Drachma, pl. drachmas or drachmae (δραχμή, pl. δραχμές or δραχμαί (until 1982)) was the currency used in Greece during several periods in its history:
It was also a small weight unit.
The name drachma is derived from the verb δράσσομαι (drássomai, "to grasp"). It is believed that the same word with the meaning of "handful" or "handle" is found in Linear B tablets of the Mycenean Pylos. Initially a drachma was a fistful (a "grasp") of six oboloí or obeloí (metal sticks, literally "spits") used as a form of currency as early as 1100 BC and being literally a form of "bullion": bronze, copper, or iron ingots denominated by weight. A hoard of over 150 rod-shaped obeloi were uncovered at Heraion of Argos in Peloponnese. Six of them are displayed at the Numismatic Museum of Athens.
It was the standard unit of silver coinage at most ancient Greek and Roman mints, and the name 'obol' was used to describe a coin that was one-sixth of a drachma. The notion that "drachma" derived from the word for fistful was recorded by Herakleides of Pontos (387-312 BC) who was informed by the priests of Heraion that Pheidon, king of Argos, dedicated rod-shaped obeloi to Heraion. Similar information about Pheidon's obeloi was also recorded at the Parian Chronicle.

Still Report #398 - Forbes: Return to Drachma
Today’s Forbes magazine online has a piece by Tim Worstall, a Fellow at the Adam Smith Institute - a libertarian think tank in London.
Worstall - to my shock and approval – is calling for Greece to not only leave the EU, but the Euro as well - and reissue the Drachma.
“… the Euro is a bad idea for everyone … the European Union itself is a bad idea…. So, yes, Greece really should leave the Euro, should have left the Euro 5 years ago.”
Well, welcome to the party, Mr. Worstall. Five years ago, I was calling for Greece to leave and reissue the Drachma.
25 years ago, I wrote my first book on the perils of over-consolidation of power which is the e

Left Platform Leader Pana-gio-tis Laf-az-anis opposes the European deal:
“Democracy is finished. The system of government in the country is the dictatorship of the euro.”
Tsipris has asked for party unity in order to approve the bailout. He says that otherwise he will have to resort to another referendum with the question:
“euro or drachma?”
So what’s wrong with that?
The President of the Greek Parliament,
Zo-e Kon-stan-top-ou-lou, also opposes the deal:
“It is the historic duty of the Left to protect the people and democracy … to protect the right to dream … to build a new, viable world.”
Greek officials were hoping to have the bailout deal signed by August 18 to avoid more bridging loans.
This timetable is now generally thought to be optimistic as new economic data shows that the Greek depression is deepening. New figures show the economy may contract by 7% this year.
This morning, the Greek stock market opened after a 5 week closure. It is plunging – down 20%.

25 years ago, I wrote my first book on the perils of over-consolidation of power which is the essence of the European Union.
Mr. Worstall then quotes Hans-Werner Sinn writing in the New York Times:
“… credit has delayed a Greek bankruptcy, but it has failed to revitalize the Greek economy.”
No, and it never will until the average Greek citizen sees what’s in it for them. If your economic policy does not create Buy-In by the general public, that policy is doomed to failure.
EU policy towards Greece has been all about squeezing the life out of the nation, not making it economically viable. All the benefits of EU policy go only to the banking class.
Then Mr. Sinn continues as though he has been closely watching my reports in the last five years:
“Greece could reintroduce the drachma as the only legal tender.
“The devaluation would induce Greeks to buy domestic rather than imported products.
“Tourism would get a boost, and capital flight would be reversed. Rich Greeks would return with their money, buy real estate and renovate it, fueling a construction boom.”
Exactly right on, Mr. Sinn – EXACTLY!
Greece; it’s never too late to choose the Drachma. It is your ONLY way out.
I’m still reporting from the nest of my nu-CLE-EAR family in the NUCLEUS of our nu-CLE-EAR nation. Good day.

Some members of Greece's leftist government wanted to raid central bank reserves and hack taxpayer accounts to prepare a return to the drachma, according to reports on Sunday that highlighted the chaos in the ruling Syriza party.
It is not clear how seriously the plans, attributed to former Energy Minister Panagiotis Lafazanis and former Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, were considered by the government and both ministers were sacked earlier this month. However the reports have been seized on by opposition parties who have demanded an explanation.

Syriza's Endgame: Hyperinflation of the Drachma
As American's shake off their Independence Day hangovers, Greeks will head to the polls for a referendum that many predict will result in their exit from the Eurozone. The ballot measure, recently deemed constitutional by the top court in Greece, is on whether to accept the terms of a bailout package offered by the nation's creditors. Without some kind of debt assistance, it is pretty universally understood that the birthplace of Western civilization will be crushed by its obligations.
The package makes demands for austerity measures in Greece. Cuts to government spending, privatization of industry, and other measures none too appetizing to

Greek PM Tsipras under pressure over covert Syriza drachma plan reports
Some members of Greece's leftist government wanted to raid central bank reserves and hack taxpayer accounts to prepare a return to the drachma, according to reports on Sunday that highlighted the chaos in the ruling Syriza party.
It is not clear how seriously the plans, attributed to former Energy Minister Panagiotis Lafazanis and former Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis, were considered by the government and both ministers were sacked earlier this month. However the reports have been seized on by opposition parties who have demanded an explanation.
The reports came at the end of a week of fevered speculation over what Syriza hardliners had in mind as an alternative to the tough bailout terms that Tsipras reluctantly accepted to keep Greece in the euro.
Around a quarter of the party's 149 lawmakers rebelled over the plan to pass sweeping austerity measures in exchange for up to 86 billion euros in fresh loans and Tsipras has struggled to hold the divided party together
In an interview with Sunday's edition of the RealNews daily, Panagiotis Lafazanis, the hardline former energy minister who lost his job after rebelling over the bailout plans, said he had urged the government to tap the reserves of the Bank of Greece in defiance of the European Central Bank.
Lafazanis, leader of a hardline faction in the ruling Syriza party that has argued for a return to the drachma, said the move would have allowed pensions and public sector wages to be paid if Greece were forced out of the euro.
"The main reason for that was for the Greek economy and Greek people to survive, which is the utmost duty every government has under the constitution," he said.
However he denied a report in the Financial Times that he wanted Bank of Greece Governor Yannis Stouranaras to be arrested if he had opposed a move to empty the central bank vaults. In comments to the semi-official Athens News Agency, he called the report a mixture of "lies, fantasy, fear-mongering, speculation and old-fashioned anti-communism".
In a separate report in the conservative Kathimerini daily, Varoufakis was quoted as saying that a small team in Syriza had prepared plans to secretly copy online tax codes. It said the "Plan B" was devised to allow the government to introduce a parallel payment system if the banking system was closed down.
In remarks the newspaper said were made to an investors' conference on July 16, Varoufakis said passwords used by Greeks to access their online tax accounts were to have been copied secretly and used to issue new PIN numbers for every taxpayer to be used in transactions with the state.
"This would have created a parallel banking system, which would have given us some breathing space, while the banks would have been shut due to the ECB's aggressive policy," Varoufakis was quoted as saying.
Varoufakis, an outspoken academic economist who became deeply unpopular with other European finance ministers during his five months in office, stood down earlier this month to facilitate bailout talks. He has been a strident opponent of the deal ever since.
Under the plan, which the report said went back to before Tsipras was elected in January, transactions through the parallel system would have been nominated in euros but could easily change into drachmas overnight, he was quoted as saying.
Varoufakis denied the report. "So, I was going to "hijack" Greek citizens' tax file numbers? Impressed by my defamers' imagination," he wrote on Twitter.
SHADOW SYSTEMS
The center-right New Democracy party and the centrist To Potami and the Socialist Pasok parties, which all backed Tsipras in parliamentary votes on the bailout this month, demanded a response to the reports.
"The revelations that are coming out raise a major political, economic and moral issue for the government which needs in-depth examination," it said in a statement.
"Is it true that a designated team in the finance ministry had undertaken work on a backup plan? Is it true they had planned to raid the national Mint and that they prepared for a parallel currency by hacking the tax registration numbers of the taxpayers?"
To Potami said the reports of covert plans were worthy of a bad thriller.
The Kathimerini report said access to the Greek tax service's computer systems was under the control of inspectors from the "troika", the international creditors' group, and therefore inaccessible to the government.
As a result, Varoufakis and an official in charge of information systems planned to copy taxpayer codes from online accounts and set up a shadow system. However, according to the report, he said the plan had never been approved by Tsipras.
Deputy Finance Minister Dimitris Mardas denied the government had ever discussed plans to take Greece out of the euro. "I have repeatedly said that such discussions have never taken place at a government policy level," he told Skai television.

STORYLINE:
Drachma nostalgia is growing in Greece as locals increasingly blame the euro for their current economic woes.
But even as Prime Minister George Papandreou heads to Brussels on Thursday for an EU summit that will consider whether to come up with a bailout plan for Greece, Greeks still want the euro.
Numismatologist Thanassis Tarassouleas said Greeks loved their drachma because it was so strongly tied with their country''s history.
"People always are nostalgic with the drachma because they knew it. They loved it. It was a currency that was weaved into the history of Greece. It had its good and bad times, but most of them were good," he said.
Despite Greeks'' pleasant memories of the drachma, Platon Monokroussos, head of financial market research at Eurobank EFG, said that currency''s history was not smooth sailing.
The drachma stumbled through a series of crises, including state bankruptcies, wars and violent swings of government between monarchy and republic. The drachma entered history books when Greece switched to the euro.
Now Greece is in financial trouble with its relatively new currency.
Monokroussos said there was no possibility that Greece would abandon the euro, for political but also for economic reasons.

Cuts to government spending, privatization of industry, and other measures none too appetizing to the ruling party or the people who elected them. Syriza, the "Coalition of the Radical Left" led by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, was elected specifically to do away with the austerity measures imposed by the last bailout package the country had accepted. Greeks took to the streets with molotov cocktails and rioted in protest of the measures, before voting in Syriza which is made up of open Marxists and Trotskyites.

They were required to wear distinctive dresses and had to pay taxes. Hardline leftists of the Greece's ruling party refuse to bow to EU creditors demands to implement austerity measures in return for the cash needed to keep Athens afloat and are working out how to go it alone after bankruptcy.
Prime minister Alexis Tsipras has also publicly warned that if creditors don't change their stance, Greece is ready to take the plunge.
He said: "If Europe wants the division and the perpetuation of servitude, we will take the plunge and issue a 'big no'."
It comes as the latest round of talks between the Greek government and its creditors over the weekend failed to produce a deal - which moves the country another step closer to leaving the union.

Michael Portillo's Great Euro Crisis | 2012 Documentary
Michael Portillo's Great Euro Crisis
This World
Self-confessed Eurosceptic Michael Portillo visits debt-stricken Greece. He believes that the euro crisis must have shaken the Greeks' faith in Europe's single currency and wonders if there'll be a desire to revert to the free-floating drachma. In Athens he meets everyone from a destitute young family to the former finance minister and the outgoing Prime Minister, and is surprised by some of their answers.
Meanwhile in Germany, Europe's economic powerhouse, Michael encounters the taxpayers who are paying most towards Greece's mammoth financial bailout while having to watch angry Athenians burning the German flag.
With tensions rising in the Eurozone, is this the moment it becomes more united, or will it be pulled apart?

As Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and German Chancellor Angela Merkel engage in a showdown with the world watching, everybody is looking for answers as to how this problem originated.
What is the Truth About the Greece Debt Crisis? How did this start - and how can it be prevented in the future? Those who don’t learn from their mistakes shall be doomed to repeat them. Sadly, politicians never learn. There will be no economic recovery, prepare yourself accordingly.

Time is ticking for Greece! The country announced Tuesday that it would not be making its deadline on a debt payment to the International Monetary Fund. Keep in mind, Greece was expected to pay the IMF €1.6 billion in order to continue its current bailout program. But without the funds, Greece instead decided to look for a new one. Ameera David weighs in.
Then, Erin Ade sits down with Paul Brodsky – founder of Macro Allocation Incorporated. Paul tells us how the world would react to Greece implementing a new national currency and gives us his take on whether the drachma could boost Greek exports.
After the break, Bianca Facchinei takes a look at the postponed Iran talks. If sanctions are lifted, Iran could benefit from the tens of billions of dollars in sanctions relief and potentially impact the state of the oil market.
Afterwards, Erin is joined by Cate Long – partner at Puerto Rico Clearinghouse. Cate tells us if she saw Puerto Rico’s debt crisis coming and gives us her take on their best options for their government to take.
And in The Big Deal, Ameera and Edward Harrison continue the discussion on Greece and what’s to blame for their economic crisis. Edward says we should blame the Euro because it is a failure. European citizens were never told they could not have economic integration, national sovereignty, and democracy at the same time but that’s what the Euro has meant.

[389] Greece faces off with creditors at non-existent Eurozone summit
Eurozone leaders held an emergency summit in Brussels on Tuesday to discuss the repercussions of the Greek referendum. That referendum echoed a resounding “NO” vote on the part of the Greek people who said the bailout terms set by international creditors were too austere. Prime Minister Tsipras was expected to unveil a new proposal for talks, but multiple reports indicate no such proposal was presented. Ameera David weighs in.
Then, Ameera is joined by Edward Harrison, on the ground in Athens covering the latest on the debt crisis. Edward gives us his take on the emergency summit and how much the humanitarian crisis in Greece has developed.
After the break, Bianca Facchinei takes a look Bitcoin’s role in the Greek debt crisis. Though Bitcoin is far from its value peak of $979, it is trading around its highest rate since March and Bitcoin bulls expect the demand to increase.
Afterwards, Erin Ade sits down with Daniel Alpert – managing partner at Westwood Capital. Daniel tells us what would happen to Greece if they implemented a new drachma and if he expects other countries, like China or Russia, to supply funding.
And in The Big Deal, Ameera and Erin talk about the Russian Direct Investment Fund, which announced this week that Saudi Arabia has signed a commitment to invest up to $10 billion in Russia.

Sex & Prostitution in the Ancient World 2of2 Pompeii Documentary & Life Discovery HD™(Official)
Sex & Prostitution in the Ancient World 2of2 Pompeii Documentary & Life Discovery HD™(Official)
Both women and boys engaged in prostitution in ancient Greece.[10] The Greek word for prostitute is porne (Gr: πόρνη), derived from the verb pernemi (to sell), with the evident modern evolution. The English word pornography, and its corollaries in other languages, are directly derivative of the Greek word pornē (Gr: πόρνη).[11] Female prostitutes could be independent and sometimes influential women. They were required to wear distinctive dresses and had to pay taxes. Some similarities have been found between the Greek hetaera and the Japanese oiran, complex figures that are perhaps in an intermediate position between prostitution and courtisanerie. (See also the Indian tawaif.) Some prostitutes in ancient Greece, such as Lais were as famous for their company as their beauty, and some of these women charged extraordinary sums for their services.
Solon instituted the first of Athens' brothels (oik'iskoi) in the 6th century BC, and with the earnings of this business he built a temple dedicated to Aphrodite Pandemos (or Qedesh), patron goddess of this commerce. Procuring, however, was severely forbidden. In Cyprus (Paphus) and in Corinth, a type of religious prostitution was practiced where the temple counted more than a thousand prostitutes (hierodules, Gr: ιερόδουλες), according to Strabo.
Each specialised category had its proper name, so there were the chamaitypa'i, working outdoor (lie-down), the perepatetikes who met their customers while walking (and then worked in their houses), the gephyrides, who worked near the bridges. In the 5th century, Ateneo informs us that the price was of 1 obole, a sixth of a drachma and the equivalent of an ordinary worker's day salary. The rare pictures describe that sex was performed on beds with covers and pillows, while triclinia usually didn't have these accessories.
Male prostitution was also common in Greece. It was usually practiced by adolescent boys, a reflection of the pederastic custom of the time. Slave boys worked the male brothels in Athens, while free boys who sold their favours risked losing their political rights as adults.

No, it’s not all over in Greece yet -- and won’t be until they finally shed the Euro and return to the Drachma.
Prime Minister Tsipras is having trouble cobbling together a majority of the Greek Parliament to vote for the latest 86 billion Euro bailout deal which would keep Greece in the EU and forever dependent on its sagging Euro.

"An exit of the euro area and the adoption of a new national currency would necessitate a significant devaluation of the new currency by as much as 30 or 40 percent, would inflate Greece''s debt by an equally proportional amount and secondly, an independent monetary policy would need to incur significant costs in order to reinstate credibility."

Take a look!
