Quotes:
George Sand: I used to think I'd die of suffocation when I was married. Now it's my freedom that's killing me.
George Sand: I am not full of virtues and noble qualities. I love. That is all. But I love strongly, exclusively and steadfastly.
Alfred: Art does *not* apologize!
Marie: She's in love with Chopin.::Franz: The Polish corpse?
Malfie: You promised to love me.::George: I didn't promise to succeed.
Alfred De Musset: [taking a section of manuscript] Her memoirs? Am I in it?::Editor: No! It's, it's about her childhood. I expect you come in later, after she chews up her husband, and about a hundred other fellows.::Alfred De Musset: It's true, she's a cannibal. She would drink the blood of her children from the skull of her lover, and not feel so much as a stomach-ache.::Editor: Alfred, go home - put it into verse - I'll publish it - and then and only then will you get paid.
Marie D'Agoult: George! You'll want to sit over here, my dear - all the respectable people are on the other side.
[Their first meeting, after she sneaks in while he's playing the piano]::George Sand: Oh, don't stop! Monsieur Chopin, you are in the middle of a miracle! - I'm not quite yet cured.::Frederic Chopin: How did you get in here? Who are you?::George Sand: I am your slave, and you have summoned me with your music.::Frederic Chopin: Oh, yes. I think I know who you are: I have heard you described. Madame Sand, rumor has it you are a woman, and so I must ask you to leave my private chambers.::George Sand: Have I offended your modesty? I apologize. Only play me one more piece and I'll go.::Frederic Chopin: No! This is ridiculously improper. And frightening, as well.
[after Chopin's coughing fit]::Eugene Delacroix: He has trouble with his lungs. It's the misery of his life.::Duchess D'Antan: Well, he should be bled. We have an excellent physician. He's developed a very special variety of leeches - quite painless, and they leave very little mark.::Franz Liszt: Better yet, send in George to Monsieur Chopin: she leaves no mark at all.
[Alfred's satirical play begins]::Franz Liszt: Good evening. I am God. In the time that I am relating, I have grown disappointed in my master creation, the human race. I endowed them with everything: the riches of the land, and of the sea, and of the air... and enough intelligence to worship me.

Plot: A send-up of the bawdy life of Romantic composer/piano virtuoso Franz Liszt, with ubiquitous phallic imagery and a good portion of the film devoted to Liszt's "friendship" with fellow composer Richard Wagner. The film begins during the time when Franz would give piano performance to a crowd of shrieking teenage fans while maintaining affairs with his (multiple!) mistresses. He eventually seeks Princess Carolyne of St. Petersburg (at her invitation), elopes, and, after their marriage is forbidden by the Pope, he embraces the monastic life as an abbé.

Quotes:
Cosima: I've polished your sword! What do you want it for, to kill the critics?::Liszt: Time kills critics, my dear.
Liszt: Piss off, Brahms!
Marie d'Agoult: Spare him, Francois! Don't cut off his... genius in it's prime!::Count d'Agoult: Oh, is that what you call it?
Richard Wagner: So you're the jid who only makes music on a cash register?::Felix Mendelsohn: Music, shmusic, it's a living, dear boy.
Liszt: I know it sounds improbable, Your Holiness, but I...::The Pope: But truth is stranger than fiction? We've kept going for two thousand years on that one.
Hans Von Buelow: No, Wagner! Stay in hell where you belong!
Princess Carolyn: You and the Tsar are just different sides of the same coin: false gods worshiped in different ways. Dress the Tsar as a peasant and you have a peasant. [searches for Liszt] Stop skulking behind that screen! [continues] Dress Liszt in a crinoline and what do you have? The same thing: a sham. Rather than walk naked through the world, he chooses to play the imposter. What do you say?::Liszt: Bollocks!::Princess Carolyn: "Bollocks"? I don't speak Hungarian.
Richard Wagner: The trouble with your friends, Liszt, is they're all bourgeois pigs.::Liszt: Oh, pigs if you please. But aristocratic pigs, not bourgeois.
Richard Wagner: Is it true that when Liszt was a kid he played Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata at a concert and the composer himself jumped up and kissed him?::Rossini: Certainly Beethoven kissed the boy. By that time he was as deaf as a post.
Richard Wagner: You are Robert Schumann?::Strauss: No no no. That's Schumann. I am Strauss.::Richard Wagner: Not Johann Strauss?::Strauss: [annoyed] No! Levi Strauss!

Countess Marie: I met Franz at a musical party. I remember he played a ballade in A-flat major by Chopin. I thought I'd never seen anything as beautiful as Franz looked when he sat at the piano. I... I wanted to cry. He watched me as he played; Franz never fails to notice a pretty woman in his audience. Afterward, he followed me into the hall. I remember he said, "May I escort you somewhere, madame?" And I said, "Yes." And he said, "Where?" And I said, "Paradise." He didn't smile - he said, "I'll call a carriage."::Princess Carolyne: Did he?::Countess Marie: What?::Princess Carolyne: Drive you there - to paradise?::Countess Marie: [a pause, and a meaningful look as she turns to leave the room] He doesn't know the road, madame.

Frédéric Chopin-Prelude in E-Minor (op.28 no. 4)
Played by: Aldona Dvarionaite
Fryderyk Chopin (Polish: Fryderyk [Franciszek] Chopin, sometimes Szopen; French: Frédéric [François] Chopin;March 1, 1810 -- October 17, 1849) was a Polish virtuoso pianist and piano composer of the Romantic period. He is widely regarded as the greatest Polish composer, and one of the most influential composers for piano in the 19th century.
Chopin was a genius of universal appeal. His music conquers the most diverse audiences. When the first notes of Chopin sound through the concert hall there is a happy sigh of recognition. All over the world men and women know his music. They love it. They are moved by it. Yet it is not "Romantic music" in the Byronic sense. It does not tell stories or paint pictures. It is expressive and personal, but still a pure art. Even in this abstract atomic age, where emotion is not fashionable, Chopin endures. His music is the universal language of human communication. When I play Chopin I know I speak directly to the hearts of people!
Chopin's music for the piano combined a unique rhythmic sense (particularly his use of rubato), frequent use of chromaticism, and counterpoint. This mixture produces a particularly fragile sound in the melody and the harmony, which are nonetheless underpinned by solid and interesting harmonic techniques. He took the new salon genre of the nocturne, invented by Irish composer John Field, to a deeper level of sophistication. Three of his twenty-one nocturnes were only published after his death in 1849, contrary to his wishes. He also endowed popular dance forms, such as the Polish mazurka and the waltz, Viennese Waltz, with a greater range of melody and expression. Chopin was the first to write ballades and scherzi as individual pieces. Chopin also took the example of Bach's preludes and fugues, transforming the genre in his own preludes.
Chopin was born in the village of Żelazowa Wola, in the Duchy of Warsaw, to a Polish mother and French-expatriate father and came to be regarded as a child-prodigy pianist. In November 1830, at the age of twenty, Chopin went abroad. After the suppression of the Polish 1830--31 Uprising, he became one of the many expatriates of the Polish Great Emigration. In Paris he made a comfortable living as composer and piano teacher, while giving few public performances. A great Polish patriot, in France he used the French version of his given name and, to avoid having to rely on Imperial Russian documents, eventually became a French citizen. After some ill-fated romantic involvements with Polish ladies, from 1837 to 1847 he conducted a turbulent relationship with the French writer George Sand (Aurore Dudevant). Always in frail health, at 39 in Paris he succumbed to pulmonary tuberculosis.
Chopin's extant compositions all include the piano, predominantly alone or as a solo instrument among others. Though his music is technically demanding, its style emphasizes nuance and expressive depth rather than technical virtuosity. Chopin invented new musical forms such as the ballade, and made major innovations to existing forms such as the piano sonata, waltz, nocturne, étude, impromptu, and prelude. His works are mainstays of Romanticism in 19th-century classical music. His mazurkas and polonaises remain the cornerstone of Polish national classical music.

Frédéric François Chopin (22 February or 1 March 1810 – 17 October 1849), born Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin, was a Polish composer and virtuoso pianist of the Romantic era, who wrote primarily for the solo piano. He gained and has maintained renown worldwide as one of the leading musicians of his era, whose "poetic genius was based on a professional technique that was without equal in his generation." Chopin was born in what was then the Duchy of Warsaw, and grew up in Warsaw, which after 1815 became part of Congress Poland. A child prodigy, he completed his musical education and composed many of his works in Warsaw before leaving Poland, aged 20, less than a month before the outbreak of the November 1830 Uprising.
At the age of 21 he settled in Paris. Thereafter, during the last 18 years of his life, he gave only some 30 public performances, preferring the more intimate atmosphere of the salon. He supported himself by selling his compositions and teaching piano, for which he was in high demand. Chopin formed a friendship with Franz Liszt and was admired by many of his musical contemporaries, including Robert Schumann. In 1835 he obtained French citizenship. After a failed engagement to a Polish girl, from 1837 to 1847 he maintained an often troubled relationship with the French writer George Sand. A brief and unhappy visit to Majorca with Sand in 1838–39 was one of his most productive periods of composition. In his last years, he was financially supported by his admirer Jane Stirling, who also arranged for him to visit Scotland in 1848. Through most of his life, Chopin suffered from poor health. He died in Paris in 1849, probably of tuberculosis.
All of Chopin's compositions include the piano. Most are for solo piano, although he also wrote two piano concertos, a few chamber pieces, and some songs to Polish lyrics. His keyboard style is highly individual and often technically demanding; his own performances were noted for their nuance and sensitivity. Chopin invented the concept of instrumental ballade. His major piano works also include sonatas, mazurkas, waltzes, nocturnes, polonaises, études, impromptus, scherzos, and preludes, some published only after his death. Many contain elements of both Polish folk music and of the classical tradition of J. S. Bach, Mozart and Schubert, the music of all of whom he admired. His innovations in style, musical form, and harmony, and his association of music with nationalism, were influential throughout and after the late Romantic period.
Both in his native Poland and beyond, Chopin's music, his status as one of music's earliest superstars, his association (if only indirect) with political insurrection, his love life and his early death have made him, in the public consciousness, a leading symbol of the Romantic era. His works remain popular, and he has been the subject of numerous films and biographies of varying degrees of historical accuracy.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Most of Chopin's compositions were for solo piano, although he did compose two piano concertos (his concertos No. 1 and No. 2 are two of the romantic piano concerto repertoire's most often-performed pieces) as well as some other music for ensembles.
His larger scale works such as sonatas, the four scherzos, the four ballades, the Fantaisie in F minor, Op. 49, and the Barcarole in F-sharp major, Op. 60 have cemented a solid place within the repertoire, as well as shorter works like his polonaises, mazurkas, waltzes, impromptus and nocturnes taking a substantial portion of recorded and performed music.
Two important collections are the Études, Opp. 10 and 25 (which are a staple of that genre for pianists), and the 24 Preludes, Op. 28 (a cycle of short pieces paired in a major key/relative minor key pattern following the circle of fifths in clockwise steps). In addition, he wrote numerous song settings of Polish texts, and chamber pieces including a piano trio and a cello sonata.

Some pieces has been performed by:
Bernd Krueger (www.piano-midi.de)

"Jorge Bolet is an avowed Romantic, happy to relax once the serious business of his recital is over. Like Moiseiwitsch, he can be mischievously enterprising, challenging his audience to guess the composer of this or that rare poetic jewel or confection - or, like Rubinstein, he can affectionately confirm and recreate their favourites.[...] Chopin expressed his infinite variety in a single medium, happy to confine his realm of Waltzes, Nocturnes and Etudes, etc., exclusively to the piano. The E flat Nocturne from opus 9 is a poised and fervent transmutation of Field's frail examples of the genre, and that in F sharp is a notably rich and exotic instance of "Chopin's "Night Music" - music, according to one commentator, inseparable from champagne and truffles. The so-called 'Minute' Waltz is too subtle and engaging to be reduced to a sporting event (note the delicious decoration Bolet provides for the end), whereasthe Waltz in E minor is a reminder of how Chopin's fire could enliven a supposedly restricted salon form. The Études, too, magically transform workaday notions of technique into the highest poetry, and never more so than in the opening examples of Op. 25. No. 11 from the same opus, however, represents a rude awakening from such balm or gentleness, yet, as Jorge Bolet amply shows, Chopin's brilliantfury is not an empty barrage of virtuosity or an elaborate foretaste of Sousa, but a visionary study in melody and counter-melody."
Bryce Morrison
The Quest of final Unpublished Recordings.
"The Second and Third CHOPIN Sonatas, and a DISC OF SEVEN NOCTURNES he had not previously recorded and the Berceuse. These Chopin discs were also made in California in spring 1990 - after he had revived from a coma of several weeks duration. I've not heard the sonatas, but I DID HEAR THE NOCTURNES AND FOUND IT TO BE ONE OF THE MOST MOVING AND DISTURBING PIANO DISCS I'VE EVER HEARD. The Bolet tone was mostly gone - disconcertingly monochromatic - and technique putting one in mind of the concerts and recordings of Horzowski in his 90s. But, as with those Horzowski miracles, the playing contains perhaps Bolet’s most profound spiritual content - it's irresistible to project the impression that it was the last testament of a great artist thinking long about his own imminent passing."

Other Bolet's Performances:
Chopin Nocturne Op.9 Nº2; http://youtu.be/BXvsWStcT3M
Chopin Berceuse: http://youtu.be/H5te43P9pbA

In MY SEARCH ONLY 7 different Chopin's Nocturnes where issued: 6 on Decca/London Records and 1 on Marston Records. So, I'm notably interested in these nocturnes recordings. So, if someone have the final Chopin Sonatas and Seven Nocturnes not previously issued from DECCA/LONDON Records or Know where I can find them, (even if pirate recordings), please write me back or send me one private message in Youtube/about.

00:00 Nocturne for piano in C sharp minor
03:38 Documentary
Wladyslaw Szpilman (5.XII.1911 Sosnowiec, Poland – 6.VII.2000, Warsaw, Poland) plays Chopin: Nocturne C sharp-minor Op. posth. Recorded in Warsaw at home in 1997. Cameraman Jaroslaw Mazur. Szpilman played this music in the last live broadcast for the Polish Radio on 23.IX.1939. An hour later German bombs destroyed its power supply and the Warsaw Radio closed for long 6 years.
This Nocturne was among the last works Chopin composed before departing Poland on November 2, 1830. Like many of his early compositions, it carries no opus number, and would not be published until well after his death - in this case, not until 1870. Its late appearance in print accounts for its high numbering: chronologically, it was not his 20th Nocturne, but only his second, written probably within a year or two of his initial effort, the E minor (ca. 1829). Both these early works already contain the intimate passion and melancholy character of Chopin's later nocturnes, as well as their unique harmonic sense.
The Nocturne in C sharp minor here opens with a brief introduction, a mixture of the stately and the desolate in its hesitant, ponderous character. The melancholy main theme is then presented, a lovely creation in its graceful trills and dark atmosphere. The mood brightens marginally in the secondary material, but still cannot break with the forlorn character established by the opening melody. The main theme returns in the latter half, now more resolute in its sadness, gradually becoming more despondent as the music gently fades away at the end. Lasting about four minutes, this lovely Nocturne is yet another gem among the many in Chopin's considerable keyboard output.
The second of Chopin's nocturnes, this C sharp minor effort bears no opus number and was not published until 1870, more than 20 years after the composer's death. This was one of the last compositions Chopin wrote before departing Poland, which he would never see again, owing to the political turmoil resulting from the 1830 uprising which left him a political exile, forced to spend his remaining years in France.
After a brief, rather sober introduction, Chopin presents a dark theme whose beauty is both subtle and direct, unfolding sadly in its fluttering trills and gray mists. Towards the middle, the music suggests a certain playfulness, hinting even at joy. But the forlorn main theme returns with its gentle gloom to cast a languorous and lasting pall over the musical landscape. Atmospherically, this is one of Chopin's stronger nocturnes, thanks not only to the imaginative thematic wares, but also to the subtle harmonies, which deftly underpin the melody and help to forge the dark colors and captivating mood of the piece.
Szpilman is widely known as the protagonist of the 2002 Roman Polanski film The Pianist, which is based on the book "The Pianist" recounting his survival of the German occupation of Warsaw and the Holocaust.

Nelson Freire (born October 18, 1944) is a Brazilian classical pianist. Freire began playing the piano at age 3. He replayed from memory pieces his older sister, Nelma, had just performed. His teachers in Brazil were Nise Obino and Lucia Branco, former students of a pupil of Liszt. For his first public recital, at the age of four, Freire chose Mozart's Sonata in A major, K. 331.
In 1957, Freire's performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, at the age of 12. He was awarded 7th place at the Rio de Janeiro International Piano Competition. He subsequently received a Brazilian government grant to study in Vienna with Bruno Seidlhofer. By 1964, Freire had won his first prize at the Vianna da Motta International Music Competition in Lisbon, Portugal (ex-aequo with Vladimir Krainev) and he also received the Dinu Lipatti Medal and the Harriet Cohen Medal in London, England. In December 2001, he chaired the jury for the Marguerite Long Competition in Paris. His debut at The Proms was in August 2005.
In general, Freire tends to avoid the limelight, publicity, and interviews. However, in 2011, Freire withdrew from a scheduled engagement with the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira (OSB) and conductor Roberto Minczuk, in support of the orchestra musicians, following the dismissal of about 3 dozen OSB musicians by Minczuk.

Nocturnes, Chopin's Night Music: "Of the tenderness, the charm, the awe and Mystery which are to be found in the Nocturnes...Oh, those Nocturnes! Tones of Infinite Sadness! There is Music in them which fathoms the depths, which plunges us into the immensity; emotional force that rends our hearts; Horrible Despair, bordering on the overwhelming immanence of Death itsel; Divine ecstasy interrupted by a wail of sorrow, and again by a soft caress. And all is so sincere; the sincerity of one whose heart bleeds; whose soul is overflowing with tenderness!
George Mathias, student of Chopin
"Chopin is a Poet. It’s very inner Music and very deep," Pires has said. "Chopin is the deep Poet of Music. But he also invented this terrible thing called piano recitals. That made me suffer all my life."
"The complete set is made of the most concentrated eloquence and pianistic mastery. Passion rather than insouciance is Pires’s keynote. Here is no soft, Moonlit option but an intensity and drama that scorn all complacent salon or drawing-room expectations. How she relishes Chopin’s central storms, creating a vivid and spectacular yet unhistrionic contrast with all surrounding serenity or ‘embalmed darkness’. The con fuoco of Op.15 No.1 erupts in a fine fury and in the first Nocturne, Op.9 No.1, Pires’s sharp observance of Chopin’s appassionato marking comes like a prophecy of the coda’s sudden blaze. Such resolution and psychological awareness make you realize that Chopin, may well have thought that “there must be a bit of fear, and a bit of horror in your life”. Chopin, Pires informs us in no uncertain terms, was no sentimentalist. More intimately, in Op.15 No.3 (where the music’s wavering sense of irresolution led to the sobriquet ‘the Hamlet Nocturne’) Pires makes you hang on to every note in the coda’s curious, echoing chimes, and in the dolcissimo conclusion to No.8 (Op.27 No.2) there is an unforgettable sense of ‘all passion spent’, of gradually ebbing emotion. Not surprisingly, given her general approach, Pires is drawn to No.9 (Op.32 No.1), where an outwardly meek and Field-like demeanour is constantly menaced and thwarted, while in No.13 in C minor, one of Chopin’s most sombre masterpieces, her sense of strength in adversity is overwhelming. Her emotional force in the concluding doppio movimento will surely bring tears to the eyes of even the hardiest, most seasoned listener. And since she is no less successful in the following, wistful F sharp minor Nocturne (always among Chopin’s favourites) and in the rich and fragrant pastures of Op.62 Nos.1 and 2, I can safely say that you will look far and wide for performances of greater poetic command and authority. Pires with her burning clarity has reinforced our sense of Chopin’s stature, created a new range of possibilities, as we all must, I have no hesitation in declaring Maria Joao Pires – a Pianist without a trace of Narcissism – among the most eloquent Master-Musicians of our Time."
Bryce Morrison, Gramophone Magazine
“I can’t think of a pianist with a more ideal command of Chopin’s style. Pires trips through the roulades with filigree dexterity, but her tone is so thoughtful, serious and weighty that they arrive with immense emotional profundity.”
The Times, London, June 2007

Mark Treon and I sat down for a conversation about Romania on 7/8/15, in my studio.
Mark has been coming to Romania since 1991, has made over 30 trips to the country and has also adopted a child here, which has bound him even closer to the country. He is now renovating three Saxon homes in the village of Richis and plans to turn them into an inn.
This is the tenth episode of "Romania Through Their Eyes", a show featuring interviews with foreigners living in Romania. The show's purpose is to get their impressions about the country and to start a dialogue which will lead to a greater understanding of the issues facing Romanians and Romania.
Music: "Ballade no. 4 in F minor, Op. 52" by Frederic Chopin, performed by Frank Levy. Track is public domain, obtained from Musopen.org.

Muzica: "Ballade no. 4 in F minor, Op. 52", compusa de Frederic Chopin, pianist Frank Levy. Fisierul e public domain, descarcat de la Musopen.org.
