C.S. Lewis takes a look at the heartless, frigid philosophy contained in modern elementary textbooks on English Literature. This is an illustration of the first chapter of 'The Abolition of Man’ as it can be particularity hard to digest with its more than fifty literary references. This will ease you into chapters 2 and 3. Lewis mentioned in a letter to a friend that 'The Abolition of Man' was: “almost my favourite among my books, but in general has been almost totally ignored by the public” (20 February 1955). I hope this doodle starts to rectify that ignorance...60 years after Lewis penned this letter.
In order to help you understand the meaning of the quotes, I have hunted down all of Lewis’ quotations and allusions in their original context, including the infamous ‘Green Book’ itself. I have collated the original quotes, in their original context, and provided them as endnotes to a PDF document as a study aid. A most informative read, for those who wish to know more. 'The Green Book' really has to be read to be believed! It makes the blood boil, and it is abundantly clear why Lewis felt such a strong need to write this book: 'The Abolition of Man'.

Lewis: The new Psychology was at that time sweeping through us all. We were all influenced. We were all concerned about fantasy, or wishful thinking. I formed the resolution of always judging and acting with the greatest good sense.
Walter Hooper: He was saying that all youth at that time were trying to escape from wish fulfillment dreams. They got that from Freud. And they wanted to in one way spit on the images of their youth, and go onto they knew not what. But, anyway, leave that behind because it was juvenile.
Lewis: I was at that time living like many atheists; in a whirl of contradictions. I maintained that God did not exist. I was also very angry with God for not existing. I was equally angry with him for creating a world. Why should creatures have the burden of existence forced on them without their consent?
Lewis: All the books were beginning to turn against me. Indeed, I must have been as blind as a bat not to have seen, long before, the ludicrous contradiction between my theory of life and my actual experiences as a reader. The most religious were clearly those on whom I could really feed.
Lewis: I can only describe it as the Great War between Barfield and me. When I set out to correct his heresies, I find that he had decided to correct mine! And then we went at it, hammer and tongs, far into the night, night after night.
Duriez: Barfield believed that the imagination plays a very important part in how we know. He rejected the model that science is the only way to truth, to acquiring truth. He felt that the imagination was laid behind even the work of science. It gave meaning to propositions. And so he felt that Lewis was missing out in his whole approach to reality on what made knowledge possible.
Peter Kreeft: When Lewis talks about joy, he talks about something that he labels the central theme of his whole life. But what he means by joy is not the satisfaction of a desire, but a desire that is more desirable than any satisfaction.
Lewis: There was no doubt Joy was a desire. But a desire is turned not to itself, but to an object. I had been wrong in supposing that I desired for Joy itself. All value lay in that of which Joy was the desiring. The naked other. Unknown, undefined, desired. I did not yet ask "Who is desired?"
Kreeft: The very experience of Joy that Lewis had was an arrow that led to the target of belief in God. Lewis argued innate, deep desires do not exist unless they correspond to something that can satisfy them. If there is hunger, there is food. If there is sexual desire, there is sex. If there is curiosity, there is knowledge. So if there is the desire for this thing that is beyond this world, there must be something beyond this world.
Lewis: The fox had now been dislodged from the wood and was running in the open, bedraggled and weary, the hounds barely a field behind. The odd thing was that before God closed in on me, I was in fact offered what now appears to be a moment of wholly free choice. I was going up Headington Hill on the top of a bus. Without words, and almost without images, a fact about myself was somehow presented to me. I became aware that I was holding something at bay.
I felt myself being given a free choice. I could open the door or keep it shut. I chose to open. I felt as if I were a man of snow at long last beginning to melt. Drip-drip. And presently trickle-trickle.
I had always wanted, above all things, not to be interfered with. I had wanted — mad wish — to call my soul my own. I had been far more anxious to avoid suffering than to achieve delight.
You must picture me alone in that room at Magdalen, night after night, feeling, whenever my mind lifted even for a second from my work, the steady, unrelenting approach of Him whom I so earnestly desired not to meet.
Total surrender, the absolute leap in the dark, were demanded. I gave in, and admitted that God was God ... perhaps, that night, the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England.

This is an illustration of C.S Lewis’ first talk in the series called ‘What Christians Believe’. This became Chapter 6 in the book called ‘Mere Christianity’. You can find the book here: http://www.amazon.com/Mere-Christianity-C-S-Lewis/dp/0060652926
The original radio broadcast included another powerful metaphysical argument for Theism (see quote below), however, this was a brand new argument at this stage, with none of the counter arguments addressed, so it was removed from the book ‘Mere Christianity’ for simplicity’s sake. You can find this argument fully worked through in chapters 3 and 6 in Lewis’ book called “Miracles" and in various essays.
“There are all sorts of different reasons for believing in God, and here I’ll mention only one. It is this. Supposing there was no intelligence behind the universe, no creative mind. In that case nobody designed my brain for the purpose of thinking. It is merely that when the atoms inside my skull happen for physical or chemical reasons to arrange themselves in a certain way, this gives me, as a by-product, the sensation I call thought. But if so, now can I trust my own thinking to be true? It’s like upsetting the milk-jug and hoping that the way the splash arranges itself will give you a map of London. But if I can’t trust my own thinking, of course I can’t trust the arguments leading to atheism, and therefore have no reason to be an atheist, or anything else. Unless I believe in God, I can‘t believe in thought; so I can never use thought to disbelieve in God.”
Lewis mentioned that Nazism is a form of Pantheism: “Even the German worship of a racial spirit is only Pantheism truncated or whittled down to suit barbarians”. Democracy is founded upon Moral Law/Natural Law and the desire for fair play. I therefore started this production with a Spitfire (representing Christianity) and a Messerschmitt 109 (representing Pantheism) after a dogfight over the Cliffs of Dover on the southern coast of England.
Incidentally it was American conductor and composer, who composed the music for ‘The White Cliffs of Dover’, a song written after the Battle of Britain which looked forward to the return of peace after freedom had been won. Ironically, the ‘Blue Bird’ is a native American bird (Blue Southern English Birds are called ‘Blue Tits’) which turned out to be quite apt, as the United States was to join the war in late 1941 and save Western Europe from, as Churchill put it, “the abyss of a new dark age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science.”

Correction: I discovered from old magazines that this broadcast was actually made on the 3rd of September, 1941 and was Broadcast #5 in series called 'Listener’s Questions'.

(This broadcast took place at the zenith of Nazi power, with the rapid invasion of Russia in full swing and hundreds of thousands of Soviet soldiers being taken prisoner.)
Correction: I discovered from old magazines that this broadcast was actually made on the 3rd of September, 1941 and was Broadcast #5 in series called 'Listener’s Questions'.

Christians claim that the birth, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ is the central chapter of world history. Does this 'Grand Miracle' fit in with the rest of the Author's other work - Nature itself? Do these works show a common author?
This is an illustration of the first half of C.S. Lewis' sermon 'The Grand Miracle', which was a quick summary of Chapter 14 of his Book called ‘Miracles’. You can find fuller explanations there.
You can find the book here: http://www.amazon.com/God-Dock-C-S-Lewis/dp/0802871836
“All the well-established Christian miracles are part of the incarnation; they all either prepare for, or exhibit or result from the incarnation.” By this I take it Lewis means that all the miracles from Genesis to the miraculous conception of John the Baptist prepare for the incarnation, all the miracles during Christ’s time on earth exhibit it, and all those performed by the Apostles and later believers result from it.
God 'incarnate' means God 'made flesh'.

Spirits in Bondage
C. S. LEWIS (1898 - 1963)
Spirits in Bondage is C.S. Lewis’s first book and the first of his works to be available in the public domain. It was released in 1919 under the pseudonym of Clive Hamilton and was written in a period of darker thought for C.S. Lewis than was later evidenced in his Christian apologist writings.
The darkness of the verse is most evident in Part One (The Prison House), begins to change in the short transitional Part Two (Hesitation) and attains a more hopeful tone in the final Part Three (Escape). Yet a dreamy effect, influenced by Celtic and Druid mythology, persists throughout.

Convocation Hall, Theological Hall, Queen's University
Tickets: $25 adults / $22 students/seniors / $12 children / $60 family pass
Imagine a world that is in the middle of winter, waiting for spring. Imagine a world torn by war. It’s not hard to do. Now, imagine that world with talking fauns, unicorns, centaurs and nymphs. This world is Narnia.
This dramatization faithfully recreates the magic and mystery of Aslan, the great lion, his struggle with the White Witch, and the adventures of four children who inadvertently wander from an old wardrobe into the exciting, never-to-be-forgotten Narnia. The intense action features chases, duels and escapes as the witch is determined to keep Narnia in her possession and to end the reign of Aslan.

In 1945, C.S. Lewis published a fictional book called "The Great Divorce" where an man is taken from grim and joyless city (hell/purgatory) to heaven on a bus with several acquaintances. When the bus reaches its destination, they find that they are ghosts and that the country around them is unimaginably beautiful and unyieldingly solid compared to themselves. There, they are given an open invitation to become citizens of this wonderful country if only they would just say 'yes'. The book sets out a number of conversations, some glorious, others heartbreaking, of these celestial citizens trying to urge those from the bus to join them on an eternal journey of excitement, joy, love, and truth; all the while experiencing the direct, intimate presence of God.
Elsewhere, C.S. Lewis wrote: “The Christian says, 'Creatures are not born with desires unless satisfaction for those desires exists. A baby feels hunger: well, there is such a thing as food. A duckling wants to swim: well, there is such a thing as water. Men feel sexual desire: well, there is such a thing as sex. If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.
If none of my earthly pleasures satisfy it, that does not prove that the universe is a fraud. Probably earthly pleasures were never meant to satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing. If that is so, I must take care, on the one hand, never to despise, or to be unthankful for, these earthly blessings, and on the other, never to mistake them for the something else of which they are only a kind of copy, or echo, or mirage.
I must keep alive in myself the desire for my true country, which I shall not find till after death; I must never let it get snowed under or turned aside; I must make it the main object of life to press on to that country and to help others to do the same. "

CRISTIANISMO PURO E SIMPLES (2) - Algumas objeções - C. S. Lewis
