Pen

A pen (Latin: penna, feather) is a writing implement used to apply ink to a surface, such as paper, for writing or drawing. Historically, reed pens, quill pens, and dip pens were used, with a nib dipped in ink. Ruling pens allow precise adjustment of line width, and still find a few specialized uses, but technical pens such as the Rapidograph are more commonly used. Modern types also include ballpoint, rollerball, fountain, and felt or ceramic tip pens.

The main modern types of pens can be categorized by the kind of writing tip or point:

A ballpoint pen dispenses ink by rolling a small hard sphere, usually 0.7–1.2 mm and made of brass, steel or tungsten carbide. The ink dries almost immediately on contact with paper. The ballpoint pen is usually reliable and comes in both inexpensive and expensive types. It has replaced the fountain pen as the most common tool for everyday writing.

A fountain pen uses water-based liquid ink delivered through a nib. The ink flows from a reservoir through a "feed" to the nib, then through the nib, due to capillary action and gravity. The nib has no moving parts and delivers ink through a thin slit to the writing surface. A fountain pen reservoir can be refillable or disposable, this disposable type being an ink cartridge. A pen with a refillable reservoir may have a mechanism, such as a piston, to draw ink from a bottle through the nib, or it may require refilling with an eyedropper. Refill reservoirs, also known as cartridge converters, are available for some pens which use disposable cartridges.

Gladius (cephalopod)

The gladius (plural: gladii), or pen, is a hard internal bodypart found in many cephalopods of the superorder Decapodiformes (particularly squids) and in a single extant member of the Octopodiformes, the vampire squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis). It is so named for its superficial resemblance to the Roman short sword of the same name, and is a vestige of the ancestral mollusc shell, which was external. The gladius is located dorsally within the mantle and usually extends for its entire length. Composed primarily of chitin, it lies within the shell sac, which is responsible for its secretion.

Gladii are known from a number of extinct cephalopod groups, including teudopseids (e.g. Actinosepia, Glyphiteuthis, Muensterella, Palaeololigo, Teudopsinia, Teudopsis, and Trachyteuthis), loligosepiids (e.g. Geopeltis, Jeletzkyteuthis, and Loligosepia), and prototeuthids (e.g. Dorateuthis, Paraplesioteuthis, and Plesioteuthis).

Variability

Gladii are shaped in many distinctive ways and vary considerably between species, though are often like a feather or leaf. Some examples are shown below.

Moody (crater)

Moody is an impact crater on Mercury.

Moody features a central peak or peak-ring structure and an annulus of dark material on its outer floor. The area inward of the dark ring appears reddish in enhanced color WAC images, indicating the presence of material different in composition from that of either the dark material or the crater's immediate surroundings. Dark material has been found associated with other craters on Mercury, including Munch and Poe. Moody is somewhat unusual for having its dark ring confined to the crater floor, rather than forming the crater rim as at Munch and Poe.

Moody (Sussex cricketer)

Moody (full name and dates of birth and death unknown) was an English cricketer. Moody's batting and bowling styles are unknown.

Moody made a single first-class appearance for Sussex against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in 1843. Nottinghamshire were dismissed for 326 in their first-innings, with Moody bowling 2 wicketless overs. In response Sussex were dismissed for just 33, with Moody being dismissed for a duck by Sam Redgate. Following-on, Moody came in at number three and was dismissed for 3 runs by William Clarke. Sussex were dismissed for 262 in their second-innings, thanks to 92 from Charles Hammond and 95 from Charles Hawkins. This total was enough for Sussex to draw the match.

Moody (album)

Moody (also released as Moody's Workshop) is an album by saxophonist James Moody composed of sessions from 1954 with a septet arranged by Quincy Jones which were released on the Prestige label.

Reception

The Allmusic site awarded the album 4½ stars stating "In the mid-'50s James Moody led a four-horn septet that played music falling somewhere between bop and rhythm & blues. The danceable rhythms and riffing made its recordings somewhat accessible but the solos of Moody (on tenor and alto) and trumpeter Dave Burns also held listener's interests".
