Join me on another dirty adventure though the heart of Georgetown, Guyana as I revisit the National Cemetery to see what, if any changes have been made since part one of this series was published more than a year ago. Those of you who shared part one helped exert some of the pressure needed to prompt a major change. You got the government to stop turning a blind eye to the dumping of bodies in the abandoned Mortuary which were then allowed to rot and be devoured by scavengers only a few feet from a road little kids use to walk to school every day. You helped highlight the issue so much, someone built a new mortuary only this time it's not a public facility. We must give thanks for change but take a look at this video and ask yourself if that change has gone far enough. Looking at the condition of the cemetery...the resting place of some of Guyana's greatest minds, including the late Dr. Walter Rodney whose grave I went in search of, I found myself filled with sadness, shame, anger and disbelief. The children of Guyana, whose blood, sweat and tears have flooded this land in pursuit of progress and something better for the coming generations...they deserve better than this. I need you to watch this for a reason. To simply call out the administration on corruption in Guyana is to leave myself open to accusations of being aligned with the opposition parties when this is simply not the case. This channel is aligned to oppose injustice, greed and corruption no matter who holds the reigns of power. Take another look at what corruption looks like. Why is this the face of corruption? Look at it this way; this was once a beautiful cemetery in a beautiful city, in a beautiful country. In the space of 20 years it has completely fallen apart. If the government position that we have had 9 consecutive years of economic growth is true then the monies already set aside for maintenance of this and many other spaces should have grown. Looking at these images you wonder where all that money has been diverted to. Where has all the money that once maintained our roads and environment gone? Why are the people once paid to prosecute dumping no longer visible on the streets? Why can't the country afford it's own fleet of garbage trucks, it's own recycling facilities etc. when we can afford the last president setting himself up with a 3million dollar a month retirement package complete with benefits? How come none of the money from the sale of large swathes of our rainforest to Chinese logging companies has made it here or anywhere else I look? Over and over I see citizens stand by and accept the unacceptable. Guyana will only continue to get worse if this happens. Georgetown in particular has almost fully completed it's transformation from the Garden City to the Garbage City over the last two decades. I grew up in this country, no amount of propaganda pushed in my face to convince me Guyana has progressed will convince me it is true. Not when uncivilized practices like this have sprung up and been allowed to flourish. Not when I have eyes and a nose to see and smell for myself. All I ask is that you use your own eyes and your own faculty for critical thought. Guyana needs that more than ever. We must collectively clip the unfolded sun-blocking wings of corruption and cage it. Otherwise, we will never see the light of day. So have a look for yourself, we visit the new mortuary, I find Walter Rodney's grave and you get to fall into a ditch with me from a safe distance. Fun in the sun?
