Plot: A send-up of the bawdy life of Romantic composer/piano virtuoso Franz Liszt, with ubiquitous phallic imagery and a good portion of the film devoted to Liszt's "friendship" with fellow composer Richard Wagner. The film begins during the time when Franz would give piano performance to a crowd of shrieking teenage fans while maintaining affairs with his (multiple!) mistresses. He eventually seeks Princess Carolyne of St. Petersburg (at her invitation), elopes, and, after their marriage is forbidden by the Pope, he embraces the monastic life as an abbé.

Taglines: The erotic, exotic electrifying rock fantasy... It out-Tommy's TOMMY.
Quotes:
Cosima: I've polished your sword! What do you want it for, to kill the critics?::Liszt: Time kills critics, my dear.
Liszt: Piss off, Brahms!
Marie d'Agoult: Spare him, Francois! Don't cut off his... genius in it's prime!::Count d'Agoult: Oh, is that what you call it?
Richard Wagner: So you're the jid who only makes music on a cash register?::Felix Mendelsohn: Music, shmusic, it's a living, dear boy.
Liszt: I know it sounds improbable, Your Holiness, but I...::The Pope: But truth is stranger than fiction? We've kept going for two thousand years on that one.
Hans Von Buelow: No, Wagner! Stay in hell where you belong!
Princess Carolyn: You and the Tsar are just different sides of the same coin: false gods worshiped in different ways. Dress the Tsar as a peasant and you have a peasant. [searches for Liszt] Stop skulking behind that screen! [continues] Dress Liszt in a crinoline and what do you have? The same thing: a sham. Rather than walk naked through the world, he chooses to play the imposter. What do you say?::Liszt: Bollocks!::Princess Carolyn: "Bollocks"? I don't speak Hungarian.
Richard Wagner: The trouble with your friends, Liszt, is they're all bourgeois pigs.::Liszt: Oh, pigs if you please. But aristocratic pigs, not bourgeois.
Richard Wagner: Is it true that when Liszt was a kid he played Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata at a concert and the composer himself jumped up and kissed him?::Rossini: Certainly Beethoven kissed the boy. By that time he was as deaf as a post.
Richard Wagner: You are Robert Schumann?::Strauss: No no no. That's Schumann. I am Strauss.::Richard Wagner: Not Johann Strauss?::Strauss: [annoyed] No! Levi Strauss!

The instrumental forces alone demand that we step back and look at Hector Berlioz Grande Messe des Morts, Op. 5 {Requiem} a little differently than we might look at another composition -- even another large-scale, theatrical composition -- from the 1830s: in addition to the usual large orchestra and chorus, Berlioz calls for no fewer than 16 timpani and four extra brass choirs! When the French ministry of the interior commissioned a requiem mass from Berlioz in 1837 and decreed that the conservative conductor Francois-Antoine Habeneck would lead the first performance of the work on 5 December 1837, they could hardly have had such a thing in mind (nobody had yet ever even conceived of an instrumentation like that before, certainly not for indoor use); but Berlioz, through all his many ups and downs as a composer, was never one to suppress his fiery sense of the dramatic (as fiery as his bright red hair, so the stories go), and, in the end, even Habeneck -- who, according to a not impartial Berlioz, tried his best to ruin the Requiem's premiere (see trivia below) -- had to admire the spark of genius and the sheer spunk that it took to put that thing on paper. Today the Requiem is Berlioz's second-most famous work, behind the Symphony Fantastique, though, as one might imagine from its performance requirements, it is not his second-most frequent visitor to the concerthall (or the cathedral, as the case might be).
Berlioz's Grand Messe des morts, scored for orchestra, tenor soloist, and SSTTBB chorus plus the extra forces listed above, is in ten sections and runs in excess of an hour and a quarter. Not all of its music is massive (the extra forces explode onto the scene in the Tuba mirum portion of the Dies irae sequence in No. 2 and then disappear), and indeed much of it is quite intimate -- for example the slender No. 3 Quid sum miser, which immediately follows the outburst in No. 2, or the opening of No. 9 Sanctus, which features the solo tenor. And the Requiem ends in absolute tenderness, the Lamb of God (No. 10 Agnus Dei) having taken away the sins of the world and accepted the dead into a new world, of which we mortals can hear only vague echoes -- timpani strokes left over from the explosive Last Judgment {Dies Irae} held earlier in the mass, now distant and gentle.
Trivia:
- Berlioz revised the work twice in his life, first in 1852, making the final revisions in 1867, only two years before his death.
- Berlioz wrote later on in his career: "if I were threatened with the destruction of the whole body of my works save one, I should crave mercy for the Messe des Morts."
- In the first performance, according to Berlioz himself, Habeneck put down his baton during the dramatic Tuba mirum (part of the Dies Irae), and took a pinch of snuff. Berlioz rushed to the podium to conduct himself, saving the performance from disaster. The premiere was a complete success.

MARGUERITE (solo)
D’amour l’ardente flamme,
Consume mes beaux jours.
Ah! la paix de mon âme
A donc fui pour toujours!
Son départ, son absence
Sont pour moi le cercueil,
Et, loin de sa présence
Tout me paraît en deuil.
Alors ma pauvre tête
Se dérange bientôt,
Mon faible cœur s’arrête,
Puis se glace aussitôt.
Sa marche que j’admire,
Son port si gracieux,
Sa bouche au doux sourire,
Le charme de ses yeux,
Sa voix enchanteresse,
Dont il sait m’embraser,
De sa main la caresse,
Hélas! et son baiser,
D’une amoureuse flamme,
Consument mes beaux jours!
Ah! le paix de mon âme
A donc fui pour toujours!
Je suis à ma fenêtre,
Ou dehors, tout le jour,
C’est pour le voir paraître,
Ou hâter son retour.
Mon cœur bat et se presse
Dès qu’il le sent venir,
Au gré de ma tendresse
Puis-je le retenir!
Ô caresses de flamme!
Que je voudrais un jour
Voir s’exhaler mon âme
Dans ses baisers d’amour!

"Symphony Fantastique: Épisode de la vie d'un Artiste ... en cinq parties" (Fantastic Symphony: An Episode in the Life of an Artist, in Five Parts) Op. 14 written in 1830, is perhaps the most famous program symphony.
There are five movements, instead of the four movements that were conventional for symphonies at the time:
00:00 - I. Reveries: Largo - Passions: Allegro agitato e appassionato assai
13:12 - II. Un Bal (Valse): Allegro non troppo
19:04 - III. Scene aux Champs: Adagio
35:15 - IV. Marche au Supplice: Allegretto non troppo
39:20 - V. Songe d'une Nuit du Sabbat: Larghetto - Allegro
This is an important piece of the early Romantic period, and is popular with concert audiences worldwide. The first performance was at the Paris Conservatoire in December 1830. The work was repeatedly revived between 1831 and 1845 and subsequently became a favourite in Paris.
The symphony is a piece of program music that tells the story of "an artist gifted with a lively imagination" who has "poisoned himself with opium" in the "depths of despair" because of "hopeless love." Berlioz provided his own program notes for each movement of the work.
He prefaces these notes with the following instructions:
"The composer's intention has been to develop various episodes in the life of an artist, in so far as they lend themselves to musical treatment. As the work cannot rely on the assistance of speech, the plan of the instrumental drama needs to be set out in advance. The following programme must therefore be considered as the spoken text of an opera, which serves to introduce musical movements and to motivate their character and expression." (see http://www.hberlioz.com/Scores/fantas.htm for the full program notes)
Trivia:
- Leonard Bernstein described the symphony as the first musical expedition into psychedelia because of its hallucinatory and dream-like nature, and because history suggests Berlioz composed at least a portion of it under the influence of opium. According to Bernstein, "Berlioz tells it like it is. You take a trip, you wind up screaming at your own funeral."
- Berlioz fell in love with an Irish actress, Harriet Smithson, after attending a performance of Shakespeare's Hamlet with her in the role of Ophelia on 11 September 1827. He sent her numerous love letters, all of which went unanswered. When she left Paris they had still not met. He then wrote the symphony as a way to express his unrequited love. It premiered in Paris on 5 December 1830; Harriet was not present. She eventually heard the work in 1832 and realized his genius. The two finally met and were married on 3 October 1833. Their marriage became increasingly bitter, and eventually they separated after several years of unhappiness.
With this last anecdote of Goethean proportions, Berlioz consolidated himself & this composition in the eternal hall of great music from the Romantic period.
wn.com/Hector Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique
- Composer: Hector Berlioz (11 December 1803 -- 8 March 1869)
- Orchestra: New Philharmonia Orchestra
- Conductor: Leopold Stokowski
- Year of recording: 1968
The following programme must therefore be considered as the spoken text of an opera, which serves to introduce musical movements and to motivate their character and expression."
