"We have managed to increase production of cork on this farm since the beginning of the century from 20,000 hobarts - that's the measure for cork its 15 kilos - to 180,000 hobarts. We expect that in the near future in the next 10 years we can increase the production by 15%."

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Miguel Teles Branco, President of the Coruche Forestry Producers Association:
"It's an option for the manager to harvest at either nine or ten years because its a legal imposition (requirement) to strip the cork only at nine years. Like this it's perhaps a higher revenue if they took the cork at seven of eight years because our quality is all there, the thickness is sufficient to produce the stoppers."

"Here at Equipar we are worried with (about) the origin of the cork stoppers we produce so we can trace back each cork stopper to the forest area where it came from. The important of that is that if we have a problem we can go and look at all the steps we did in transformation in the forest to understand where the problem came from."

LEAD IN:
Portugal is the world's largest international producer and exporter of cork.
For centuries it's been a way of life, supporting entire families, towns and the economy of rural Alentejo province.
STORYLINE:
The cork cutters set out across the pale, dusty earth, their axes and clay water jugs slung over their shoulders.
They work in pairs, one man clambering up the tree while the other stays on the ground.
In unison they chop delicately into the dead bark, gauging its thickness by the sound resonating from the steel axe, and carve out slabs.
The spongy cork peels like an orange, with a crackling, tearing sound, baring the tree's bright yellow, living layer of bark.
Unlike most crops, cork does not grow from branches but within the tree trunk.

I have my suspicions
But how could you do that to mum?
How could you do this to her?
I knew you were trouble the way
They told me you were coming

Suicide suite - 05 - Leather and cork
A man plants a spruce of a cork oak on top of his younger brother ashes.
This is the first and last time
I will water you
This place of yours is dry as hell

A man plants a spruce of a cork oak on top of his younger brother ashes.
This is the first and last time
I will water you
This place of yours is dry as hell
Lucky as you are
It's gonna rain all summer
I couldn't care less
Why you did it
I have my suspicions
But how could you do that to mum?
How could you do this to her?
I knew you were trouble the way
They told me you were coming
You cried so much
And as I was ready
To put my pillow on your face
You smiled and laughed at me
And here you are
And here we are
There aren't any other trees around
You had to be the centre of attention, hadn't you?
A spruce of cork oak
This lock of blond hair
I found it inside the pocket of your leather jacket
Let me tie it to your branch
Goodbye little spruce
May the rain come
Cause I won't
I promise I will take good care of this jacket for you

Cork oak forests are unique. They occur naturally only in
seven Mediterranean countries (Algeria, France, Italy,
Morocco, Portugal, Spain, and Tunisia). These landscapes
are mainly prized as a source for cork stoppers, the
backbone of the cork economy. Cork is also used in the
building sector for insulation and flooring as well as in
several kinds of manufacture. However, the economic and
social significance of cork oak forests goes well beyond cork
production and industry. For more information please see:

We specialise in taking an idea from concept to shelf with very strong and reliable connections throughout the whole process.
http://sorcit.co.uk/
The environmentally friendly manufacturing solution with 1,001 uses. At Sorcit, we have helped many clients to develop their cork products for the market before successfully bringing them to the high street.
When most people think of cork, they probably think of wine stoppers, notice boards, or perhaps flooring. But cork is actually a highly versatile material with some unique properties that makes it perfect for use in a wide variety of products. At Sorcit, we have assisted in the manufacturing and the supplying of many cork products, including:
Craft items
Hot pads
Self-adhesive roll
Magnetic white boards
Rucksacks
Aprons
The Benefits of Using Cork
Environmentally friendly – Cork production is a lot more sustainable than other wood harvesting processes. Rather than felling the trees outright, cork production simply involves stripping the bark, before allowing the tree to continue to live and grow. Most cork oak trees live for around 300 years, and they’re harvested every 25 years.
On top of this, cork products and by-products are easy to recycle, and cork oak forests can be used to prevent desertification, and to house various endangered species. So if you want an environmentally friendly solution to your manufacturing needs, cork just might be exactly what you’re looking for.
Extremely Versatile – Cork is available in various grains, ranging from fine, to medium, to coarse, and each grain is ideally suited to a different set of applications. At Sorcit, we are experts when it comes to finding the right material for your projects and your products. Our certified manufacturers are masters at making the most of cork, and can make use of such techniques as printing, moulding, and texturing to create the perfect solution for your great idea. Unique Properties - Cork is highly elastic and nearly completely impermeable, which explains why it’s so often used in manufacturing bottle stoppers. However, these unique qualities also make cork ideally suited for use in more sophisticated and technologically advanced products. It’s naturally flame-retardant, which makes it perfect for use as insulation, and its low density makes it great for use in flotation devices. Finally, through mixing cork granules into concrete, you can create cement with a lower density, a lower thermal conductivity, and superior energy absorption. When designing your product, you might not have considered cork as a viable option. At Sorcit, we can help you to make the most of this remarkable material as part of our overall product design services.
For more information about the benefits of cork manufacturing, or to find out how Sorcit can help you to bring your product to the market, feel free to get in touch. Call us now on 0115 727 0499.

Today, we will learn about Temperate Forest. Major tropical forests, Temperate Forests and Boreal or taiga forest. There are four seasons in Temperate Forest summer, winter, fall and spring.
Temperate rain forests typically have heavy rainfall and dense humidity. The Tropical forest have a wide spread on the tropical region. In the temperate region, winters are mild and rainfall is moderate. The forests have trees, scrubs and bushes.
The main trees found in these forests are oak, ash, maple, birch, beech, poplar, elm and pine. Hardwood evergreen trees which are widely spaced and are found in the Mediterranean region are olive, cork, oak, and stone pine.
Trees and plants in deciduous forests have special adaptations to survive in this biome. In the summer their broad green leaves capture sunlight and help the trees make food through photosynthesis.
In the cold winter, deciduous trees and plants go into dormancy, kind of like sleep. The warmer spring days signal to the trees that they can grow new leaves again, and restart the cycle.
Animals in temperate deciduous forests have to adapt to changing seasons. Some animals hibernate or migrate during the winter to escape the cold. Animals who do not hibernate or migrate must have special adaptations to deal with higher exposure to predators in the winter.

A film from the COST ES1104 training school on 'Restoration in Mediterranean Drylands' in Lisbon and Madrid, 13 – 21 May 2015. The training school focused on the ecological restoration of drylands and agricultural land management in order to combat desertification through the establishment and management of vegetation. The field trip visited the Companhia das Lezírias, a state-run agriculture and forestry company located in an area of montado, the cork and holm oak agroforestry system of southern Portugal. The film includes an explanation of the use of lichens as indicators of air pollution, climate change and excessive nitrogen in the ecosystem, and a demonstration of how to carry out a biomonitoring study of lichens. Filmed and produced by Oliver Halsey.

Today’s forests are more dense and the sustainability of oak and hickory dominance is now threatened by an abundance of shade-tolerant and fire sensitive tree species such as red maple, sugar maple, and beech. Prescribed fire has been advocated to promote and sustain open-structured mixed-oak forests and the plants and animals that have adapted to these communities. However, long-term research on fire effects is lacking. Highlights from research initiated in 1995 to quantify the effects of frequent and periodic prescribed fires on oak forest ecosystems in southeastern Ohio will be presented.
