The Wiener Library for the Study of the Holocaust and Genocide is the world's oldest institution devoted to the study of the Holocaust, its causes and legacies. Founded in 1933 as an information bureau that informed Jewish communities and governments worldwide about the persecution of the Jews under the Nazis, it was transformed into a research institute and public access library after the end of World War II. The official name of the institution is "The Wiener Library for the Study of the Holocaust and Genocide" and is now situated in Russell Square, London.
Alfred Wiener, a German Jew who worked for the Centralverein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens (Central Association of German Citizens of Jewish Faith), a Jewish civil rights group, spent years documenting the rise of antisemitism. He collected books, photographs, letters, magazines and other materials, including school primers and children's games, recording the spread of Nazi propaganda and its racist doctrines.
Annelies Marie Frank (German pronunciation: [ʔanəliːs maˈʁiː ˈʔanə ˈfʁaŋk]; Dutch pronunciation: [ʔɑnəˈlis maːˈri ˈʔɑnə ˈfrɑŋk]; 12 June 1929 – February or March 1945) was a German-born diarist and writer. She is one of the most discussed Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Her diary, The Diary of a Young Girl, which documents her life in hiding during the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II, is one of the world's most widely known books and has been the basis for several plays and films.
Born in the city of Frankfurt, Germany, she lived most of her life in or near Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Born a German national, Frank lost her citizenship in 1941 and thus became stateless. The Frank family moved from Germany to Amsterdam in the early 1930s when the Nazis gained control over Germany. By May 1940, they were trapped in Amsterdam by the German occupation of the Netherlands. As persecutions of the Jewish population increased in July 1942, the family went into hiding in some concealed rooms behind a bookcase in the building where Anne's father worked. In August 1944, the group was betrayed and transported to concentration camps. Anne and her sister, Margot, were eventually transferred to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where they allegedly died (probably of typhus) in February or March 1945, just weeks before the camp was liberated in April.
In March 2014, volunteer and media student Gabrielle Deimeke (https://vimeo.com/user25706690) made a film about the Wiener Library and the 'Match a Million' campaign. Our Learning and Engagement Manager, Toby, features in the film explaining more about our work.
We're taking part in Anne Frank Trust and Penguin Random House's campaign to mark the 70th anniversary of the death of Anne Frank. http://www.inyourpocket.com Vienna In Your Pocket's Stefan Bauer tours the Hofburg, one of Vienna's main sites. Home to the Habsburg monarchy for more than six centuries, the ten major buildings comprising the Hofburg complex represent the splendour and influence of what was once the mightiest empire in Europe. While this has been the site of countless decisive historical events, the sweeping arcaded façade of the Neue Burg earned worldwide notoriety in April of 1938, when Adolf Hitler spoke to a crowd of 200,000 people from its central balcony. Nearly every Austrian monarch has left his (or her) fingerprint on the layout of this palace, resulting in a stylistic mishmash and a wide array of museums. I'm back from my wonderful trip through Austria, Germany, and Switzerland with my family. This is my first time documenting a trip through video, and while I did have a few hiccups along the way, I'm fairly happy with the way it came out-- even with the blurriness and camera-shake. I did forget to hand over the camera on occasion, so it's a bit like Where's Waldo for me in these travel vlogs. My voice is the only thing that makes an appearance in this one :) I hope you enjoy a look at my trip! I will be posting additional photos and some thoughts about the trip on my blog in the near future. PS - I do call this a vlog, but I'm SOOO not into the walk-and-talk/narration style of vlogging (it would distract me too much from the experience). Sorry not sorry. So! If you have any questions abou...
