Kurdish women (Kurdish: Jinên/Afiretên Kurd) have traditionally played important roles in Kurdish history, society and politics.
Sharaf ad-Din Bitlisi's 1597 Sharafnāma mentions three Kurdish women assuming power in Kurdish principalities. Evliya Çelebi also noted that Kurdish women did occasionally assume power in Kurdistan and Ottoman authorities accepted the succession in those principalities by a female ruler.
In the late 19th century, Lady Halima of Hakari was the ruler of Bash Kala until she was forced to surrender to the Ottoman government after the suppression of Bedir Khan revolt in 1847. A young Kurdish woman named Fatma became chief of the Ezdinan tribe in 1909 and she was known among her tribe as the queen. During the World War I, Russian forces negotiated their safe passage through tribal territory with Lady Maryam of the famous Nehri family, who according to Basile Nikitine, wielded great authority among her followers. Lady Adela, ruler of Halabja, exerted great influence in the affairs of Jaf tribe in the Shahrazur plain on the Turco-Iranian frontier. The revival of commerce and restoration of law and order in the region of Halabja is attributed to her sound judgement.

Since the start of the Syrian war, nearly 13.6 million people have been displaced, crossing bridges and passing through checkpoints at great peril to escape the violence. Mosul is one of the towns to recently fall under IS control. "IS controls everyone's daily routine. Everything you hear about them is true", says a man who fled the town. He has made it to Erbil, recently recaptured by Kurd forces, who are waging a bloody war with Islamic State to protect their land. Gunfights, car bombs and aerial attacks are a daily reality for the soldiers and the displaced who occupy this zone, mere kilometres from the waving flags of the Islamic State.

A year after the Islamic State's lightning conquest of Iraq's second-largest city of Mosul, the poorly-trained and equipped Kurdish peshmerga forces are the international coalition's only reliable boots on the ground in northern Iraq.
The Pentagon's hopes of recapturing the city by spring 2015 have been dashed by the military failures of the Iraqi Army further south, leaving the peshmerga to defend a 600-mile long frontline almost encircling Mosul, fending off constant Islamic State (IS) assaults with insufficient supplies of ammunition and modern weapons.
For one month, VICE News embedded with the peshmerga fighters on the Mosul frontline, gaining an insight into the coalition's faltering war against IS through the eyes of the Kurdish volunteers bearing the brunt of the fighting.

Newly released footage shows Kurdish YPG fighters in battle with IS militants inside of Kobane.
The fighting errupted after militants infiltrated and attacked the city from 3 sides by using civilian cars and YPG uniforms to sneak inside the town.
It is unclear how IS fighters managed to get inside the town since all the surrounding area and villages are under YPG cotnrol accoring to Kurdish statements.
The Kurds actually accuse Turkey for being behind the recent attack by letting IS militants infiltrate the town from their side of the border.
Fighting newly enflamed after Kurdish YPG troops took full control over the town at the end of January after heavy clashes in a four-month siege.
This footage is part of an ongoing documentary of the war in Syria through raw combat footage.

As the battle between Kurds and Islamic State militants rages on in the Syrian border town of Kobane, Kurds in neighboring Turkey are becoming increasingly angry at the Turkish government's failure to intervene. And so protestors have taken to the streets in cities such as Ankara and Istanbul to show their support for both the Kurds fighting in Kobane and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a resistance group in Turkey classified as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, and several other Western nations.
VICE News traveled to Istanbul, where a memorial march for two fighters who died in Kobane devolved into a night of chaos. Amid clouds of police teargas, we spoke to members of a PKK youth wing as they threw Molotov cocktails and shouted support for Kurds in Turkey and Kobane.

For over a year Kurdish forces have united in defence against bloody IS attacks. So how have Islamic State still managed to recruit hundreds of young Kurds to fight for the Caliphate against their own families?
"There are Kurdish families in Halabja whose sons are in IS and their hearts are broken, but I'll never go to their funerals", says the grieving mother of Kaihan Borhan, a Kurd who died fighting with the Peshmarga against IS. Her family is distraught that the people responsible for his death could well be Kurdish nationals. "I have a friend whose brother died fighting for ISIS", says Kaihan's brother. "I never grieved for him and my friend cannot bear to look me in the eye." In this report we see the path to extremism that many Kurds have taken. Dissatisfaction at the Kurdish Intelligence service, Asayish's persecution of Muslims and domestic grievances are being skilfully exploited by IS propaganda, led by Khattab Al-Kurdi and his Saladin Brigade. "With God's permission we will sow the seeds of the Caliphate throughout our land", says the Kurdish Khattab, who has been one of the most persuasive forces in luring Kurds towards the Caliphate. Even with Khattab's reported death in April 2015, the threat of more Kurds joining IS seems unlikely to diminish, with a new Kurdish Imam carrying the rhetoric forward.

For last few weeks the #Kurdish town of Kobani in Syrian Kurdistan is surrounded by ISIS terrorist, brave female Kurdish fighters with some light Soviet arms fight the heavy equipped ISIS terrorist.
As in Syria, the main focus in recent days has been on the mainly Kurdish town of Kobani near the Turkish border, where both female and male Kurdish defenders have been trying to halt an advance by fighters who have driven 200,000 refugees across the border.
The IS jihadists, all foreigners, have laid siege to the town for nearly four weeks and fought their way into it in recent days, taking control of almost half of the town. A U.N. envoy has said thousands of people could be massacred if Kobani falls. (Video Courtesy: History Tube)

PKK is a Kurdish militant organization from 1984 to 2013 fought an armed struggle against the Turkish state for cultural and political rights and self-determination for the Kurds in Turkey, Kurdish people comprise between 20% and 25% of the population and have been subjected to official repression for decades. The group was founded in 1978 in the village of Fis (near Lice) by a group of Kurdish students led by Abdullah Öcalan. The PKK's ideology was originally a fusion of revolutionary socialism and Kurdish nationalism, seeking the foundation of an independent, Marxist–Leninist state in the region known as Kurdistan. Since his capture and imprisonment in 1999, the leader of the PKK, Abdullah Öcalan, has abandoned Marxism-Leninism, leading the party to adopt his new political platform of "Democratic Confederalism" (influenced strongly by the libertarian socialist philosophy of communalism).
The name 'PKK' is usually used interchangeably for the name of its armed wing, the People's Defence Force (HPG), which was formerly called the Kurdistan National Liberty Army (ARGK).

Kurds are a group related to Europeans in Linguistics and DNA. During the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Treaty of Sevres outlined the creation of a Kurdish Nation in present day Turkey, Syria, and Iraq.
