On Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness"
Is Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" a masterpiece of art? Or is it, as Chinua Achebe persuasively argues, a racist and deplorable book? What are we to make of Kurtz's dying words, "The horror! The horror!"? Could we read these words as his passing judgment on his own life? Can language even convey or communicate moral truths? Or are our ethical assertions only expressions of our personal attitudes? Ar

Or are our ethical assertions only expressions of our personal attitudes? Are Kurtz and Marlow's dubious response to him fair portraits of moral subjectivism? Is the human heart, like nature itself, ultimately inscrutable?

WLIT covers a story about Imperialism around the Congo River. Discusses the novel "Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad and its theme of Imperialism and the conquest of darkness through the use of imagery, characterization, satire, symbolism, and conflict.
Quotes in order of use:
“They grabbed what they could get for the sake of what was to be got. It was just robbery with violence, aggravated murder on a great scale, and men going at it blind—as is very proper for those who tackle a darkness.” (page 8)
“I was loafing about, hindering you fellow in your work and invading your homes, just as though I had got a heavenly mission to civilize you.” (page 9)
“A nigger was being beaten near by. They said he had caused the fire in some way… afterwards he arose and went out—and the wilderness without a sound took him into its bosom again.” (page 28)
“I noticed a small sketch in oils, on a panel, representing a woman, draped and blindfolded, carrying a lighted torch. The background was somber—almost black. The movement of the woman was stately, and the effect of the torchlight on the face was sinister.” (page 30)
“They only showed that Mr. Kurtz lacked restraint in the gratification of his various lusts, that there was something wanting in him—some small matter which, when the pressing need arose, could not be found under his magnificent eloquence.” (page 70)
“The wilderness had found him out early, and had taken on him a terrible vengeance for the fantastic invasion. I think it had whispered to him things about himself which he did not know, things of which he had no conception till he took counsel with this great solitude—and the whisper had proved irresistibly fascination. It echoed loudly within him because he was hollow at the core.” (page 70)
“We penetrated deeper and deeper into the heart of darkness. It was very quiet there. At night sometimes the roll of drums behind the curtain of trees would run up the river and remain sustained faintly, as if hovering in the air high over our heads, till the first break of day. Whether it meant war, peace, or prayer we could not tell. The dawns were heralded by the descent of a chill stillness; the woodcutters slept, their fires burned low; the snapping of a twig would make you start.” (page 43)
“I seemed at one bound to have been transported into some lightless region of subtle horrors, where pure, uncomplicated savagery was a positive relief, being something that had a right to exist—obviously—in the sunshine.” (page 71)
“Black, flat wall of the woods.” (page 78)

Hugh WALPOLE (1884 - 1941)
This is a literary biography of Joseph Conrad (1857 – 1924) who is regarded as one of the greatest novelists in English. He was granted British nationality in 1886, but always considered himself a Pole. Though he did not speak English fluently until he was in his twenties (and always with a marked accent), he was a master prose stylist who brought a distinctly non-English sensibility into English literature. He wrote stories and novels, many with a nautical setting, that depict trials of the human spirit. Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole, CBE (1884 – 1941) was an English novelist. He was the son of an Anglican clergyman, intended for a career in the church but drawn instead to writing. Among those who encouraged him were the authors Henry James and Arnold Bennett. His skill at scene-setting, vivid plots, and high profile as a lecturer brought him a large readership in the United Kingdom and North America. He was a best-selling author in the 1920s and 1930s, but has been largely neglected since his death.... Joseph Conrad said of him, "We see Mr. Walpole grappling with the truth of things spiritual and material with his characteristic earnestness, and we can discern the characteristics of this acute and sympathetic explorer of human nature." - Summary by wikipedia and david wales
