- Which are better, static or dynamic languages?
- Which are better, types or tests?
- Which are better, Take That or NSYNC?
I think people often talk across each other because each side doesn't understand how to use the other's tools effectively. And while much is written and spoken about how to write good unit tests, most of us are not trained in how to write good types. So rather than attempt to answer those questions definitively, I want to help you understand what's at stake.In this code-centric talk you'll learn some practical, real-world tactics to improve the feedback you get from the compiler, beginning with simple techniques and diving deeper to advanced ones. We'll see how types can help you safely drop down the ladder of abstraction when you need to make code fast. I'll also give you a taste of the philosophy underlying this style of programming. And by the end of the talk, no one will need to argue online any more.

When you move from a monolithic architecture towards a distributed microservices setup, it makes some things easier, but other things become harder. Testing is one of those things that has a bit of both. Compared to a monolith, your tests probably have a lot more APIs they can access - each individual microservice can be tested in isolation, with the rest of the system mocked or stubbed. This can be really useful - you can have greater confidence that the parts of your system work by themselves - even quite large parts. In my experience, you don’t get away from the need for end-to-end tests entirely though. There can still be integration errors between the services. If you can write tests that exercise your whole system while none of your own services are replaced by a test double, you can find some pretty important issues, before you deploy to production.
I’ve heard that many teams working with large-scale microservices architectures are using techniques like incremental roll-out and testing in production, and don’t do a lot of testing in a staging or pre-production environment. I don’t think there’s necessarily a either-or decision to make there, and I think it’s worth doing some end-to-end tests before your code reaches the production infrastructure.
In this talk I’ll share my experiences handling end-to-end automated tests in a pre-production environment, and some techniques I’ve found particularly useful.
The first technique, is to make the tests talk the same protocols as the microservices. So the tests submit requests via REST, then listen to all the relevant traffic being sent between the services while the request is processed. The second technique I use is Approval Testing, which allows me to verify the correct messages are being passed, without test maintenance costs getting out of control. The third technique is not so much about the actual tests, but about how you configure your deployment pipeline so that the tests give the most useful feedback to development teams. This is all about resolving the conflict that arises when you want to keep services and teams working independently, while having tests that check they work together correctly.

Just as Marty (Michael J. Fox) is readjusting to his romantic life in 1985, Doc (Christopher Lloyd) whisks him away to the future.

Things have barely settled from the excitement and resolve of the original Back to the Future, when in pops that crazy inventor Dr. Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) with news that in order to prevent a series of events that could ruin the McFly name for posterity, Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox ) and his girlfriend are whisked into the future to the year 2015, where Marty must tangle with a teen rogue named Griff, who's obviously the descendant of Biff, the first Future film's bully. Marty foils Griff and his group when he jumps on an air-foil skateboard that flies him through town at rakish speeds with the loser bullies beaten again. Marty gets a money-making brainstorm before hopping in the time-traveling DeLorean, and he purchases a sports almanac. He figures that back in 1985 he'll be able to place sure-fire bets using the published sports scores of the games that are yet to happen. Unfortunately for Marty, Dr. Brown disapproves of his betting scheme -- he feels too much messing with time is very dangerous -- and he tosses the almanac. A hidden Biff overhears the discussion about the almanac, sees it get tossed out, and grabs it. Thus begins a time-traveling swirl to make the head spin. Biff swipes the DeLorean, heads back to 1955, and with the help of the unerring almanac, bets his way to power. The now-altered "Biff world" has turned into a nightmarish scene with Biff the mogul, residing in a Vegas-styled pleasure palace and running everything. It's all our hero Marty can do to pull the pieces together this time, as he must jump between three generations of intertwined time travel. The end of Back to the Future, Part 2 introduces its sequel as the zany professor has already time-dashed away to the Wild West of the late 1800s and invites Marty into a new adventure.

Star Wars
Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise, centered on a film series created by George Lucas. It depicts the adventures of various characters "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away".

A hidden Biff overhears the discussion about the almanac, sees it get tossed out, and grabs it. Thus begins a time-traveling swirl to make the head spin. Biff swipes the DeLorean, heads back to 1955, and with the help of the unerring almanac, bets his way to power. The now-altered "Biff world" has turned into a nightmarish scene with Biff the mogul, residing in a Vegas-styled pleasure palace and running everything. It's all our hero Marty can do to pull the pieces together this time, as he must jump between three generations of intertwined time travel. The end of Back to the Future, Part 2 introduces its sequel as the zany professor has already time-dashed away to the Wild West of the late 1800s and invites Marty into a new adventure. When you move from a monolithic architecture towards a distributed microservices setup, it makes some things easier, but other things become harder. Testing is one of those things that has a bit of both. Compared to a monolith, your tests probably have a lot more APIs they can access - each individual microservice can be tested in isolation, with the rest of the system mocked or stubbed. This can be really useful - you can have greater confidence that the parts of your system work by themselves - even quite large parts. This can be really useful - you can have greater confidence that the parts of your system work by themselves - even quite large parts. In my experience, you don’t get away from the need for end-to-end tests entirely though. There can still be integration errors between the services. If you can write tests that exercise your whole system while none of your own services are replaced by a test double, you can find some pretty important issues, before you deploy to production.
I’ve heard that many teams working with large-scale microservices architectures are using techniques like incremental roll-out and testing in production, and don’t do a lot of testing in a staging or pre-production environment. I don’t think there’s necessarily a either-or decision to make there, and I think it’s worth doing some end-to-end tests before your code reaches the production infrastructure.
In this talk I’ll share my experiences handling end-to-end automated tests in a pre-production environment, and some techniques I’ve found particularly useful.
The first technique, is to make the tests talk the same protocols as the microservices. Just as Marty (Michael J. Fox) is readjusting to his romantic life in 1985, Doc (Christopher Lloyd) whisks him away to the future.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Things have barely settled from the excitement and resolve of the original Back to the Future, when in pops that crazy inventor Dr. Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) with news that in order to prevent a series of events that could ruin the McFly name for posterity, Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox ) and his girlfriend are whisked into the future to the year 2015, where Marty must tangle with a teen rogue named Griff, who's obviously the descendant of Biff, the first Future film's bully. Marty foils Griff and his group when he jumps on an air-foil skateboard that flies him through town at rakish speeds with the loser bullies beaten again. Marty gets a money-making brainstorm before hopping in the time-traveling DeLorean, and he purchases a sports almanac. He figures that back in 1985 he'll be able to place sure-fire bets using the published sports scores of the games that are yet to happen. Unfortunately for Marty, Dr. Brown disapproves of his betting scheme -- he feels too much messing with time is very dangerous -- and he tosses the almanac. A hidden Biff overhears the discussion about the almanac, sees it get tossed out, and grabs it. Thus begins a time-traveling swirl to make the head spin. Biff swipes the DeLorean, heads back to 1955, and with the help of the unerring almanac, bets his way to power. The now-altered "Biff world" has turned into a nightmarish scene with Biff the mogul, residing in a Vegas-styled pleasure palace and running everything. It's all our hero Marty can do to pull the pieces together this time, as he must jump between three generations of intertwined time travel. The end of Back to the Future, Part 2 introduces its sequel as the zany professor has already time-dashed away to the Wild West of the late 1800s and invites Marty into a new adventure.
