The Bear heads up Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England (3,209 ft/ 978m). The route began near Wasdale Head in the Lake District. ***** The Bear went up this mountain alone but in order to do this safely he made sure several people knew exactly where he would be. He provided them with a copy of the map with his route planned on it and the times of climbing and descending. He did not deviate from travelling along this route. He also made sure of the weather before he went up the mountain, checking that although it was due to rain, there were no thunderstorms forecast. His pack was loaded with a basic 24 hour survival kit which included map, compass, whistle, food, water (2 litres minimum), water purification tablets, a fire making kit and waterproof clothing. ***** The Bear also says that in order to attempt Scafell Pike safely you must have basic map reading skills, a map of the Pike and a working compass that has been tested before hand.
