Estevanico (c. 1500-1539) Berber and one of the first native Africans to reach the present-day continental United States. He is known by many different names, but is commonly known as Esteban de Dorantes, Estebanico and Esteban the Moor. Enslaved as a youth by the Portuguese, he was sold to a Spanish nobleman and taken in 1527 on the Spanish Narváez expedition to establish a colony in Florida. He was one of four survivors among 300 men who explored the peninsula. By late 1528 the group had been reduced to 80 men, who survived being washed ashore at Galveston Island after an effort to sail across the Gulf of Mexico.
He traveled for eight years with Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, Andrés Dorantes de Carranza, and Alonso del Castillo Maldonado across northern New Spain (present-day U.S. Southwest and northern Mexico), reaching Spanish forces in Mexico City in 1536.
Later Estevanico served as the main guide for a return expedition to the Southwest. Spaniards believe that he was killed in the Zuni city of Hawikuh in 1539. That is only speculative, however, because the two Indians who reported back to Friar Marcos de Niza did not see him killed but only assumed he had been. He is considered a "discoverer of New Mexico."
Rex Thomas Vinson (October 22, 1935 - May 2000) was an Art teacher, artist and science fiction author active in writing in the late 1960s and early 1970s, who wrote under the pen name of Vincent King. His most successful book was his novel Candy Man (1971), which went through a number of editions in the United Kingdom, the United States, and other countries, and was a selection of the UK Science Fiction Book Club in 1972.
John Clute, writing in The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, said that his later novels "tend to combine elements of epic and grotesque sf adventure with a characteristically English darkness of emotional colouring ... and a tendency towards downbeat conclusions."
His novels were published by Gollancz, Tandem, Sphere Books and Futura Publications in England, and Ballantine Books in the United States. His short fiction was published in John Carnell's New Writings in SF series. Some of his work has been translated into French, Spanish and German.
A portrait of Esteban, the first non-indian to cross the present states of Texas, Arizona and New Mexico. Also known as Estebanico, Estephan the moor, the black moor or Mustapha Zamuri. Esteban was born around 1501 in the coastal city of Azemour in Morocco. After the Portuguese military retained control of the port, Esteban was captured and sold to Andreas Dorentes in 1522. They both took part of the Navarez expedition. His journey started in Santo Domingo and ended in Zuni pueblo in New Mexico. This video is part of a series called Muslims in America by Dr. Jerald Dirks. This part deals with Columbus and his Morisco's (Muslims who converted to Catholicism in order to save their life). Many of the instruments used to navigate (like the Astrolabe) were from the Islamic world. Under the order of the Pope, the Inquisition in Spain was in full swing and Muslims had to escape. Many of them joined the early voyages to America with the conquistadors to save their life's during 1492 from Isabella and Ferdinand.
