RAIN failed to dampen villagers' enthusiasm for a fiery custom dating back to pagan times at Whalton, Northumberland, tonight.
The practice of lighting a bonfire - or bale - on July 4, traditionally midsummer's eve, has been upheld as long as anyone can remember.
It was even observed during the blackout in the Second World War, by quickly striking a light and dousing it again.
Children from Whalton First School danced around the bonfire before it was lit, and there was an opportunity for parents to join in too.
At one time young people would leap through the flames, but unsurprisingly that no longer happens.
Tonight's event drew a large crowd, many under umbrellas to protect them from the decidedly un-summerlike weather.
