The Broad Contemporary Art Museum. Interview with Architect Elizabeth Diller
In this video we have a look at Eli and Edythe Broad's new contemporary art museum in Los Angeles, The Broad. We attended the press preview to have a look at the Broad's collection, and especially at the architecture of the new building that was designed by the New York-based architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro. We had the pleasure to talk to the architecture firms founding partner Elizabeth Diller, who provided us with some basic information on the concept of the museum's architecture with its “veil-and-vault” idea, the challenges the architecture studio faced, and how they worked with the natural light.
The Broad is a new contemporary art museum built by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. The museum is designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler. The Broad is home to the nearly 2,000 works of art in the Broad collection, which comprises prominent holdings of postwar and contemporary art and offers free general admission. With its innovative “veil-and-vault” concept, the 120,000-square-foot, $140-million building will feature two floors of gallery space to showcase The Broad’s comprehensive collection and will be the headquarters of The Broad Art Foundation’s worldwide lending library.
Diller Scofidio + Renfro is an interdisciplinary design studio that integrates architecture, the visual arts, and the performing arts. Based in New York City, Diller Scofidio + Renfro is led by three partners – Elizabeth Diller, Ricardo Scofidio, and Charles Renfro. Selected projects include: World Trade Center Viewing Platform, New York, NY (2001); Blur, Swiss Expo, Lake Neuchâtel (2002); Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA (2006); The Broad, Los Angeles, CA (2015); Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Expansion, New York, NY (in design).

Today, street art has traveled to nearly every corner of the globe, evolving into a highly complex and ornate art form. The World Atlas of Street Art and Graffiti is the definitive survey of international street art, focusing on the world’s most influential urban artists and artworks. It's been nearly a century since Marcel Duchamp exhibited a urinal and called it art. Since then, painting has been declared dead several times over, and contemporary art has now expanded to include just about any object, action, or event: dance routines, slideshows, functional hair salons, seemingly random accretions of waste. In the meantime, being an artist has gone from a join-the-circus fantasy to a plausible vocation for scores of young people in America.
But why--and how and by whom--does a

This handsome book is the first comprehensive examination of the Pictures Generation, a loosely knit group of artists working in New York from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s. The overarching subject of the work of these artists was imagery itself—how pictures not only depict but also shape how we perceive the world and ourselves. The collective achievement of this group is an extremely important chapter in the history of contemporary art.Born into an expanding media and consumer culture and educated in the strategies of Minimal and Conceptual art, the artists of the Pictures Generation, including Robert Longo, Richard Prince, David Salle, and Cindy Sherman, chose to return to representation, addressing the rhetorical, social, and psychological functions of the image across all media (photography, painting and sculpture, drawings and prints, film and video, and music and performance). While the careers of these artists are typically considered in isolation, this catalogue traces their complex interrelationships and mutual development—beginning with the emergence of a group sensibility characterized by techniques of distancing and theatricality and ending with a resurgence of painting by mostly male artists (which was contested by women artists working in media such as video, photography, and installation).Featured artists:Ericka BeckmanDara BirnbaumBarbara BloomEric BogosianGlenn BrancaTroy BrauntuchJames CasebereSarah CharlesworthRhys ChathamCharlie CloughNancy DwyerJack GoldsteinBarbara KrugerLouise LawlerThomas LawsonSherrie LevineRobert LongoAllan McCollumPaul McMahonMatt MullicanRichard PrinceDavid SalleCindy ShermanLaurie SimmonsMichael SmithJames WellingMichael Zwack

In the mid-1980s the sprouting of new movements that had driven modern art since the nineteenth century finally went dormant, sputtering out with a last few half-hearted lels ('pattern painting', 'neo-geo', 'commodity art'). But this was not the end of art history -- far from it. In the years since, art's creative development has remained more vibrant than ever, resulting in a staggering diversity of new forms.
Defining Contemporary Art responds to this unique landscape with an innovative approach to art history. Assembled and written by eight of the most prominent curators working today, all of whom have both witnessed and shaped this period, Defining Contemporary Art tells the story of the two hundred pivotal artworks of the past twenty-five years. These artworks include not only the most talked out pieces but also the quietly influential works, those which may have been overlooked at the time of their making but which went on to change the paradigm of their era. Arranged year by year, these two hundred works provide a true chronological depiction of creativity in our era, forming a mosaic in which readers may find their own patterns..

On Reflection the Art of Margaret Harrison

Radical Since 1971 - What would happen if you dressed Captain America in a corset and heels? How should we respond to war & exploitation? Why are women paid less and expected to do more? Over her 40+ year career, feminist artist and political activist Margaret Harrison has tried to answer these questions, creating an enormous body of work that includes oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, and large installations. Utilizing her Royal Academy training, cultural icons from Wonder Woman to Lady Gaga, and elements of the British landscape tradition, she insightfully comments on issues of cultural and political importance locally (UK) and internationally. From her first censored solo exhibition in 1971 (one of the first Feminist solo shows in London) to winning the Northern Art Prize in 2013 (Leeds, UK), Harrison has challenged the status quo with thought provoking and often humorous work questioning notions of gender & identity, place, politics, celebrity, domestic violence, and the exploitation of women's labor and sexuality. About the Artist Margaret Harrison's work has helped define the relationship of feminism, art and politics in Britain, and she is frequently invited to speak on these topics in international forums. Her work has been exhibited recently in shows central to contemporary debates about feminist art practice, such as the 2009 exhibition REBELLE: Art and Feminism 1969-2009 (Museum of Contemporary Art, Arnhem, the Netherlands), the 2007 touring exhibition WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution (MOCA Los Angeles/MoMA PS1, New York), and the 11th Istanbul Biennale in 2009. Her work has been collected by the Tate Museum and other major institutions. She currently lives and works in both Cumbria and San Francisco. About the Author Kim Munson is an author, curator & art historian based in San Francisco.

An Introduction to Art
An Introduction to Art
Donwload Here http://youtube.channel.pdf.warlords.xyz/?book=0300109156&Paddy; =c0g.html
This original and inspiring book offers clear and wide-ranging introduction to the arts of painting and sculpture, to the principal artistic print media, and to the visual arts of modernism and post-modernism. Covering the entire history of art, from Paleolithic cave painting to contemporary art, it provides foundational guidance to the basic character and techniques of the different art forms, to the various genres of painting in the western tradition, and to the techniques of sculpture as they have been practiced over several millenia and across a wide range of cultures. Throughout the book, Harrison discusses the relative priorities of aesthetic appreciation and historical inquiry, and of the importance of combining the two approaches. Written in a style that is at once graceful, engaging, and personal, as well as analytical and exact, this illuminating book offers an impassioned and timely defense of the importance and value of the first-hand encounter with works of art, whether in museums or in their original locations. Designed to be useful and attractive to students and teachers of art, art history, and aesthetics, the book will appeal also to the interested general reader and to those visitors to museums and exhibitions who welcome guidance to the objects on display, and to the means of gaining the maximum pleasure and instruction from them. The 250 color illustrations, each with generous, informative captions, include both well-known works and a host of less familiar examples from different cultures and periods.

The World Atlas of Street Art and Graffiti
The World Atlas of Street Art and Graffiti
Donwload Here http://youtube.channel.pdf.warlords.xyz/?book=0300199422&Cleon;=mo0z.html
Painted murals first appeared in Latin America in the early 20th century; in the 1950s, spray-can graffiti associated with Latino gangs followed, notably the cholo” graffiti of Los Angeles. Today, street art has traveled to nearly every corner of the globe, evolving into a highly complex and ornate art form. The World Atlas of Street Art and Graffiti is the definitive survey of international street art, focusing on the world’s most influential urban artists and artworks. Since the lives and works of urban artists are inextricably linked to specific streets and places, this beautifully illustrated volume features specially commissioned city artworks” that provide an intimate understanding of these metropolitan landscapes. Organized geographically by country and city, more than 100 of today’s most important street artistsincluding Espo in New York, Shepard Fairey in Los Angeles, Os Gêmeos in Brazil, and Anthony Lister in Australiaare profiled alongside key examples of their work. The evolution of street art and graffiti within each region is also chronicled, providing essential historical context. With contributions by the foremost authorities on street art and graffiti, this landmark publication provides a nuanced understanding of a widespread contemporary art practice. The World Atlas of Street Art and Graffiti emphasizes urban art’s powerful commitment to a spontaneous creativity that is inherently connected to the architecture of the metropolis.

The Contemporaries Travels in the 21stCentury Art World
The Contemporaries Travels in the 21stCentury Art World
Donwload Here http://youtube.channel.pdf.warlords.xyz/?book=1620400944&Paddy; =5lz.html
But why--and how and by whom--does all this art get made? How is it evaluated? And for what, if anything, will today's artists be remembered? In The Contemporaries, Roger White, himself a young painter, serves as our spirited, skeptical guide through this diffuse creative world.
White takes us into the halls of the RISD graduate program, where students learn critical lessons that go far beyond how to apply paint to canvases. In New York, we meet the neophytes who assist established artists--and who walk the fine line between "assistance" and "making the art." In Milwaukee, White trails a group of friends trying to create a viable scene where rent is cheap, but where the spotlight rarely shines. And he gives us an intimate perspective on three wildly different careers: that of Dana Schutz, an emerging star who is revitalizing painting; Mary Walling Blackburn, whose challenging art defies market forces; and Stephen Kaltenbach, a '70s wunderkind who is back on the critical radar, perhaps in spite of his own willful obscurity.
From young artists trying to elbow their way in to those working hard at dropping out, White's essential book offers a once-in-a-generation glimpse of the inner workings of the American art world at a moment of unparalleled ambition, uncertainty, and creative exuberance.

World Art Now, The Provincialism Problem Then: 40 years of contemporary art

Join Terry as he revisits this seminal text and addresses his vision of how Australia fits into the world of contemporary art today. Presented in conjunction with Discipline-Gertrude Contemporary.

Alain Badiou & Judith Balso. Contemporary art: considered philosophically and poetologically. 2014
http://www.egs.edu/ Alain Badiou and Judith Balso, French philosopher and poet discussing the nature of contemporary art, contemporaneity and the dual tenets of modern art, subtraction and formalization. Other topics include modernity, music, painting, rupture, event, poetry. In relation to the authors Hegel, Osip Mandelstam, Robin Blaser, Jack Spicer and Dante. Public open lecture for the students and faculty of the European Graduate School EGS Media and Communication Studies department program Saas-Fee Switzerland Europe 2014 Alain Badiou and Judith Balso.
Alain Badiou (b. 1937, Rabat, Morocco) holds the Rene Descartes Chair at the European Graduate School. He studied at the École Normale Supérieure, to which he later returned, to become the Chair of the Philosophy Department. Alain Badiou has also taught at the University of Paris VIII (Vincennes-Saint Denis), and continues to do so at the Collège International de Philosophie. Badiou was one of the founding members of the Unified Socialist Party, which was particularly active in the struggle for the decolonization of Algeria. To this day, Badiou remains both a member of the Union des jeunesses communistes de France (marxistes-léninistes), and at the center of L'Organisation Politique, a 'post-party organization' concerned with direct popular intervention in social and political issues.
Trained as a mathematician, Alain Badiou is one of the most original French philosophers today. Influenced by Plato, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Jacques Lacan and Gilles Deleuze, he is an outspoken critic of both the analytic as well as the postmodern schools of thoughts. His philosophy seeks to expose and make sense of the potential of radical innovation (revolution, invention, transfiguration) in every situation. He is the author of several successful novels and plays as well as more than a dozen philosophical works, among them in English are Deleuze: The Clamor of Being (1999), Ethics: An Essay on the Understanding of Evil (2000), On Beckett (2003), Being and Event (2005), Number and Numbers (2008), The Meaning of Sarkozy (2008), Logic of Worlds: Being and Event, Volume 2 (2009), Pocket Pantheon: Figures of Postwar Philosophy (2009), Theory of the Subject (2009), The Communist Hypothesis (2010), and Five Lessons on Wagner (2010), The Rebirth of History: Times of Riots and Uprisings (2012) and Philosophy For Militants (2012).
Judith Balso, Ph.D., is a professor of poetry at the European Graduate School EGS, where she conducts an annual workshop on poetry with an established poet. Each year she brings in a different poet to talk about their work and the poetic process. Among the poets she has invited in the past are Jacques Roubaud, Alessandro De Francesco, and Philippe Beck. Judith Balso received her Ph.D. from Marc Bloch University, Strasbourg in 1997. She currently teaches at the Collège international de philosophie in Paris and at the European Graduate School EGS.
Judith Balso's intellectual work revolves around a study of the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa. She is the author of Pessoa, le passeur métaphysique (2006), Le Portugal de près: Textes et documents (1976), and Pessoa (Les conférences du Perroquet) (1991).
Judith Balso is also active politically and has been writing in the name of emancipatory politics since the 1970s. More recently, she has insisted on creating new political movements distanced from the state. Judith Balso gives a unique and emancipatory perspecitve to the timeless questions of politics and philosophy. Through a unique and rigirous perspective her work shines a new light on important questions of our time.

Ukrainian Contemporary Art Exhibition. London. 3-03-2015.
These days there is so much of greyness and darkness and sadness that sometimes the only dream is to escape from it into the world of colour and hapiness. That is exactly the world we discovered at Ukrainian Contemporary Art Exhibition at DARREN BAKER GALLERY in heart of busy city centre of London.
The atmosphere was very friendly and warming, but most of all it was a lot of fun. For the first time ever we have been introduced to 3D artwork. On the entrance we were welcomed with a smile and some fun 3D glasses to appreciate truly inspirational work of Taia Galagan (Tatiana Gershuni). Her recent series of paintings are truly a cultural phenomenon and contain elements of 3D pictures known as 'anaglyphs' as an experiment with the technical and visual boundaries of painting as a medium. Alla Aleksieieva and Petro Lebedynets are both bright representatives of Ukrainian modern abstract art. They consider colours as a main element of painting and also as a metaphor for human perception of the world. Therefore their creations stroke us with colors of life as soon as we came to see it. Thank you very much Darren Baker Gallery, Ukrainian Art Gallery and ANN Gallery for such a great experience!
The exhibiton stays in DARREN BAKER GALLERY, 81 Charlotte Street, London, W1T 4PP untill 10th of March. You can call them with any questions on 0207 580 5332.
It is a must see not to miss kind of thing!!!

What is Contemporary Art?
Dick Nelson speaks at the Viewpoints Gallery in Makawao.
According to WIKIPEDIA it is “art produced at the present period in time”.
Also a synonym for “Modern”.
This definition provides little guidance for either the artist or layman.
The Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan displays art work produced decades ago.
What then do we call those who followed these “Modern Artists”?
