LitPol, a 500-megawatt, “back-to-back” high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link, interconnects the power grids of Lithuania and Poland. This interconnection enables electricity to be traded between the two countries, strengthening and securing the power supply in the whole region.
Delivered by ABB, the leading power and automation group, this project contributes to the EU’s Baltic Ring power initiative. The initiative’s goal is to create a cross-national grid between nine countries around the Baltic Sea - Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Latvia. With the completion of the LitPol link, all these states are now joined, just one of 16 highly sophisticated HVDC projects ABB has been involved in in this region.

The US is planning to deploy a first batch of heavy military equipment to Latvia as soon as next year. The Baltic state's Defence Minister Raymonds Bergmanis said few details about the deal were available now. However, he said discussions were being coordinated with neighbours Lithuania and Estonia. Since the end of the Cold War, the Baltic States of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia have made tremendous political, economic, and military strides. Consciously deciding to align themselves with the West, all three joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) security alliance in 2004. Although small in size and population, the Baltic States have become beacons of hope in an increasingly insecure corner of Europe. Globally, they have also contributed to military and peacekeeping operations in places like Iraq, the Balkans, the Horn of Africa, and Afghanistan. As the security picture in the Baltic region continues to evolve, how does the legacy of the Cold War impact today's security challenges in the region? What new security threats are emerging for countries like Latvia? How are the Baltics working with each other, the United States, and their NATO allies to address regional security challenges?

This roundtable seminar will discuss energy security in Northern Europe and the Balticum, the effects by the Ukraine conflict and how the new European Energy Union will impact energy security efforts.
The EU’s work with their new EU Global Strategy on Foreign and Security Policy is ongoing. An important dimension of this strategy concerns energy and energy security. After the 2004 EU enlargement, the political and institutional / regulatory landscape of the Baltic region changed with respect to energy and energy security. In addition, the armed conflict in Ukraine has put the issue of energy security and security in general very high on the European political agenda. How does the regional distribution of energy resources and energy policies contribute to altering the level of energy security in the whole region and in particular countries? How do actors address energy security concerns by cooperative policies, in particular, EU wide and sub-regional (Nordic, Baltic) coordination measures aimed at managing energy interdependencies and increasing energy security? How will the new European Energy Union impact energy security efforts?

Since the end of the Cold War, the Baltic States of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia have made tremendous political, economic, and military strides. Consciously deciding to align themselves with the West, all three joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) security alliance in 2004. Although small in size and population, the Baltic States have become beacons of hope in an increasingly insecure corner of Europe. Globally, they have also contributed to military and peacekeeping operations in places like Iraq, the Balkans, the Horn of Africa, and Afghanistan. As the security picture in the Baltic region continues to evolve, how does the legacy of the Cold War impact today's security challenges in the region? What new security threats are emerging for countries like Latvia? How are the Baltics working with each other, the United States, and their NATO allies to address regional security challenges?

This roundtable seminar will discuss energy security in Northern Europe and the Balticum, the effects by the Ukraine conflict and how the new European Energy Union will impact energy security efforts.
The EU’s work with their new EU Global Strategy on Foreign and Security Policy is ongoing. An important dimension of this strategy concerns energy and energy security. After the 2004 EU enlargement, the political and institutional / regulatory landscape of the Baltic region changed with respect to energy and energy security. In addition, the armed conflict in Ukraine has put the issue of energy security and security in general very high on the European political agenda. How does the regional distribution of energy resources and energy policies contribute to altering the level of energy security in the whole region and in particular countries? How do actors address energy security concerns by cooperative policies, in particular, EU wide and sub-regional (Nordic, Baltic) coordination measures aimed at managing energy interdependencies and increasing energy security?
