Here's a preview:
At least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 per day
To put things into perspective, the top 20% of the world's population accounts for three quarters of the world's income
Half of the world's population accounts for only 5% of the world's income
According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die every day due to poverty
Nearly one third of children in developing countries are estimated to be underweight or stunted
Last year, about 70 million children of primary school age were not in school
Nearly a billion people celebrated the coming of the 21st century without being able to read a book or sign their name
Preventable diseases like Malaria afflict nearly 500 million people every year
Africa alone accounts for roughly 1 million deaths due to Malaria annually. Most of them are children
Speaking of children, there are 2.2 billion children in the world.
Half of them live in extreme poverty
Over 1 billion people have inadequate access to water and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation. Many times this means no separation of drinking water and toilet water.
That is why 1.8 million children die every year of diarrhoea
Approximately half of the world's population now lives in cities and about one third of those in the cities live in slum conditions
In fact, slum growth is outpacing urban growth by a frighteningly large margin
One quarter of humanity lives without electricity
The 7 richest people in the world make more than the poorest 41 countries combined (roughly 567 million people)
.14% of the world population own over 80% of the world's private financial wealth. The vast majority of that wealth has managed to avoid all income and estate taxes, either by the countries where it has been invested or where it comes from.
For every $1 in aid that a developing country receives, over $25 is spent on debt repayment.
The poorer the country, the more likely it is that the debt repayments are being extracted directly from the people who neither contracted the loans nor received any money
In 1998 $8 billion dollars was spent on cosmetics in the United States, $11 billion was spent on ice cream in the European Union, $17 billion was spent on pet food in Europe and the US, $100 billion was spent on alcohol in Europe, $400 billion was spent on narcotics globally, and $780 billion was spent on militaries around the world.
In the same year $6 billion was spent on achieving basic education for all, $9 billion was spent on basic water and sanitation for all, and $13 billion was spent on basic health and nutrition for all
If you are reading this list then you are in the top 30% of the world's population when it comes to poverty and wealth
With new technologies we now grow enough food to feed 10 billion people or 1.5 times the world population. The problem is that most of the world can't afford to buy that food.
If the world spent less than 1% of what it spends on weapons all the previously mentioned issues would be fixed

Today Professors in Poverty premieres at a Congressional briefing calling on politicians, colleges and universities to priorities adjunct professors and the quality of higher education in America now. And thanks to hundreds of small contributions Professors in Poverty is now available online for all to see.
The corporate model of higher education is pushing professors into poverty and this model is a disaster.
More than half of college faculty are adjunct – or part-time - professors.
College tuition is rising at twice the rate of inflation. By hiring more adjuncts and less tenure track professors, colleges and universities are diminishing the quality of education for students and professors.
Adjunct professors have limited access to resources like technology, office space, resources and they receive no benefits.
1 in 4 part-time faculty receive public assistance
31% if part-time faculty live near or below the poverty line
$22,500 is the average salary of adjunct professors
60% of part-time professors have additional jobs
Any professor living in poverty is unacceptable – especially when you consider the rising cost of tuition and the amount of money colleges and universities are taking in.
This is wrong. Sign the petition demanding that colleges and universities prioritize adjunct professors now!
This petition will be delivered to a Congressional briefing in late October on the issue of professors living in poverty. Join the movement in solidarity with adjunct professors everywhere!

For millennia, most human lives have been spent enduring extreme poverty, without enough food, medicine, education, freedom to live a decent life. If you were born on Earth in 1980 you had a 50/50 chance of living in destitution. But here's the amazing news: after decades of unprecedented progress, we can actually eradicate extreme poverty by 2030. USAID's Policy Chief, Alex Thier, explains how it can happen, and how you can help solve humanity's greatest challenge.
Alex Thier leads policy development, strategic planning, learning and evaluation at the U.S. Agency for International Development – the lead development agency for the US government and the world’s largest bi-lateral donor. Prior to that, Alex was responsible for USAID’s multi-billion dollar investment portfolio in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Alex has previously held leadership positions at the U.S. Institute of Peace and the Genocide Prevention Task Force, and directed the Project on Failed States at Stanford’s Center on Democracy, Development, and Rule of Law. He spent years in the field as a humanitarian, community development organizer, and legal advisor for the United Nations, Oxfam, and the International Crisis Group, among others. After the fall of the Taliban, he worked on the process of making a new constitution and reestablishing Afghanistan’s judicial system.

Private probation companies profit by charging excessive fees to low income people who can't pay small fines like traffic tickets. If they can't pay, they go to jail. Many people think that debtor’s prisons disappeared from American society just as surely as horse-based transportation. But in fact, people who are too poor to pay fines are still being threatened with incarceration -- and even imprisoned -- today. Add private, for-profit companies to the mix, and you've got a system that abuses those who can least afford it, with disastrous effects on poor people and communities of color .
Our documentary, To Prison For Poverty, features two parts. Part 1 tells the story of Hali Wood, a seventeen-year-old from Columbiana, Alabama, deeply in debt to a private probation company, JCS. Part 2 tells the story of Kathleen Hucks, a woman suing Sentinel Corrections Services for their abuse of power.
We've long known that mass incarceration disproportionately affects low-income communities and communities of color. In our video about the money bail system, we found that the wealthier a person is when arrested, the easier it will be to pay less in terms of money and freedom. A rich person who can afford to pay bail right away will get to go home, and will receive all of his or her money back upon returning to court. A poorer person accused of the same thing must pay fees to a bail bondsman in order to borrow enough money to make bail, and that fee will never be refunded. That means that a teacher might pay thousands in bail fees, when a movie star charged with the same offense would end up paying nothing.
We see a similar dynamic with for-profit probation companies. If someone gets a traffic ticket and can't pay, the judge puts her on "probation," which really means being ordered to walk down the hall and sign up for a payment plan with a company that has a contract to collect unpaid fines and fees for the court. If the person falls behind on her payments and ever-mounting fees, including those charged by the for-profit probation company itself, company officers pressure her for payments, sometimes with threats of jail and arrest warrants from court. The end result is that poor people scramble to make payments they can't afford. And some even lose their liberty and go to jail.
Like payday lenders, these for-profit companies often seek contracts in cities and counties that are strapped for cash. The companies then offer to collect debts owed to courts with no cost to the government by charging probationers—the very people put on probation simply because they were too poor to pay. Then the companies charge probationers exorbitant fees. Hali Wood was hit with a $41 seat belt ticket. Her payment plan charged a monthly fee of $35.
Probation is supposed to help people return to their community when there is no public safety justification for keeping them behind bars. That goal is sabotaged by companies that are simply collections agencies on steroids.
Judges who run these courts can end this abuse tomorrow, by exerting more oversight of these companies, or by simply ending contracts with these companies where they have the power to do so. As we explore in our documentary, traditional public probation does a fine job of enforcing the law without a profit motive.
In the coming weeks, we'll be screening To Prison for Poverty in the very communities where these companies operate. It's time to let them know we're on to their racket.

740 Park Ave, New York City, is home to some of the wealthiest Americans. Across the Harlem River, 10 minutes to the north, is the other Park Avenue in South Bronx, where more than half the population needs food stamps and children are 20 times more likely to be killed. In the last 30 years, inequality has rocketed in the US -- the American Dream only applies to those with money to lobby politicians for friendly bills on Capitol Hill.

- This film is an exploration of how the drug afflicted homeless population affects society as a whole with exclusive interviews with Chicago's top social and political leaders. Schodorf's relationship with the men allows the viewer to get a true inside look at what life is like as a permanent resident of the streets. Poverty in Chicago, also, investigates the devestating loss of over 150 lives in the winter of 2006 at the hand of a deadly heroin epidemic. "Ive told you. Now, I'm going to show you," says one homeless man who leads the crew through the most crime infested areas of Chicago's south and west sides, inside the drug trade itself.

Social welfare programs like food stamps help to cut poverty. It turns out they are more effective at this than we previously thought. John Iadarola (Think Tank) and Jimmy Dore (The Jimmy Dore Show Podcast), hosts of the The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"A new study suggests that programs like food stamps and housing vouchers cut poverty by almost twice as much as we thought they did.
According to standard census numbers, the poverty rate in New York from 2008 to 2011 was 13.6 percent, before taking these programs into account. The programs the study examines — food stamps (a.k.a. SNAP), welfare (a.k.a. TANF), state-level general assistance programs, and housing aid — dropped that down to 10.8 percent. But the study suggests the real number was even lower: a mere 8.3 percent. If that's true, then the estimated poverty-fighting power of these programs has been dramatically understated for years.”*

"The legendary statistical showman Professor Hans Rosling returns with a feast of facts and figures as he examines the extraordinary target the world commits to this week - to eradicate extreme poverty worldwide. In the week the United Nations presents its new goals for global development, Don't Panic - How to End Poverty in 15 Years looks at the number one goal for the world: eradicating, for the first time in human history, what is called extreme poverty - the condition of almost a billion people, currently measured as those living on less than $1.25 a day.
Rosling uses holographic projection technology to wield his iconic bubble graphs and income mountains to present an upbeat assessment of our ability to achieve that goal by 2030. Eye-opening, funny and data-packed performances make Rosling one of the world's most sought-after and influential speakers. He brings to life the global challenge, interweaving powerful statistics with dramatic human stories from Africa and Asia. In Malawi, the rains have failed as Dunstar and Jenet harvest their maize. How many hunger months will they face when it runs out? In Cambodia, Srey Mao is about to give birth to twins but one is upside-down. She's had to borrow money to pay the medical bills. Might this happy event throw her family back into extreme poverty?
The data show that recent global progress is "the greatest story of our time - possibly the greatest story in all of human history". Hans concludes by showing why eradicating extreme poverty quickly will be easier than slowly.
Don't Panic - How To End Poverty In 15 Years follows Rosling's previous award-winning BBC productions Don't Panic - The Truth About Population and The Joy Of Stats."

In February 2010, Matthew and Andrew Jones founded Poverty Resolutions with the hope of helping those most affected by the devastating earthquake that had struck Port-au-Prince, Haiti. In May, they set out with two of their friends, Chris Matticola and Jon Rose, to live alongside earthquake refugees in Port-au-Prince for 28 days. They committed to spend just $1 per day per person on food, supplies and drinking water in order to better understand the plight of the Haitian people and learn how best to help. Although they came because of the earthquake, they quickly realized that poverty and a lack of jobs, money, and infrastructure were much greater problems. We invite you to share in their story, and learn with us what life is like for the 1.4 billion people living in extreme poverty.
Spread awareness by sharing this video with friends and family on Facebook and Twitter. Share with your school, organization, or church, and contact us if interested in receiving a presentation from Poverty Resolutions.
