The Republican Party is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States, along with the Democratic Party. Founded by anti-slavery expansion activists in 1854, it is often called the GOP (Grand Old Party), although the rival Democratic Party is older. Eighteen US presidents have been Republicans. The party's platform generally reflects American conservatism in the U.S. political spectrum. American conservatism of the Republican Party is not wholly based upon rejection of the political ideology of liberalism, as many principles of American conservatism are based upon classical liberalism. Rather the Republican Party's conservatism is largely based upon its support of classical liberal principles against the modern liberalism of the Democratic Party that is considered American liberalism in contemporary American political discourse.

In the 112th Congress, elected in 2010, the Republican Party holds a majority of seats in the House of Representatives and a minority of seats in the Senate. The party holds the majority of governorships as well as the majority of state legislatures.

Donald John Trump, Sr. (born June 14, 1946) is an American business magnate, television personality and author. He is the chairman and president of The Trump Organization and the founder of Trump Entertainment Resorts. Trump's extravagant lifestyle, outspoken manner and role on the NBC reality show The Apprentice have made him a well-known celebrity who was No. 17 on the 2011 Forbes Celebrity 100 list. He is well-known as a real-estate developer who amassed vast hotel, casino, and other real-estate properties, in the New York City area and around the world.

Trump is the son of Fred Trump, a wealthy New York City real-estate developer. He worked for his father's firm, Elizabeth Trump & Son, while attending the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and in 1968 officially joined the company. He was given control of the company in 1971 and renamed it The Trump Organization.

In 2010, Trump expressed an interest in becoming a candidate for President of the United States in the 2012 election. In May 2011, he announced he would not be a candidate, but a few weeks later he said he had not completely ruled out the possibility. In December 2011, Trump was suggested as a possible Vice Presidential selection by Michele Bachmann. Bachmann has since suspended her presidential campaign.

Fiorina earned perhaps the biggest applause of the night as she skewered Planned Parenthood. Fiorina dodged an early opportunity to hit Trump but didn't make that mistake again when she was asked to address the businessman's recent comments about her appearance to Rolling Stone, in which he suggested her face would make her unelectable. Fiorina takes on Trump New York journalist and CNN contributor Errol Louis said after the debate that Fiorina was "the clearest winner." Marco Rubio Rubio proved Wednesday night why so many GOP elites have long considered him a top contender for the Republican nomination: He can weave his strong handle of policy with a compelling personal narrative. Rubio took on Trump differently than Fiorina or Bush, dispatching the front-runner without attacking him directly, instead steering the debate toward his strengths. When Trump pointed out Rubio's voting absences in the Senate, Rubio refused to retort with an attack of his own. Jeb Bush "You know what? As it relates to my brother, there's one thing I know for sure. He kept us safe," Bush told Trump to one of his strongest applause moments of the night. "You remember the fire fighter with his arms around it? He sent a clear signal that the United States would be strong and fight Islamic terrorism, and he did keep us safe." And he also successfully tackled Trump over the billionaire's suggestion that Bush's Mexican-American wife was the reason for his support for comprehensive immigration reform. "To subject my wife into the middle of a raucous political conversation was completely inappropriate, and I hope you apologize for that, Donald," Bush said. "Why don't you apologize to her right now." Trump declined. Chris Christie "While I'm as entertained as anyone by this personal back-and-forth about the history of Donald and Carly's career, for the 55-year-old construction worker out in that audience tonight who doesn't have a job, who can't fund his child's education, I've got to tell you the truth. They could care less about your careers, they care about theirs," Christie said. "Let's start talking about that on this stage and stop playing -- and stop playing the games." Earlier in the night, Christie suggested the problem with the debate was "we're fighting with each other up here" over how to approach defunding Planned Parenthood even though "we agree." Unclear Donald Trump Trump stumbled in responding to Fiorina's deft answer to his comments about her face, awkwardly calling her "beautiful" after suggesting her looks would keep Americans from voting for her. Former Bush aide and CNN political commentator Ana Navarro spoke highly of the move. And when Bush attacked him for a "lack of judgment" and "lack of understanding about how the world works," Trump resorted to an oft-used tactic of tying Bush to his brother's presidency suggesting that "your brother's administration gave us Barack Obama because it was such a disaster ... that Abraham Lincoln couldn't have been elected." Bush's quick answer -- that his brother kept the country safe -- knocked Trump off balance as the crowd roared in approval. And as he faced questions over foreign policy and his flubbed response to conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, who was one of the debate's questioners, Trump smartly pivoted to Hewitt, insulating himself from further attacks from his rivals. Conservative analyst Mercedes Schlapp said Trump was silent for more than 30 minutes of discussion n serious policy issues. Odds of Trump nomination drop after debate John Kasich Losers Rand Paul Scott Walker Ben Carson It wasn't for a lack of opportunities: Carson got several openings to knock Trump, but refused, even when Trump put forward some sketchy scientific backing for his views on vaccines. Obama: If GOP Candidates Can't Handle CNBC, How Will They Deal With Russia and China? "If you can’t handle those guys, I don't think the Chinese and the Russians are going to be too worried about you," Obama told a gathering at a NYC fundraiser Monday evening. President Barack Obama on Monday evening weighed in on the controversy over the latest Republican debate by mocking the GOP presidential candidates for not being able to "handle a bunch CNBC moderators." "They say, 'When I talk to Putin, he’s going to straighten out,' " Obama told a gathering at a fundraiser in New York City. "And then it turns out they can't handle a bunch of CNBC moderators." He continued: "If you can’t handle those guys, I don't think the Chinese and the Russians are going to be too worried about you." Obama made his comments amid the ongoing aftermath of a CNBC presidential debate, which has been widely criticized by candidates as being out of control and unfair. Amid the Republican National Committee's announcement that the party will boycott next year's NBC debate amid the flap over format and control of the questioning, Carly Fiorina on Monday backed the notion that Glenn Beck should moderate one of the future debates. Meanwhile, Ted Cruz floated the idea of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity as moderators. Over the weekend, attorney Ben Ginsberg, who has met with a number of the candidate's operatives, put together a letter that poses a series of demands. A draft copy, which was circulated among the candidates Monday, includes a number of diva-esque demands, ranging from banning "gotcha questions," keeping the temperature on the stage below 67 degrees and allowing at least one bathroom break. Typical to form, Donald Trump broke with the rest of the the field, saying that he planned to negotiate with the individual networks himself

Appearing on Broadway for one night only: Barack Obama, in a solo comedy act roasting the Republican Party. The president left a crowd of more than 1,300 in stiches on Monday night at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, home to the hit musical "Hamilton" about Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. The cast staged a special performance for a Democratic National Committee fundraiser, with Obama as the encore Deviating from his typical fundraiser spiel, Obama said the 2016 Republican presidential candidates seem to "occupy a different reality" in which the country has taken a perilous turn since he took office nearly seven years ago. "According to them, everything was really good in 2008, when we were going through the worst economic crisis in our lifetimes," Obama said. "This, apparently, was the golden age that I messed up." And they're so glum," Obama added, barely containing his feelings about the GOP cast of characters seeking his job. "They're really so frustrated." Tweaking Republicans who question climate change, Obama likened it to having 99 out of 100 doctors tell someone they have diabetes and having that person brush it off as a conspiracy. All 99 of those doctors got together — with Obama — to try to prevent me from having bacon and doughnuts," Obama said to laughter in the ornate Times Square theater. "It'd be funny — except this is about climate change. This was an analogy." He recalled incredulously how a GOP senator stood on the floor of the Senate with a snowball to question global warming, and whipped out a phrase perhaps borrowed from one of his daughters. "It's cray!" he said. As the 2016 race has picked up steam, Obama has largely stayed on the sidelines, only occasionally offering his own commentary. Instead, he's been trying to lay the groundwork for Democrats to make a persuasive economic case in the general election. He seemed to let loose at Monday's performance, which drew roughly 1,300 donors who paid between $500 and $10,000 a pop. Before the curtain fell, Obama took a last jab at the Republican field over foreign policy, mocking claims by Donald Trump and others that relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin would improve if they were elected. "And then it turns out they can't handle a bunch of CNBC moderators," Obama quipped, poking fun at candidates' complaints about last week's GOP presidential debate. "If you can't handle those guys, I don't think the Chinese and the Russians are going to be too worried about you."

GOP Presidential Candidates Threaten to Boycott Next Debate The race for president, lots of action on the campaign trail as Donald Trump and Ben Carson threaten to boycott the next debate, Hillary Clinton confident enough to talk running mates while Joe Biden keeps the guessing game going and Tom llamas tracks it all. Reporter: Good morning. This morn we have a copy of a letter from one of vice president's closest aides that many say holds some telling information about what vice president Biden may do. More on this in a moment but first a major power play by top republicans. This morning a republican revolt over the next debate. Now they want to make this an extra hour. Reporter: Both Donald Trump and Dr. Ben Carson threatening not to show up if host CNBC tries to change the format making the debate longer. The two leading gop candidates writing in a joint wlert to CNBC they do not and will not agree to appear at a debate that is more than 120 minutes long including commercial breaks. Also demanding the debate include opening and closing statements from all the candidates. I think it's unfair to the viewers because it's too much, it's too much to watch and they're doing it because they want to make more money. Reporter: But not all the candidates are complaining. Carly fiorina telling trump and Carson to stop whining. I think they need to spend as much time as possible answering the American people's questions. So I'm all for three hours. I'm sorry they apparently don't have the endurance to go the distance. Reporter: In a statement to ABC news CNBC says we will certainly take the candidates' views on the format into consideration as we finalize the debate structure. As for the democrats, housing and urban development secretary Julian Castro endorsing Hillary Clinton Thursday sparking questions if she would consider him as a running mate. I am going to really look hard at him for anything because that's how good he is and he deserves the accolades he's receiving. Reporter: This as current vice president Joe Biden continues dodging questions about whether he'll run. Sources tell ABC news he is close to making a decision. Do democrats deserve your decision, Mr. Vice president? Reporter: Now vice president Biden laughing it off but last night one of his top political aides sent this letter. We have a copy to former Biden staffers and supporters saying the vice president will need their help if he runs but he hasn't made a decision yet but his platform will be built on how to change the balance of the economy to help the middle class. George. Keeping the door open. Meanwhile, the new fund-raising Numbers are in. Jeb bush started out so strong now stuck in the middle of the republican pack. Here are some of the highlights. Dr. Ben Carson raising the most last quarter, more than $20 million. But get this, senator Ted Cruz, he's the republican with the most cash on hand, $14 million. And trump who is self-funding his campaign is now also accepting money, about $4 million in independent donations, many people pointing to outsiders being the top of the fund-raising game. Amazing. Thanks, Tom. We'll have a big show on Sunday. Both Ben Carson and Bernie sanders on "This week." We'll look forward to that. Now to a major arrest in the+Debate (Quotation Subject)+Politics (TV Genre)

FULL- CNN Republican Presidential Debate, GOP DEBATE Part 1 Sept. 16, 2015. 7 things to watch at the CNN Republican debate. Simi Valley, California (CNN)—Donald Trump will play the lead role in the second Republican presidential debate tonight -- but his rivals are jockeying to steal his spotlight. As the GOP's frontrunner, Trump will once again take center stage at CNN's debate at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. With Reagan's Air Force One as the backdrop, Trump will be flanked by retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who has been increasingly eager to take on the combative businessman. Meanwhile, one newcomer to the prime-time debate -- Carly Fiorina -- seems poised and ready to take on Trump directly. With the Iowa caucuses less than five months away and pressure mounting for the middle-tier candidates, the CNN debate offers an opening for candidates to deliver a presidential performance -- and avoid getting lost in the Donald Trump show. But a misstep could damage their presidential prospects. Here are seven things to watch in tonight's debate: What will Trump say this time? The question isn't whether Trump will shock and awe -- but how? At last month's GOP debate, the wealthy real estate magnate had the audience both booing and cheering within minutes of taking the stage, when he refused to rule out a third-party run and took a shot at comedian Rosie O'Donnell. His unorthodox performance has only fueled his popularity -- his national numbers have gone up and he's leading in key states like Iowa and New Hampshire. But while Trump will no doubt deliver another explosive performance Wednesday, the debate stage this week will probably feel more hostile than last time. Trump vs. Fiorina Can Fiorina do the impossible -- and upstage The Donald? With a standout performance at the first GOP debate and a subsequent uptick in the polls, the former Hewlett-Packard CEO won a spot at the main debate alongside her top-ranking rivals. With her quick, effortless delivery and sharp attack lines, Fiorina seems one of the best equipped in Wednesday's lineup to take Trump head-on. Dan Pfeiffer, former adviser to President Barack Obama, said Monday on "The Lead" that Trump may be better off staying away from Fiorina altogether. What hand will Carson play? Part 3/5: https://youtu.be/2fZwTxVTCU8 FULL CNN GOP Debate: 2nd CNN Republican Presidential Debate Part 2 Sept. 16, 2015. Donald Trump, Ben Carson, Rand Paul, Carly Fiorina, Chris Christie, Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Scott Walker, John Kasick, Mike Huckabee 7 things to watch at the CNN Republican debate. Carson's devout faith is one of his most powerful political assets. A Seventh Day Adventist, Carson speaks openly about his spiritual beliefs on the campaign trail. His appeal to evangelicals is proving to be particularly potent in a state like Iowa, which has a sizeable population of born-again Christians. Donald Trump's FULL Speech in Iowa: https://youtu.be/kj9xsrhJKOQ You're gonnal be so proud to be citizens of the United States, You're Going to Love President Trump. GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks at a fundraising dinner in Birch Run, Michigan Tuesday night, August 11 GOP candidate Donald Trump on immigration: 'Mexico is going to pay for the wall, and they will be happy about it' Donald Trump Dinner Speech Press Conference Michigan A lovefest for Donald Trump in Birch Run, Mich. Trump attacks BIRCH RUN, Mich. — Addressing about 2,000 very enthusiastic people at the Birch Run Expo Center, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump touched on everything from immigration, China, the military, Obamacare and his Republican opponents. The crowd, some coming from outside of Michigan, ate it up, giving him frequent standing ovations and breaking into chants of "Trump, Trump, Trump!" and "U.S.A, U.S.A." "I love people, I love this country. We are going to make it so strong and so powerful," he said. "You are going to love a President Trump." Trump brought his campaign to Michigan Tuesday after several days of media attention focused on his statements about women and Latinos. Tuesday's event was sponsored by the Saginaw and Genesee county Republican parties and attendees paid $25 for a chance to hear Trump in person. VIP seating went for $125. His criticisms were many: Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush made a fatal mistake with a remark on how much needs to be spent on women's health issues; Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is nice, but the surpluses in his state, not so much; former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's e-mails are going to sink her campaign and she's controlled by lobbyists; Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry are sinking in the polls after criticizing him; the media are "scavengers," and Ford Motor Company is making a huge mistake by deciding to build a $2.5-billion plant in Mexico, rather than in the United States. "Mexico is killing us on trade. This is going to make Detroit look like small potatoes. They're taking our factories and building these massive plants in Mexico ... Why don't we just let the illegals drive the cars and trucks across the border into our country," Trump said, acknowledging his presence in a automotive manufacturing state. "The deal is not going to be approved, I want that plant to be built here." He said he'll build up the military, get rid of Obamacare, scuttle the Iran nuclear deal and compared his run for residency to his television show "The Apprentice," noting people were skeptical about the show, but it went on be hugely successful. "I made them a fortune," he said, adding NBC hates him because they wanted to renew the show, but he decided to run for president instead. And despite leading in the polls, Trump told reporters he won't give up the option of running as a third party candidate. "I want to run as a Republican, but I’m going to keep the door open," he said. "I was part of the establishment two months ago. I was a big giver, but once I decided to run, all of a sudden, I'm anti-establishment ... As long as I'm treated fairly and fairly is an instinct. I know what fair is.." Prior to the rally, Trump made himself available to reporters and photographers . He said that despite his controversial comments regarding Mexican immigrants and women, he'll get their support. Speaking to reporters before his speech, he said: "We’re going to do very well with the Hispanic vote. We’re going to do really well with the women vote. I’ll be creating a tremendous number of jobs. And on women health issues, I’m for that." When asked to give specifics about the issues of the day -- creating jobs and improving the economy -- Trump said he has to remain flexible. And he said he's proven himself by getting two development projects, one in Miami, and the Old Post Office building on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D.C.Trump brought his campaign to become the Republican nominee for president to Michigan Tuesday. After the news conference he addressed supporters at the Birch Run Expo Center. "You're going to see lots of plans from me," he said. "I got (the two development projects) because I know how to get things done. The most sought after property and Trump got it." Trump's visit to Michigan — his first since speaking to Oakland County Republicans in 2013 — comes after a week of controversy starting with his debate performance in Cleveland and finishing up with controversial comments slamming the Fox News hosts who moderated the debate. He is still maintaining a substantial lead in the polls of the 17 GOP candidates for president.

Carson's devout faith is one of his most powerful political assets. A Seventh Day Adventist, Carson speaks openly about his spiritual beliefs on the campaign trail. His appeal to evangelicals is proving to be particularly potent in a state like Iowa, which has a sizeable population of born-again Christians. The Bush reboot Under fire from Trump for lacking charisma, Bush is trying to ditch his old self. The new Bush is more confrontational, personable and energetic. The reboot signals an acknowledgment that taking the backseat and waiting for Trump's campaign to implode is -- at least right now -- a losing game. Can Scott Walker salvage his campaign? He was supposed to be an A-list candidate. But these days, Walker is simply trying to stop the slide in his poll numbers. The Wisconsin governor has lost his lead in Iowa, a state now dominated by Trump. Only 3% of GOP caucus-goers in the Hawkeye State said they were supporting Walker in a recent Quinnipiac University poll.
