Sweden's mainstream parties head into March's snap election unloved by voters and short on seasoned leadership, raising the risk the far-right will increase its support and be able to force a shift in generous immigration policies. Center-left Prime Minister Stefan Lofven's need to call a new election two months into office underlines his weakness. His likely rival for the top political post - Moderate party economic spokeswoman Anna Kinberg Batra - will not even head her own party until January. The center-right and center-left lack fresh ideas - tax cuts are over but will not be reversed - and voters gave a thumbs down to both blocs in September's vote, handing the Sweden Democrats the balance of power.

For the last ten years Europe has been taking a turn towards right-wing extremism, both in terms of the growing popularity of far-right political parties and violent nationalistic and xenophobic attacks. For many Europeans the economic depression generated by the financial crisis and high levels of immigration, have led to a loss of confidence in left-leaning governments as well as claims of a loss of identity. Far-right parties across the Eurozone are fast gaining in support, establishing a stronghold in traditionally liberal Netherlands and Scandinavia. The presidential candidate of the French Front National party, Marine Le Pen, has already beaten Nikolas Sarkozy in her popularity with voters and now stands as likely winner in the 2012 elections.
As economies contract and jobs dry up, many-right wing parties are pointing the finger at Islam and immigration. The European Council on Foreign Relations has likened the Islamaphobic rhetoric of the right-wing political parties to the anti-Semitism of the 1920s and 30s. We are already witnessing an increase in violent ultra-right wing attacks, such as those committed in Norway last year when Anders Behring Breivik killed 77 people in attacks he claims were necessary for a 'civil war against Islam in Europe', and news reports from Germany of neo-Nazi killings of eight Turkish Immigrants. With the far-right politics so strongly focused on anti-Islamic sentiment, what is the future for Muslim communities in Europe if far-right parties continue to increase in popularity?

French politics: Hollande, Sarkozy and the 'Marmite effect'

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has re-launched his political career while the current President Francois Hollande’s approval rating has plummeted to 13 percent. Can Hollande last until his term expires in 2017? What's next for France, which is seeing a resurgence in the far right as it capitalises on the vacuum left by a Socialist party in disarray? VoR's Brendan Cole hosts a discussion.
George Bush wasn’t exactly a popular American president, but even his ratings would be the envy of France’s President Francois Hollande.
Just over one in 10 French people think he is doing an adequate job.
His Socialist government’s policies have been a failure. Economic growth in the first two years of his presidency has been only 0.8 per cent. Unemployment is even worse – it has swelled 15 percent to 3.3 million. Even his punitive tax on the super-rich did little more than lead to an exodus of showbiz stars and footballers. Catastrophic European parliamentary elections then ensued, with his Socialists winning roughly only half as many seats as the National Front.
So, maybe to take his mind off matters, he has undertaken a rather hawkish foreign policy, visiting Iraq this month and pledging military support to fight the Islamic State. A tough response to al-Qaeda in the Maghreb has signalled a no-nonsense approach that some say he hopes will draw attention away from domestic failings.
And speaking of his domestic failings, the country has been captivated by a less than flattering memoir called ‘Merci pour le moment’, by his former partner, Valerie Trierweiler, about her time as the former French first lady.
Meanwhile, the former President Nicolas Sarkozy has re-launched his political career with a rally near the city of Lille.
Correspondents said he was aiming to win back young voters there who had backed the far right National Front in May's European elections.
Can Hollande last until his term expires in 2017 and what next for this great nation which is seeing a resurgence in the far right as it capitalises on the vacuum left by a Socialist party in disarray?
To discuss this VoR’s Brendan Cole is joined by:
Patrick Marnham, who writes for the Spectatoron France and was former Paris correspondent of The Independent
Dr Nicholas Startin, lecturer in French and European Studies from Bath University
Bénédicte Paviot, an Anglo-French TV and radio journalist for France 24 based in London

The Cleanest Race: How North Koreans See Themselves and Why it Matters is a 2010 book by Brian Reynolds Myers. Based on a study of the propaganda produced in North Korea for internal consumption, Myers argues that the guiding ideology of North Korea is a race-based nationalism derived from Japanese fascism, rather than any form of Communism.
Brian Reynolds Myers was born in the United States and was educated on the graduate level in Germany.[1] He is an editor of The Atlantic magazine and the author of A Reader's Manifesto,[2] as well as of Han Sorya and North Korea Literature (1994), which was the only book in English about North Korean literature until Tatiana Gabroussenko's literary history Soldiers on the Cultural Front (2010). Myers has studied North Korea for twenty years and is fluent in Korean.[3] He holds an assistant professorship in international studies at Dongseo University in South Korea.[2]
For the book, Myers studied North Korean mass culture with reference to domestically published novels, films, and serials available at the Ministry of Unification in Seoul.[3][4] Myers claims his analysis differs from that of conventional North Korea watchers, because he focuses on internal Korean-language propaganda, rather than on Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) external broadcasts and English-language reports from South Korea.
The Cleanest Race is divided into two sections: the first covers North Korean history through its propaganda, from Korea under Japanese rule to the 2009 imprisonment of American journalists by North Korea.[6] The second section analyzes themes in the propaganda, including chapters such as "Mother Korea", Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Il, perceptions of foreigners, and South Korea.[5]
Techniques of propaganda analysis by Myers include translation of poems, discussion of metaphors and monumental architecture, and description of racist tropes.[6] The book also contains sixteen separate pages of color illustrations,[5] including reprints of posters that ethnically caricature Japanese and Americans[7] and which portray the late leaders Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il as maternal figures.[8]
The Cleanest Race argues that the ideology of the North Korean government's is founded on far-right politics rather far-left politics. It notes that the North Korean government is xenophobic and militaristic. It cites a report of a mob attack on Black Cuban diplomats and the forcing of female North Koreans to abort mixed children.[4][7] It says that the 2009 North Korean constitution omits all mention of Communism.[7] The author argues that Juche is not the leading ideology of North Korea. Rather, he surmises, it was designed in order to trick foreigners.[4]
The author says North Korea's government does not base its ideology on Marxism–Leninism or Neo-Confucianism. He instead links it to Japanese fascism.[9] He states that the government's racist criteria for national identity paints its genetically Korean citizens as innocent and morally virtuous (as opposed to foreigners) but militarily weak,[6] requiring Kim Il Sung's charismatic guidance and protection.[3] The author supposes that this may be a strategy by the government to decrease the amount of repression and surveillance needed to control that public.[3]
According to Myers, North Korean government propaganda portrays South Korea as a land polluted by foreign domination, particularly by the permanent presence of American troops. Anti-Americanism is the cornerstone of North Korean foreign policy.[4]
Similarly, internal propaganda within North Korea portrays American humanitarian efforts such as food aid as signs of American cowardice and make no distinction "between 'good' American workers and 'bad' American capitalists".[3] He laments that North Koreans openly flout the "dictates of an impure world" as inapplicable to the pure Korean race.

Recorded on 16 January 2013 in Old Theatre, Old Building.
How did American and British policymakers become so enamoured with free markets, deregulation, and limited government? Based on archival research and interviews with leading participants in the movement, Daniel Stedman Jones has traced the ascendancy of neoliberalism from the academy of interwar Europe to supremacy under Reagan and Thatcher and in the decades since. He contends that there was nothing inevitable about the victory of free-market politics. Far from being the story of the simple triumph of right-wing ideas, the neoliberal breakthrough was contingent on the economic crises of the 1970s and the acceptance of the need for new policies by the political left. In his lecture he will describe neoliberalism's road to power, beginning in interwar Europe, then shifting its centre of gravity after 1945 to the United States, especially to Chicago and Virginia, where it was developed into an uncompromising political message, communicated through a transatlantic network of think tanks, businessmen, politicians, and journalists held together by Friedrich Hayek and Milton Friedman. A discussion for anyone who wants to understand the history behind the Anglo-American love affair with the free market, as well as the origins of the current economic crisis.
Daniel Stedman Jones is a barrister in London. He was educated at the University of Oxford and at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a PhD in history. He has worked as a policy adviser for the New Opportunities Fund and as a researcher for Demos. His latest book is Masters of the Universe: Hayek, Friedman, and the Birth of Neoliberal Politics.
Mark Pennington is Professor of Public Policy and Political Economy, King's College, University of London, prior to which he spent eleven years at Queen Mary, University of London. He holds a PhD from the London School of Economics. Mark's work lies at the intersection of politics, philosophy and economics with a particular emphasis on the classical liberal tradition. His latest book, Robust Political Economy (2011: Cheltenham, Edward Elgar) examines challenges to classical liberalism derived from neo-classical economics, communitarian political theory and egalitarian ethics. From January 2013 Mark will be the European Editor of the Review of Austrian Economics.
Robert Skidelsky is Emeritus Professor of Political Economy at the University of Warwick. His three-volume biography of the economist John Maynard Keynes (1983, 1992, 2000) received numerous prizes, and he recently published Keynes: The Return of the Master.

FOR SUBTITLES TURN CAPTIONS (CC) ON.
One more episode of ''Duel'' talk show with Vladimir Zhirinovsky participating.
This time he is going against Iosif Raihelgauz, some movie and theater director I've never heard before. The subject of this show is: Michail Gorbachev, and the role he played, mainly in the collapse of the Soviet Union, but also about good and bad things he had done.
For Zhirinovsky, this subject is almost as painful as October Revolution of 1917. So, he is like usual using his style. I gotta say, that he have been on this show for so many times, his experience really counts. One of Raihelgauz's supporters made him angry, talking about things Zhirinovsky tired of hearing of, and when Zhirinovsky responds to him, you can see that his hands were actually shaking! Raihelgauz, on the other hand, seeing that he's losing, at one moment I think he was ready to start crying. But of course he is no match. I think Zhirinovsky even realized it and backed down a little.
The arbitrator was some historian that repeated everything twice for some reason. He reminded me Johny ''Two Times'' from ''Goodfellas'' - ''I'm gonna get the paper get the paper'' lol.
Well... And Soloviev as always in his style.
Oh, and keep your hand on ''Pause'' button. They often talk at the same time, so you might need a moment to read everything.
This show was aired live on 30/05/2013.
Enjoy!
Thanks for watching!

The National Front in France, Jobbik in Hungary, and Golden Dawn in Greece: Far-right parties seem to be gaining in popularity in Europe. How does hate continue to fester in a continent marred by the tragedies of WWII? And what does the rise of the political far-right mean for the future of Europe and the security of its many minorities? As TVO prepares to air the North American premiere of the documentary "Judgment in Hungary," The Agenda examines the rise of far-right, anti-immigrant political parties in Europe.

With a refugee crisis taking over Europe, German anti-Islamic group Pegida are on the rise. Advocating a strict asylum policy, their rallys have drawn increasingly big crowds. Can Germany diffuse the growing tension?
Since October 2014, every Monday, angry Islamaphobic rallies have been staged in Dresden in eastern Germany by a new grassroots organization called Pegida, or Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the West. One in five Germans today have a migration background, but one study has found that a shocking 57% of Germans now see Islam as a threat to life in Europe. "Sometimes I realise that people are afraid of me... even when I go to the shops or something, they are afraid of talking to me", says Sonia Zayed, a Muslim. Hate crimes against foreigners have also risen across the country. "The Pegida Movement really empowers the kind of people who are willing to use violence against migrants", explains civil rights activist Robert Kusche. Anti-Pegida protests are springing up across Germany, but has Pegida already inflicted harm on Germany's immigration policy?

I have been telling you all that I wanted Politics Done Right to be a virtually Donald Trump free zone. I could not hold to that wish. I could not hold to that hope or expectation.
Donald Trump has gained a traction that no one expected. Yet if one follows what is occurring around the world it should be no surprise After all, fear generally trumps hope. Even his name, Trump, so far fits the bill.
Today I want to engage us all in reality based thinking. With Latinos being one of the major whipping group that Donald Trump has chosen to make America’s scapegoat, I want to encourage and urge our Latino brothers and sisters to engage. A party that fears speaking out against those that would disparage any group is a party that must be excoriated by us all.
I will also be live on Periscope (Egberto Willies / @EgbertoWillies)
