In England, the region is the highest tier of sub-national division used by central Government. They are defined as first levelNUTS regions ("NUTS 1 regions") within the European Union. Between 1994 and 2011, the nine regions, which generally followed the boundaries of "standard regions" established in the 1940s, had an administrative role in the implementation of UK Government policy.
The London region is coterminous with the administrative area of Greater London, which has a directly elected Mayor and Assembly. The other eight regions have Local authority leaders' boards, which have limited powers and functions delegated by Central Government departments, with members appointed by local government bodies. These boards replaced indirectly elected Regional Assemblies, which were established in 1994 and undertook a range of co-ordinating, lobbying, scrutiny and strategic planning functions until their abolition.
Each region also had a Government Office with some responsibility for coordinating policy, and, from 2007 to 2010, each also had its own part-time regional minister within the Government. In 2009 the House of Commons established regional Select Committees for each of the regions outside of London. These committees ceased to exist upon the dissolution of Parliament on 12 April 2010 and were not re-established by the newly elected House. Regional ministers were not reappointed by the incoming Coalition Government, and the Government Offices were abolished in 2011.
Clegg was elected to the House of Commons at the 2005 general election and became the Liberal Democrats' Home Affairs spokesperson in 2006. Clegg became Deputy Prime Minister following the 2010 general election, when the Liberal Democrats formed a coalition government with the Conservative Party. As well as his parliamentary roles, Clegg has contributed to many pamphlets and books on political issues. He has also had a large number of jobs, including being a skiing instructor and working in the office of a bank in Helsinki.

Families have been divided by the war's frontline, and some relationships have been torn apart along political lines - between those who support the self-proclaimed pro-Russian republics to the east, and those who believe in a united Ukraine. Tom Burridge reports from one of those divided regions, Donetsk.

In the Footsteps of the Poets
Beginning in Liguria, a region bordered by mountains and a beautiful rocky coastline which inspired the English Romantic poets, Andrew Graham-Dixon and Giorgio Locatelli travel along the west coast of Italy, exploring the culture and cuisine of the diverse regions. Their first stop is the city of Genoa, once a great maritime republic, whose former glory is reflected it its opulent Baroque palaces with their imposing facades, glamorous decor and splendid paintings by artists such as Van Dyck and Bernardo Strozzi. In contrast to these grand statements of wealth, Giorgio makes the simple dish that the city is famous for - pesto alla genovese. The two travellers' then move on to the Cinque Terre, a rugged portion of coastline featuring a national park and five picturesque villages seemingly wedged into the cliff face beside sea. Finally, Andrew and Giorgio cross over into Tuscany and, managing to stay off the tourist trail, visit a hidden gem of Renaissance art in Pistoia and one of Pisa's best-kept secrets. They finish back by the sea at the port city of Livorno, where the fishermen's catch of the day dictates the menu.

The Seven Wonders of the World (or the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) refers to remarkable constructions of classical antiquity listed by various authors in guidebooks popular among the ancient Hellenic tourists, particularly in the 1st and 2nd centuries BC. The most prominent of these, the versions by Antipater of Sidon and an observer identified as Philo of Byzantium, comprise seven works located around the eastern Mediterranean rim. The original list inspired innumerable versions through the ages, often listing seven entries. Of the original Seven Wonders, only one—the Great Pyramid of Giza, the oldest of the ancient wonders—remains r

For many throughout the world, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, otherwise known as ISIS, has come to represent the modern day boogeyman. But what is ISIS, how did they evolve, how do they operate, and to what extent do they accurately reflect the fundamentals of Islamic faith and ideology?

In the past several years, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), has forcefully taken a stronghold in regions throughout the Middle East, and the prominence of their singular brand of terror continues to expand on a daily basis. Few of the world's inhabitants have been immune to frequent news reports of the mass killings, savage beheadings and other acts of blood curdling horror perpetrated by this much feared terrorist organization.
The frightening and timely new documentary ISIS: On the Frontline, produced by Ahlulbayt TV, places us at the epicenter of this ever-evolving cancer, and follows the brave Iraqi citizens who have dared to stand united in their defiance of ISIS.
"There is no doubt that when ISIS tried to take over certain parts of Iraq, their aim was to seize the whole country regardless of the religion followed," attests Sayed Ammar Al-Hakim, the President of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, during the course of the film. According to the testimony of Al-Hakim and others, ISIS militants have shown no favoritism to any particular religion or sect, and have indiscriminately massacred anyone who stands in opposition to their rule. In response to this threat, average Iraqi citizens have been encouraged to enlist in the military to defend their position within their homeland.
The motivations behind these defensive strategies are affirmed by an inside look into just a few of the atrocities committed by ISIS on Iraqi soil. The film's chief witness to these atrocities is Thaher Abdel Kareem, the survivor of a haunting and vicious kidnapping at the hands of the terrorist group.
For viewers who have considered the threat of ISIS only from the outsider's perspective driven by western media outlets, ISIS: On the Frontline offers a valuable portrait of the war being waged on the inside. The challenges faced by those who chose to combat this brutalizing threat are vast, and much blood will be shed before an end is reached. But the drive to defend against the ISIS threat speaks to the very foundations of humanity itself.
"The war is not between the Shia and the Sunni," says interview subject and Iraqi politician Redha Jawad Taki. "This is a war between savages and civilized people."

2015 - BBC World News - 1-Min Silence in France as 3rd Police Officer is Shot Dead in Paris - 8/1/15
Lyce Doucet & David Eades present this 30-minute edition of BBC World News, recorded at 1900hrs SGT on 2015. The two main suspects in the Islamist attack on Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris are said to have robbed a service station in the north of France. They stole food and petrol, firing shots as they struck at the roadside stop near Villers-Cotterets in the Aisne region, French media report. France has observed a minute's silence for the 12 people killed at the office of the satirical magazine. Earlier in the day, a gunman shot dead a policewoman in southern Paris. A second person was seriously injured in the attack in the suburb of Montrouge, after which the gunman fled. It is unclear if the attack is related to the pursuit of prime suspects Cherif and Said Kouachi.
The following news article is reproduced from the BBC News online website @ http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-30721677
According to the manager of the service station that was robbed on the RN2 road in Aisne at about 10:30 (09:30 GMT), the attackers fit the description of the two men, and were heavily armed with Kalashnikovs and rocket-propelled grenade launchers.
They are said to have driven off in the direction of Paris in a Renault Clio car, apparently the same vehicle hijacked in Paris soon after the Charlie Hebdo attack.
According to French commercial channel BFMTV, police are monitoring all of the main entry roads into the capital.
During the national silence, the bells of Notre Dame cathedral in the capital tolled in mourning.
French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve warned against jumping to conclusions after the pre-dawn shooting in Montrouge.
The gunman was armed with a machine-gun and a pistol and wore a bullet-proof jacket, police sources told AFP news agency.
A local resident, Ahmed Sassi, described a "scene of panic". He said he had seen a police officer standing and then a man dressed in dark clothes who ran up and shot the officer "at point black range".
"I saw the officer fall and a colleague call for help," Mr Sassi said.
Overnight, seven people believed to be connected to the Kouachi brothers were detained in the towns of Reims and Charleville-Mezieres, as well as in the Paris area.
Cherif Kouachi was sentenced in 2008 to three years in prison for belonging to a Paris-based group sending jihadist fighters to Iraq.
'We killed Charlie Hebdo'
Paris has been placed on the highest terror alert and extra troops have been deployed to guard media offices, places of worship, transport and other sensitive areas.
On Wednesday, eight journalists - including the magazine's editor - died along with a caretaker and a visitor when masked men armed with assault rifles stormed the Charlie Hebdo offices during an editorial meeting. Eleven people were also wounded, some seriously.
Two policemen were also killed.
Witnesses say the gunmen shouted "we have avenged the Prophet Muhammad" and "we killed Charlie Hebdo", as well as "God is Great" in Arabic.
The attackers fled to northern Paris before abandoning their car and hijacking a Renault Clio, police say.
The magazine's office was firebombed in 2011. It had angered some Muslims by printing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad as part of its irreverent take on news and current affairs.
Vigils were held through the night in Paris and cities worldwide in tribute to the dead. Many demonstrators held up placards reading "Je suis Charlie" (I am Charlie) in solidarity with the victims.
French President Francois Hollande said the country's tradition of free speech had been attacked and called on all French people to stand together.
Piles of pens - symbolising freedom of expression - and candles were laid across the Place de la Republique square in Paris where thousands of people had gathered.
Cartoon tributes are circulating on social media, sending out the message of press freedom. One Dutch cartoon plays on 9/11 Twin Towers imagery, showing a plane flying towards two upright pencils.
Thursday's national day of mourning is only the fifth held in France in the past 50 years.

Of the original Seven Wonders, only one—the Great Pyramid of Giza, the oldest of the ancient wonders—remains relatively intact.
Background
In this painting by Maerten van Heemskerck, the seven wonders of the ancient world are depicted as a background for the abduction of Helen by Paris. The Walters Art Museum.
The Greek conquest of much of the known world in the 4th century BC gave Hellenistic travellers access to the civilizations of the Egyptians, Persians, and Babylonians. Impressed and captivated by the landmarks and marvels of the various lands, these travellers began to list what they saw to remember them.
Instead of "wonders", the ancient Greeks spoke of "theamata" (θεάματα), which means "sights", in other words "things to be seen". (Τὰ ἑπτὰ θεάματα τῆς οἰκουμένης [γῆς] Tà heptà theámata tēs oikoumenēs [gēs]) Later, the word for "wonder" ("thaumata" θαύματα) was used, and this is also the case in modern Greek (Επτά θαύματα του αρχαίου κόσμου). Hence, the list was meant to be the Ancient World's counterpart of a travel guidebook.
Each person had his own version of the list, but the best known and earliest surviving was from a poem by Greek-speaking epigrammist Antipater of Sidon from around 140 BC. He named six of the seven sites on his list—leaving out the lighthouse—, but was primarily in praise of the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
Another 2nd century BC observer, who claimed to be the mathematician Philo of Byzantium, wrote a short account entitled The Seven Sights of the World. However, the incomplete surviving manuscript only covered six of the supposedly seven places, which agreed with Antipater's list.
Earlier and later lists by the historian Herodotus (484 BC--ca. 425 BC) and the architect Callimachus of Cyrene (ca. 305--240 BC), housed at the Museum of Alexandria, survived only as references.
The Colossus of Rhodes was the last of the seven to be completed, after 280 BC, and the first to be destroyed, by an earthquake in 226/225 BC. Hence, all seven existed at the same time for a period of less than 60 years. Antipater had an earlier version which replaced Lighthouse of Alexandria with the Walls of Babylon. Lists which preceded the construction of Colossus of Rhodes completed their seven entries with the inclusion of the Ishtar Gate.
Scope
It is thought that the limitation of the lists to seven entries was attributed to the special magical meaning of the number. Geographically, the list covered only the sculptural and architectural monuments of the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions, which then comprised the known world for the Greeks. Hence, extant sites beyond this realm were not considered as part of contemporary accounts.
The primary accounts, coming from Hellenistic writers, also heavily influenced the places included in the wonders list. Five of the seven entries are a celebration of Greek accomplishments in the arts and architecture (the exceptions being the Pyramids of Giza and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon).

For many throughout the world, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, otherwise known as ISIS, has come to represent the modern day boogeyman. Characterized by vicious acts of violence, forced conversions, kidnappings and beheadings, their campaign of terror is projected into our homes on a nightly basis via the news or other forms of media. But what is ISIS, how did they evolve, how do they operate, and to what extent do they accurately reflect the fundamentals of Islamic faith and ideology?
This profoundly pertinent topic serves as the basis for the documentary titled ISIS: "Islamic" Extremism?, a thoughtful examination of a movement which has managed to generate ire and occasional support from citizens across every corner of the globe.
Classified as a terrorist organization by the United Nations, ISIS is a rebel group composed of radicalized Islamists who have conquered scattered regions throughout the Middle East, and seek to take control of many others. Their formation and rise to dominance came on the heels of the American-led war on terror, which resulted in the dethroning of al-Qaeda from the region. "Chaos is fundamentally an environment that ISIS [lives] on," observes Aymenn Al-Tamimi, an expert in Middle Eastern affairs and extremist groups at Oxford University, early in the film.
In addition to Al-Tamimi, the film also provides commentary from an assortment of other fascinating voices, including Abu Rumaysah, an ISIS supporter living in Britain, as well as ISIS detractors Dr. Usama Hasan, a senior researcher at the Quilliam Foundation, Mohammed Ali-Hilli, Islamic speaker and researcher, and Sayed Yousif Khoei, an esteemed Shi'a Islamic scholar.
In the midst of their observations, and disturbing footage of several grisly atrocities carried out by ISIS, comes the notion that these radicalized groups have perverted the purity of the ancient Islamic religion. According to Maulana Shahid Raza, Executive Secretary of the Muslim Shariah Council in the UK and another of the film's interview subjects, ISIS has "nothing in common with the great Islamic moral and spiritual teachings of tolerance, love, peace and coexistence."
Hosted by British Muslim political analyst Mojtaba Masood, ISIS: "Islamic" Extremism? expresses a need for all influential figures to join together to combat the scourge of ISIS and other extremist groups like them, and to combat the destructive perceptions of islamophobia that they instill in the hearts and minds of people throughout the world.

BBC News: Opening Titles - English Regions (2008)
This set of opening title sequences for the BBCs regional news bulletins was unveiled in 2008 as part of the Corporations attempt to create a unified brand for BBC News across all platforms (television , radio and new media).
Designed by branding expert Martin Lambie-Nairn, the red and white graphics are based upon a generic template created for the English regions. However, the final sequence for each area is unique in that it features footage shot locally, of people at work and play, together with images of local industry, transport, landscapes and landmarks.
The 15 BBC1 English regions are presented in the following order:
North East & Cumbria (Look North)
Yorkshire (Look North)
Yorkshire & Lincolnshire (Look North)
North West (North West Tonight)
West Midlands (Midlands Today)
East Midlands (East Midlands Today)
East East (Look East)
East West (Look East)
South East (South East Today)
South (South Today)
Oxford (Oxford)
West (Points West)
South West (Spotlight)
Channel Islands (Channel Islands News)
London (London)
When viewed in their entirety, they provide a somewhat sylised snapshot of life in 21st century England .
The accompanying music was composed by David Lowe as part of a new BBC News package released in 2008, which includes separate opening and closing themes, headline beds and stings for international, network and regional bulletins (with thanks to Hymagumba at TVF for providing the audio).

Andrew Graham-Dixon and chef Giorgio Locatelli travel through Italy exploring the country's history, culture, food, art and landscape. Their journey begins in Bologna, the capital of Emilia-Romagna, one of the richest regions in Italy. They find out why the city is know as la Dotta (the Learned), la Grassa (the Fat) and la Rossa (the Red), while visiting its shops, art institutions and the oldest university in the world.

From there, it is a short journey to Ferrara where they discover the legacy left by the famous dynasty d'Este, and to Modena, home of balsamic vinegar and Ferrari.

The Seven Wonders Of The World - BBC Documentary
The Seven Wonders Of The World - BBC Documentary
The Seven Wonders of the World (or the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) refers to remarkable constructions of classical antiquity listed by various authors in guidebooks popular among the ancient Hellenic tourists, particularly in the 1st and 2nd centuries BC. The most prominent of these, the versions by Antipater of Sidon and an observer identified as Philo of Byzantium, comprise seven works located around the eastern Mediterranean rim. The original list inspired innumerable versions through the ages, often listing seven entries.
