatollah Khamenei warned against any breach of the deal by the other side. The Supreme Leader noted that any remarks by the other side that says the structure of the sanctions will remain unchanged or imposition of any sanctions on Iran at any level under any pretext would translate into the violation of the JCPOA," referring to the formal name of the deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
Iranian lawmakers passed a bill last week allowing the Iranian government to implement the agreement, the state-run news agency IRNA reported.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has issued an order that obliges the country’s Foreign Ministry and the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran to begin the implementation of the nuclear agreement reached with the P5+1 group.
The directive came after the Iranian parliament and the Guardian Council both approved a bill entitled Iranian Administration’s Reciprocal and Proportional Action in Implementing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The document sets out certain obligations that the administration must observe as it puts the JCPOA into effect. Iran and the P5+1 agreed on the document in the Austrian capital on July 14. Tehran also signed a roadmap with the International Atomic Energy Agency back then. The P5+1 group of countries and Iran will hold their first meeting on the implementation of the roadmap in Vienna on Monday.

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani says fighting terrorism requires avoiding double standards.
Rouhani said that some countries lack a serious will to fight terrorism. He added that certain countries should accept that terrorist groups are not a proper tool for the realization of their goals. The Iranian president made the remarks at a meeting with the visiting German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Tehran. Rouhani also said that Tehran and Berlin need to expand their relations following the implementation of the nuclear agreement between Iran and the P-five-plus-one group of countries. The German official, for his turn, expressed hope that the two countries will boost bilateral trade in the near future. Steinmeier has also held meetings with other Iranian officials including Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

In time it may be known as the handshake seen round' the world.
But the occasion between the US president and Iran's foreign minister shows how divided the public is in relation to these countries.
For the first time since Iran's revolution, an American president has clasped hands with an Iranian official.
On Monday Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran's top diplomat, greeted and shook hands with Barack Obama during the United Nations General Assembly.
Iran's news agency, Isna, declared their handshake marks the first occasion that an Islamic republic official had exchanged such greetings with a US president.
But not all are well with the gesture.
A statement issued by a group of Iranian students affiliated with a hard-line militia have chided Zarif for shaking hands with "the Great Satan."
A similar sentiment has also been posted to the social media account of an Iranian parliamentary member.

Chinese President Xi Meets Iranian Counterpart Rouhani, Eyes New Cooperation Opportunities

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Monday, both interested in bilateral cooperation following the conclusion of a comprehensive Iranian nuclear deal.
After the deal is implemented, Iran will face more opportunities for cooperation with other countries, Xi said, adding that the China-Iran relationship faces new development opportunities as well.
China attaches great importance to its relations with Iran, and the foundation of bilateral friendship and cooperation has grown stronger since the two countries established diplomatic ties more than 40 years ago, he added.
China, he said, stands ready to join hands with Iran to seize the opportunities presented by the nuclear deal and continue to advance bilateral ties and practical cooperation.
Xi suggested the two sides should elevate their bilateral ties, beef up inter-party, parliamentary, local and people-to-people exchanges, and deepen cooperation within such multilateral frameworks as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the United Nations.
China is willing to work with Iran to prioritize cooperation projects in infrastructure construction and inter-connectivity and expand cooperation in fields like railways, roads, steel-making, car-making, electricity, advanced technology and environmental protection, said Xi, adding that cooperation in energy and financial sectors should be given priority.
The Chinese president also said that China stands ready to join hands with Iran to give full play to their complementary advantages in the energy sector and carry out stable long-term cooperation.
He also suggested the two sides take practical measures to step up security cooperation.
For his part, Rouhani said Iran cherishes its friendly ties with China and under the new circumstances it is willing to work with China to advance their bilateral ties, maintain close high-level exchanges and deepen long-term strategic cooperation in such fields as economy, trade and energy.
Through the joint efforts of related parties, negotiations on the Iranian nuclear issue have made a major breakthrough, Rouhani said, adding that the deal accords with the common interests of all parties and provides opportunities for Iran to expand cooperation.
Iran, he said, is willing to work with other parties to ensure the implementation of the deal.
The Chinese president arrived in New York last Friday evening for a series of summits and meetings marking the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, following his first state visit to the United States.

The Iranian president says Tehran should be cautious about the attempts of great powers particularly the US, aimed at infiltrating into the country after the conclusion of nuclear talks.
Rouhani added that the Iranian nation needs to create the right situation in order to prevent such infiltrations. He also called for more robust national unity and solidarity and a stronger relation between the government and the nation in order to hinder such efforts. The Iranian president stressed that Tehran is determined to promote its ties with China, Russia and India after the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action agreed by Iran and the P5+1. Rouhani also defended the measures adopted by his administration to improve the situation in the country particularly in the field of economy.

AP and Bloomberg stories below, but i just gotta say the whackiest part is when he goes off about this so called 13 Imam who is supposed to appear, and he says that he will come back with Jesus Christ (the muslim one?). Quite bizarre and creepy coming from a seemingly intelligent, sharp and shrewd yet evil little man.
UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says he has a vision of a new world order that would be absent the "hegemony of arrogance."
Ahmadinejad, known for past fiery denunciations of the United States and Israel, cited what he termed the "continued threat by the uncivilized Zionists to resort to military action against our great nation is a clear example of this bitter reality."
His remarks Wednesday came as he addressed the U.N. General Assembly.
He did not reference Iran's nuclear program. The United States, Israel and Western nations claim Tehran is using what it insists is a peaceful nuclear program as cover for building a weapon.
Israel has threatened a military strike against Iranian nuclear installation. President Barack Obama insists time remains to solve the dispute through diplomacy.

Bloomberg- .Empty Seats at UN Signal Decline of World Body Hamstrung by Veto
While the familiar clashes among countries echo through the 193-member United Nations General Assembly hall this week, empty seats will bear mute testimony to the world body's waning significance.
Some of the most important leaders -- China's Hu Jintao, Russia's Vladimir Putin, Germany's Angela Merkel and Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan -- are skipping this year's annual meeting. U.S. President Barack Obama made only a brief appearance and didn't formally meet one-on-one with foreign officials.
The 67-year-old UN's influence has always been limited by the veto power of the five permanent members of the Security Council. Now, however, global technological, financial, environmental, social, religious and demographic forces are further curbing its ability to act and eroding its foundation in the 17th century concept of sovereign nation-states.
"The concept of a world of nation-states, which dates to the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648, and the idea that they have a monopoly on international relations and on the conduct of war, is no longer valid," said Max Manwaring, a professor at the Strategic Studies Institute of the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. "It's been replaced by non-state actors and proxies of states, and public opinion has become the primary center of gravity. Whatever you can do to manipulate people's views is fair game."
While governments try to preserve their independence, Islamist terrorist groups, Somali pirates and Mexican drug cartels, to name a few, have "made a mockery" of the notion that countries control their own borders, Manwaring said in an interview.
Obsolete Idea
Built to help nations defuse conflicts before they escalate to open warfare, the UN is ill-equipped to tackle such transnational challenges in an Internet age that can flash financial news and videos throughout the globe faster than the Security Council can muster a quorum, much less reach a consensus.
"At a time when anyone with a cell phone can spread offensive views around the world with the click of a button, the notion that we can control the flow of information is obsolete," Obama said during his speech yesterday to the General Assembly.
In this increasingly borderless environment, an anti-Islam video posted on YouTube has sparked a wave of deadly anti- Western protests across the Muslim world, and the self- immolation of a 26-year-old Tunisian fruit vendor triggered rebellions across the Middle East.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has ruled out foreign intervention in resolving the Syrian conflict.
Rouhani made the remark in a joint press conference with visiting Austrian President Heinz Fischer in Tehran. He stressed that Iran will negotiate with any country that can help in restoring peace and establishing democracy in Syria. Rouhani said the most important thing is the resolution of the conflict and the return of Syrian refugees to their homes. The Iranian president also hailed the friendly relations between Tehran and Vienna. For his part, President Fischer said the resolution of Iran's nuclear dispute has opened a new chapter in its relations with other world countries. He said the two sides are committed to expanding relations in all fields and have agreed to cooperate in fighting terrorism.
