The job of NHS Scotland is to protect people’s health, whether patient, visitor or staff. To do this we need to make sure our grounds are the healthiest environments they can be. With just over a day to go before polls open for Scottish independence referendum, Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond has dismissed claims that an independent Scotland faces a massive funding gap in the health service. Salmond said the allegations that Edinburgh kept secret a 450 million pound cut to the service are mythical and absolutely untrue. He said the figure, mentioned in the newly revealed Scottish government papers, is related to efficiencies. Salmond stressed that finding cheaper ways to provide service has been part of normal government planning over the past six years. His remarks were in reaction to a BBC report that claimed Salmond had deceived Scottish voters on the future of health service. The report quoted government papers as suggesting Scottish healthcare is not fully funded.

Despite draconian cuts to Scotland's budget by Westminster and relentless negative sniping from Scottish Labour, often backed by wrong figures (e.g. Jim Murphy's recent gaffe), our NHS - Scotland's NHS - is still the best by far in the UK, outperforming England's Tory/LibDem-run NHS and Wales Labour-run NHS.

Andrew Neil on the campaign travel with Yes Scotland in Hamilton, a traditional Labour seat that saw an electoral shock in 1967 when Winnie Hamilton won a by-election for the SNP. The Daily Politics presenter said the working class towns in the west of Scotland were a key battleground in the campaign, where some Labour voters have moved over to the nationalists. He spoke to SNP deputy leader Nicola Sturgeon about the pensions issue, got the views of Hamilton voters and explained how social deprivation was a deciding role for many in Thursday's referendum.

NHS Scotland (Gaelic: SNS Alba or Seirbheis Slàinte na h-Alba) is the publicly funded healthcare system of Scotland. Although they are separate bodies the organisational separation between NHS Scotland and the other three healthcare organisations each commonly called the National Health Service in the United Kingdom tends to be hidden from its users due to the co-ordination and co-operation where "cross-border" or emergency care is involved. In 2006, the NHS in Scotland had around 158,000 staff including more than 47,500 nurses, midwives and health visitors and over 3,800 consultants. In addition, there are also more than 12,000 doctors, family practitioners and allied health professionals, including dentists, opticians and community pharmacists, who operate as independent contractors providing a range of services within the NHS in return for fees and allowances. It had an operating budget of £9.3Bn in 2008/09.
Healthcare policy and funding is the responsibility of the Scottish Government's Health and Wellbeing Directorate. The current Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing is Nicola Sturgeon and the Director-General (DG) for Health and Social care is Derek Feeley. A website has been created to mark 60 years of the NHS in Scotland.
Scotland (Scottish Gaelic: Alba ([ˈalˠ̪apə] listen (help·info))) is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. Occupying the northern third of the island of Great Britain, it shares a border with England to the south and is bounded by the North Sea to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west, and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the southwest. In addition to the mainland, Scotland constitutes over 790 islands including the Northern Isles and the Hebrides.
Edinburgh, the country's capital and second largest city, is one of Europe's largest financial centres. Edinburgh was the hub of the Scottish Enlightenment of the 18th century, which transformed Scotland into one of the commercial, intellectual and industrial powerhouses of Europe. Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, was once one of the world's leading industrial cities and now lies at the centre of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. Scottish waters consist of a large sector of the North Atlantic and the North Sea, containing the largest oil reserves in the European Union. This has given Aberdeen, the third largest city in Scotland, the title of Europe's oil capital.
James Gordon Brown (born 20 February 1951) is a British Labour Party politician who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Labour Party from 2007 until 2010. He previously served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Labour Government from 1997 to 2007, becoming the longest-serving holder of that office in modern history. Brown has been a Member of Parliament (MP) since 1983, for Dunfermline East until 2005, and currently for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath.
Brown became Prime Minister on 27 June 2007, after the resignation of Tony Blair and three days after becoming Leader of the governing Labour Party. His tenure ended on 11 May 2010, when he resigned as Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party. Brown was one of only three people to serve in the Cabinet continuously from Labour's victory in 1997 until its defeat in 2010, the others being Jack Straw and Alistair Darling.
Brown has a PhD in history from the University of Edinburgh and spent his early career working as a lecturer at a further education college and a television journalist. He has been a Member of Parliament since 1983; first for Dunfermline East and since 2005 for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath. As Prime Minister, he also held the offices of First Lord of the Treasury and the Minister for the Civil Service.
