Barbara Lee Payton (November 16, 1927 – May 8, 1967) was an American film actress best known for her stormy social life and eventual battles with alcohol and drug addiction. In her brief life, she married four times. Payton first gained notice in the 1949 film noir Trapped, co-starring Lloyd Bridges. In 1950, she was given the opportunity to make a screen test for John Huston's production of the forthcoming MGM crime drama The Asphalt Jungle. She was not chosen and the part of the sultry mistress of a mob connected lawyer went to Marilyn Monroe. For a relative newcomer, in Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye, Payton more than managed to hold her own among a cast of Hollywood veterans and alongside a super-star like Cagney himself. Her portrayal of the hardened, seductive girlfriend, whom Cagney’s character ultimately double-crosses, was critically praised in newspaper reviews of the movie. Her acting skills were recognized and her significant screen charisma widely acknowledged. Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye was the highpoint in Payton’s career, the moment in time she was christened as a player with bonafide star power. Payton's hard drinking and hard living ultimately destroyed her both physically and emotionally. From 1955 to 1963, her growing alcoholism and drug addiction led to multiple skirmishes with the law, including arrests for the passing of bad checks and eventually an arrest on Sunset Boulevard for prostitution. 'Mysteries and Scandals' was one of my faves! woohooboy: Barbara Payton's problems existed BEFORE she got to Hollywood. Sadly once there, they accelerated to the point where her life spun right out of control. Her story was truly sad. But she didn't have the coping skills or the proper support to make it through and recover. And by the time she tried to get it together, it was just too late. Alcohol, huge Daddy issues, poor early childhood..........................................recipe for a child to become a woman with absolutely NO conscience about what she did. Also, he HATED Barbara and could not stand being in the same room with her. (His fear of discovery, perhaps?) She hated him and tried to get his love, too, much like she behaved with any other man in her life. (Including "tricks".) She could have been Borderline; that is entirely possible, but here is where it gets really interesting. (And I am only paraphrasing some experts.) It is said that if a man has Borderline Personality Disorder, he is a psychopath, (no conscience), but if a woman is diagnosed with BPD, she is a VICTIM. Don't shoot the messenger here, I am only sharing what I have read. (I do think if a man has BPD, {rare, but it happens}, he probably had a traumatic childhood.) It would SEEM with both genders, and with certain SENSITIVE children, they cannot process any abuse, subsequently TURN OFF THEIR FEELINGS, and then, from the time of their abusive experience(s) onward, begin to display conscienceless or psychopathic behaviour. Girl On Fire I read Barbara's I AM NOT ASHAMED, and Barbara did not move back to her parents house in 1967 to stop drinking.... She actually said "I'd rather die than stop drinking", and her parents were big time alcoholics, and all it was at their home was one big drinking fest until Barbara was found dead on the bathroom floor a few short months later in 67... also not mentioned was her addiction to heroin as well
