Apollo

Apollo (Attic, Ionic, and Homeric Greek: Ἀπόλλων, Apollōn (GEN Ἀπόλλωνος); Doric: Ἀπέλλων, Apellōn; Arcadocypriot: Ἀπείλων, Apeilōn; Aeolic: Ἄπλουν, Aploun; Latin: Apollō) is one of the most important and complex of the Olympian deities in classical Greek and Roman religion and Greek and Roman mythology. The ideal of the kouros (a beardless, athletic youth), Apollo has been variously recognized as a god of music, truth and prophecy, healing, the sun and light, plague, poetry, and more. Apollo is the son of Zeus and Leto, and has a twin sister, the chaste huntress Artemis. Apollo is known in Greek-influenced Etruscan mythology as Apulu.

As the patron of Delphi (Pythian Apollo), Apollo was an oracular god—the prophetic deity of the Delphic Oracle. Medicine and healing are associated with Apollo, whether through the god himself or mediated through his son Asclepius, yet Apollo was also seen as a god who could bring ill-health and deadly plague. Amongst the god's custodial charges, Apollo became associated with dominion over colonists, and as the patron defender of herds and flocks. As the leader of the Muses (Apollon Musegetes) and director of their choir, Apollo functioned as the patron god of music and poetry. Hermes created the lyre for him, and the instrument became a common attribute of Apollo. Hymns sung to Apollo were called paeans.

O2 Apollo Manchester

The O₂ Apollo Manchester (formerly Apollo Theatre, Manchester Apollo and Carling Apollo Manchester) is a concert venue located in Ardwick Green, Manchester, England. Locally known as The Apollo, it is a Grade II listed building, with a capacity of 3,500 (2,514 standing, 986 seats).

History

The building was designed by architects Peter Cummings, Alex Irvine and R. Gillespie Williams in a art deco style. The buildings frontage consists of a glazed white terracotta façade. Its original purpose was as a multi-purpose cinema and variety hall and was opened by actress Margaret Lockwood.

In the 1970s it stopped presenting films and become solely a concert venue.

It also hosts seated events to a capacity of 2,693. Split into two levels, the upstairs contains permanently fitted seating, whereas the larger downstairs can be altered to suit the event; both levels view a single concert stage. The venue has no air-conditioning except in the "Whiteroom" hospitality area.

The venue hosts a large number of popular music-based concerts and other events throughout the year.

Apollo Theater

The Apollo Theater at 253 West 125th Street between Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard and Frederick Douglass Boulevard in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City is a music hall which is a noted venue for African-American performers. It was the home of Showtime at the Apollo, a nationally syndicated television variety show which showcased new talent, from 1987 to 2008, encompassing 1093 episodes.

The theater, which has a capacity of 1506, was built in 1913-14 as Hurtig & Seamon's New Burlesque Theater, and was designed by George Keister in the neo-Classical style. It became the Apollo in 1934, when it was opened to black patrons – previously it had been a whites-only venue. In 1983, both the interior and exterior of the building were designated as New York City Landmarks, and the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It is estimated that 1.3 million people visit the Apollo every year.

Creation and rise

The building which later became the Apollo Theater was built in 1913-14 and was designed by architect George Keister, who also designed the First Baptist Church in the City of New York. It was originally Hurtig and Seamon's New (Burlesque) Theater, which enforced a strict "Whites Only" policy. The theatre was operated by noted burlesque producers Jules Hurtig and Harry Seamon, who obtained a 30-year lease. It remained in operation until 1928, when Billy Minsky took over. The song "I May Be Wrong (But I Think You're Wonderful)" by Harry Sullivan and Harry Ruskin, written in 1929, became the theme song of the theater..

Apollo Brown

Erik Stephens (born June 20, 1980), better known by his stage name Apollo Brown, is an American hip hop producer. Based in Detroit, he is a resident producer for Mello Music Group. He has released critically acclaimed collaborative albums with emcees such as Ghostface Killah, Journalist 103, Verbal Kent, Planet Asia, and Ras Kass, and in 2012 both his collaborations with O.C. (Trophies) and Guilty Simpson (Dice Game) charted on Billboards R&B Albums chart. Brown has also released a number of acclaimed instrumental albums, including Thirty Eight in 2014. Beyond periodically touring with collaborators such as Guilty Simpson at festivals such as the 80/35 Music Festival, Brown is a professional photographer for Crush Media Group, a media group he co-owns.

Early life

Apollo Brown was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan in a bi-racial family. He started liking hip hop while young, and became avid fan in 1991 when he first heard the album Breaking Atoms by Main Source, stating "that was what did it for me, and I’ve been hooked ever since."
