Head to Head - Climate change: Fact or fiction?
Some scientists say the earth's climate changes constantly and naturally, but the vast majority of them believe the current rise in global temperature is man-made, and could be catastrophic for the planet. But is all this but a case of extreme 'climate alarmism'? Climate change sceptic Richard Lindzen is challenged on his view that concern about global warming is alarmist nonsense.

Some extraordinary phenomena have taken place in recent times; Hurricane Katrina, the heat wave of 2003, polar bears swimming in search of ice and vast swarms of insects enveloping an African village. But are these isolated incidents or are they omens of a greater global change?
Sir David discovers that the world is warming at an unprecedented rate, and finds out why this is now far beyond any normal allowance for cyclical fluctuation. But are humans to blame? These changes are already in motion whatever we do now, but Sir David believes that we may be able to act to prevent a catastrophe. People around the world are having to adapt their way of life as the climate changes; the Inuit in the Arctic whose hunting is now limited, the Pacific island inhabitants forced to move as their homes disappear beneath the waves, and the Siberian homes slowly sinking into the permafrost. Sir David investigates some of the possible scenarios for the future, including rising sea-levels, insect plagues and an increase in diseases.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. David Puttnam looks at Climate Change through different lenses, all of which reveal the unsustainable ways in which we are living. Climate Change is real, but throughout history humans have failed to set political and economic concerns aside for our greater good. Will we ignore this latest warning?
Lord David Puttnam produced award-winning films including Chariots of Fire, Bugsy Malone, and The Mission. He now works at the intersection between education, media, and policy. In 2007 he was appointed Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Draft Climate Change Bill.

Can emerging technology defeat global warming? The United States has invested tens of billions of dollars in clean energy projects as our leaders try to save our crumbling economy and our poisoned planet in one bold, green stroke. Are we finally on the brink of a green-energy "power surge," or is it all a case of too little, too late?
From solar panel factories in China to a carbon capture-and-storage facility in the Sahara desert to massive wind and solar installations in the United States, NOVA travels the globe to reveal the surprising technologies that just might turn back the clock on climate change. NOVA will focus on the latest and greatest innovations, including everything from artificial trees to green reboots of familiar technologies like coal and nuclear energy. Can our technology, which helped create this problem, now solve it?

Lord Christopher Monckton believes there is climate change, but he does not believe man has anything to do with it. Lord Monckton says science will ultimately back up that claim. Why the recent push to do something about climate change that is also called global warming? Lord Monckton says, “I think they are panicking because they know that this process . . . cannot be kept going for very much longer because . . . it’s been 25 years since the UN produces a report saying we were all doomed, and since then, the rate of warming has been half of what they predicted and well below their entire range of estimates.” Also, former Vice President Al Gore predicted the polar ice caps would be melted by now. Just the opposite has happened, as Lord Monckton points out, “If you took the Artic and the Antarctic together, global sea ice was the greatest it’s been throughout the 35 years of the satellite era. It is greater than it has ever been before.”
Lord Monckton, former award winning journalist and Margaret Thatcher advisor, also says, “Let’s not forget, it was Hitler who first founded the green movement and first used the environmental movement, not for the basis for genuine concern about the environment, but as a basis for getting control over every detail over people lives so they couldn’t argue back. That’s what this is really all about. . . . I get criticized all the time as to why I don’t just stick to the science. I say somebody has to tell the truth, not only about the science, but also about the politics.”
Join Greg Hunter for an in-depth interview with Lord Christopher Monckton, who calls himself a “seeker after truth” on climate change.

Our planet is vast. It is difficult to comprehend the scale. It is difficult too to comprehend the scale of humanity and the vast changes we've wrought in a lifetime.
Population, production and consumption have grown exponentially. Roads, railways, airlines, shipping routes. The digital revolution. We've created a globally interconnected society. Evidence is mounting we've entered the Anthropocene.
Humanity is altering Earth's life support system. Carbon dioxide emissions are accelerating. Greenhouse gas levels are unprecedented in human history. The climate system is changing rapidly.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assesses the risks and options for societies.
Its latest report states it is extremely likely humans are the dominant cause of warming in the past 60 years.
Without deep emissions cuts, it is likely Earth will cross the target of two degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The target set by international policy. This could happen as early as 2050.
If emissions keep rising at current rates, a four-degree rise by 2100 is as likely as not. This marks a vast transformation of our planet.
It is very likely heatwaves will occur more often and last longer.
The Arctic will warm faster than the global average. It is likely sea ice will all but vanish in summer within decades if high emissions continue. It is very likely sea-level rise will accelerate. Cities and coastal areas are vulnerable.
In general, wet regions are set to get wetter, dry regions drier. Monsoons are likely to become longer, their footprint likely to grow and downpours likely to intensify.
The acidity of the ocean has increased 26% since the start of the industrial revolution.
The full consequences of all these changes on the Earth system are unknown.
Humanity's carbon footprint is huge. Societies will need to adapt to climate change. The scale of change depends on decisions made now.
Can we remain below two degrees? It is possible. But it is up to societies now to decide the future we want. For a likely chance of achieving the two-degree target, societies can emit another 250 billion tonnes of carbon.
We burn about 10 billion tonnes of carbon a year.
At current rates we will use this budget in about 25 years.

China and France agreed Monday that an international deal to tackle climate change to be negotiated in Paris should include checks on compliance, in what visiting French President Francois Hollande called a "historic" step forward.
The Paris conference will be attended by at least 80 world leaders including China's President Xi Jinping and US President Barack Obama.
It seeks to unite all the world's nations in a single agreement on tackling climate change, with the goal of capping warming at two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) over pre-Industrial Revolution levels.
Each signatory's progress should be reviewed every five years, China and France said in a joint statement, to "reinforce mutual confidence and promote efficient implementation". They gave no details.
"The Paris accord must send a clear signal for the world to engage in a transition towards green, low-carbon development that is sustainable and resilient in the face of climate change," it said.
The two also reiterated that the deal should be legally binding -- something which China had already agreed in its submission in June to the conference.
In that document, Beijing also said checks on compliance should be "non-intrusive, non-punitive and respecting national sovereignty".
China is the world's largest polluter and will be a key player at the event, which begins on November 30, in the face of disputes over whether developed or developing countries should bear more of the burden for reducing emissions.
The joint declaration acknowledged the issue, saying that "flexibility should be offered to developing countries who should require it, according to their capacities".
Hollande said the statement was a "major step" towards an agreement in Paris, where China was "necessary, indispensable" for success.
"With this declaration, we have set up conditions which open the way to success and I am minded to believe that an agreement is now possible," he told reporters.
"The conditions were laid in Beijing today, it will be said. This visit is historic. And I am weighing my words."

She says climate finance is likely to the stumbling block and calls on rich counties to make up for their historic emissions by offering free technological transfer to poorer countries to allow them a low carbon path to human development.

Together with quite a number of the world's most respected scientists and economists, we formed the Earth League, to unite our voices in the global dialogue about the greatest challenges facing our societies. The breadth of expertise in this international alliance exemplifies the complexity of the consequences of some of the major forces shaping our future, not least climate change. The quest was to try to track down and network with people whose work is focussed on rapid emission reductions, full transition to renewable energy and transformative social change. Scientists and activists, mobilisers and artists with evidence, messages and commitment geared to avoiding dangerous climate change. Geared in fact to restoring safe climate conditions. The journey took 15 weeks and went through parts of Northern England, Scotland, Denmark, Holland, Germany and through the US from New York and North Carolina, through Colorado to the Pacific North West and California. This is some of that story.

Charting Irreversible Climate Change with Jason-3
As humans drive Earth's climate into a new regime, it is critical to keep our fingers on the pulse of the planet. Sea level rise is both a stark reminder of our impact on the climate and its impact on us. The oceans capture over 90 percent of the heat trapped by greenhouse gases, expanding as they warm. They also collect water from melting glaciers and ice sheets, making sea level rise a doubly im

FEEM Lecture by Peter Wadhams, Professor of Ocean Physics, University of Cambridge: "Arctic Amplification, Climate Change, Global Warming. New Challenges from the Top of the World"
The continuous and progressive transformations related to global warming in the Arctic are posing new challenges which require appropriate reflection as well as innovative and efficient solutions.
The melting of the Arctic ice started over 60 years ago, but its quick acceleration in the last decade brings about a wide range of dramatic consequences at economic, social and environmental level that in turn have geostrategic implications on a world scale.
What a few years ago was considered mainly a local problem is nowadays showing its full potential in transforming consolidated geopolitical relations: the melting of the Arctic ice - which is actually faster than predicted - may lead to conflicts in terms of navigation along new shipping routes, access to local resources and the subsistence of indigenous and local populations.
While looking for scientific and technological solutions, it is now urgent to also identify a new international governance that may support the implementation of an Arctic cooperation management system at a world level.
Peter Wadhams, Professor of Ocean Physics at the University of Cambridge, in the Lecture "Arctic Amplification, Climate Change, Global Warming. New Challenges from the Top of the World" will discuss these topics from a privileged point of view: leader of over 40 polar expeditions from the '70s until today, Professor Wadhams is in fact one of the most renowned international experts in the field. Presenting the results of over 40 years of research to an audience of experts, scholars and researchers, he will provide a unique perspective on the relationship between global warming in the Arctic and geopolitical dynamics, along with new solutions to adequately address the issues at stake.

They also collect water from melting glaciers and ice sheets, making sea level rise a doubly important indicator of global warming. Without adaptation, a 2-meter rise would displace 187 million people worldwide. Sea level will continue to rise, but how fast? Like its predecessors, Jason-3 will serve as our eyes on sea level rise. Measuring global sea level once every 10 days, it will chart out the global rise of the oceans--a rise that is unlikely to subside or reverse for generations. But Jason-3 will be more than a sentinel of climate change. It will also measure the tilt of the ocean surface providing oceanographers with information about ocean currents, measure wind and waves helping forecasters predict marine weather, and even find local warm spots that can intensify hurricanes.
