Finlandia, Op. 26 is a symphonic poem by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. The first version was written in 1899, and it was revised in 1900. The piece was composed for the Press Celebrations of 1899, a covert protest against increasing censorship from the Russian Empire, as the last of seven pieces, each performed as an accompaniment to a tableau depicting episodes from Finnish history.
The premiere was on 2 July 1900 in Helsinki with the Helsinki Philharmonic Society conducted by Robert Kajanus. A typical performance takes anywhere from 7½ to 9 minutes.
A recurrent joke within Finland at this time was the renaming of Finlandia at various musical concerts so as to avoid Russian censorship. Titles under which the piece masqueraded were numerous, a famously flippant example being Happy Feelings at the awakening of Finnish Spring.
Most of the piece is taken up with rousing and turbulent music, evoking the national struggle of the Finnish people. But towards the end, a calm comes over the orchestra, and the serenely melodic Finlandia Hymn is heard. Often incorrectly cited as a traditional folk melody, the Hymn section is of Sibelius's own creation.
Although initially composed for orchestra, in 1900 Sibelius arranged the entire work for solo piano.
Sibelius later reworked the Finlandia Hymn into a stand-alone piece. This hymn, with words written in 1941 by Veikko Antero Koskenniemi, is one of the most important national songs of Finland (though Maamme is the national anthem). With different words, it is also sung as a Christian hymn (Be Still, My Soul), and was the national anthem of the short-lived African state of Biafra (Land of the Rising Sun).

Jean Sibelius, egl. Johan Julius Christian Sibelius, 1865-1957, Finnish composer. Musician Name Jean Sibelius, which he used since 1886, is derived from the nickname Janne from childhood. Sibelius' native language was Swedish, but high school in Hämeenlinna Normallyceum in Hämeenlinna (fi. Hämeenlinna) demanded Finnish skills and gave him thus its bilingualism.
Despite precocious skills as a violinist and composer Sibelius began in 1885, studied law at the University of Helsinki. The following year he interrupted, however studies and became a student in composition with Martin Wegelius in Helsinki Musikförenings Music Department (as 1939 was the Sibelius Academy), later followed by studies in Berlin and Vienna.
After his return in 1891 he composed his first Kalevala-inspired work, Kullervo, showing an amazing safety in the treatment of choir and orchestra. 1890s poetic and political commitment culminated in 1899 with the symphonic poem Finlandia. It was received with enthusiasm as first and 2 Symphony (respectively 1899 and 1902), and a government scholarship allowed him to fully devote himself to composition. Sibelius' international fame grew steadily in the following years, he traveled a lot and had great success as a conductor of his own works. In 1926 he wrote his last orchestral work, the symphonic poem Tapiola, and in the last three decades of his life he composed not. For an eighth symphony, which according to his own messages to be completed 1929, is nothing more than delivered.

Sibelius is primarily known for his seven symphonies and symphonic poems. His more than one hundred solo songs with piano, mainly to Swedish texts surpasses in quality his many small piano compositions, but - certainly for linguistic reasons - not achieved the distribution they deserve. Influences from Berlioz, Wagner and Tchaikovsky are completely assimilated into one from the outset deeply personal and compelling symphonic style. When every symphony has its individual characteristics, it is not least Sibelius' incessant quest to shape the plant from the musical material.
The crown of this development is the seventh symphony in which Sibelius realized generations quest for symphonic unity, as he summarizes the musical material in a continuous process, a thematic metamorphosis of overwhelming effect. Sibelius' undisputed rank as one of Finland's most important artist figures can be explained by the combination of his highly original style, his heartfelt solidarity with the Finnish nature and myth and his alleged historical-national consciousness. He had a genuine interest in folk music, but never tried to mimic or incorporate Finnish folk tunes in his musical universe.
Jean Sibelius died on 20.9.1957 in the evening, and during high profile train 17,000 people parting with the coffin at a memorial service at the cathedral in Helsinki on 29.9.1957. He is buried in the Ainola Farm in Träskända (fi. Järvenpää), which was his home from 1904 and today is a state museum.
Since 2011, Sibelius day, the Gulf of Music application's Day, has been selected as the official Flag Day in Finland on 8 December.

Skogsrået (The Wood Nymph)
Op. 15 Skogsrået (The Wood Nymph), symphonic poem (ballad); based on a poem by Viktor Rydberg of the same name. Completed 1894-95; first public performance in Helsinki, 17th April 1895 (Orchestra of Helsinki Orchestral Society under Jean Sibelius). Arrangement as a play with music (for narrator, piano, two French horns and strings), first public performance in the premises of the Helsinki Club, 9th March 1895; piano arrangement of the final sequence (Ur "Skogsrået") 1895.
An early sketch of Skogsrået or The Wood Nymph may have been included in the plan for an opera in the summer of 1894. In addition to the opera (The Building of the Boat), Sibelius was planning a stage work about an unfaithful student. According to a theory presented by the musicologist Veijo Murtomäki, the "march-like musical piece" which Sibelius mentioned in a letter of 10th August 1894 could be the opening sequence of The Wood Nymph, while the trip to the forest would be the second sequence, the descriptions of unfaithfulness and sensual love the third sequence and the funeral march the finale of the work.
However, towards the end of 1894 the plan became more specific, and Sibelius decided to base the work on Viktor Rydberg's Skogsrået. In March 1895 Sibelius completed "the first sketch" of The Wood Nymph -- a play with music, for narrator, strings, two French horns and piano. It was performed on the occasion of a lottery at the premises of the Helsinki Club, on 9th March 1895.
Viktor Rydberg's text related the adventures of the hero Björn in the forest, where evil dwarfs are carrying out their malicious schemes and a curvaceous wood nymph lures Björn into making love to her. The spell he is under cannot be broken: Björn can no longer love his wife. Nor does he feel like working. He dies alone and full of yearning.
The orchestral version of The Wood Nymph was performed on 17th April 1895. The Wagnerian features of this erotically charged work were now more obvious than before. According to Merikanto The Wood Nymph included strange and enchanting colours, but one had to know the content of the poem to understand it. "And indeed, the audience were very attentive in following the content of the composition from the programme notes," he wrote.
In his opinion Sibelius's music had changed: it had gained in clarity as compared with its earlier "excessively passionate and incoherent fumbling".
The Wood Nymph remained in Sibelius's concert programmes for years. For instance, it was performed in 1899 when the first symphony had its first public performance. Although the piece was basically well worked-out, Sibelius never prepared the manuscript for publication. It gradually sank into oblivion with the exception of a single performance in 1936. Then, in the late 1990s, the work was again thrust into the international spotlight after the Lahti Symphony Orchestra had played and recorded it.
Opinions of the work have varied. Erik Tawaststjerna did not regard the composition as "central" to Sibelius's output, arguing that the composer "did not succeed in merging the different materials into a coherent whole". The composer Kalevi Aho took the same view: "An interesting work which would have needed more polishing."
The Sibelius scholar Veijo Murtomäki has defended The Wood Nymph: "One of the finest moments in the work is the modal-diatonic sound field which starts after the majestic opening and lasts for several minutes, bringing to mind Gorecki's third symphony!"
The opening is is indeed majestic, with an impressive theme in C major portraying Björn. After that we experience that long, almost minimalist "sound field", which ends with the return of the heroic theme. In the third episode we witness the meeting of Björn and the Wood Nymph. The long instrumental line from the cellos produces an extremely erotic atmosphere. However, the atmosphere changes to melancholy in the final episode, which depicts the hopeless yearning of the hero.
In The Wood Nymph, the listener can admire the young Sibelius's sensual orchestration and glowing tone colours.

Third symphony op. 52 (1907)
Op. 52 Symphony no. 3 in C major:
1. Allegro moderato, 2. Andantino con moto, quasi allegretto, 3. Moderato - Allegro ma non tanto.
The Danish National Symphony Orchestra
Leif Segerstam, conductor.
Completed in 1907; first performance in Helsinki, 25th September 1907 (Orchestra of Helsinki Philharmonic Society under Jean Sibelius).
Sibelius's third symphony has been regarded as more classical than his previous works. The scholar Gerald Abraham has argued that the first movement bears strong comparison with the first movements of Haydn's and Mozart's symphonies. Against this background, it seems all the more remarkable that the history of its composition has turned out to be quite complicated.
Influences from Finnish folk music are discernible in the very first chords of the symphony. There were also some programmatic notions behind it. In Paris in January 1906, after a period of lively celebrations, Sibelius played three themes to the painter Oscar Parviainen. These were: Funeral March, A Prayer to God and A Great Feast. The scholar Markku Hartikainen has shown that these themes were probably connected with Jalmari Finne's libretto for the oratorio Marjatta, which Sibelius did not manage to compose despite several attempts. However, the Prayer to God theme ended up as a hymn theme within the finale of the third symphony -- and it also appeared on the wall at Ainola, for the theme inspired Oscar Parviainen to produce a painting for Sibelius.
In 1906 Sibelius completed the orchestral poem Pohjola's Daughter. The sketches for the work contain material which ended up in the third symphony. Thus, it seems that the symphony, which in itself was heard as a non-programmatic work, received - as is often the case with Sibelius - its initial stimulus from various programmatic ideas; these lost their programmatic meaning during the process of composition as the material was reworked in purely musical terms.
Sibelius conducted the first public performance on 25th September 1907. The reviews were mixed: Karl Flodin praised the work, but the Helsingin Sanomat reviewer claimed that the direct impact of the work was weaker than that of the first symphony.
Stylistically, Sibelius was now approaching notions of Neoclassical music in ways that his friend Ferruccio Busoni would write about a short time later. Sibelius's third symphony is more condensed than its predecessors. Now there are three movements instead of four, since the scherzo and the finale are combined more organically than in the second symphony.
Romanticism is replaced by functionalism, and the orchestration is lighter than before, with no tuba or harp. In his old age Sibelius was of the opinion that the third symphony need not be performed with an orchestra of more than fifty players.
From time to time the rhythm becomes as important as the melodic material. In this way Sibelius anticipated the rhythmic innovations of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring.
The symphony begins with a pithy main motif in the cellos and the basses. As no underpinning harmony is heard, the melody, apparently in C major, can also be regarded as a reminiscence of the Kalevala melody which Sibelius wrote down during his journey in 1892, when he set out to collect traditional poems and songs.

Allegro moderato en re menor , y en 2/2 hora

This historic clip shows Jean Sibelius at his home, Ainola. The first moving images of Jean Sibelius dates from the spring of 1927, when he was filmed at Ainola by the Finnish cinematographers Heikki Aho and Björn Soldan. Aho and Soldan were the sons of the noveliest Juhani Aho, and had grown up in the close vicinity of Sibelius and his family.
In the 1927 film, we see an urbane and relaxed Sibelius on the Lake Tuusula road. The images are striking: in his bowler hat, the composer has a casual, Anglo-Saxon air which differs from later portrayals of the Karsh-ian Sibelius as the brooding and forbidding musical titan.
The documentary also provides intimate glimpses of family life at Ainola: we see a happy Aino in the role of home-maker and her daughters picking apples in the garden (one runs up the path that would eventually lead to Sibelius's final resting place). Their father reads the newspaper and contentedly puffs on his cigar.
In one scene, Soldan's camera catches the composer at work at the piano; another shows his daughter Margareta playing a violin solo, caught against the light filtering through a window.
In 1945, shortly before his 80th birthday, Sibelius agreed to be filmed again by a Finnish film team. This time, Aho and Soldan show us a very different Sibelius, the aged composer watching the forests, cranes and lakes, full of autumnal nostalgia.

Jean Sibelius was the most significant figure in the formation of Finland’s musical identity. Beyond the
famous symphonies and tone poems he was prolific in other genres, including music for the theatre.
King Christian II and Kuolema ensured Sibelius’s fame throughout Europe, the latter including the
haunting melody (track 2) which would later become the Valse triste. The Two Songs from Twelfth Night
contrast the spectre of death with more comical moods, an effect also to be heard in one of Sibelius’s
least performed orchestral works, the Overture in A minor.
