American Woodcock
The Music of Nature proudly presents "American Woodcock," a video portrait of an American Woodcock giving it's nasal "peent" calls at dusk. Notice the subtle throat sound that immediately precedes each peent. At the end, he takes flight and you can hear the high-pitched twittering of his wings, a sound made by modified wing feathers.

Beautiful woodcock hops to the hospital and home again!
Woodcocks are an unusual patient here at the Wildlife Aid hospital, so our vets Emma and Maru were quite impressed by this lovely bird. It was brought in after flying into a window, but luckily Emma and Maru found nothing wrong with it (apart from a likely headache!). After a few days rest at the hospital to monitor it, Simon was able to release the woodcock in an ideal location, where it seemed more than happy to hop off into its new home!

Woodcocks dancing across the road
I don't know why the Woodcock crossed the road, but they sure do it with panache!
The song "Limbo Rock" immediately popped into my head as I watched these adorable birds dance across the road. This instrumental version was first recorded by The Champs in 1961. When I was a kid, I loved the vocal version recorded in 1962 by Chubby Checker. Enjoy!
Researchers aren’t sure why woodcocks bob this way, but some believe that it may help them hunt by disturbing earthworms.

American Woodcock | Meet the Timberdoodle
If I was to personify the American Woodcock, it would be the person who marches to the beat of their own drum. The kid in high school who always tucked his t-shirts into his jeans, or the black sheep in the family. The one who is comfortable with their nonconformity because, well, it just makes sense to them.
This bird is comfortable in its own feathers, and it should be. In some ways, it was literally built backwards from how most other birds are. But the differences don't stop there. It dances, it struts, it becomes motionless when threatened. Packed within this robin-sized bird is a ton of endearing quirkiness. It's hard not to adore these birds.

Like a pet with a long list of nicknames, this bird has several monikers. It answers to the timberdoodle, the bog sucker, the hokumpoke, the Labrador twister, the mudsnipe and the night partridge.
Scolopax minor is its scientific name, and although it is technically a type of sandpiper and considered a shore bird, it's more likely to be found along the edges of woodlands and marshes than running along a beach.

Have you found an injured or orphaned bird or wildlife?
Do a quick online search for a wildlife rehabilitation clinic in your area. They will tell you what to do. If you can't find one, contact a local veterinarian and see if they know who to contact. Do not attempt to rehabilitate a bird or animal on your own.
