Ghosts of the Ghetto (Białystok, 1943) was composed by Miriam Waks, Nathan Waks, and Sam Waks in commemoration of the liquidation of the Bialystok ghetto during World War II and has been released publicly to coincide with Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day). The track references two prominent Bialystok musical personalities – tango composer Zygmunt Białostocki, and acclaimed opera singer Rosa Raisa, who often closed her recitals with the Yiddish piece Eli Eli (My God, why hast Thou forsaken me). The featured version of Eli Eli was recorded live in an 18th century French church by Miriam & Nathan Waks (vocals and cello).
The piece utilizes elements of classical, tango, and electronic sound design to create a vividly rendered sonic and visual landscape. A dark, and at times harrowing musical exploration of the atrocities of the holocaust, Ghosts of the Ghetto (Białystok, 1943) is ultimately a poignant reflection on the effects that blind prejudice and warfare have on the people and world we live in.

Bialystok ist die Hauptstadt der polnischen Woiwodschaft Podlachien. Zu Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs kam die Stadt gemäß der Vereinbarungen des Hitler-Stalin-Pakts zur Sowjetunion. 1941 wurde das Gebiet im Zuge des Ostfeldzuges von der Wehrmacht besetzt.
Im gleichen Jahr brannten die Nationalsozialisten die Große Synagoge von Bialystok nieder und errichteten das Ghetto Bialystok. Die meisten jüdischen Opfer wurden ins KZ Treblinka sowie nach Auschwitz zur Vernichtung transportiert.
Ein 16-mm-Privatfilm aus dem Jahre 1941, den wir aktuell für unser Archiv erwerben konnten, hält auf ca. 18 Minuten Szenen aus Bialystok fest.

Lillian (Lilka) Bielski (nee Ticktin) was born in Bialystok, Poland. She grew up in a privileged home with one older brother and attended Jewish schools.
Lillian's mother died prior to war and her father remarried. Together with her father and stepmother she was forced to live in the ghetto in Lida, Belarus. However, they later escaped to woods to join the Bielski Otriad, a Jewish partisan group. The group was led by Tuvia Bielski.
During the time they were hiding in the woods, Lillian married Tuvia. The Bielski Otriad remained in the woods until they were liberated by the Russians in the summer of 1944. 1250 otriad members survived.
After perilous journey to Romania, Lillian and Tuvia emigrated to Israel. They arrived in the United States in 1956.

The Jewish Ghetto in Białystok was a World War II ghetto set up by Nazi Germany between July 26 and early August 1941 in the new capital of Bezirk Bialystok district of German-occupied Poland. About 50,000 Jews from the vicinity of Białystok and the surrounding region were herded into a small area of the city. The ghetto was split in two by the Biala River running through it (see map). Most inmates were put to work in the forced-labor enterprises, primarily in large textile factories established within its boundaries. The ghetto was liquidated in November 1943 as soon as the courageous Białystok Ghetto Uprising was extinguished. All its inhabitants were either killed locally or transported in cattle trucks to the Majdanek and Treblinka extermination camp.
The city of Białystok was overrun by the Wehrmacht on September 15, 1939, and a week later ceded to the invading Red Army in accordance with Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact. On September 27, 1939, it was annexed by the Soviet Union following mock elections. According to the terms of the German-Soviet Pact signed earlier in Moscow, Białystok remained in Soviet hands until June 1941, assigned to the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic. Thousands of Jews flocked to the city from German-occupied Poland. Mass deportations to Siberia by the NKVD followed.

Ghosts of the Ghetto (Białystok, 1943) was composed by Miriam Waks, Nathan Waks, and Sam Waks in commemoration of the liquidation of the Bialystok ghetto during World War II and has been released publicly to coincide with Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day). The track references two prominent Bialystok musical personalities – tango composer Zygmunt Białostocki, and acclaimed opera singer Rosa Raisa, who often closed her recitals with the Yiddish piece Eli Eli (My God, why hast Thou forsaken me). The featured version of Eli Eli was recorded live in an 18th century French church by Miriam & Nathan Waks (vocals and cello).
The piece utilizes elements of classical, tango, and electronic sound design to create a vividly rendered sonic and visual landscape. A dark, and at times harrowing musical exploration of the atrocities of the holocaust, Ghosts of the Ghetto (Białystok, 1943) is ultimately a poignant reflection on the effects that blind prejudice and warfare have on the people and world we live in.

Bialystok ist die Hauptstadt der polnischen Woiwodschaft Podlachien. Zu Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs kam die Stadt gemäß der Vereinbarungen des Hitler-Stalin-Pakts zur Sowjetunion. 1941 wurde das Gebiet im Zuge des Ostfeldzuges von der Wehrmacht besetzt.
Im gleichen Jahr brannten die Nationalsozialisten die Große Synagoge von Bialystok nieder und errichteten das Ghetto Bialystok. Die meisten jüdischen Opfer wurden ins KZ Treblinka sowie nach Auschwitz zur Vernichtung transportiert.
Ein 16-mm-Privatfilm aus dem Jahre 1941, den wir aktuell für unser Archiv erwerben konnten, hält auf ca. 18 Minuten Szenen aus Bialystok fest.

Lillian (Lilka) Bielski (nee Ticktin) was born in Bialystok, Poland. She grew up in a privileged home with one older brother and attended Jewish schools.
Lillian's mother died prior to war and her father remarried. Together with her father and stepmother she was forced to live in the ghetto in Lida, Belarus. However, they later escaped to woods to join the Bielski Otriad, a Jewish partisan group. The group was led by Tuvia Bielski.
During the time they were hiding in the woods, Lillian married Tuvia. The Bielski Otriad remained in the woods until they were liberated by the Russians in the summer of 1944. 1250 otriad members survived.
After perilous journey to Romania, Lillian and Tuvia emigrated to Israel. They arrived in the United States in 1956.
