Incident at Pristina airport
The Incident at Pristina airport was a confrontation between the NATO forces and Russian forces over the Pristina International Airport on 12 June 1999, in the aftermath of the Kosovo War. Russian troops occupied the airport ahead of a NATO deployment, resulting in a tense stand-off, which was resolved peacefully.
Background
The Kosovo War ended on 11 June 1999, and a joint NATO-Russian peacekeeping force was to be installed in Kosovo. Russia had expected to receive a peacekeeping sector independent of NATO, and were angered when this was refused. There was concern that a separate Russian sector might lead to a partition of Kosovo between a Serb-controlled north and Albanian south.
The Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC) deployed to Skopje in the Republic of Macedonia during early March 1999. The purpose was to provide unified NATO command for several national contingents including a United States battalion which had been in Macedonia for some years, together with newly arrived British, German, French and Italian battalions. The force was known as Kosovo Force (KFOR). The commander of KFOR was British lieutenant general Mike Jackson, with 3-star rank. His superior officer was US Admiral James O. Ellis, NATO commander for southern Europe, based in Naples. Ellis reported to Wesley Clark, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe. In practice Clark often bypassed Ellis to talk directly to Jackson.

Pristina
Pristina, also spelled Prishtina (Albanian: Prishtinë, IPA: [pɾiʃtinə]; Serbian: Приштина / Priština; Turkish: Priştine), is the capital and largest city of Kosovo. It is the administrative center of the homonymous municipality and district.
Preliminary results of the 2011 census put the population of Pristina at 198,000. The city has a majority Albanian population, alongside other smaller communities. It is the administrative, educational, and cultural center of Kosovo. The city is home to the University of Pristina and is served by Pristina International Airport.
Name
The name of the city is derived from a Slavic form *PriÅ¡ÑŒÄ?ÑŒ, a possessive adjective from the personal name *PriÅ¡ÑŒkÑŠ, (preserved in the Kajkavian surname PriÅ¡ek, in the Old Polish personal name Parzyszek, and in the Polish surname Pryszczyk) and the derivational suffix -ina 'belonging to X and his kin'. The name is most likely a patronymic of the personal name *PriÅ¡ÑŒ, preserved as a surname in Sorbian PriÅ¡, and Polish Przybysz - a hypocoristic of the Slavic personal name PribyslavÑŠ. A false etymology connects the name PriÅ¡tina with the Serbian word priÅ¡t (пришт), meaning 'ulcer' or 'tumour', referring to its 'boiling'. However, this explanation cannot be correct, as Slavic place names ending in -ina corresponding either or both to an adjective or the name of an inhabitant lacking this suffix are built from personal names or denote a person and never derive, in these conditions, from common nouns (SNOJ 2007: loc. cit.). The inhabitants of this city call themselves Prishtinali in local Gheg Albanian or PriÅ¡tevci (Приштевци) in the local Serbian dialect.

In ancient history, the VinÄ?a culture lived in the area. The city was part of the Roman Empire between 28 BC and 850 AD. After that, the Byzantine and Bulgarian Empires fought for control, taking Kosovo back and forth, between 850 and 1180. Then it became part of the Kingdom of Serbia. For most of that time, it was the capital of Serbia. When the Serbs lost the Battle of Kosovo, the Ottoman Empire took the city. They brought Islam to Kosovo. While Kosovo was part of the Ottoman Empire, most Albanians became Muslims. Some Slavs did too. In the 1680s, the Austrian Empire conquered Kosovo for a short time, but it was retaken by the Ottomans.
In 1912, Albanian rebels led by Hasan Pristina took the city. A few months later, the Kingdom of Serbia captured Pristina. Then, in the Second Balkan War, the Bulgarian Empire took Pristina from Serbia. Then, in December 1918, French colonial troops took Pristina, and gave it to the Kingdom of Serbia, which was now known as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. In the next years, Serbs would take Turkish land and property by force. Most Turks left, and some Albanians did too.

Probablemente el nombre es un patronÃmico del nombre personal *PriÅ¡ÑŒ, conservado como un apellido en el polaco Przysz y el sorbiano PriÅ¡, un hipocorÃstico del nombre personal eslavo PribyslavÑŠ. Una falsa etimologÃa relaciona el nombre PriÅ¡tina con el serbocroata priÅ¡t (пришт), significando 'úlcera' o 'tumor', refiriéndose a su 'ebullición'.3​ Sin embargo, esta explicación no puede ser correcta, ya que los topónimos eslavos que terminan en —ina corresponden a un adjetivo y/o nombre de un habitante que carece de este sufijo se construyen de nombres personales o denotan a una persona y nunca se derivan, en estas condiciones, de nombres comunes . Los habitantes de esta ciudad se autodenominan Prishtinali, en el dialecto albanés guego o PriÅ¡tevci (Приштевци) en el dialecto local serbio.

Incident at Pristina airport
The Incident at Pristina airport was a confrontation between the NATO forces and Russian forces over the Pristina International Airport on 12 June 1999, in the aftermath of the Kosovo War. Russian troops occupied the airport ahead of a NATO deployment, resulting in a tense stand-off, which was resolved peacefully.
Background
The Kosovo War ended on 11 June 1999, and a joint NATO-Russian peacekeeping force was to be installed in Kosovo. Russia had expected to receive a peacekeeping sector independent of NATO, and were angered when this was refused. There was concern that a separate Russian sector might lead to a partition of Kosovo between a Serb-controlled north and Albanian south.
The Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC) deployed to Skopje in the Republic of Macedonia during early March 1999. The purpose was to provide unified NATO command for several national contingents including a United States battalion which had been in Macedonia for some years, together with newly arrived British, German, French and Italian battalions. The force was known as Kosovo Force (KFOR). The commander of KFOR was British lieutenant general Mike Jackson, with 3-star rank. His superior officer was US Admiral James O. Ellis, NATO commander for southern Europe, based in Naples. Ellis reported to Wesley Clark, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe. In practice Clark often bypassed Ellis to talk directly to Jackson.
