George Will's Libertarian Evolution: Q&A; on Obama, Syria, & the Power of Choice
"I've lived in Washington now for 44 years, and that's a lot of folly to witness up close," says Washington Post columnist George Will. "I've lived in Washington now for 44 years, and that's a lot of folly to witness up close," says Washington Post columnist George Will. "Whatever confidence and optimism I felt towards the central government when I got here on January 1, 1970 has pretty much dissipated at the hands of the government."
"In part, I owe my current happiness to Barack Obama," continues the 72-year-old Will, who "so thoroughly concentrates all of the American progressive tradition and the academic culture that goes with it, that he's really put the spring in my step."
Branded "perhaps the most powerful journalist in America" by the Wall Street Journal, Will received the Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 1977 and is the author of numerous books, including Statecraft as Soulcraft: What Government Does, Men at Work: The Craft of Baseball, and One Man's America: The Pleasures and Provocations of our Singular Nation. A regular panelist on ABC's This Week, Will has the distinction of having been attacked in the pages of Doonesbury and praised in an episode of Seinfeld (for his "clean, scrubbed look").
More recently Will has become a champion of libertarianism, both in print and on the air. "America is moving in the libertarians' direction," Will wrote in a 2011 review of The Declaration of Independents, "not because they have won an argument but because government and the sectors it dominates have made themselves ludicrous."
Will sat down with Reason's Nick Gillespie and Matt Welch to discuss his libertarian evolution (2:16), how Sen. John McCain spurred his political transformation (4:07), Ronald Reagan (4:29), the tax code (8:45), why the Republicans are becoming more interesting (19:30), what the government should be spending money on (23:14), war hawks and foreign policy (25:19), the benefits of judicial activism (34:49), gay marriage (37:55), marijuana legalization (39:04), the importance of Barry Goldwater (40:28), Mitt Romney (45:45), the 2016 election (46:37), Medicare (48:52), how Everett Dirksen's untimely death changed his life (50:42), why President Obama makes him happy (52:06), affirmative action (53:07), and his optimism in America's future (57:31).

George Frederick Will (born May 4, 1941) is an American newspaper columnist, journalist, and author. He is a Pulitzer Prize–winner best known for his conservative commentary on politics. In 1986, The Wall Street Journal called him “perhaps the most powerful journalist in America,” in a league with Walter Lippmann (1889–1974).
Will was born in Champaign, Illinois, the son of Frederick L. Will and Louise Hendrickson Will.[4] His father was a professor of philosophy, specializing in epistemology, at the University of Illinois.
Will graduated from University Laboratory High School of Urbana, Illinois, and Trinity College, in Hartford, Connecticut (BA, Religion, 1962).[5] He subsequently studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Magdalen College, Oxford, (BA, MA), and received MA and PhD degrees in politics from Princeton University. His 1968 PhD dissertation was entitled Beyond the Reach of Majorities: Closed Questions in the Open Society.
From 1970 to 1972, he served on the staff of Senator Gordon Allott (R-CO). Will then taught political philosophy at the James Madison College of Michigan State University, and at the University of Toronto. He taught at Harvard University in 1995 and again in 1998.
Will served as an editor for National Review from 1972 to 1978. He joined the Washington Post Writers Group in 1974, writing a syndicated biweekly column, which became widely circulated among newspapers across the country and continues today. His column is syndicated to 450 newspapers.[6] In 1976 he became a contributing editor for Newsweek, writing a biweekly backpage column until 2011.
Will was widely praised by liberals for condemning the corruption of the Nixon presidency. He won a Pulitzer Prize for Commentary for "distinguished commentary on a variety of topics" in 1977.[7] Often combining factual reporting with conservative commentary, Will's columns are known for their erudite vocabulary, allusions to political philosophers, and frequent references to baseball.[8]
Will has also written two bestselling books on the game of baseball, three books on political philosophy, and has published eleven compilations of his columns for The Washington Post and Newsweek and of various book reviews and lectures.
Will is currently a contributor for Fox News.[9] Prior to joining Fox News in 2013, Will was a news analyst for ABC News since the early 1980s and was a founding member on the panel of ABC's This Week with David Brinkley in 1981, now titled This Week w

Michael Needham, CEO of Heritage Action for America has a different take on the significance of this event. Needham understands that a shift is occurring within the conservative grassroots. The same forces that unseated Eric Cantor are behind John Boehner's resignation.

george will speaks on donald trump. George Will, who is sounding increasingly anxious about the unruly behavior of the 2016 GOP field, called celebrity plutocrat Donald Trump a “one-man Todd Akin,” in that his inflammatory statements pose a massive problem for the rest of the Republican Party.
“Picture him on stage in [the GOP debate in] Cleveland,” Will said on Fox News Sunday this morning. “He says something hideously inflammatory — which is all he knows how to say — and then what do the other nine people on stage do? Do they either become complicit in what he said by their silence, or do they all have to attack him? The debate gets hijacked. The process gets hijacked. At the end of the day he is a one-man Todd Akin. He’s Todd Akin with ten different facets.”
Akin derailed the GOP’s 2012 efforts to retake the Senate when his comments about “legitimate rape” not only cost him a Senate seat but played right into the Democrats’ War on Women narrative.
As for Trump, Will added that his antics were indistinguishable from those of a “Democratic mole” sent to wreak havoc upon the Republican field.

--George Will On ABC: 'Cultural Collapse,' 'Unwed Mothers,' 'Voting For Incompetents' Bankrupted Detroit
-
-A panel on This Week With George Stephanopoulos went at each other over the possibility of federal intervention in Detroit's bankruptcy, with the discussion growing especially heated after George Will suggested that Detroit's "cultural problems," including unwed mothers, were to blame for the city's financial ruin.
"Eighty percent of the pain in this restructuring is being borne by the workers and the retirees if this plan goes through," argued Steve Rattner, who oversaw the auto bailout and argued in an op-ed last week that the government should assist the city itself. "Detroit needs investment, and that's where the federal government and the state, particularly, can and should help."
"You can't solve their problems because their problems are cultural," Will said. "You have a city, 139 square miles, you can graze cattle in vast portions of it. Dangerous herds of feral dogs roam in there. You have three percent of fourth graders reading at the national math standards. 47% of Detroit residents are functionally illiterate. 79% of Detroit children are born to unmarried mothers. They don't have a fiscal problem, Steve, they have a cultural collapse."
"I find that really insulting to the people of Detroit," said Katrina vanden Heuvel. "There is a serious discussion about the future of cities in a time of deindustrialization, but in many ways, Detroit has been a victim of market forces. I think that what Steve said is so critical, that retirees and workers should not bear this. This story should not be hijacked as one of about greedy, fiscal public unions."
"What Steve said in his op-ed was that the people in Detroit are no more to blame than the victims of Hurricane Sandy because apart from voting—well what did they vote for?" Will said. "For sixty years they voted for incompetents, malcontents and in some cases criminals."
"So what do you want to do?" Rattner responded. "Do you want to leave them sitting in exactly the situation you just described. Or in the spirit of America, trying to help people who are less fortunate—whether they're victims of natural disasters or their own ignorance or whatever—do you want to reach out and try to help them, and try to reinvent Detroit? For not a lot of money. We're talking about a couple billion dollars. This is small potatoes in the great scheme of life. Or we have your scenario, leave them all to sit with feral dogs for the rest of their lives."
"Hobbesian anarchy," vanden Heuvel said.

George North will not switch to centre from wing against Fiji amid Wales' injury problems, says Rob Howley.
After Wales lost Scott Williams to injury in their win over England, North moved to midfield and later said he would be prepared to swap roles.
Wales assistant coach Howley says North is a midfield option, but added: "We won't pick George in the centre [against Fiji]."
Wales will name their "best side", added Howley.
"I think it's important after the momentum we created on Saturday night," he said.
"The roof is closed on Thursday, there'll be a dry ball and they'll come and try to play and it's important we play with a structure to the game so we play on our terms and not Fiji's terms.
"They put Australia under pressure, but we've got every confidence in our set-piece.
"I think it's an area we will look at following the game against England and going in to this game."
James Hook and Gareth Anscombe were called up to the squad after Scott Williams and Hallam Amos became their latest major casualties and will be considered for selection.
Full-back Liam Williams suffered concussion against England and will not face Fiji as he goes through the necessary protocols before he can resume training.
If Wales, who are second in Pool A behind Australia, beat Fiji they will top the group, before England, in third, play the Wallabies on Saturday.
'Wales in a good position'
Wales head coach Warren Gatland was already without Leigh Halfpenny, Rhys Webb and Cory Allen because of injury.
But despite the attrition on the Wales squad before and during the World Cup, defence coach Shaun Edwards says they will remain focused on securing a quarter-final place.
"Obviously we have put ourselves in a good position, but the job is only half done," he said.
'Strong defensive unit'
Although Fiji have lost their opening two games to England and Australia, the Pacific Islanders caused problems for their rivals and remain a powerful side.
However, they will be without giant wing Nemani Nadolo, who has been banned for a tip tackle against Australia.
"I have been incredibly impressed with Fiji," Edwards said.
"Against Australia they conceded three tries, two of them from mauls, so they went 80 minutes and only conceded one open-field try against a fully-loaded Wallabies team with Matt Giteau, Israel Folau and all the superstars.
"They are a very, very strong defensive unit."

Professor George will discuss the threats posed by the legal recognition of same-sex partnerships as "marriages," especially when combined with "Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity" (SOGI) laws, to religious freedom and basic rights of conscience. These threats are in the domains of employment, accreditation of educational institutions, licensing, and government contracting. He will also address the use of economic and cultural power to stigmatize and marginalize defenders of chastity and conjugal understanding of marriage and bully them into acquiescence or silence. He will highlight the need for courage in bearing witness to the truth about marriage and sexual integrity, and the importance of effective advocacy in the cultural and political spheres.
Dr. Robert P. George is McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and Director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University. He has also taught at Harvard Law School. He is Chairman of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, and has served on the President's Council on Bioethics and as a presidential appointee to the U.S. Commission of Human Rights. He was a Judicial Fellow at the Supreme Court of the United States, where he received the Justice Tom C. Clark Award. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Swarthmore College, he holds degrees in law and theology from Harvard and a doctorate in philosophy of law from Oxford University, in addition to many honorary degrees. He is a recipient of the U.S. Presidential Citizens Medel and the Honorary Medal for the Defense of Human Rights of the Republic of Poland, and is a member of the Council of Foreign Relations.
