The Terracotta Army or the "Terracotta Warriors and Horses" is a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. It is a form of funerary art buried with the emperor in 210–209 BCE and whose purpose was to protect the emperor in his afterlife.
The figures, dating from approximately the late third century BCE, were discovered in 1974 by local farmers in Lintong District, Xi'an, Shaanxi province. The figures vary in height according to their roles, with the tallest being the generals. The figures include warriors, chariots and horses. Estimates from 2007 were that the three pits containing the Terracotta Army held more than 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses, the majority of which remained buried in the pits nearby Qin Shi Huang's mausoleum. Other terracotta non-military figures were found in other pits, including officials, acrobats, strongmen and musicians.
History
=====================
According to the writings of historian Sima Qian (145–90 BCE), work on the mausoleum began in 246 BCE soon after Emperor Qin (then aged 13) ascended the throne. The project eventually involved 700,000 workers.[9] Geographer Li Daoyuan, writing six centuries after the First Emperor's death, recorded in Shui Jing Zhu that Mount Li was a favoured location due to its auspicious geology, "famed for its jade mines, its northern side was rich in gold, and its southern side rich in beautiful jade; the First Emperor, covetous of its fine reputation, therefore chose to be buried there". Sima Qian, in his most noted work, Shiji, finished a century after the mausoleum's completion, wrote that the First Emperor was buried with palaces, towers, officials, valuable artifacts and wondrous objects. According to this account, 100 rivers had their flow simulated by mercury, and above them the ceiling was decorated with heavenly bodies below which were the features of the land. Some translations of this passage refer to "models" or "imitations," however those words were not used in the original text, which makes no mention of the terracotta army.
High levels of mercury were found in the soil of the tomb mound, giving credence to Sima Qian's account.
Later historical accounts suggested that the tomb had been looted by Xiang Yu, a contender for the throne after the death of the first emperor, however, there are indications that the tomb may not have been plundered.

Jonathan D. Spence (simplified Chinese: 史景迁; traditional Chinese: 史景遷; pinyin: Shǐ Jǐngqiān; born 11 August 1936) is a British-born historian and public intellectual specialising in Chinese history. He was Sterling Professor of History at Yale University from 1993 to 2008. His most widely read book is The Search for Modern China, a survey of the last several hundred years of Chinese history based on his popular course at Yale. A prolific author, reviewer, and essayist, he has published more than a dozen books on China. He retired from Yale in 2008.
Spence's major interest is modern China, especially the Qing Dynasty, and relations between China and the West.[4] Spence frequently uses biographies to examine cultural and political history. Another common theme is the efforts of both Westerners and Chinese "to change China,"[5] and how such efforts were frustrated.
Spence was educated at Winchester College, an English independent school for boys, and at Clare College at the University of Cambridge. He received his BA in history from Cambridge in 1959. He went to Yale on a Clare-Mellon Fellowship to study the history and culture of China, receiving an MA and then a PhD in 1965, when he won the John Addison Porter Prize. As part of his graduate training, he spent a year in Australia to study under Fang Chao-ying and Tu Lien-che, pre-eminent scholars of the Qing dynasty.
Widely recognised as a leading scholar of Chinese history, Spence was president of the American Historical Association for the 2004–2005 term.[6] While his primary focus has been on Qing dynasty China, he has also written a biography of Mao Zedong and Gate of Heavenly Peace, a study of twentieth-century intellectuals and their relation to revolution. Spence taught a popular undergraduate class at Yale on the history of modern China, which formed the basis for his text The Search for Modern China, whose dedication is "For My Students."
His name in Chinese was chosen to reflect his love of history and admiration for the historian Sima Qian. His name in Chinese is 史景遷/Shǐ Jǐngqiān. He chose the family name 史/Shǐ (literally "history") and personal name 景遷/Jǐngqiān where 景/Jǐng means admire (景仰) and 遷/Qiān was taken from the personal name of Sima Qian (司馬遷).
Spence has received eight honorary degrees in the United States as well as from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and (in 2003) from Oxford University. He was invited to become a visiting professor at Peking University and an honorary professor at Nanjing University. He was named Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George,[6] and, in 2006, he was elected an Honorary Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge.
He received the William C. DeVane Medal of the Yale Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa (1952); a Guggenheim Fellowship (1979); the Los Angeles Times History Prize (1982), and the Vursel Prize of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters (1983). He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1985), named a MacArthur Fellow (1988), appointed to the Council of Scholars of the Library of Congress (1988), elected a member of the American Philosophical Society (1993), and named a corresponding fellow of the British Academy (1997).[6]
In May and June 2008, he gave the 60th anniversary Reith Lectures, which were broadcast on BBC Radio 4.
In 2010, he was appointed to deliver the annual Jefferson Lecture at the Library of Congress, the US federal government's highest honour for achievement in the humanities.
Born in Surrey, England, Spence became an American citizen in 2000.[1] He lives in West Haven with his wife, Annping Chin (a senior lecturer in history at Yale who got her PhD in classical Chinese philosophy at Columbia). He has two sons from a previous marriage (1962–1993) to Helen Alexander, Colin and Ian Spence, and two stepchildren, Yar Woo and Mei Chin.

Building The Great Wall Of China - Great Wall Of China Documentary - Doc Films
The Great Wall of China is a collection of strongholds constructed from stone, brick, jammed planet, wood, as well as various other materials, normally developed along an east-to-west line throughout the historical northern boundaries of China to safeguard the Chinese states and realms against the raids as well as invasions of the numerous nomadic teams of the Eurasian Steppe. Several walls were being built as very early as the 7th century bce; these, later on joined together and made larger as well as stronger, are now collectively described as the Great Wall. Specifically popular is the wall constructed 220-- 206 bce by Qin Shi Huang, the initial Emperor of China. Little of that wall continues to be. Since then, the Great Wall surface has on and off been reconstructed, kept, and also boosted; most of the alreadying existing wall surface is from the Ming Empire.
Other objectives of the Great Wall have included boundary controls, allowing the imposition of obligations on products transported along the Silk Road, regulation or motivation of profession as well as the control of immigration as well as emigration. In addition, the defensive qualities of the Great Wall surface were enhanced by the building of watch towers, army barracks, fort stations, indicating capabilities via the means of smoke or fire, and also the fact that the path of the Great Wall likewise served as a transportation hallway.
The Great Wall stretches from Dandong in the east, to Lop Lake in the west, along an arc that approximately delineates the southerly edge of Inner Mongolia. A thorough historical survey, making use of innovative modern technologies, has actually concluded that the Ming wall surfaces measure 8,850 kilometres (5,500 mi). This is made up of 6,259 kilometres (3,889 mi) sections of true wall surface, 359 kilometres (223 mi) of trenches and 2,232 kilometres (1,387 mi) of natural protective barriers such as hills as well as rivers. One more historical study located that the entire wall surface with all its branches measure out to be 21,196 km (13,171 mi).
The collection of strongholds now known as "The Great Wall of China" has traditionally had a variety of different names in both Chinese and also English.
In Chinese histories, the term "Long Wall(s)" (長城, changcheng) shows up in Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Chronicler, where it referred to both the different wonderful walls developed in between as well as north of the Warring States and also to the more unified building of the First Emperor. The Chinese personality 城 is a phono-semantic compound of the "location" or "planet" radical 土 and 成, whose Old Chinese pronunciation has actually been rebuilded as * deŋ. It originally described the parapet which surrounded typical Chinese cities as well as was used by expansion for these wall surfaces around their respective states; today, nevertheless, it is a lot more frequently simply the Chinese word for "city".
The longer Chinese name "Ten-Thousand-Mile Long Wall" originated from Sima Qian's summary of it in the Records, though he did not name the walls thus. The advertisement 493 Publication of Song prices estimate the outpost general Tan Daoji describing "the lengthy wall of 10,000 miles", closer to the contemporary name, but the name rarely includes in pre-modern times otherwise. The conventional Chinese mile (里, lǐ) was a frequently uneven distance that was intended to show the size of a conventional town and also differed with landscapes however was normally standardized at distances around a third of an English mile. [10] Given that China's metrication in 1930, it has been precisely comparable to (500 metres or 1,600 feet), which would certainly make the wall surface's name explain a range of 5,000 kilometres (3,100 mi). Nonetheless, this use of "ten-thousand" (wàn) is metaphorical in a comparable way to the Greek and English myriad and merely indicates "numerous" or "unfathomable".

In ancient China, early literature was primarily focused on philosophy, historiography, military science, agriculture, and poetry. China, the origin of modern paper making and woodblock printing, produced one of the world's first print cultures.[49] Much of Chinese literature originates with the Hundred Schools of Thought period that occurred during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (769-269 BCE). The most important of these include the Classics of Confucianism, of Daoism, of Mohism, of Legalism, as well as works of military science (e.g. Sun Tzu's The Art of War) and Chinese history (e.g. Sima Qian's Records of the Grand Historian). Ancient Chinese literature had a heavy emphasis on historiography, with often very detailed court records. An exemplary piece of narrative history of ancient China was the Zuo Zhuan, which was compiled no later than 389 BCE, and attributed to the blind 5th century BCE historian Zuo Qiuming.
