Torres del Paine National Park is a national park encompassing mountains, glaciers, lakes, and rivers in southern Chilean Patagonia. The Cordillera del Paine is the centerpiece of the park. It lies in a transition area between the Magellanic subpolar forests and the Patagonian Steppes. The park is located 112 km (70 mi) north of Puerto Natales and 312 km (194 mi) north of Punta Arenas. The park borders Bernardo O'Higgins National Park to the west and the Los Glaciares National Park to the north in Argentine territory.
Torres del Paine National Park is part of the Sistema Nacional de Áreas Silvestres Protegidas del Estado de Chile (National System of Protected Forested Areas of Chile). In 2006, it measured approximately 242,242 hectares. It is one of the largest and most visited parks in Chile. The park averages around 150,000 visitors a year, of which 60% are foreign tourists,[4] who come from all over the world.
The park is one of the 11 protected areas of the Magallanes Region and Chilean Antarctica (together with four national parks, three national reserves, and three national monuments). Together, the protected forested areas comprise about 51% of the land of the region (6,728,744 hectares).
The Torres del Paine are the peaks of the mountain range, Cerro Paine. They extend 3,050 meters above sea level, and are joined by the Cuernos del Paine. The area also boasts valleys, rivers such as the Paine, lakes, and glaciers. The well-known lakes include Grey, Pehoé, Nordenskiöld, and Sarmiento. The glaciers, including Grey, Pingo and Tyndall, belong to the Southern Patagonia Ice Field.

============
The national park has over 140,000 visitors per year.[2] It is a popular hiking destination in Chile. There are clearly marked paths and many refugios which provide shelter and basic services. Hikers can opt for a day trip to see the towers, walk the popular "W" route in about five days, or trek the full circle in 8 to 9 days. Make reservations for the night you will stay at each refugio. If you stay inside, dinner is served and there are hot showers. There is also breakfast and an optional picnic lunch. For a lesser fee one can rent a tent and sleeping bag and sleep on the grounds outside of the refugio, where cold showers are an option. The refugio locations are also appropriate for pitching one's own tent and cooking with one's campstove. Cooking with the campstove is not permitted except in refugio locations. Camping is only allowed at specified campsites and wood fires are prohibited throughout the park. Fantastico Sur and Vertice Patagonia are the two owners of the various refugios in the park. For less adventurous visitors, there is a luxury hotel at the entrance to the park.
Hikers are not allowed to stray from the paths in the national park. The visitor impact on the park has been scientifically measured.
A certified guide is required to access some parts of the park. These arrangements need to be made before entering the park.
Visiting the park is recommended between late December and late February, during the southern summer. Not only is the weather more hospitable, but daylight hours are very long given the extreme southern latitude. Outside of this time frame, the weather becomes too extreme for the majority of the public. During the southern winter, daylight dwindles to only a few hours a day.
The park has been elected as the 5th most beautiful place in the world by the National Geographic.

Chile (/ˈtʃɪli/;[7] Spanish: [ˈtʃile]), officially the Republic of Chile (Spanish: About this sound República de Chile (help·info)), is a South American country occupying a long, narrow strip of land between the Andes mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It borders Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast, Argentina to the east, and the Drake Passage in the far south. Chilean territory includes the Pacific islands of Juan Fernández, Salas y Gómez, Desventuradas, and Easter Island in Oceania. Chile also claims about 1,250,000 square kilometres (480,000 sq mi) of Antarctica, although all claims are suspended under the Antarctic Treaty.
The arid Atacama Desert in Chile's north contains great mineral wealth, principally copper. The relatively small central area dominates in terms of population and agricultural resources, and is the cultural and political center from which Chile expanded in the late 19th century when it incorporated its northern and southern regions. Southern Chile is rich in forests and grazing lands, and features a string of volcanoes and lakes. The southern coast is a labyrinth of fjords, inlets, canals, twisting peninsulas, and islands.[8]
Spain conquered and colonised Chile in the mid-16th century, replacing Inca rule in northern and central Chile, but failing to conquer the independent Mapuche that inhabited south-central Chile. After declaring its independence from Spain in 1818, Chile emerged in the 1830s as a relatively stable authoritarian republic. In the 19th century, Chile saw significant economic and territorial growth, ending Mapuche resistance in the 1880s and gaining its current northern territory in the War of the Pacific (1879–83) after defeating Peru and Bolivia.[9] In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the country experienced severe left-right political polarization and turmoil. This development culminated with the 1973 Chilean coup d'état that overthrew Salvador Allende's left-wing government and instituted a 16-year-long right-wing military dictatorship that left more than 3,000 people dead or missing.[10] The regime headed by Augusto Pinochet ended in 1990 after it lost a referendum in 1988 and was succeeded by a centre-left coalition which ruled through four presidencies until 2010.
Chile is today one of South America's most stable and prosperous nations.[10] It leads Latin American nations in rankings of human development, competitiveness, income per capita, globalization, state of peace, economic freedom, and low perception of corruption.[11] It also ranks high regionally in sustainability of the state, and democratic development.[12] Chile is a founding member of the United Nations, the Union of South American Nations and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States. Punta Arenas/Chile:
Punta Arenas is a commune and the capital city of Chile's southernmost region, Magallanes and Antartica Chilena. The city was officially renamed Magallanes in 1927, but in 1938 it was changed back to Punta Arenas. It is the largest city south of the 46th parallel south. As of 1977 Punta Arenas has been one of only two free ports in Chile.[4]
Located on the Brunswick Peninsula north of the Strait of Magellan, Punta Arenas was originally established by the Chilean government in 1848 as a tiny penal colony to assert sovereignty over the Strait. During the remainder of the 1800s, Punta Arenas grew in size and importance due to the increasing maritime traffic and trade traveling to the west coasts of South and North America. This period of growth also resulted from the waves of immigrants attracted to the gold rush and sheep farming boom in the 1880s and early 1900s. The largest sheep company, controlling 10,000 square kilometres in Chile and Argentina, was based in Punta Arenas, and its owners lived there.
Since its founding Chile has used Punta Arenas as a base to defend its sovereignty claims in the southernmost part of South America. This led, among other things, to the Strait of Magellan being recognized as Chilean territory in the Boundary treaty of 1881 between Chile and Argentina. The geopolitical importance of Punta Arenas has remained high in the 20th and 21st centuries because of its logistic importance in accessing the Antarctic Peninsula.Punta Arenas has a population of over 127,000 inhabitants (2012 Census). According to the 2002 census of the National Statistics Institute, the Punta Arenas commune has 119,496 inhabitants (60,616 men and 58,880 women). Of these, 116,005 (97.1%) lived in urban areas and 3,491 (2.9%) in rural areas. The population grew by 5.1% (5,830 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses. It further rose to 127,454 at the 2012 Census.[3]
The city was populated by many colonists from Spain and Croatia in the mid-nineteenth century and many of their descendants still live there. Other national ethnic groups represented are German, English, Italian, Swiss, and Irish.
Croatian immigration to Punta Arenas was a crucial development in the region of Magallanes and the city in particular. Currently, this influence is still reflected in the names of shops, streets and many buildings. According to some references, some 50% of the population of Punta Arenas are ethnic Croats.

0:12:26 Iguassu Falls - I spend 2 days exploring the world's widest waterfall on both the Brazil and Argentina side.
0:19:23 Buenos Aires, Argentina - I spend my short one night stay in the heart of downtown just steps from the Obelisk and Republic Square. A late night dinner and tango show is followed by a short tour of the city the next morning.
0:23:21 Star Princess - The start of my 16-day voyage around the horn of South America and through the Antarctic Peninsula.
0:25:20 Montevideo, Uruguay - Weather was perfect as I toured this beautiful city on the northern bank of the Río de la Plata.
0:30:04 Southern Atlantic Ocean - Dolphins swimming in the Ocean and the Captain's Gala Welcome Reception were the highlights of this beautiful day at sea.
0:34:03 Southern Atlantic Ocean - The weather turns cooler as we near the Falkland Islands on this second day at sea.
0:35:18 Stanley, Falkland Islands - We were blessed with an uncharacteristically beautiful day of weather during our stay in this self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom. Our colorful local tour guide was great fun as we toured this very small capital city. Hundreds of Magellanic penguins along the secluded crescent of white sand at Gypsy Cove were a site to behold.
0:44:34 Southern Ocean - We see our first icebergs as we approach the Antarctic Peninsula on this day at sea.
0:45:56 Elephant Island - We were blessed with more great weather on our first day in Antarctica. We rounded Elephant Island, sat in front of the massive Endurance Glacier and circumnavigated Gibbs Island on this day filled with outstanding scenery.
0:52:05 Hope Bay - With glorious sunshine overhead with sailed through Hope Bay and Iceberg Alley. We also got a nice close look at Esperanza Station, the Argentine research base.
0:58:59 Admiralty Bay - Several Polish scientists from the Arctowski Station sailed out to our ship on their rubber zodiacs. A beautiful rainbow crossed the strait as we sailed away from the area.
1:06:20 Neumayer Channel - We dodge icebergs on all sides and stunning scenery abounds as our ship goes as far south as it is legally allowed to travel.
1:25:08 Drake Passage - A very turbulent crossing on this day at sea.
1:30:29 Cape Horn - Weather calms just enough for us to be able to round the notorious Cape Horn at the southern tip of the continent.
1:36:25 Beagle Channel - The sun returns as we sail north between the countries of Chile and Argentina in the scenic Beagle Channel.
1:45:16 Ushuaia, Argentina- Another day of abundant sunshine as we spend the day in Tierra Del Fuego. I take a drive through the Andes Mountains, visit a sled dog kennel and take a wildlife cruise around Lighthouse Les Eclaireurs in the Beagle Channel.
2:11:39 Punta Arenas, Chile - It was a beautiful sunrise in the Strait of Magellan as we approached dolphin filled harbor of Punta Arenas. I spent the morning touring the largest city in Tierra Del Fuego and in the afternoon I ventured out to Otway Sound Penguin Colony.
2:23:19 Chilean Fjords - We didn't have very nice weather as we sailed north up the coast of Chile through the fjords.
2:25:21 Pacific Ocean - Spent the final two days of the cruise enjoying the entertainment on the ship and the Captain's Farewell Party as we sailed north off the coast of Chile toward Valparaiso.
2:44:08 Santiago, Chile - Took a brief tour of the city during our one night stay in the city, the highlight of which was the funicular ride to the top of Cerro San Cristóbal.
2:51:31 Cusco, Peru - Cusco is the historic capital of the Inca Empire and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1983 by UNESCO. We toured this beautiful city and its ruins during our two night stay.
3:07:55 Machu Picchu - It was a long but fun-filled day as we traveled to and from "The Lost City of the Incas."
3:26:27 Lima, Peru - On the final day of my trip I visited the main square in downtown Lima.

Chile, officially the Republic of Chile, is a South American country occupying a long, narrow strip of land between the Andes mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
Chile's northern desert contains great mineral wealth, principally copper. The relatively small central area dominates in terms of population and agricultural resources, and is the cultural and political center from which Chile expanded in the late 19th century when it incorporated its northern and southern regions. Southern Chile is rich in forests and grazing lands, and features a string of volcanoes and lakes. The southern coast is a labyrinth of fjords, inlets, canals, twisting peninsulas, and islands.
In the 19th century, Chile saw significant economic and territorial growth, ending Mapuche resistance in the 1880s and gaining its current northern territory in the War of the Pacific (1879–83) after defeating Peru and Bolivia. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the country experienced severe left-right political polarization and turmoil. This development culminated with the 1973 Chilean coup d'état that overthrew Salvador Allende's left-wing government and instituted a 16-year-long right-wing military dictatorship that left more than 3,000 people dead or missing. The regime headed by Augusto Pinochet ended in 1990 after it lost a referendum in 1988 and was succeeded by a centre-left coalition which ruled through four presidencies until 2010.
Chile is today one of South America's most stable and prosperous nations. It leads Latin American nations in rankings of human development, competitiveness, income per capita, globalization, state of peace, economic freedom, and low perception of corruption. It also ranks high regionally in sustainability of the state, and democratic development. Chile is a founding member of the United Nations, the Union of South American Nations and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.
About 10,000 years ago, migrating Native Americans settled in fertile valleys and coastal areas of what is present-day Chile. Settlement sites from very early human habitation include Monte Verde, Cueva del Milodon and the Pali Aike Crater's lava tube. The Incas briefly extended their empire into what is now northern Chile, but the Mapuche (or Araucanians as they were known by the Spaniards) successfully resisted many attempts by the Inca Empire to subjugate them, despite their lack of state organization. They fought against the Sapa Inca Tupac Yupanqui and his army. The result of the bloody three-day confrontation known as the Battle of the Maule was that the Inca conquest of the territories of Chile ended at the Maule river.
