Scotts Abandoned Hut - Antarctica.
Scott's Hut is a building located on the north shore of Cape Evans on Ross Island in Antarctica. It was erected in 1911 by the British Antarctic Expedition of 1910–1913 (also known as the Terra Nova Expedition) led by Robert Falcon Scott. In selecting a base of operations for the 1910–1913 Expedition, Scott rejected the notion of re-occupying the hut he had built by McMurdo Sound during the Discovery Expedition of 1901–1904. This first hut was located at Hut Point, 20 km south of Cape Evans. Two factors influenced this decision. One was that the hut was extremely cold for living quarters and the other was that Scott's ship, the Discovery, had been trapped by sea ice at Hut Point, a problem he hoped to avoid by establishing his new base farther north.
Some confusion arises because Discovery Hut can technically be referred to as 'Scott's' Hut, in that his expedition built it, and it was his base ashore during the 1901–1904 expedition, but the title 'Scott's Hut' popularly belongs to the building erected in 1911 at Cape Evans.
Scott's Hut was prefabricated in England before being brought south by ship. It is rectangular, 50 feet (15 m) long and 25 feet (7.6 m) wide. Insulation was provided by seaweed sewn into a quilt, placed between double-planked inner and outer walls. The roof was a sandwich of three layers of plank and two layers of rubber ply enclosing more quilted seaweed. Lighting was provided by acetylene gas, and heating came from the kitchen and a supplementary stove using coal as fuel. Apsley Cherry-Garrard wrote that the hut was divided into separate areas for sleeping and working by a bulkhead made of boxes of stores. A stable building (for nineteen Siberian ponies), approximately 50 by 16 feet (15.2 by 4.9 m), was subsequently attached to the north wall of the main building. A utility room, approximately 40 by 12 feet (12.2 by 3.7 m), was also added later, built around the original small porch at the South West end of the main building. Considerable effort was made to insulate the building, and to extract the maximum amount of heat from the flues from the stove and the heater, based on lessons learnt from the Discovery Hut. Terra Nova expeditioners described the hut as being warm to the point of being uncomfortable.
A cross is erected on a hill behind Scott's Hut at Cape Evans, but this is not connected to Captain Scott, having been erected in memory of the three members of Shackleton's Ross Sea Party, who died nearby. The cross erected in memory of Captain Scott and his polar companions is to be found atop Observation Hill.
Both Scott's Hut and Shackleton's Hut have been included on the World Monuments Watch List of 100 Most Endangered Sites.
After 1917, the hut remained untouched until 1956, when US expeditioners dug it out of the snow and ice. It was found to be in a remarkable state of preservation, and included many artifacts from both the earlier expeditions. While some artifacts were taken as souvenirs at the time (and since), this hut has remained largely as it was in 1917.
New Zealand and the UK have undertaken responsibility at various times since the 1970s to restore (largely by removing snow and ice) both Scott's hut and Discovery Hut.
While the preservation of food in the freezing temperatures and dry climate has been noted, bacterial decay still occurs. Visitors describe the seal meat preserved at the Discovery Hut as smelling 'quite rancid', and some have expressed concerns that the fabric of these huts are being affected by fungal decay
The hut has been designated an Antarctic Historic Site or Monument (HSM 16), following a proposal by New Zealand and the United Kingdom to the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting.

This fascinating film was made by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Atomic Energy Commission and the U.S. Navy in 1962. In that year the U.S. Navy delivered a nuclear reactor to Antarctica to power the McMurdo Station. The plant, like the nearby Scott's Discovery Hut, was prefabricated in modules. Engineers designed the components to weigh no more than 30,000 pounds (13,608 kg) each and to measure no more than 8 ft 8 inches by 8 ft 8 inches by thirty feet. A single core no larger than an oil drum served as the heart of the nuclear reactor. These size and weight restrictions were intended to allow the reactor to be delivered in an LC-130 Hercules aircraft. However, the components were actually delivered by ship.
The reactor generated 1.8 MW of electrical power and reportedly replaced the need for 1,500 US gallons (5,700 L) of oil daily. Engineers applied the reactor's power, for instance, in producing steam for the salt water distillation plant. The reactor, designated PM-3A, was designed and built by the Martin Company. There were problems with the plant from the beginning. It underperformed to expectations and frequently fell victim to power failures. It also raised concerns in New Zealand, where U.S. Navy ships transporting the fuel and waste under Operation Deep Freeze would dock for a few days while in transit.
As a result of the multiple malfunctions of the PM-3A as well as it's clean up activities, there have been concerns that the health of personnel involved with the reactor may have been adversely affected. Although members of the Navy Nuclear Propulsion Unit were continuously monitored for radiation, many of the military support crew were not. As such, a study was undertaken by the Department of Defense to estimate an upper bound on radiation exposure for these individuals based on the worst cases of the available data from McMurdo. Levels of radioactivity in the water were monitored once the PM-3A was used in the production of drinking water. During the first few years of fresh water production (between 1967 and 1969) there were several instances of abnormally high amounts of tritium in the drinking water. In addition, there was a case of abnormally high amounts of long-lived beta activity in the drinking water in 1969.
In addition to problems with the drinking water and environmental contamination, there were several recorded instances of crew radiation exposure, some resulting in injury. During the plant operation, 223 reports of abnormal levels of radiation were recorded. Of these cases, 14 resulted in injury and 123 resulted in exposure in the amount of 0.350 rem over a period of 7 days. This is a substantial amount of radiation when it is estimated that, one average, a typical yearly dose from background sources is 0.240 rem. The remaining 86 instances were abnormal radiation levels detected within the plant and its immediate surroundings.
All of these factors led to PM-3A existing on very shaky ground almost from the day it began operating. The coup de grace, however, came in 1972 when a leak in the reactor's pressure vessel was discovered during a routine inspection. A closer look uncovered cracks throughout the reactor, caused by failures in some of the welds, and the decision was made to close and dismantle PM-3A. Disposal presented other headaches. Decommissioned nuclear plants are usually entombed in concrete, but provisions in the Antarctic Treaty made this impossible, so the dismantled plant, along with some of the contaminated ground surrounding it, was shipped to a disposal site in California.
The nuclear reactor installed at McMurdo Station was the first and only to operate on the Antarctic continent. It operated for 10 years and greatly reduced the need for fossil fuels in the Antarctic. Although it was initially thought to be a cost saving device, its unreliability, large operational crew, and large clean up proved it to be an expensive experiment. As a memorial, a plaque now stands at the site of the nuclear power station in McMurdo commemorating the people and services of the PM-3A.

Our adventure begins in dense rainforests outside Cairns in the north of Queensland, one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations. We are part of an expedition that will travel far from the tourist trail and into vast unspoiled regions in order to search for an extraordinary aborigine, the Walangee! A newly-ignited forest fire forces us to change direction and take an alternative route. On this occasion it is no problem otherwise our entire expedition could be in jeopardy. Our new route travels along a gravel-covered forest road: a four wheel drive vehicle in this part of Queensland is an absolute necessity.Three rivers, the Lockhart, Pascoe and Jardine, as well as numerous small tributaries, flow across the pathless jungle area of the north coast of Australia. The river is a habitat for a large variety of very unusual creatures. We feel a little like how the first European discoverers of Australia must have felt. Cape York Peninsula was one of the first regions to be discovered by the first seafarers here long before Captain James Cook discovered the fifth continent. Within his hut Chief Walangee is busy with the creation of a new harpoon. For the inhabitants of Cape York Peninsula, for thousands of years the harpoon has been the most important hunting device. Today the point of the harpoon is made of iron. Chief Walangee is one of the last authentic hunters of this region. We also visit one of the most famous diving sites in the world, the Great Barrier Reef, that consists of around a thousand islands and almost three thousand individual reefs. This journey into Australia’s natural past has confirmed that it is one of the world’s most untouched land masses in which ancient traditions continue to be used for practical purposes, not just a tourist’s carefully posed photo opportunity!

Top 13 Destinations in Antarctica according to Lonely Planet
13. McMurdo Station
McMurdo Station is a U.S. Antarctic research center located on the southern tip of Ross Island. The station is the largest community in Antarctica, capable of supporting up to 1,258 residents, and serves as the United States Antarctic science facility. All personnel and cargo going to or coming from Amundsen--Scott South Pole Station first pass through McMurdo.
12. Cape Denison
Cape Denison is a rocky point at the head of Commonwealth Bay in Antarctica. It was discovered in 1912 by the Australasian Antarctic Expedition under Douglas Mawson, who named it for Sir Hugh Denison of Sydney, a patron of the expedition. The cape was the site of the expedition's main base. Called by Mawson "the windiest place on Earth", the site experiences fierce katabatic winds.
11. Whale Encounters
One of the major pay-offs of the long passage across the Southern Ocean is the chance to spot migrating whales circulating through krill-rich waters. Once nearer to land, if you're in a Zodiac, calling it whale-watching doesn't do it justice: you could be close enough to get a 'whale bath'.
10. Charlotte Bay & Cuverville Island
Charlotte Bay is a bay on the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula indenting the west coast of Graham Land in a southeast direction for 12 nautical miles, between Reclus Peninsula and Cape Murray. Its head is fed by Renard Glacier, Krebs Glacier and Bozhinov Glacier.
9. Antarctic Museum at Port Lockroy
Port Lockroy is a natural harbour on the north-western shore of Wiencke Island in Palmer Archipelago of the British Antarctic Territory. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations for cruise-ship passengers in Antarctica. Proceeds from the small souvenir shop fund the upkeep of the site and other historic sites and monuments in Antarctica.
8. Deception Island
Deception Island has one of the safest harbours in Antarctica. The island is the caldera of an active volcano, which caused serious damage to the local scientific stations in 1967 and 1969. The island previously held a whaling station; it is now a tourist destination and scientific outpost.
7. Grytviken, South Georgia
Grytviken is a settlement in the British territory of South Georgia in the South Atlantic. It is the best harbour on the island, consisting of a bay within a bay. The site is quite sheltered, provides a substantial area of flat land suitable for building, and has a good supply of fresh water.
6. Paradise Harbor
Paradise Harbor is a wide embayment behind Lemaire and Bryde Islands in Antarctica, indenting the west coast of Graham Land between Duthiers and Leniz Points. The name was first applied by whalers operating in the vicinity and was in use by 1920. It is one of only two harbors used for cruise ships to stop on the continent.
5. Shackleton's Hut
When Shackleton went into McMurdo Sound in 1908, having failed to land on King Edward VII Land, he decided to build a hut at Cape Royds, a small promontory twenty-three miles north of Hut Point where Scott had stayed during the Discovery Expedition. The whole shore party lived in this hut through the winter of 1908.
4. Cape Evans
Cape Evans is a rocky cape on the west side of Ross Island, forming the north side of the entrance to Erebus Bay. Scott's Hut hut has been designated a Historic Site or Monument, following a proposal by New Zealand and the United Kingdom to the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting.
3. Cruising the Lemaire Channel
Lemaire Channel is a strait off Antarctica, between Kiev Peninsula in the mainland's Graham Land and Booth Island. Nicknamed "Kodak Gap" by some, it is one of the top tourist destinations in Antarctica; steep cliffs hem in the iceberg-filled passage, which is 11 km long and just 1,600 metres wide at its narrowest point.
2. Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station
The Amundsen--Scott South Pole Station is a US scientific research station at the Geographic South Pole, the southernmost place on the Earth. The station is located on the high plateau of Antarctica at an elevation of 2,835 metres above sea level.
1. Meeting the Penguins
When you first lay eyes on these ever-anthropomorphized birds, you'll know you've arrived in the Antarctic. From the tiny tuxedo-clad Adélie and the bushy-browed macaroni, to the world's largest penguin, the fabulously debonair emperor, the Antarctic offers a chance to see these unique creatures on their own turf: sea, ice and shore.

In this short film, Jonny explains about setting up and running, Wild Frontiers, the multi-award winning adventure travel company...
In the Beginning…
In 1996, after the relative success of my first travel book, Running with the Moon – a journey that saw me drive a motorbike right the way around the African Continent – I decided to follow in the footsteps of my two heroes form English literature, Peachy Carnehan and Daniel Dravot, from Rudyard Kipling’s short story, the Man Who Would be King. Growing a beard and donning local garb, I travelled, largely on foot, from Marwar Junction in India, through Pakistan, across the Khyber Pass and into war-torn Afghanistan. Here I trekked through the Hindu Kush and the Afghan province of Nuristan before finally emerging here into the valleys of the Kalash.
If you look up there, right onto the horizon, you can see the point, 4,650 meters above sea level, and a long way above the valley floor, at which I crossed the border leaving the fear of war behind me and from where I walked down into these peaceful valleys.
After 6 weeks wandering through Afghanistan bearded, bedraggled and a good deal thinner, I was looking for a man called Saifullah Jan who I had been told spoke good English. As one of the few truly educated men of the Kalash, I had been told Saifullah was the chief spokesperson for this minority pagan tribe and that he’d be able to help me find a place to stay and learn more about their culture.
Jonny: Do you remember that day Saifullah, when I first came into your house?
Saifullah: ‘Yes I remember very well – we all thought you were Taliban!’
Jonny: ‘Ha, yes well my beard was impressive! Your children were so young, Gulistan, 7, Yassir 14… now look at them!’
Saifullah: ‘Yes, blah, blah, blah…’
Jonny: ‘Do you also remember suggesting I set up a travel company, to bring travellers to your village and teach them about the culture of the Kalash?’
Saifullah: ‘Yes I do…’
So overwhelmed was I by the friendship and hospitality I received, and the genuinely fascinating and peaceful world into which I’d stumbled, that I put down my bags and stayed for three month. From here I headed back to India where I rented a hut on a Goan beach and wrote my second book, For A Pagan Song, about this journey and my time spent with the Kalash.
But Saifullah’s words were never far from my mind and so in 1997 I returned to the Kalash Valleys and with Saifullah’s help set up my first itinerary, our Hindu Kush Adventure. A year later I brought our first group and so Wild Frontiers, named after the Northwest Frontier, was born.
All change…
Of course the path since then has not always been easy. A couple of years after that first trip the cataclysmic events in New York changed the world forever.
I was actually here in the Kalash Valleys with a group when 9/11 happened, and as cut off as we were we didn’t hear about it for another 3 days, surely among the last people on the planet to know.
And 9/11 also changed the path of Wild Frontiers. Unable as I was to run trips to Pakistan, I was forced to re-examine my options and in 2002 we inaugurated the company properly and started to branch out into other destinations; starting with Kyrgyzstan, a land through which I had just travelled on horseback while researching a third book and making a Discovery Channel film.
Wild Frontiers Today
Whilst maintaining the same sympathetic approach to the people we visit and the regions through which we travel, today Wild Frontiers now takes travellers to more than 60 countries on six continents. Using passionate and knowledgeable guides, we are able to provide unique and original itineraries that allow our clients to take a journey beneath the surface of the region and into those special and secret places we all as travellers love to discover.
When I set up Wild Frontiers my mission was simple, to provide the platform that would allow others to experience the same amazing world I’d be privileged enough to explore as a travel writer.
To give our clients the kind of personal service we know they like, we operate from an office in West London, where we have a dedicated team – all with a wealth of knowledge about our destinations – on hand to answer their questions.
All this hard work has been acknowledged with a number of wards, including in 2012 the very prestigious Guardian/Observer Best Ethical Travel Company Award.
