Thousands of horrifying Abu Ghraib photos may be declassified

The infamous Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq may return to the spotlight if a judge grants a request to make 2,000 prisoner abuse photos public. U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein on Wednesday ruled that the government had not presented a case compelling enough to keep the photos classified. Government lawyers now have one appeal remaining, which must be completed by September 8th. The original photos from the facility leaked to the media in 2004 caused a major headache for the military and government, who suddenly had to answer for why the Iraqi prisoners were being taunted, tortured and inhumanely cared for. NEW YORK A federal judge ruled today that graphic pictures of detainee abuse at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison must be released over government claims that they could damage America's image. Last year a Republican senator conceded that they contained scenes of "rape and murder" and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said they included acts that were "blatantly sadistic." U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein ordered the release of certain pictures in a 50-page decision that said terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan have proven they "do not need pretexts for their barbarism." The ACLU has sought the release of 87 photographs and four videotapes taken at the prison as part of an October 2003 lawsuit demanding information on the treatment of detainees in U.S. custody and the transfer of prisoners to countries known to use torture. Gen. John Abizaid, commander of U.S. Central Command, said Thursday that releasing the photos would hinder his work against terrorism. "When we continue to pick at the wound and show the pictures over and over again it just creates the image--a false image--like this is the sort of stuff that is happening anew, and it's not," Abizaid said. The judge said, however, that "the freedoms that we champion are as important to our success in Iraq and Afghanistan as the guns and missiles with which our troops are armed." An ACLU release this afternoon said it was getting 70 photos and three video tapes. It also said that the government is being given 20 days to appeal. What is shown on the photographs and videos from Abu Ghraib prison that the Pentagon has blocked from release? One clue: Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told Congress last year, after viewing a large cache of unreleased images, "I mean, I looked at them last night, and they're hard to believe." In a nearby house, the acclaimed actress met a family of nine, including children who don't go to school and a baby with a rash all over its body. Jolie rocked the new-born on her lap throughout the visit. A daughter-in-law studied law before the violence forced the family into flight and ended her education. "No way," the family said in unison when asked by Jolie if they wanted to return to their former home district. "Our neighbours returned and their three daughters were killed," the daughter-in-law, Salwa,* said. "Why is this happening to us?," she asked. "They are right to feel that it is not fair," said Jolie, who pledged to return to Iraq. "I want to come back and find you in a better place and in a different situation. We hope that UNHCR and the government will support you in getting a piece of land. You need help not because you are poor, but because you are the future of Iraq," she stressed, adding that she hoped Salwa would be able to become a lawyer. "The picture in this camp is a rough one but there are also some people that were able to return home to other safer areas," Jolie said later. "There are some changes. There are returns of displaced people, not a big number but there is progress." Chikook is home to more than 20,000 people, mostly women and children and including several thousand local people. It lacks drinking water, an operational sewage system and paved roads. The area is littered with garbage, despite a UNHCR-organized clean-up earlier this year. The UN refugee agency has been trucking in potable water for the residents over the past few months, and has worked on the rehabilitation of the water system and conducted minor shelter repairs. UNHCR estimates that 1.6 million Iraqis were internally displaced by a wave of sectarian warfare that erupted in February 2006 after the bombing of a mosque in the ancient city of Samarra. Almost 300,000 have returned to their homes amid a general improvement in the security situation since mid-2008. Since April last year, UNHCR has provided emergency shelter rehabilitation and shelter upgrade to 5,000 families. Close to 20,000 homes will be rehabilitated by the end of this year. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi refugees remain in neighbouring countries, mainly Syria and Jordan. Jolie was making her third trip to Iraq. In August 2007, she visited 1,200 refugees trapped in Al Waleed camp near the border with Syria. And it's not what I was doing down there. This was a law passed by our United States Congress that I worked with the Congress to get passed and sign into law. REPORTER: But it looked like an attempt to bypass the Constitution, to a certain extent. GEORGE W. BUSH: This was a law passed, Adam. We passed a law. Bypassing the Constitution means that we did something outside the bounds of the Constitution. We went to the Congress and got a piece of legislation passed. REPORTER: Which is now being struck down, I think. GEORGE W. BUSH: It is, and I accept what the Supreme Court did, and I necessarily don't have to agree with it. My only point to you is, is that yes, I mean, we certainly wish Abu Ghraib hadn't happened, but that should not reflect America. US defence contractor wants Abu Ghraib lawsuit scrapped

A US defence contractor which supplied interrogators accused of involvement in the abuse and torture of detainees at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq has sought to have a lawsuit against it dismissed, stating its employees were working under military control during a time of war. The plea comes after four former inmates of the prison sued CACI International over the claims. Friday's hearing at the US District Court in Alexandria, Virginia, focused on the "political question doctrine," which in broad terms prevents federal courts from ruling on any issue considered political or US policy, and relegates decisions to issues concerned with the law. CACI has said it can invoke the doctrine in its defence because its civilian contractors were supervised by the US military. "The military exercised complete control. These interrogation techniques were permitted," said defence lawyer John O'Connor. "There has to be a plan for every interrogation." Baher Azmy from the Centre for Constitutional Rights, which is representing the former inmates, said that CACI employees ordered military police to torture the detainees. "It is undisputed that there was a command vacuum when these vicious abuses occurred," he said. "None of them were authorised by the military." Abuses The former prisoners were held at Abu Ghraib prison between 2003 and 2004, during which time they say they were stripped naked, electrocuted, beaten, choked and threatened with death. All four inmates were later released without charge. Upon their release they initiated the al-Shimari versus CACI lawsuit, brought under the Alien Tort Statute, which allows foreign citizens to seek remedy in US court for human rights abuses. Evidence of Abu Ghraib abuses surfaced during former President George W Bush's re-election campaign in 2004, when graphic photos emerged showing inmates piled on top of one another, wired for electric shock, among other scenes. The subsequent backlash damaged US credibility with many criticising the US for grave human rights abuses. The case which was filed in 2008 remains ongoing.

Over 114,000 People Displaced by Fighting in Central Iraq

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has said that more than 114,000 people have been displaced by fighting in Ramadi, a city in central Iraq, and humanitarian agencies and partners continue to respond to the needs of those away from home. Ramadi is located about 110 kilometers west of Iraq's capital, Baghdad. Some 1,100 people in Abu Ghraib District and the Doura area of Baghdad have received core relief items through the UN Refugee Agency. "According to our statistics, we have five new refugees everyday. Pro-government forces have been engaged in intense clashes with Islamic State militants for control of Ramadi. Iraqi commanders say they are rushing police and military reinforcements to Ramadi to prevent the city from being overrun. Street battles have been raging in the city and in outlying suburbs and towns, authorities say. The nearby city of Falluja has been under militant control for over a year. Large numbers of people, including a number of the largest unions, mobilised to show their opposition - not only to the war-mongering president, but also to the invite from those who claim to represent us that brought him here. This footage forms the first half of coverage of a range of events staged over the weekend up to and including the demonstrations on Monday 16th June 2008 that greeted the unwelcome Bush. As with Blair following a similar visit in the dying days of his regime attempting to re-write his legacy as that of a peace-maker, Bush will be remembered instead as someone who has commited crimes against humanity in launching phony wars and against the planet in general in his reckless continued disregard for environmental issues. ******************************************** Statement from the Belfast Anti War Movement following announcement of Bush's visit -------------------------------------------- We are appalled at the news that George Bush will visit Belfast next month. It is disgraceful that his visit is as a result of an invitation issued by the First Minister and Deputy First Minister. This part of the world more than most places has an understanding of the deep damage and pain that war and conflict produces. George Bush is internationally regarded as a warmonger. The so called "war on terror", now rebranded as the "war for democracy" that he has championed has inflicted that damage and pain on countless millions. The world has seen the particular type of Bush "democracy" that was brought to Iraq in the form of the torture photos of prisoners held at Abu Ghraib Prison and the pictures of twisted bodies lying in the streets of Baghdad's marketplaces. There are now over 2 million internally displaced Iraqis who have been forced to flee their homes. There are also over 3 million refugees who have been forced to flee the country completely. According to CNN almost a third of all Iraqi children are suffering from chronic malnutrition and almost three quarters of Iraqi civilians no longer have access to clean water. Bush's phony war has done nothing except create global misery and despair. His justification of the war has been to condemn Muslims as backward fundamentalists prone to violence. This has led to a massive increase in Islamophobia and racist attacks committed against those perceived to be Muslim has risen massively in recent years. Apart from the war, Bush's international crimes include a refusal to sign up to Kyoto and a refusal to do anything meaningful about global warming. This has placed the lives of millions of people in immediate danger due to the freak weather conditions that are already taking place. Longer term, the very planet itself is at risk. Bush has also been responsible for misery much closer to home. Americans rightly accused Bush of leaving the residents of New Orleans to perish following Hurricane Katrina simply because they were black and poor and therefore considered expendable. Whilst he has spent countless billions on the war he has left millions of Americans without a proper healthcare system and a proper social security infrastructure. Bush has presided over a country where ordinary working people have seen their conditions deteriorate massively. While the poor have gotten poorer, the rich have gotten richer. George Bush is the most unpopular President in US history. According to the Washington Post his current approval rating is less that thirty percent. George Bush is not liked in the US and he is not liked here. It is not surprising that media blogs following the announcement were filled with messages condemning the visit. When George Bush visits here in June we will make sure that he is followed by protests wherever he goes. We call on all of those who oppose this visit to ensure that they are on those protests and that they make their voices heard. OUR MESSAGE IS CLEAR: GEORGE BUSH IS NOT WANTED HERE .
