In 1978, in the remote Russian Republic of Khakassia, Siberia, a group of geologists discovered a family of Old Believers, the Lykovs. They had fled to the wilderness to avoid religious persecution first from the Orthodox Church and then from the Soviets. Now RTD’s film crew goes deep into the taiga to meet the only remaining member of the family, Agafia. She is almost 70 years old and is in desp

Hey everyone!
Today we’ll go to the Maritime museum.
It’s situated in my hometown, in the town Arkhangelsk.
When I go to a museum, I don’t need guides, because my parents are very smart.
They know so much.
Today you’ll meet my Dad and my Mom.
In our town Arkhangelsk we’ve got a very interesting maritime museum.
All the ships are made on a ‘fish skeleton’ basis. Don’t you notice?
No.
I remember I was talking to my granddad about the fact, that ship ribs remind fish bones.
It’s the ship for parades.
And what’s there inside?
There inside?
Well, that is a steering wheel.

And what kind of barrel is there? Over there, inside.
There, a barrel, what kind of barrel is that?
A barrel? It’s drinking water.
Well, sometimes (they) brought rum from Norway.
And there is the ‘White Tower’, yes?

Which year?
In 1837. (The first) lighting (of the lamp) was on September 7.
(They) tried to destroy it a few times – during Intervention (1918-20), and during the Great Patriotic War (1941-45).
It’s still working.
In the Maritime museum I discovered 2 interesting exhibits – 2 stones.
Our great, famous artist and fairytale teller Stepan Grigorievich Pisakhov painted (on) them.
Here, on the first stone in 1928, he painted an icebreaker (with steam engines) ‘Georgy Sedov’.
It must be said, that Stepan Pisakhov often went on the sea-voyages.
That’s why these pieces were made (painted) ‘from nature’.
And it’s very interesting, that he uses ‘live’ natural material – stones.

She is almost 70 years old and is in desperate need of a helper. The filmmakers encourage her to write a letter to Old Believers everywhere in an attempt to find one. This letter, written in Old Slavonic language, is available on RTD’s site: http://rtd.rt.com/info/agafias-letter/
The film crew also interviews Erofey Sedov, a former drilling geologist. He was one of those who discovered the Lykovs and told the world about them. He got to know them well and is now ready to share information that will make us see the familiar story of this family of hermits in a different light. But is any of it true?

"We are going to go down there. We are going down to a position 63 south five degree east which will take us about seven days from Cape Town. Once we get down there we will start breaking through the ice, that's the ice edge. We will start breaking through. It's about 510 miles of ice from there to the ship, the Magdalena Oldendorff and we will get as far as we can. We we can't go any further we will wait for an Argentinian ship. There is an ice breaker from Argentina coming down. We will wait for them and then they will break the ice. Hopefully we will be able to reach the Magdalena Oldendorff and bring her out."

STORYLINE:
A South African ship, carrying helicopters and rescue crews, left Sunday for Antarctica where it will try to help rescue 107 people on a ship trapped by ice.
After a nine-day journey, the South African ship, the Agulhas, is to meet up with an Argentinian icebreaker, Almirante Irizar, at the edge of the ice where they will try to free the trapped vessel.
The Magdalena Oldendorff, the trapped German ship, was carrying 79 Russian scientists and 28 crew members, two of them German, to Cape Town from the Novolazarevskaya station in northeast Antarctica when it came across an ice drift blocking its path last week.
If the ship can't be brought back to Cape Town the scientists and nonessential crew members will be evacuated to leave behind a skeleton staff on board the ship with enough supplies and fuel to last through the rest of the winter. Morale among the trapped crew and scientists is reported to be good.
It will take the 'S.A. Agulhas' seven days to travel the 1840 nautical miles from Cape Town to the ice edge. It is approximately another 510 nautical miles from the ice edge to the 'Magdalena Oldendorff' at her current position.
Agulhas is an ice strengthened research vessel is carrying 37 crew members, 12 helicopter personnel, ice navigator Andrei Masanov and a doctor. The vessel boasts excellent helicopter facilities with a dual hanger and large helideck. Two Oryx helicopters will be used for an ice reconnaissance mission.
At present, the Antarctic has only 4 hours of daylight in a 24 hour period, with this reducing as mid-winter approaches.
