Abraham "Bram" Stoker (8 November 1847 – 20 April 1912) was an Irish novelist and short story writer, best known today for his 1897 Gothic novel Dracula. During his lifetime, he was better known as personal assistant of actor Henry Irving and business manager of the Lyceum Theatre in London, which Irving owned.
Stoker was born on 8 November 1847 at 15 Marino Crescent, Clontarf, on the northside of Dublin, Ireland. His parents were Abraham Stoker (1799–1876), from Dublin, and Charlotte Mathilda Blake Thornley (1818–1901), who came from Ballyshannon, County Donegal. Stoker was the third of seven children. Abraham and Charlotte were members of the Church of Ireland Parish of Clontarf and attended the parish church with their children, who were baptised there.
Stoker was bed-ridden until he started school at the age of seven, when he made a complete recovery. Of this time, Stoker wrote, "I was naturally thoughtful, and the leisure of long illness gave opportunity for many thoughts which were fruitful according to their kind in later years." He was educated in a private school run by the Rev. William Woods.

Los problemas de salud de su niñez no le impidieron distinguirse como atleta y futbolista en la Universidad de Dublín, donde cursó con excelentes resultados la carrera de Matemáticas y fue presidente de la Sociedad Filosófica.
Entre 1867 y 1877 fue funcionario público en Dublín. En esta misma época, siguiendo la inclinación que sentía hacia el teatro, posiblemente heredada de su padre, escribió crítica dramática para The Evening Mail, sin recibir por ello ninguna compensación económica.
En 1878 conoció a su ídolo, el actor inglés Henry Irving. Nació entre ellos una gran amistad y Stoker se convirtió en representante y secretario del actor. Ocupó en este empleo los veintisiete años siguientes, en los que se encargó de la correspondencia de Irving, le acompañó en sus múltiples giras y estuvo a su lado en el momento de su muerte; junto a él dirigió el Lyceum Theatre de Londres. Sus recuerdos darían lugar al libro Recuerdos personales de Henry Irving (1906).
Bram Stoker escribió numerosas novelas y relatos cortos, entre los que destacan El paso de la serpiente (1890), El misterio del mar (1902), La joya de las siete estrellas (1904) y La dama de la mortaja (1909). También se le debe el entretenido libro Impostores famosos, en el que sostiene, entre otras, la teoría de que la reina Isabel I de Inglaterra era un hombre disfrazado.
Pero su obra más célebre es Drácula (1897), novela en la que construye, a través de diarios y cartas, el retrato de uno de los personajes más famosos del ideario decadentista de la época, el conde vampiro de Transilvania. El relato se basa en diversas leyendas previas, aunque Stoker consigue una unidad de efecto e inquietantes resonancias eróticas y simbólicas, suprimiendo las fronteras sensibles entre vida y muerte a través de un juego de seducción de gran poder y sugerencia.
La novela fue de los bestsellers editoriales a lo largo del siglo XX y una fructífera inspiración para el cine, dando lugar a un auténtico reguero de películas a partir de la obra maestra del cineasta alemán Murnau (1922) y de la protagonizada en 1931 por Bela Lugosi; entre las más recientes, destaca la de Francis Ford Coppola (1992). Entre su restante producción cabe citar Bajo el crepúsculo (1882), El hombro de Shasta (1895), La señorita Betty (1898), El Hombre (1905), La señora Athlyne (1908), La guarida del gusano blanco (1911) y otros títulos como Muerte entre bastidores, El huésped de Drácula, La casa del juez y Drácula: la cúspide del horror.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on Bram Stoker's classic 1897 novel, this film from Francis Ford Coppola and screenwriter James Victor Hart offers a full-blooded portrait of the immortal Transylvanian vampire. The major departure from Stoker is one of motivation as Count Dracula (Gary Oldman) is motivated more by romance than by bloodlust. He punctures the necks as a means of avenging the death of his wife in the 15th century, and when he comes to London, it is specifically to meet heroine Mina Harker (Winona Ryder), the living image of his late wife (Ryder plays a dual role, as do several of her costars). Anthony Hopkins is obsessed vampire hunter Van Helsing, while Keanu Reeves takes on the role of Jonathan Harker, and Tom Waits plays bug-eating Renfield. Bram Stoker's Dracula was the winner of three Academy Awards.
