The reporter said the landslide occurred just two meters away from his car. Stones rubble and mud fell down from the hill to the road and a stone about half-size of a tyre bumped onto the road. The landslide came suddenly when our car was about to pass the mountain. Our car immediately drove away without any hesitation... It could be heard that someone was shouting run run and we luckily escaped the landslide recalled He Kang reporter of CCTV s Mianyang Station. The reporter said it was raining hard that day. For security reasons the expressway in the region was under traffic control as landslides happened during the rainstorm. More than 1000-kilometer section of the road was destroyed in a new round of rainstorm and rain-triggered landslides in Shehong County southwest China s Sichuan Province. The accumulated precipitation in Shehong County exceeded 330 millimeters. A section of 54 kilometers of the Provincial Road S205 was destroyed in Shehong County. No casualties in the rainstorm were reported yet. After rush repairs overnight the road resumed traffic on Thursday. The storm started at around 0200 and Suining City to which Shehong belongs issued a rainstorm orange warning at 1000. The maximum rainfall reached 263.2 millimeters and the accumulated water reached about 1.5 meters deep in the area near Taihe Middle School and Yingchun Road. Broken-down vehicles could be seen everywhere and rising river water poured into streets flooding greenbelts and shops and causing much inconvenience to traffic. The rain is heavy like rainstorm. My car couldn t move in a few minutes because its engine shut down. Now it s floating in water said a motorist. The flood water was about 1.5 meters deep in a neighborhood where residential houses are very old. About 150 households were trapped in their buildings. Firefighters transferred them to safe areas by boats and by carrying them on back. The rain is still going on in the city and the local authorities are organizing disaster relief. At the same time thunderstorm hit Meishan City on Monday with 2771 thunders having battered the city. The rainfalls in 36 observations exceeded 50 millimeters and the highest one reached 150.2 millimeters. The city issued yellow and orange rainstorm alerts in succession. The disaster flooded streets in the urban areas and damaged houses and farmland in rural areas. A road section of 200 meters long that links Mingxing Township with the county town was submerged by water with a maximum depth of 1.5 meters. Vehicles moved slowly along a single passage on the Mnyang-Suining highway as workers were clearing away loose earth and stone on the mountain slope in case of another landslide. Eight excavators have been sent to speed up the clearing work. The traffic is expected to resume on Thursday afternoon.
