"The left is distracted on identity politics, economic inequality is just one small issue among many". "Obama is the symbol, heralded as monumental change but structurally nothing changed"
Clip from Francis Fukuyama in conversation with David Runciman - Democracy: Even the Best Ideas Can Fail.
Runciman agrees with Fukuyama that in the realm of ideas liberal democracy doesn’t have any real competitors. But that doesn’t mean it’s the only option, he believes, and even the best ideas can fail. Take the Arab Spring where democratic hopes have largely come to nothing. While Fukuyama argues that we should consider the long view – it’s easy to forget that the European revolutions of 1848 took 70 years to consolidate – Runciman worries that we may not have enough time for the long view in a fast-changing world.
Is religion becoming the new politics? How will the technological revolution continue to impact our politics? And in the West are we in danger of becoming complacent about the challenges to democracy that we face?

George Galloway highlights that Europe is in a state of economic breakdown and the position of Left wing politics in countries such as Greece who have suffered severe economic collapse.
Filmed on October 15th 2012.
George Galloway's full address: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3i8p49ODBu4
ABOUT GEORGE GALLOWAY:
Few contemporary politicians have attracted as much controversy as George Galloway. A Labour MP from 1987 to 2003, he was an outspoken critic of the policies of Tony Blair and New Labour, in particular the decision to invade Iraq. Fiery comments such as "the best thing British troops can do is to refuse to obey illegal orders" saw Galloway expelled from the Labour Party. But Galloway returned to the political fray by founding the Respect Party and winning Bethnal Green and Bow in the 2005 General Election. Mr Galloway re-entered Parliament in this March as MP for Bradford West and has recently provoked controversy and criticism with his comments on the rape charges against Wikileaks' Julian Assange.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. It has been established for 189 years, aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

Jamie Whyte argues that the Left is inclined towards totalitarianism and relies on micro management to attain its goals. One such example is subsidising obesity by providing us with the NHS, then taxing processed food to combat the problem. Do you agree? Is obesity a leftwing problem? Is there a future beyond micro management?

Ultra-nationalist political parties scored unprecedented victories at the European elections, making the rise of the far-right in Europe impossible to ignore. Many of these groups, some of which are openly neo-Nazi, are gaining strength everywhere.
In Sweden, there's been a sharp rise in political violence in the country, with crimes carried out by radical groups making headlines. However, what's unusual is that one of the most violent extremist organizations in Sweden aligns itself not with Nazism and the far-right, but with anti-fascism and the far-left.
Known as the Revolutionary Front, this group of militant socialists aim to crush fascism by any means necessary. VICE News set out to try and find the Revolutionary Front, and to understand the unlikely rise of the militant far-left in Sweden.

In Berlins traditional working class neighborhoods,left-wing extremist violence is on the rise. Young professionals are increasingly moving into these neighborhoods, causing the rents to rise and pushing out many of the old tenants. This is a thorn in the eye of the radical left wingers who are reacting by damaging new buildings and setting cars on fire. Unable to stop the violence, the police are now demanding a harder tack from politicians.

In every movement there is a wide spectrum of activist thought and action. From those who are content to make some "incremental change" for the "better" to those who realize that if the entire tree is diseased, it can only bear tainted fruit.
Until the leadership was hunted down and "removed" by the powers that be, the "Wobblies", the International Workers of the World, were the engine of the Labor Movement of the early 20th century. This wonderful song epitomizes the humor and courage of its author, Joe Hill and the rest of us, all courageous heroes of the Working Class.

The NEA (National Education Assocation) probably doesn't realize that a lot of their members are Republicans and may not appreciate them using member dues for partisan left-wing causes. However, that's the case. The NEA funds, aids and abets left-wing causes such as ACORN, the United Nations and advocates for socialized medicine--akin to the failed models in the UK and single-payer Canada.
Imagine the uproar if the GOP did the same thing and was funding the NRA?

"If I can't dance, I don't want to be part of your revolution." This paraphrase of famous Anarchist, Author Emma Goldman's retort when accused of "hurting the cause" by having too much fun effectively sums up the heart of this show.
Over the years, major social and political Movements have been strengthened by music and song. Where would the Civil Rights Movement have been without "We Shall Overcome"? Where would the Anti-Vietnam war Movement have been without "Masters of War" and "Fixin' to Die Rag"? Where would the Labor Movement have been without "Solidarity Forever" or "The Internationale"?
If you haven't been paying attention, the major social and political movements of today are also being supported and enhanced by great political songs.
Within the constraints of overbearing, corporate "copyright" laws, each episode will examine a great left-wing protest/political song. We will trace each song's history, its impact on the time that produced it and its relevance to today.

Breaking Gulf News
Athens, Greece: Alexis Tsipras is set to receive the formal mandate later Monday to form a Greek government for the second time, after his left-wing Syriza party unexpectedly won a decisive victory in early national elections.
Syriza’s victory in Sunday’s election marks a personal triumph for Tsipras, who served as prime minister between January and August — a tumultuous period that saw Greece’s future in the 19-country Eurozone come under real threat and strict banking controls imposed.
At 41, Tsipras dominates Greek politics despite a major policy U-turn that saw him go against the anti-austerity platform that swept him to power in elections in January in return for a multibillion bailout that keeps Greece in the Eurozone.

David grew up in a Conservative Jewish family in the Bronx. By the age of 15 he had lost his faith. He became involved in the left wing politics of the 1960's. His first conversion was from liberal to conservative politics and becoming pro-life. For the children, David and his gentile wife began to attend a Baptist church, but David still didn't believe in God. A pro-life friend suggested that he begin visiting the Blessed Sacrament and to pray the doubter's prayer. After God's intervention, David's heart was converted. He repented accepted Christ and was baptized in the Baptist church. About four weeks later he realized he must become a Catholic. David is the President of the Association of Hebrew Catholics. Spanish/Nat
Hundreds of people marched on Thursday in protest at bi-party talks in Nicaragua between traditional rivals, the ruling liberals and the left wing ex-rebel Sandinistas.
The talks are part of a Liberal Sandinista alliance seen by many as politically corrupt and a blatant bid for a broader vote in the next presidential elections.
A deal struck between Nicaragua's two leading political parties was a blow to democracy according to hundreds in protest on Thursday.
President Arnoldo Aleman's ruling Liberal Party is in talks with ex-rebels, the Sandinistas, who now make up the so-called F-M-L-N party.
The two are believed to be forming a coalition for the sake of votes in the next presidential election.
To do so, they would have to bury a hatchet that both party leaders have often wielded against the other.
Public reaction was one of outrage.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"The march is to say to the parties signing the pact (Pactistas) that we Nicaraguans don't want a pact. What we want are solutions to the problems of poverty, unemployment, to the misery of the immigrants. We want opportunities for the young, but not a pact."
SUPER CAPTION: Maria Tellez, former leader of Sandinista Renewal Party
Also in the procession was the stepdaughter of Daniel Ortega, the Sandinista leader and former president himself.
She has fought a bitter public fight against her father with allegations she first made public last year, that he had sexually abused her as a girl and young woman.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"I am speaking out with dignity as many other women are, because we believe that sexual abuse is a punishable crime and that it cannot be something ignored when it comes to the responsibility of maintaining a situation that is not undefined and which does not perpetuate impunity."
SUPER CAPTION: Zoilamerica Narvaez, step-daughter of Daniel Ortega
Others in the march included several protesting not only at the political pact between two former rivals but at the broader issue of poverty and repression over decades.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"The march of the chains and the cross symbolises more than 170 years of repression carried out by successive governments that we have had ever since we became a republic."
SUPER CAPTION: Ermis Morales, demonstrator
Banners along the procession were clear in their denunciation of Nicaragua's two best known political figures.
The two who have fought with words appear to have declared a political truce for the time being.
It may be an opportunist move but, for now, it has earned them harsh criticism and branded them with the motif of personal greed.

Another strong showing by the right in northern Europe: the Danish People's Party is celebrating its victorious result in legislative elections, with 21% of the votes.
This makes the anti-immigration People's Party (DPP) Denmark's second-largest political party, and the leading partner in the right wing bloc -- dislodging the left from government.
Described by detractors as populist or even far right, the DPP confirms an anti-immigration trend in the Nordic countries.

Dr. Martin Sherman explains the Limousine Theory of Israeli Politics
Time and time again "right" wing parties (or rather parties that promote a relatively hawkish agenda) win elections in Israel, but soon after taking office they adopt the failed policies of the dovish "left-wing" predecessors.
On October 7, 2013, at the Luxe Sunset Boulevard Hotel in Los Angeles, Dr. Martin Sherman explained The Limousine Theory as the "paradox of politics" in Israel where, repea

Esotericism, Censorship, and Politics Left and Right
In light of revelations that the British government has asked internet service providers to block "esoteric material", we discuss what esotericism is, how it has become a part of radical Left- and Right-wing politics, and esoteric interpretation and religion.

Talk to Al Jazeera - Jeremy Corbyn: You can't defeat ISIL just with bombs
At 66 years old Jeremy Corbyn isn't exactly the youngest politician in Britain. But his election as leader of the Labour Party and head of the opposition has injected a huge amount of energy into UK politics.
As he campaigned for his party leadership, thousands of people turned up to hear him across the country.
Massive lines of supporters queuing up to listen to the veteran left-wing politician

Malda violence: Is Mamata Banerjee playing minority politics?
Tonight on Left, Right & Centre : As BJP leaders are turned away from visiting Malda in West Bengal which was marred with violence after a mob went on the rampage last week, the party today accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of communal politics. Her party, the Trinamool Congress, however hit back saying that Malda was exaggerated by the right wing on social media. Is Ms Banerjee playing minor

This keynote entitled "Left Politics and Left Legal Theory - Strange Bedfellows?" was part of the The Past and Future of the Legal Left: Celebrating Duncan Kennedy's Scholarship conference which tool place at SOAS, University of London on 22 May 2014.
Speaker: Duncan Kennedy, Carter Professor of General Jurisprudence, Harvard Law School
Moderator: Professor Matthew Craven, Dean, Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, SOAS
Discussant: Professor Costas Douzinas, School of Law, Birkbeck
This conference honored Professor Duncan Kennedy, one of the most influential legal theorists and left critics of our time.
After teaching for more than four decades at Harvard Law School, Professor Kennedy announced his intention to retire. Kennedy's brilliant contributions have challenged our thinking on law and its role in society.
He never shied away from controversy and engaged in a variety of academic and political debates. Admirably, he was able to commit simultaneously to both an intellectual critique and left-wing politics, without the political stifling critique or the latter undermining the political.
In addition, Professor Kennedy was not content with offering critique and deconstruction, as some of his writings included highly specific and programmatic proposals.

http://www.GlennBecksBookList.com -- For The Book Go To http://www.bit.ly/LeviathanBook At a time when the national political debate is about inequality and fairness, bestselling author David Horowitz and coauthor Jacob Laksin have written an unsettling book about the distribution of power in America. Thoroughly researched and amply documented, The New Leviathan overturns the conventional wisdom about which end of the political spectrum represents the rich and powerful, and which represents the people.
The Democratic Party presents itself to the electorate as the party of working families and the poor. In the 2000 election campaign, Democrat Al Gore ran on the slogan "The People vs. the Powerful," while President Obama describes himself as a "grassroots organizer" and a spokesman for "fairness" and "progressive change." Such is the world of political myth. In reality, the Democrats and the Obama progressives represent the richest and most powerful political machine in American history. Backed by a near trillion-dollar treasury in America's oldest and largest tax-exempt foundations, progressives outspend conservatives by a factor of seven to one.
In The New Leviathan, David Horowitz and Jacob Laksin examine this growing financial power of left-wing organizations and politicians. They show how left-wing foundations underwrote the political career of Barack Obama and how massive funding advantages for progressive proposals have disenfranchised American voters and shifted the national policy debate dramatically to the left. The New Leviathan draws connections between the Obama administration and progressive organizations from labor unions to media outlets to nonprofits to political groups, and shows how on key policy fronts—national security, immigration, citizenship, environment, and health care—the sheer force of left-wing financial resources has reconfigured the nation's political agenda. Slavoj Zizek examines the right & left in american Politics.
The left-right political spectrum is a system of classifying political positions, ideologies and parties. Left-wing politics and right-wing politics are often presented as opposed, although a particular individual or group may take a left-wing stance on one matter and a right-wing stance on another. In France, where the terms originated, the Left has been called "the party of movement" and the Right "the party of order." The intermediate stance is called centrism and a person with such a position is a moderate.
There is general agreement that the Left includes: progressives, communists, social-liberals, greens, social-democrats, socialists, democratic-socialists, left-libertarians, secularists, feminists, autonomists, anti-imperialists, anti-capitalists, and anarchists.

Although Atwood's politics are commonly described as being left-wing, she has indicated in interviews that she considers herself a Red Tory in the historical sense of the term. Atwood and her partner Graeme Gibson are members of the Green Party of Canada (GPC) and strong supporters of GPC leader Elizabeth May. Atwood has strong views on environmental issues, and she and her partner are the joint honorary presidents of the Rare Bird Club within BirdLife International. She has been chair of the Writers' Union of Canada and president of PEN Canada, and is currently a vice president of PEN International. In the 2008 federal election she attended a rally for the Bloc Québécois, a Quebec separatist party, because of her support for their position on the arts, and stated that she would vote for the party if she lived in Quebec. In a Globe and Mail editorial, she urged Canadians to vote for any other party to stop a Conservative majority.
During the debate in 1987 over a free trade agreement between Canada and the United States, Atwood spoke out against the deal, and wrote an essay opposing the agreement.[31]
Atwood celebrated her 70th birthday at a gala dinner at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, marking the final stop of her international tour to promote The Year of the Flood. She stated that she had chosen to attend the event because the city has been home to one of Canada's most ambitious environmental reclamation programs: "When people ask if there's hope (for the environment), I say, if Sudbury can do it, so can you. Having been a symbol of desolation, it's become a symbol of hope."[32]
Atwood's reputed left wing attitudes may have been changing in recent times. Despite calls for a boycott by Gazan students, Atwood visited Israel and accepted the $1,000,000 Dan David Prize along with Indian author Amitav Ghosh at Tel Aviv University in May 2010.[33] Atwood commented that "we don't do cultural boycotts."[34] She is a supporter of convicted felon Conrad Black in his attempts to remain a member of the Order of Canada.[35]
In the Wake of the Flood, a documentary film by Canadian director Ron Mann released in October 2010, followed Atwood on the unusual book tour for her novel The Year of the Flood. During this innovative book tour, Atwood created a theatrical version of her novel, with performers borrowed from the local areas she was visiting. The documentary is described as "a fly-on-the-wall film vérité."[36]
Since February 2013, Atwood made it clear via Twitter that she strongly opposed the University of Toronto putting in an artificial turf field and hinted that she might write the university out of her will if it proceeded with the plan. This was not the first time she had openly challenged the university.

In the 1980s in Britain, Rushdie was a supporter of the Labour Party and championed measures to end racial discrimination and alienation of immigrant youth and racial minorities.
Rushdie supported the 1999 NATO bombing of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, leading the leftist Tariq Ali to label Rushdie and other "warrior writers" as "the belligerati'".[69] He was supportive of the US-led campaign to remove the Taliban in Afghanistan, which began in 2001, but was a vocal critic of the 2003 war in Iraq. He has stated that while there was a "case to be made for the removal of Saddam Hussein", US unilateral military intervention was unjustifiable.[70]
In the wake of the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy in March 2006—which many considered an echo of the death threats and fatwā that followed publication of The Satanic Verses in 1989—Rushdie signed the manifesto Together Facing the New Totalitarianism, a statement warning of the dangers of religious extremism. The Manifesto was published in the left-leaning French weekly Charlie Hebdo in March 2006.[71]
In 2006, Rushdie stated that he supported comments by the then-Leader of the House of Commons Jack Straw, who criticised the wearing of the niqab (a veil that covers all of the face except the eyes). Rushdie stated that his three sisters would never wear the veil. He said, "I think the battle against the veil has been a long and continuing battle against the limitation of women, so in that sense I'm completely on Straw's side."[72]
Critic Terry Eagleton, a former admirer of Rushdie's work, attacked him for his positions, saying he "cheered on the Pentagon's criminal ventures in Iraq and Afghanistan".[73] Eagleton subsequently apologised for having misrepresented Rushdie's views.

On this episode of The Martinez Perspective, host Brandon Martinez is joined by independent writer and researcher from Sweden, Lasse Wilhelmson.
Why do so few people know about the true histories of Bolshevism and Zionism? Why is there so little discussion of these movements, despite their integral role in shaping the 20th and 21st centuries?
Could it be that both movements have Jewish origins and therefore receive soft treatment from historians, academics and the media?
The destructive and murderous legacy of Bolshevism in Russia is seldom brought to the fore in mainstream discourse, yet we are fed a constant stream of messages and images about what happened to Jews during the Second World War.
Marxists and communists today have an extreme intolerance towards WW2 and holocaust revisionism. "How dare you question what the winners have told us about WW2" the communists say. Yet, these same ideologues are extreme revisionists when it comes to the history of the Soviet Union and other communist states. Most of them openly deny the millions of victims of Lenin, Stalin and Mao. Some even deny the Gulag existed in the USSR and call the Holodomor -- Stalin's engineered Ukrainian famine genocide -- a myth!
Wilhelmson discusses all of these issues from a unique insider's perspective. In his youth he was an avowed Marxist and comes from a Jewish background. He was a political activist for years and took part in various left-wing causes. After doing his own research, Wilhelmson abandoned both Marxism and Jewish identity, and has become an outspoken critic of Israel and Zionist power.
Martinez and Wilhelmson delve into the hypocrisies of left-wing ideologues and much more on the show.

wn.com/The Martinez Perspective Ep. 6 Jewish Identity Politics Hidden History Of Bolshevism And Zionism

This week The Agenda's look at political correctness. First, voices ranging from writer Jonathan Chait to comedian Patton Oswalt are saying they, as liberals, have a problem with the state of political correctness. Are recent efforts by "social justice warriors" to change the way we think about race and gender the logical extension of left-wing ideals of justice and fairness, or is it an attempt to police speech? Is a left-wing divide growing over political correctness?

Guatemala in the 1980s: Guatemalan Civil War, Politics, Economics, and Democracy (1990)

The Guatemalan Civil War ran from 1960 to 1996. It was mostly fought between the government of Guatemala and various leftist rebel groups supported chiefly by ethnic Mayan indigenous people and Ladino peasants, who together make up the rural poor. The government forces of Guatemala have been condemned for committing genocide against the Mayan population of Guatemala during the civil war and for widespread human rights violations against civilians.
After some leftist governments during the 1940s, conservative governments and anti-communist regimes gained power during the 1950s. Continuing social discontent gave rise in the 1960s to a series of armed leftist groups emerging from the large poor classes of indigenous and peasants. In 1966 for the first time, the Guatemalan security forces used forced disappearances against the opposition, with the number of disappeared reaching into the tens of thousands by the end of the war. In 1970 the first of many military rulers representing the Institutional Democratic Party took office, and repression increased. During the 1980s, the Guatemalan military assumed almost absolute government power for five years. It had successfully infiltrated and eliminated enemies in every socio-political institution of the nation, including the political, social, and intellectual classes. In the final stage of the civil war, the military developed a parallel, semi-visible, low profile but high-effect, control of Guatemala's national life.
The conflict consisted of both fighting between the government's forces and rebel groups, as well as a large-scale campaign of one-sided violence by the government against the Guatemalan civilian population, including indigenous activists, suspected government opponents, returning refugees, critical academics and students, left-leaning politicians, trade unionists, journalists, and street children.
Up to 200,000 people died or went missing during the war, including 40,000 to 50,000 people who were "disappeared". In 2009 Guatemalan courts sentenced Felipe Cusanero as the first person convicted of the crime of ordering forced disappearances. In 2013 the former dictator Rios Montt was found guilty of genocide for the killing of more than 1,700 indigenous Ixil Mayans during his 1982-83 rule. He was the first former head of state to be tried for genocide by his country's judicial system.
In 1944, the "October Revolutionaries" took control of the government. They instituted liberal economic reform, benefiting and politically strengthening the civil and labor rights of the urban working class and the peasants. Elsewhere, a group of leftist students, professionals, and liberal-democratic government coalitions were led by Juan José Arévalo and Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán. Decree 900, passed in 1952, ordered the redistribution of fallow land on large estates, threatening the interests of the landowning elite.
As a consequence, the U.S. government ordered the Central Intelligence Agency to launch Operation PBSUCCESS (1953--54) and halt Guatemala's "communist revolt", as perceived by the corporate fruit companies such as United Fruit and the U.S. State Department. The CIA chose right-wing Guatemalan Army Colonel Carlos Castillo Armas to lead an "insurrection" in the 1954 Guatemalan coup d'état. Upon deposing the Árbenz Guzmán government, Castillo Armas began to dissolve a decade of social and economic reform and legislative progress, and banned labor unions and left-wing political parties, a disfranchisement that radicalized left-wing Guatemalans.
A series of military coups d'état followed, featuring fraudulent elections in which only military personnel were candidates. Aggravating the general poverty and political repression motivating the civil war was the widespread socio-economic discrimination and racism practiced against the Guatemala's indigenous peoples, such as the Maya; many later fought in the civil war. Although the indigenous Guatemalans constitute more than half of the national populace, they were landless, having been dispossessed of their lands since colonial times. The landlord upper classes of the oligarchy, generally descendants of Spanish and other European immigrants to Guatemala, although often with some mestizo ancestry as well, controlled most of the land.

Martin Sherman explained The Limousine Theory as the "paradox of politics" in Israel where, repeatedly, the parties elected to power, not only discard the platform on which they were elected but act to implement the very policy rejected by their voters at the polls—despite the fact that it has be shown to a disastrous debacle.
To use an analogy from the world of sport, according to the Limousine Theory, the reasons for this detrimental phenomenon, which in itself is comprises a grave distortion of the democratic process are not to be found flaws in the Israeli electoral system or the system of government (i.e. in the rules of the game); or in the personal defects of the elected politicians (i.e. the quality of the players).
Rather they are rooted in in the sociological structure of Israeli society—particularly the personal and professional priorities certain civil society elites (i.e. the topography of the playing field) .
By virtue of their un-elected positions of power and prestige, these elites have both the means and the motivation to impose on the elected incumbents the implementation of policies they were not elected to implement; or to prevent the implementation of policies they were elected to implement.
Dr. Martin Sherman served for seven years in operational capacities in the Israeli Defense establishment. He was a ministerial adviser to Yitzhak Shamir's government and lectured for 20 years at Tel Aviv University in Political Science, International Relations and Strategic Studies. He was the first academic director of the internationally renowned Herzliya Conference and is the author of two books and numerous articles and policy papers on a wide range of political, diplomatic and security issues. He was born in South Africa and has lived in Israel since 1971. Dr. Sherman is currently involved in an endeavor to establish an independent policy center --the Israel Institute of Strategic Studies.

Massive lines of supporters queuing up to listen to the veteran left-wing politician became a symbol of the new movement he has built.
But Corbyn isn't without critics, his opponents bill him as an activist who's policies are impossible to implement. He believes in re-nationalising Britain's rails, is a fervant campaigner against Nuclear weapons and wants to introduce new taxes on big businesses and the country's rich.
Corbyn has also stirred controversy with his perceived anti-monarchy beliefs. and his past support for Irish resistance groups.

wn.com/Talk To Al Jazeera Jeremy Corbyn You Can't Defeat ISIL Just With Bombs
At 66 years old Jeremy Corbyn isn't exactly the youngest politician in Britain. But his election as leader of the Labour Party and head of the opposition has injected a huge amount of energy into UK politics.
As he campaigned for his party leadership, thousands of people turned up to hear him across the country.
On this week's Talk to Al Jazeera, he explains what he would do to solve the current refugee crisis facing Europe, his view on ending the war in Syria, and the truth behind his relationship with Palestinian Resistance group Hamas.
