Edgar Degas, born in Paris in 1834, was another founder of the new school of impressionism, though he disliked the term. He preferred to be called a realist. He went through rigorous academic training in hopes of being a painter of historical scenes, but by the time he reached his thirties, he changed directions and became a classical painter of modern life, in particular his racing scenes, his portraits, and his ballet dancers. He remained a bachelor, convinced that an artist must live alone, and his politics were less than wholesome, but his work survives. He died in 1917, at which time more than 150 sculptures were discovered in his studio. Music is Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake."

Edgar Degas (born Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas, 19 July 1834 -- 27 September 1917), was a French artist famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers. He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, although he rejected the term, and preferred to be called a realist. He was a superb draftsman, and particularly masterful in depicting movement, as can be seen in his renditions of dancers, racecourse subjects and female nudes. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and for their portrayal of human isolation.
At the beginning of his career, he wanted to be a history painter, a calling for which he was well prepared by his rigorous academic training and close study of classic art. In his early thirties, he changed course, and by bringing the traditional methods of a history painter to bear on contemporary subject matter, he became a classical painter of modern life.
Degas is often identified as an Impressionist, an understandable but insufficient description. Impressionism originated in the 1860s and 1870s and grew, in part, from the realism of such painters as Courbet and Corot. The Impressionists painted the realities of the world around them using bright, "dazzling" colors, concentrating primarily on the effects of light, and hoping to infuse their scenes with immediacy.
Degas's only showing of sculpture during his life took place in 1881 when he exhibited The Little Dancer of Fourteen Years, only shown again in 1920; the rest of the sculptural works remained private until a posthumous exhibition in 1918.
During his life, public reception of Degas's work ranged from admiration to contempt. As a promising artist in the conventional mode, Degas had a number of paintings accepted in the Salon between 1865 and 1870. These works received praise from Pierre Puvis de Chavannes and the critic, Jules-Antoine Castagnary. He soon joined forces with the Impressionists, however, and rejected the rigid rules, judgements, and elitism of the Salon—just as the Salon and general public initially rejected the experimentalism of the Impressionists.

"acknowledged as the master of drawing the human figure in motion. Degas worked in many mediums, preferring pastel to all others. He is perhaps best known for his paintings, drawings, and bronzes of ballerinas and of race horses.
The art of Degas reflects a concern for the psychology of movement and expression and the harmony of line and continuity of contour. These characteristics set Degas apart from the other impressionist painters, although he took part in all but one of the 8 impressionist exhibitions between 1874 and 1886. Degas was the son of a wealthy banker, and his aristocratic family background instilled into his early art a haughty yet sensitive quality of detachment."

Edgar Degas Exhibition at the Tel-Aviv Museum of Art
Opening Event.
Tel Aviv Museum of Art is hosting an exceptional exhibition: exceptional, first of all, since it is a presentation of the complete collection of bronze sculptures by the great French artist, Edgar Degas, assembled for a traveling exhibition throughout the world. It is no less exceptional due to the powerful emotions it evokes.
Horses, dancers, working women, everyday scenes are all worthy subjects of observation for this great Impressionist master; they are all potential vehicles with which to articulate his unique ability to capture movement and imprint it in matter. For us, the viewers, it is a golden opportunity to become closely acquainted with the dancers' strained exercises or the puffs of galloping horses.
This exhibition of Degas sculptures attests once again to Israel's deep connection with French artists. The Museum's permanent collection attests to it, and its temporary exhibitions are also a constant reminder of that bond.
Therefore, we would like to extend our gratitude to the Museum and its Director, Prof. Mordechai Omer, who has granted us yet another opportunity to celebrate France's long and precious cultural relationship with Israel. Artists, cultural institutions, collectors, and viewers alike will benefit from the exhibition. We are proud to contribute our part in offering this most pleasing of exhibits.

Edgar Degas Exhibition at the Tel-Aviv Museum of Art
The Mayer of the city of Tel-Aviv, Mr. Ron Choldai, at the opening event.
Edgar Degas (19 July 1834 -- 27 September 1917) was a French artist famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers. He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, although he rejected the term, and preferred to be called a realist. He was a superb draftsman, and particularly masterly in depicting movement, as can be seen in his renditions of dancers, racecourse subjects and female nudes. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and for their portrayal of human isolation.
Degas was one of my husbands favorite impressionists. I love the vibrancy, light, and exquisite delicacy in his imaginative work.

Edgar Degas (19 July 1834 27 September 1917), born Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas, was a French artist famous for his work in painting, sculpture, printmaking and drawing. He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism although he rejected the term, and preferred to be called a realist. A superb draughtsman, he is especially identified with the subject of the dance, and over half his works depict dancers. These display his mastery in the depiction of movement, as do his racecourse subjects and female nudes. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and depiction of human isolation.
Early in his career, his ambition was to be a history painter, a calling for which he was well prepared by his rigorous academic training and close study of classic art. In his early thirties, he changed course, and by bringing the traditional methods of a history painter to bear on contemporary subject matter, he became a classical painter of modern life.

The National Art Gallery, Sofia, Bulgaria. Opens September 2nd, 2010.
The exhibit, which includes Degas's famous "The Little Dancer, Aged Fourteen," presents a comp lete set of all 74 sculptures that Degas originally carved out of wax, clay and plastiline and which were later cast in bronze by his family. The exposition's stop in Sofia is the third after Athens last November and Tel Aviv in March.
Apart from the collection on display in Sofia, which is entirely owned by the M.T. Abraham Center for the Visu al Arts, only four museums in the world possess an almost complete set of Degas bronze sculptures, with only one or two of the 74 figures missing.
The Sculpture of Edgar Degas
Recent decades have seen a far-reaching change in the interpretation and appreciation of the work of Edgar Degas (1834-1917), one of the most important artists active in Paris in the second half of the 19th century. Previously deemed a sentimental artist, mostly immersed in the world of dance and the stage, he has recently been rediscovered as an artist of unusual intellectual power, who explored various aspects of the language of art which were well ahead of their time and foreign to his fellow artists.
His profound interest in capturing the "spirit of the time" while meticulously scrutinizing the everyday—concurrent with confrontation of the lessons learned from the great masters of the past—enabled him to formulate trailblazing insights pertaining to the visual arts as well as to the prevailing social and gender orders. This was observed by Degas' contemporary, critic Joris-Karl Huysmans, who wrote: "A painter of modern life was born, and a painter who derived from no one, who resembled no one else, who brought a totally new flavour to art, totally new procedures of execution.
Laundresses in their shops, dancers at rehearsal, café-concert singers, theatre interiors, race-horses, portraits, cotton-merchants in America, women getting out of their bath ... all these subjects, so diverse, have been treated by this artist who is reputed however never to have painted anything but dancers!" The current exhibition focuses exclusively on sculpture—one medium among many in which Degas expressed himself masterfully.
His body of sculptural work is divided into eight thematic units, each supplemented by a short introduction which indicates the close affinity between Degas' two- and three-dimensional work, based on the impression that Degas' sculpture complemented and enriched his painting, just as much as his painting made possible, perhaps even demanded, the sculptural practice.
Each unit also contains an example or two which may attest to Degas' great dependence on the art of the past, as he himself declared with typical modesty: "What I do is the result of reflection and study of the great masters; of inspiration, spontaneity, temperament I know nothing."
One may learn about Degas' struggles of observation and visual conceptualization from the artist's work process on the large-scale oil painting, Miss La La at the Cirque Fernando, which was preceded by a long sequence of preliminary sketches exploring the appearance of the mulatto acrobat and the structure of the circus, in pencil, pastel, and oil. The final painting was presented at the Fourth Impressionist Exhibition of 1879 (and is now kept at the National Gallery, London). It greatly impressed Huysmans, who wrote about it in 1880: "In order to give the exact sensation of the eye following Miss Lola (sic.), climbing by the strength of her tee th to the very top of the Cirque Fernando, Degas dared to make the circus roof lean wholly to one side."

The exhibition Edgar Degas -- The Late Work at Fondation Beyeler is the first show that is devoted exclusively to Edgar Degas (1834 - 1917) late work. It features more than 150 paintings, sculptures, drawings, pastels, prints, and photographs of the famous French artist, and explores in detail the richness of the artist's achievement in this phase of his career. After the last Impressionist exhibition in 1886, Edgar Degas turned his back on the art world, and began to fundamentally change his style. The principal subjects were ballet dancers and female nudes, jockeys and racehorses, landscapes and portraits, which he depicted in ever new variations and combinations.
Edgar Degas -- The Late Work at Fondation Beyeler is curated by Martin Schwander in collaboration with Michiko Kono. The exhibition runs until January 27, 2013.

Edgar Degas's Studies of Circus Performer, Miss Lala
Edgar Degas's dynamic paintings of nineteenth-century Parisian life resulted from his rigorous studio practice. Often for each finished canvas, he produced many preparatory sketches, both from direct observation and in the studio. Yet his final compositions appear fluid, as if they were made more spontaneously.
Narrated by curators Christine Giviskos and Lee Hendrix, this video explores how Dega

Born Edgar Hilaire Germain de Gas in Paris, France, he was the oldest of five children. Madame de Gas belonged to a French family that settled in America. Degas was fond of his mother and her death in 1847 was a deep personal tragedy for Degas. His father, a banker, encouraged his son's artistic inclination. He received a classical education at Lycee Louis-le-Grand from 1845 to 1852.
In 1852 he transformed a room from the family home into a studio and worked under Felix Joseph Barrias. He made copies of the old masters in the Louvre and studied the prints of Dürer, Mantegna, Rembrandt and Goya. In 1854 he studied with Louis Lamothe who was a disciple of Ingres for whom Degas would retain great respect. In 1855 Degas began study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, but found the course too unprofitable and too restricting. Degas preferred home study of classical tradition. He was also able through hospitable family members to make regular trips to Italy during this period. He studied hard making copies of pictures and filling sketchbooks.
In 1859 Degas opened a studio in Paris and portraiture and historical subjects occupied his time. Degas finally abandoned the historical genre in 1866 for several reasons: In 1862 Degas met Manet who was interested in themes from modern life in preference to traditional subject matter. Degas also met novelist Edmond Duranty a passionate believer in realism who wanted to remove the barrier between art and life. Degas was a regular at cafe Guerbois where many artists associated with Impressionism would meet.
Degas's changing views were reflected in his art during the late 1860's. He turned to theatre and the racecourse for inspiration. During the Franco-Prussian war (1870-1871) Degas served in the artillery. He contracted a severe chill during his service, which was the first trouble with his eyes.
Degas lived with relatives in New Orleans, Louisiana 1872-1873. One of the paintings he did there and then brought back to France, The Cotton Exchange at New Orleans got him favorable attention, and was his only work purchased by a museum (that of Pau) during his lifetime.
On his return he opened a studio, concentrating on themes from modern life: dancers, acrobats, singers, washerwomen, etc. He also did female nudes, which, along with dancers, became his favourite subject mater. In 1874 Degas' father died, leaving him vast debts. Degas was forced to sell off some of his art collection. From 1874 Degas sent works to the impressionist group shows (he helped organise first impressionist exhibition). In 1881 he showed The little dancer of fourteen years, his only sculpture exhibited during his life. After the Last Impressionist exhibition in 1886, Degas stopped sending works to exhibitions.
In the 1880s, when his eyesight began to fail, Degas shifted his talent to sculpture and pastel, which did not require such acute vision. By the 1890's he could only work on large compositions and in 1908 he gave up art completely. It was a crippling blow to Degas. Degas was evicted from his home and a new studio was found for him, but he never settled there. He wandered the streets like a blind Homer.
Famous and revered, Degas died in Paris on 27 September 1917 and is buried in the Cimetière de Montmartre, Paris, France. Degas left more than 2000 oil paintings and pastels and 150 sculptures.
Degas' innovative composition, influenced by photography and the Japanese woodblock prints called Ukiyo-e , his skillful drawing, and perceptive analysis of movement made him one of the masters of progressive art in the late 19th century. He is especially known for his paintings of ballet dancers and other women, as well as of race horses. He is often considered an Impressionist, but his work sometimes goes more in classical and realist directions, other times to Romanticism.

paintings : Edgar Degas (1834-1917)

Edgar Degas Oil Paintings
Degas preferred painting in an art studio, which was unusual for the Impressionists of that time. The entertainment world especially intrigued Degas and shows up often in his works throughout his life. Degas's oil paintings reveal his fascination with the beauty and sophistication of the ballet. Unlike other Impressionists of that time he preferred painting in an art studio which was unusual. He would sketch his subjects where he found them and return to his studio to capture them on canvas.
Degas art is considered some of the finest in all of art history, and the ballerinas in the Degas paintings are considered some of the most famous and beautiful figures in the art world. Every Degas oil painting, whether it contains ballerinas or other forms, pays attention to the fine details of the object. Edgar Degas truly understood how to enhance the form of any subject and elevate it to its highest reaches of beauty without altering the actual object. Many famous museums around the world contain at least one Edgar Degas painting, so an actual Degas painting is almost impossible (and unaffordable) to come by. However, you can have your very own Edgar Degas oil painting in your home, hand-painted with all the passion of Degas himself and reproduced for you at an affordable price. These Degas reproductions are the best available, and no one will ever even know you have reproductions of Degas because they look so real.

Edgar Degas Paintings, Drawings and Photography!

Edgar Degas (born Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas; 19 July 1834 – 27 September 1917) was a French artist famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers. He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, although he rejected the term, preferring to be called a realist. He was a superb draftsman, and particularly masterly in depicting movement, as can be seen in his renditions of dancers, racecourse subjects and female nudes. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and for their portrayal of human isolation.

Narrated by curators Christine Giviskos and Lee Hendrix, this video explores how Degas's studies of a famous circus performer exemplify his creative approach. The Getty's "Miss Lala at the Fernando Circus" (1879) is one of at least five preparatory drawings made for a painting of the same name.

Edgar Degas (1837-1917) was the Impressionist artist known as the observer of modern Paris life. Descended from an aristocratic family, he managed to hide his pedigree when he was behind the curtain at the Paris Opéra, sketching the young, working class ballet rats in the chorus line. As if peering through an imaginary peephole, in the 1870s he began an endless search to convey the movements and p

Recently while researching an episode that I'm working on (Saul Leiter, Early Black and White) - I found an interesting quote from an interview stating who Saul Leiter's influences were.
He cited Edgar Degas, Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard. Saul was also a painter his whole life, though he's less known for his painting work. I'm not sure if Saul knew this, but all 3 of the painters he named as influences were also photographers.
I think this creates an interesting thread of painters influenced by photography influencing another photographer who also paints.
In this video we're going to explore some of the relationships I've found as well as look at the photography made by these master painters and how it relates to the early black and white images that Saul Leiter produced.

Cecily Brown is considered a central figure in the resurgence of painting at the turn of the century. We met the praised British painter at her New York studio for a talk about borrowing imagery from other artists, and how she has always responded to dark, scary art.
“Art was something that seemed very glamorous and dangerous to me as a child.” Brown nurtured an early fascination with the “scary” art, such as Francis Bacon, and would rummage her parents’ art books for the very darkest pictures, such as a particular painting by George Grosz of a butcher shop with human meat in it: “I had sneak looks at it, like you might look at Playboy or something.”
Brown, who had been painting naked women for several years, felt an urge to move on to painting men and boys. The painting ‘Young Spartans Exercising’ by Edgar Degas (1860) helped her move on to this: “Lots of artists are like magpies, where you steal or you take or you borrow what you need from somebody. But then obviously – and hopefully – it gets transformed.” This is characteristic of how Brown draws inspiration from her favourite painters and paintings, absorbing and changing images and ultimately making them her own.
“The element of surprise has to be there.” Brown prefers to “contradict” herself, and to push her paintings to a degree where she actually risks losing something good. She sums up this approach by quoting her friend, German painter Charlene von Heyl: “Take no prisoners.”
Cecily Brown (b. 1969) is a British painter. Brown creates vivid, atmospheric depictions of fragmented bodies, often in erotic positions in the midst of swells of colour and movement. This has made many compare her to painters such as Francis Bacon and Francisco Goya, and she is furthermore credited as a central figure in the resurgence of painting at the turn of the millennium. Brown has exhibited extensively, including at The Saatchi Gallery in London and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. Solo shows have also been held at prominent venues such as Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills, New York and London, Contemporary Fine Arts in Berlin and Kunsthalle in Mannheim. She lives and works in New York City.
Cecily Brown was interviewed by Kasper Bech Dyg in her studio in New York City in November 2014.

Here she looks at 'Young Spartans Exercising' by Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas. Find out why Brown has been coming back to the painting for more than 20 years and
still finds it 'completely compelling'.

Balthus, the Polish-French modern classical artist
Balthus's style is primarily classical. His work shows numerous influences, including the writings of Emily Brontë, the writings and photography of Lewis Carroll, and the paintings of Masaccio, Piero della Francesca, Simone Martini, Poussin, Jean-Étienne Liotard, Joseph Reinhardt, Géricault, Ingres, Goya, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Courbet, Edgar Degas, Félix Vallotton and Paul Cézanne. Although his technique and compositions were inspired by pre-renaissance painters, there also are eerie intimations of contemporary surrealists like de Chirico. Painting the figure at a time when figurative art was largely ignored, he is widely recognised as an important 20th-century artist.

At the age of 36 his sight began to fail. He could no longer stand bright daylight. In only a few years he would go blind, this he knew.
Edgar Degas, the son of an Italian banker, had stopped studying law to become a painter. He was a brilliant portraitist, but even more than this he loved to paint the dynamics of movement in horse races, to sketch the milliners on the boulevards, to depict with his paintbrush or pastel crayons the young women who worked as laundresses and water-carriers.
Like no other artist, he captured the fleeting moment of movement. Due to his failing eyesight, he retreated increasingly into the world of artificial light, painting the female singers in the concert cafes on the Champs-Elysees, the ballerinas in the Paris Opera, the cocottes in the brothels, intimate scenes in the boudoir.
He became a permanent guest in the Opera, studying meticulously the ballerinas in training and at rehearsals, behind the scenes and on stage. Degas recorded every gesture with his paintbrush and pastel crayon as in a photograph: unconventionally composed "snapshots" of painting. His radiantly colorful pastels breathe the air of the stage, testify to the glory and the toil, to the aesthetics and the effort of a dancer's everyday routine. In his lifetime Degas' picture "Dancers at the Bar" was sold in an auction for the highest price ever reached for a painting by a living artist in France.
The documentary follows the trail of the painter through nocturnal Paris at the turn of the century, in the Paris Opera and the concert cafes.

Edgar Degas (1837-1917) was the Impressionist artist known as the observer of modern Paris life. Descended from an aristocratic family, he managed to hide his pedigree when he was behind the curtain at the Paris Opéra, sketching the young, working class ballet rats in the chorus line. As if peering through an imaginary peephole, in the 1870s he began an endless search to convey the movements and positions of dancers placed in unusual angles of vision. His close friend, writer and librettist of Carmen, Ludovic Halévy, documented back stage activity by writing a series of short story episodes gathered into one volume called La Famille Cardinal.
Degas created 33 monotypes to correspond with the adventures of Pauline and Virginie Cardinal and their audacious, controlling parents who kept a close eye on their adolescent girls, fending off the invitations of their lecherous, older admirers. Halévy, however, failed to recognize their greatness and the monotypes remained in Degas' studio until 1928 when Marcel Guérin, David Weill and publisher Auguste Blaizot formed a consortium to purchase the lot at auction. The monotypes were then reduced and reproduced by the photogravure process in 1938. They comprise the illustrations for a valuable limited edition, rare book; only 350 numbered copies exist which rarely surface at auction or in rare book shops.
The etchings are particularly important because many of the monotypes done by the hand of Degas have vanished. The etchings of La Famille Cardinal remain the only documentation of their existence. Jean Sutherland Boggs, Jean Adhémar and Françoise Cachin, Eugenia Parry Janis and John Canaday refer extensively to the etchings in their scholarly research on Degas. A bibliography and scholarly documentation of the etchings are available upon request. Price inquiries are cordially invited.
