The Bizarre World of Ancient Greece - BBC Documentary
The Greek civilization is considered by historians as the first one in the history of mankind. A study of their archeological remains confirms that the ancient Greeks were a highly developed community. Their lifestyle and inventions indicate a high sense of order and aesthetics.
The ancient Greeks built houses along the shores of the land. They were dependent on the Aegean seas for their food supplies and other trade. Traveling brought them in contact with other cultures. They gained exposure to various agricultural methods and different types of metal work.
Different communities arose from the ancient Greece civilization. Some of them were the Aegean, Achaeans and the Pelasgians. Crete was the center of the Aegean civilization and was the dominant community in 2500 BC. The Achaeans made Mycenae their capital. A volcano caused the destruction of the Aegean community around 1400bc. The Mycenaeans absorbed the culture of the Aegean community.
In course of time, Greek settlements were transformed into city-states or poleis and each city-state was ruled by a king. The government was usually unstable due to the tyranny of the aristocrats. Democracy was hardly ever practiced.
The ancient Greeks were very keen on sports. The great athletic contest called the Olympic games began in 776 BC, which marked the beginning of the rise of the Greek civilization. At that point of time, Greek ideas were greatly influenced by many different foreign cultures. Artists were focusing on recreating human figures of mythology. The civilization saw its zenith around 500 BC. Excellence was seen in the fields of philosophy, art and literature. Wars with other civilizations began in 490 BC and the superior Greek armies overran their opponents to establish their supremacy. The ancient age of Greek civilization saw the birth of great philosophers like Pluto, Socrates, and the great emperor, Alexander.
The ancient Greeks were pagan. They prayed to the various elements of nature. They believed that favorable climate and good crops occurred when the gods were pleased. When things turned bad, they attributed it to the wrath of the gods. They performed sacrifices to appease the enraged gods.
Ancient Greeks were essentially simple-minded folks who left behind a beautiful legacy of art, philosophy and literature.

There are many ancient Greek structures that were built in huge scale and in more grandeur condition, but only the top seven were chosen to be the best of the best, as the wonder of the ancient Greece.
1. Theatre of Epidaurus.
It is a huge theatre which can holds over 15 000 people, designed by Polykleitos the Younger in the 4th century BC. It is used for dramatic performances, ceremonial events, baths and palaestra (wrestling). The original 34 rows of setings were extended in Roman times by another 21 rows. As is usual for Greek theatres (opposed to Roman theatres), the view on a lush landscape behind the stage is an integral part of the theatre. The theatre is marveled for its exceptional acoustic properties too.
2. Statue of Zeus at Olympia.
The statue is made by Phidias at around 432 BC. It was erected in the Temple of Zeus, Olympia, Greece and it was one of the Seven Wonders of Ancient World. The seated statue, which stands at height of around 12 m, was a chryselephantine sculpture made of ivory and gold-plated bronze. The statue occupied half of the width of the aisle of the temple and if the statue is made to be a standing figure, then it would unroof the temple.
3. Temple of Apollo at Delphi.
The temple was erected on the remains of earlier temple in around 7th century BC and it was designed by architects; Trophonios and Agamedes. The temple was a Doric hexastyle structure of 6 by 15 columns. It is destroyed in 373 BC by earthquake and then rebuilt with similar proportion in 330 BC by Spintharos, Xenodoros, and Agathon around the stylobate (stepped platform).
4. Colossus of Rhodes.
It was a statue of the Greek God, Helios erected in the city of Rhodes between 292 and 280 BC. It stands at a height of over 30 m, making it as one of the tallest ancient statues in the world. It is also one of the Seven Wonders of Ancient World. It was constructed to celebrate Rhodes’ victory over the ruler of Cyprus. The statue is believed to be built of iron tie bars with brass plates fixed to form the skin. It is destroyed by 226 BC Rhodes earthquake.
5. Settlement of Santorini.
Santorini is a volcanic island located in the southern Aegean Sea. It is the site of Thera eruption, one of the greatest in history which occured some 3 600 years ago at the height of Minoan civilization. The eruption is also the source of the legend of Atlantis. There was once a town, called as Minoan Pompeii (Ancient Akrotiri) which was once destroyed in 1450 BC from the volcanic eruption. The impressive buildings of the town are the three-storeys houses, some even with balconies and extensively decorated with frescoes.
6. Palace of Knossos.
The great palace was built between 1700 and 1400 BC with periodic rebuildings after destruction. It is the political and ceremonial centre of Minoan civilization and culture on Crete. The palace appeared s a maze of workrooms, living spaces and store rooms close to a central square. The palace sits on 6-acres of land and had over 1 300 rooms as well as a theatre. Part of the palace is built up to five-stories high.
7. Parthenon.
As Colosseum is the icon of Rome, Parthenon is the icon of Greece even till today. It is among the most famous ancient structures on Earth. It is a temple in the Athenian Acropolis, dedicated to Greek Goddess Athena. Construction began in 447 BC and completed in 438 BC. It is the most important surviving building of classical Greece and is the culmination of development of Doric order. The temple had been used as a treasury, church and mosque before. The exceptional architectural features of the temple are the subtle correspondence between the curvature of stylobate, the taper of naos walls and the entasis (visual correction) of the columns. The overall view of the Acropolis, with the landmark, Parthenon standing overwhelmingly above others. This picture best describes ancient Greece.
Out of all these amazing ancient structures, only some survived till these days while others have been totally out of sight due to destructions from natural disasters or from the people itself. Even the survived structures have some portions partially destroyed. Many restoration works are being made to preserve these priceless structures that holds the key of the ancient Greece. As a conclusion, these seven wonders show how such impressive displays of engineering and architecture were managed in a time when technology is still at its infancy.

Greek Mythology is the body of myths and teachings that belong to the ancient Greeks, concerning their gods and heroes, the nature of the world, and the origins and significance of their own cult and ritual practices. It was a part of the religion in ancient Greece and is part of religion in modern Greece and around the world, known as Hellenismos. Modern scholars refer to and study the myths in an attempt to throw light on the religious and political institutions of Ancient Greece and its civilization, and to gain understanding of the nature of myth-making itself.[1]
Greek mythology is explicitly embodied in a large collection of narratives, and implicitly in Greek representational arts, such as vase-paintings and votive gifts. Greek myth attempts to explain the origins of the world, and details the lives and adventures of a wide variety of gods, goddesses, heroes, heroines, and mythological creatures. These accounts initially were disseminated in an oral-poetic tradition; today the Greek myths are known primarily from Greek literature.
The oldest known Greek literary sources, Homer's epic poems Iliad and Odyssey, focus on events surrounding the Trojan War. Two poems by Homer's near contemporary Hesiod, the Theogony and the Works and Days, contain accounts of the genesis of the world, the succession of divine rulers, the succession of human ages, the origin of human woes, and the origin of sacrificial practices. Myths are also preserved in the Homeric Hymns, in fragments of epic poems of the Epic Cycle, in lyric poems, in the works of the tragedians of the fifth century BC, in writings of scholars and poets of the Hellenistic Age, and in texts from the time of the Roman Empire by writers such as Plutarch and Pausanias.
Archaeological findings provide a principal source of detail about Greek mythology, with gods and heroes featured prominently in the decoration of many artifacts. Geometric designs on pottery of the eighth century BC depict scenes from the Trojan cycle as well as the adventures of Heracles. In the succeeding Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic periods, Homeric and various other mythological scenes appear, supplementing the existing literary evidence.[2] Greek mythology has had an extensive influence on the culture, arts, and literature of Western civilization and remains part of Western heritage and language. Poets and artists from ancient times to the present have derived inspiration from Greek mythology and have discovered contemporary significance and relevance in the themes.

REGARDING PRONUNCIATION:
There are a lot of comments upset about how we sang the Greek. First of all, to Modern Greek speakers, we are not making fun of you: Ancient Greek sounds quite different to Modern Greek, and we are using the Erasmian pronunciation, which is internationally considered standard amongst classical academics. Please be mindful of this before criticising us.
That said, this video is just us sharing our translation and having a bit of fun doing our best to sing along. We do not study linguistics or put heavy focus on exactly how the language was spoken in our studies, nor how to replicate an Ancient Greek accent; this is just a general guideline of how to sing our translation to the music. It is not intended as a perfect pronunciation guide, and you are free to sing it however you think it should be sung.
REGARDING ἐλευθερος:
When translating this, I (Robert) thought ἐλευθερος was a two-termination adjective, so would be the same for masculine and feminine in the nominative singular. Upon seeing the comments about this, I asked our Associate Professor of Greek and she agreed that it can be two-termination and that ἐλευθερος is fine. I looked in the LSJ to confirm this and it cited it as two-termination in Euripides and Aeschylus. While one might argue that ἐλευθερα is preferable, I maintain that ἐλευθερος is acceptable.

LESSON ON ANCIENT GREECE
By Mr. Nicky
To the tune of “All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor
Because I taught Alexander the Great, I'm the great Aristotle
Alexander the Great, I'm the great Aristotle
Alexander the Great, I'm the great Aristotle
Alexander the Great, I'm so great (great, great, great, great, great)
If you're a polytheist, you should be thanking Zeus
For all the Greek achievements that they've passed down to you
'Cause you got Democracy from the folks in Athens &
Our alphabet is from the Phoenicians
Minoans and Mycenaeans
worked at their sailing trade
Around an acropolis they'd build a city-state
Wasn't much farming soil, barely enough
On the peninsulas of Attica and Peloponnesus
So in Athens they'd given their citizens voting rights (rule by the people)
But in Sparta they were doing their duty and trained to fight (their duty, duty, for their oligarchy)
Though the Spartans had helots, they were jealous of Athens' power (Athens' jury and assembly)
With their allies they all fought the Peloponnesian War
It was a battle between city-states, city-states
A battle between two city-states, city-states
A battle that ends the Golden Age, Golden Age
A battle where Pericles was slain by a plague (ugh!)
Then Macedonians
Invaded from the north in a phalanx
Phillip II fought on horses' backs
The Greeks got warnings from Demosthenes the Orator but Phillip's cavalries won
His son Alexander spread Greek culture through his empire (mixing the traditions)
With a library in Alexandria on the Nile (they built a Pharos, it's a giant lighthouse)
Hellenism spread eastward till he died in Babylon (His generals split his Empire)
He should have prayed to Athena inside of the Parthenon
It's like a tragedy by Sophocles, Sophocles, Greek Drama
Or by Euripides, Euripides, Greek Drama
Or Aristophanes, Aristophanes, Greek Drama
It's like a tragedy, tragedy
It's like the Iliad and Odyssey, Odyssey by Homer
It's like the Iliad and Odyssey, by Homer
It's like the Iliad and Odyssey by Homer
It's like the Iliad and Odyssey
That's right I taught Alexander the Great, I'm the great Aristotle

I learned from philosophy from Socrates, Socrates, I'm Plato

The Antikythera Mechanism – A Greek Ancient Computer that is part of a number of different mysterious ancient artifacts that cant be properly explained. To celebrate these strange items, we will be looking at some of the more interesting ones, starting with the Antikythera Mechanism.
Script-
Under 45 metres of water, just off the Greek Island of Antikythera is an Ancient Greek shipwreck, discovered within the sunken ship was the Antikuthera Mechanism. A mechanism that is thought to of been used to calculate astronomical positions. However this ancient calculator is very significant due to the fact that it's as complex as an 18th century top-notch clock, yet was built between 150 to 100 BCE. It's an ancient analog computer that consists of a box with dials on the outside and a very complex assembly of about 30 bronze gear wheels mounted inside, nothing similar to this has ever been discovered or is mentioned in any known writings from the period of its creation. The reason that this mechanism is so mysterious is that it can predict astronomical positions and eclipses for calendrical and astrological purposes, as well as the cycles of Olympic Games. It was built with extreme precision and care, and after the knowledge of this technology was lost at some point in Antiquity, technological artifacts approaching its complexity and workmanship did not appear again in Europe until the development of mechanical astronomical clocks in the fourteenth century. Observers of the artifact have said that is is jaw dropping how complex it is considering it is from the Ancient Greek period. Others have said that it is more valuable than the Mona Lisa! So how did these ancient scientists build a mechanism so complex? And why was the technology lost until the 14 century? Let me know what you think in the comments section below and stay tuned for the next video in the unexplained ancient artifact season.

A BeginningIntermediate Grammar of Hellenistic Greek

Traditional Greek grammars are based on the philological method that assumes meaning resides in single words and that learning a language consists of memorizing vocabulary and nominal and verbal paradigms. The linguistic method, developed during the twentieth century, argues that meaning resides in units of speech, like sentenc

A survey of the texts shows that there has been too narrow a view of the "crucifixion" terminology. The various terms do not only refer to "crucify" and "cross." They are used much more diversely. Erik Satie - Gnossienne No. 1 2 3
Erik Satie was very much into breaking down old established rules of traditional Classical music. His Gnossiennes exemplify this strongly. No bar lines in the music, irregular formats and alterations to old scales and inventions of new ones, etc.
The name 'Gnossiennes' can be explained in multiple ways. The ancient Greek word for 'knowledge' is 'gnosis'.

Traditional Greek grammars are based on the philological method that assumes meaning resides in single words and that learning a language consists of memorizing vocabulary and nominal and verbal paradigms. The linguistic method, developed during the twentieth century, argues that meaning resides in units of speech, like sentences, not in single words, and that what is needed to learn a language is familiarity with its basic sentence patterns (its syntax), not memorization of vocabulary lists. Originally published in three volumes in 1973, Robert Funk s classic Beginning-Intermediate Grammar of Hellenistic Greek utilizes the insights of modern linguistics in its presentation of the basic features of ancient Greek grammar. Since modern linguistics aims to be descriptive, rather than prescriptive, Funk s Grammar highlights the breadand-butter features of New Testament Greek, rather than how it deviates from classical Greek. Now redesigned and reformatted for ease of use, this single-volume third edition makes Funk s ground-breaking work available once more.

Gunnar Samuelsson investigates the philological aspects of how ancient Greek, Latin and Hebrew/Aramaic texts depict crucifixions. A survey of the texts shows that there has been too narrow a view of the "crucifixion" terminology. The various terms do not only refer to "crucify" and "cross." They are used much more diversely. Hence, most of the crucifixion accounts that scholars cite in the ancient literature have to be rejected, leaving only a few.

The importance of martyrdom for the spread of Christianity in the first centuries of the Common Era is a question of enduring interest. In this innovative new study, Candida Moss offers a radically new history of martyrdom in the first and second centuries that challenges traditional understandings of the spread of Christianity and rethinks the nature of Christian martyrdom itself. Martyrdom, Moss shows, was not a single idea, theology, or practice: there were diverse perspectives and understandings of what it meant to die for Christ.Beginning with an overview of ancient Greek, Roman, and Jewish ideas about death, Moss demonstrates that there were many cultural contexts within which early Christian views of martyrdom were very much at home. She then shows how distinctive and diverging theologies of martyrdom emerged in different ancient congregations. In the process she reexamines the authenticity of early Christian stories about martyrs and calls into question the dominant scholarly narrative about the spread of martyrdom in the ancient world.

Verbal aspect in Ancient Greek has been a topic of significant debate in recent scholarship. In this book, Constantine R. Campbell investigates the function of verbal aspect within New Testament Greek narrative. He argues that the primary role of verbal aspect in narrative is to delineate and shape the various ‘discourse strands’ of which it is constructed, such as mainline, offline, and direct discourse. Campbell accounts for this function in terms of the semantic value of each tense-form. Consequently, in the search for more effective conclusions and explanations, he challenges and reassesses some of the conclusions reached in previous scholarship. One such reassessment involves a boldly innovative approach to the perfect tense-form.

An improvisation in the intense ancient Greek Dorian Mode, on the awesomely authentically recreated replica ancient Greek Phorminx - an archaic form of Kithara, hand-made in modern Greece by Luthieros:
http://en.luthieros.com/product/phorminx-advanced-lyre-like-7-or-9-strings-top-quality-handcrafted-musical-instrument
The ancient Greek Phorminx was an archaic form of the even more advanced Kithara - like the ancient Greek Kithara, the Phorminx also featured articulated arms - when the player exerted lateral movement to either of the arms of this lyre, a unique vocal vibrato effect was produced. This vibrato mechanism was refined even further on the Kithara, which had a system of springs beneath the yoke for even more vibrato control.
Luthieros meticulously recreated the vibrato mechanisms of both the Phorminx and Kithara - both of which can be ordered from their website:

Now "one of the greatest archeological mysteries of Jerusalem" can be resolved, the Israel Antiquities Authority said on Tuesday (03/11/2015). They claim that the ancient Greek fortress was finally found - buried under a car park.

Greek fort was built by the emperor Antiochus IV Epiphanes (215-164 BC), called Acra, mentioned in at least two ancient texts - Book of Maccabees, which tells the uprising, and notes written by the historian Josephus Flavius.
But archaeologists have puzzled for more than a century to the exact location of this legendary castle. Many think it stands in what is now the Old City of Jerusalem, a site sacred to Jews know as Temple Mount and Muslims who holds two holy places there, Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa mosque.

"It has been an open question in the archeology of Jerusalem," said excavation director Doron Ben-Ami FoxNews.com. "For hundreds of years scholars, archaeologists and historians have been searching for this location Acra and many, many different locations have been proposed."

Naples (/ˈneɪpəlz/ nayp-əlz; Italian: Napoli [ˈnaːpoli] ( listen), Neapolitan: Napule [ˈnɑːpulə]; Latin: Neapolis; Ancient Greek: Νεάπολις, meaning "new city") is the capital of the Italian region Campania and the third-largest municipality in Italy, after Rome and Milan. As of 2014, around 989,845 people live within the city's administrative limits. The Metropolitan City of Naples has a population of 3,128,700. Naples is the 9th-most populous urban area in the European Union with a population of between 3 million[3] and 3.7 million.[4] About 4 million people live in the Naples metropolitan area, one of the largest metropolises on the Mediterranean Sea.[2]
Naples is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Bronze Age Greek settlements were established in the Naples area in the second millennium BC.[5] A larger colony – initially known as Parthenope, Παρθενόπη – developed on the Island of Megaride around the ninth century BC, at the end of the Greek Dark Ages.[6][7][8] The city was refounded as Neápolis in the sixth century BC[9] and became a lynchpin of Magna Graecia, playing a key role in the merging of Greek culture into Roman society and eventually becoming a cultural centre of the Roman Republic.[10] Naples remained influential after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, serving as the capital city of the Kingdom of Naples between 1282 and 1816. Thereafter, in union with Sicily, it became the capital of the Two Sicilies until the unification of Italy in 1861. During the Neapolitan War of 1815, Naples strongly promoted Italian unification.
Naples was the most-bombed Italian city during World War II.[11] Much of the city's 20th-century periphery was constructed under Benito Mussolini's fascist government, and during reconstruction efforts after World War II. In recent decades, Naples has constructed a large business district, the Centro Direzionale, and has developed an advanced transport infrastructure, including an Alta Velocità high-speed rail link to Rome and Salerno, and an expanded subway network, which is planned to eventually cover half of the region. The city has experienced significant economic growth in recent decades, and unemployment levels in the city and surrounding Campania have decreased since 1999.[12] However, Naples still suffers from political and economic corruption,[13] and unemployment levels remain high.[14]

The World Of Ancient Greece : Bizarre Story ( Great Documentary )
Many historians consider that she is the founding culture of Western civilization. Greek civilization was indeed a considerable influence on the Roman Empire. The wealth of Athens attracts talents from all over Greece, and gives birth to a wealthy leisure class. With the Athenian state, it promotes science and arts including architecture.
The Greeks were the first to face the problem of education.how to prepare youth for the future without relying on tradition alone? The conquests of Alexander the Great, then reducing Roman province of Greece allowed to spread the Greek spirit, his rationalism and humanism, but also his taste for the art of persuasion.

Western Civilization has been influenced by many cultures, from Rome to America, but it was born in Ancient Greece. Centuries before Julius Caesar conquered much of the known world, the Ancient Greeks were laying a foundation that has supported 3000 years of European history. Ancient Greece brings to mind philosophers like Aristotle and Socrates, Olympian gods, the beginnings of democracy, astonishing technological innovations, great conquering armies like those of Alexander the Great, and savage internecine battles, none more famous than the duel to the death between Athens and Sparta.
Greece is a story about the human drive to explore, to wonder, to be curious. Their ruins now communicate that drive. Over 1000 years, this strong and charismatic people strategically harnessed the materials and people around them to create the most advanced technological feats the world had ever seen.
From The Tunnel of Samos: a mile-long aqueduct dug through a large mountain of solid limestone, to Agamemnon's Tomb, to The Parthenon, this episode will examine the architecture and infrastructure engineered by the Greek Empire. Engineering an Empire is an excellent series and definitely worth watching.
......................................................................
The legacy of the Greeks is under assault today thus deserves defence and celebration for the simple reason that much of what we are is the result of that brilliant examination of human life first begun by the Greeks; as Jacob Burckhardt says, "We see with the eyes of the Greeks and use their phrases when we speak." We must listen to the Greeks not because they will give us answers, but because they first identified the questions and problems, and they knew too where the answers must come from: the minds of free human beings who have control over their own lives. And this, finally, is the greatest good we have received from the Greeks: the gift of freedom.
The Greeks are accused by some of stealing their achievements from Egyptians and Babylonians, of oppressing their wives and daughters, and of hypocritically speculating about freedom while holding slaves. And that is the greatest irony: the spirit of criticism that among so many academics has fossilized into a pose has its origins nowhere but among the Greeks, who were the first to question critically everything from the gods to political power to their very selves, the first to live what Socrates called “the examined life”.
As Victor Hanson and John Heath write, “Not one of the multicultural classicists really wishes to live under indigenous pre–Colombian ideas of government, Arabic protocols for female behaviour, Chinese canons of medical ethics, Islamic traditions of church and state, African approaches to science, Japanese ideas of race, Indian social castes, or Native American notions of private property.”
Classic Greek culture has come under attack precisely because its achievement, extended into history, is what defines the West and makes it distinct. What is valuable in the much abused Western tradition, hence the examined life, the pursuit of truth, the dialogue about the place of the individual in the larger group, comes from the Greeks. Humanism, reason, the pursuit of knowledge and the arts, moderation and civic responsibility, all come from the Greeks.
The failings of the Greeks, including not living up to their own ideals, are the failings of humanity everywhere. But their ideals, still alive today, led to the recognition of a common humanity that was more important than gender or social status, more profound than local or tribal affiliations. Without this insight, slavery might never have been abolished in the West, women might never have been granted equality, and the liberal notion that all humans possess innate rights merely as a virtue of being human would never have existed.
(Bruce Thornton, “Greek Ways: How the Greeks Created Western Civilization”, 2002, "Defending the Greeks", Private Papers, 2005, Victor Davis Hanson, John Heath, “Who Killed Homer: The Demise of Classical Education and the Recovery of Greek Wisdom, 1998”)

Dr Michael Scott, uncovers the strange, alien world of the ancient Greeks. He asks who were these people who gave us democracy, architecture, philosophy, language, literature and sport? Part 1. We visit ancient cities and battlefields, great ruins and wild countryside, all in his search to uncover how the ancient Greeks thought and lived. What he finds is that ancient Greece was a seething tornado of strange, unsettling and downright outrageous customs and beliefs, inhabited by a people who could be as brutal as they were brilliant. Part 2. We explore the legacies of the Ancient Greeks, what they have given us today, and asks why these legacies have lasted through time. Democracy, art, architecture, philosophy, science, sport, theatre - all can be traced back to ancient Greece. Travelling across the ancient Greek world, from Athens to Olympia, Macedon, Turkey and Sicily, Michael discovers why the ancient Greeks were so successful, why their culture and way of life spread across continents and through time and why they still have such a powerful hold over our imaginations today.

Ancient Greece Documentary: Macedonia-A Civilization Uncovered (BBC Documentary History)
This BBC Documentary History is a full documentary film about the civilization of ancient Macedonia. The Macedonians (Greek: Μακεδόνες, Makedónes) were an ancient tribe that lived on the alluvial plain around the rivers Aliakmon and lower Axios in the northeastern part of the Greek peninsula. Macedonians, who were considered as an ancient Greek tribe, gradually expanded from their homeland along the Aliakmon valley on the northern edge of the Greek world, absorbing or driving out neighboring tribes, primarily Thracian and Illyrian.
This BBC documentary history, one of the best documentary films about the great civilization of the Greek tribe of Macedonians, explores the kingdom of Macedonia as seen from the eys of archaeologist Manolis Andronicos, who discovered the tomb of ruler Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. In this top documentary film we watch Manolis Andronicos extensive work to uncover a Macedonian settlement and we follow his attempts to prove that Greek Macedonian civilization was a sophisticated center of culture rather than an outpost of classical Greece.
This ancient history documentary film covers an unprecedented archeological discovery. In November 8th- 1977, Manolis Andronikos and his team were in front of an ancient discovery that caused worldwide excitement. Archaeologists had discovered a Macedonian tomb in Vergina. The bones of King Philip, the father of King Alexander, were found in a golden larnaca.

The Kingdom of Macedon that was established around the 8th century BC is mostly associated with the Argead dynasty, and the tribe named after it. Traditionally ruled by independent families, the Macedonians seem to have accepted Argead rule by the time of King Alexander I (r. 498–454 BC). Under King Philip II (r. 359–336 BC), they are credited with numerous military innovations, which enlarged their territory and increased their control over other areas, leading to the exploits of Alexander the Great, the establishment of several realms from the Diadochi, and the inauguration of the Hellenistic civilization.

The Antikythera mechanism (/ˌæntɨkɨˈθɪərə/ ANT-i-ki-THEER-ə or /ˌæntɨˈkɪθərə/ ANT-i-KITH-ə-rə) is an ancient analog computer designed to predict astronomical positions and eclipses for calendrical and astrological purposes, as well as the Olympiads, the cycles of the ancient Olympic Games.
Found housed in a 340 mm × 180 mm × 90 mm wooden box, the device is a complex clockwork mechanism composed of at least 30 meshing bronze gears. Its remains were found as 82 separate fragments, of which only seven contain any gears or significant inscriptions.[9][10] The largest gear (clearly visible in Fragment A at right) is approximately 140 mm in diameter and originally had 223 teeth.
The artifact was recovered in 1900–1901 from the Antikythera shipwreck off the Greek island of Antikythera.[ Believed to have been designed and constructed by Greek scientists, the instrument has been dated either between 150 and 100 BCE, or, according to a more recent view, at 205 BCE
